THE FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE: Manny Is Loose, Cotto Has Game Face On

By Ronan Keenan

LAS VEGAS -- The deference between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto was upheld at Thursday’s final pre-fight press conference, the last chance for promoters to crank up the publicity machine ahead of this weekend’s showdown at the MGM Grand.

The tone was relaxed, with promoter Bob Arum exclaiming that both fighters have been among the most cooperative and agreeable he has ever worked with. But even-tempered, respectful characters don’t necessary engender sizable pay-per-view sales.

Mark Taffet, Senior Vice President of HBO Sports Pay Per View, took the dais and stated that Saturday’s fight will emulate Floyd Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez and become the second event this year to garner over one million sales – a feat that has not been achieved since 1999 [when Holyfield-Lewis and De La Hoya-Trinidad set the record]. If Cotto-Pacquiao is to attain such a buy-rate it will be attributable to interest in a compelling prizefight rather than curiosity in dramatic subplots.

Cotto came to the press conference decked out in shades, a black tie and grey suit, while Pacquiao, possibly signaling a growing comfort with press events, shunned formal attire in favor of a casual shirt and jeans combination. The 30-year-old Filipino also seemed at ease as he spoke coherently in English, while smiling throughout his time on the platform.

“This fight is the most important fight in my boxing career. If I win this fight, it’s history for boxing and the Philippines, and it’s a great honor for my country,” said Pacquiao through a gleaming grin. “I want to give the people enjoyment on that night. I respect Miguel Cotto's team. They are nice guys. They are friendly.”

And while Puerto Rico’s Cotto also demonstrated lucid English in speaking highly of his opponent, he seemed a little less chirpy than Pacquiao, perhaps weighed down by the effort of squeezing down to the contractually agreed limit of 145 pounds. Cotto, 29, did look a little gaunt, but no more so than before his recent fights.

“I have trained very hard and I know the skills of Manny, but I have a gameplan,” said Cotto.

Whilst the event’s sponsors were orating on stage, Cotto’s eyes continually scanned the audience, shifting from one side of the auditorium to the other. Conversely, Pacquiao scribbled incessantly on a piece of paper, seemingly locked away in his own world, far away from the gaze of the sizable press contingent.

When it came for the fighters to pose for the traditional face-off, Cotto suddenly adopted a stony glare, with furrowed eyebrows and deadpan eyes. Yet Pacquiao had little interest in a staring contest, breaking away from eye contact in fits of laughter after just a few seconds. Cotto tried to continue the face-off, but soon gave up and broke into a smile.
                                                                  -----

Saturday’s fight may have a modest hype factor, but that hasn’t suppressed mainstream interest in Manny Pacquiao. The Wall Street Journal and New York Times are reportedly covering the fight, while Time magazine recently dedicated a five-page feature to the fighter.

However, the recent upsurge in the sport’s crossover appeal may have gone to Arum’s head on Thursday, with the promoter claiming that articles relating to Cotto-Pacquiao are the most read stories on newspapers’ websites.

“[Writers] tell me that when there’s an article that they write on this fight … it’s the number one article on the site. That’s proof in the interest in this fight and proof in the interest in boxing,” declared Arum. “Sponsors and advertisers are going to come flocking back to this sport.”

Despite such apparent signs of strength in the promotion, Arum wouldn’t make a prediction on the pay-per-view sales for the fight. “I don’t have to go into numbers,” he said.
                                                                 -----
There was plenty of hallow trinket-trumpeting on Thursday, with news that the fight’s winner will receive the World Boxing Organization’s Super Champ welterweight belt, even though the contest is being fought two pounds south of the welterweight limit. In addition, Mauricio Sulaiman of the World Boxing Council took to the stage to announce that the winner will also be presented with the organization’s first ever diamond belt.

“There are 600 diamonds on the belt,” said Sulaiman of the award that is reportedly worth $50,000. “It is not a new championship, it is just a trophy.”

But if the fight’s winner will not garner the WBC’s proper championship, why was the organization given such a prominent role at the press conference? Evidently, promoters still believe that shiny baubles can help sell a fight, and the WBC’s willingness to invent a diamond-encrusted trophy helped patch up the historically stormy relationship between the alphabet group and Bob Arum.

“[The WBC] will also present a special diamond medal to Mr Arum,” added Sulaiman. “I’m very proud to be here.”

Last year, Arum refused to even credential the organization’s president Jose Sulaiman for the Pacquiao-Oscar De La Hoya event.
                                                                         -----
Even though Cotto is considered the defending champion, the seating arrangements for the press conference left little doubt as to which fighter is the star attraction. While five of Pacquiao’s associates were permitted to sit on the dais, only two members from team Cotto were given a placement.

Incidentally, the organizers sat Pacquiao’s conditioning coach Alex Ariza and advisor Michael Koncz next to each other, and despite a well-documented bust-up between the two, they were all smiles on Thursday. Both men got a chuckle when Bob Arum described Koncz as the media’s “whipping boy” of the last few weeks. Although Ariza, who reportedly launched a two-fisted flurry at Koncz last month, didn’t seem quite as willing as Koncz to engage in the banter.
                                                                        -----
While most insiders are favoring a Pacquiao victory, former three-weight world titlist Iran Barkley believes Cotto can overcome the odds on Saturday. “I like Cotto, he’s very tough,” said Barkley. “And he’s had to put up with Bob Arum for the whole of his career; that means he has good mental strength.”

Anony:  AGAIN... CHECK THIS OUT..... "Even though Cotto is considered the defending champion, the seating arrangements for the press conference left little doubt as to which fighter is the star attraction. While five of Pacquiao’s associates were permitted to sit on the dais, only two members from team Cotto were given a placement." where the heck is the recognition to the champion???? Where was my flag at the press conference???? and I know they put it up to buy more Boricuas into buying PPV but still people get to know that another puertorican GREAT BOXER is, again, doing his duty. Our duty. I'm really mad about this "all Manny" coverage and I know he deserves some of it BUT PLEASE... it looks like Cotto doesn't deserve to fight "such a star". I'm tire of it, Cotto and my country deserves better.

Fe'Roz:  One thing is certain. What Manny has done for boxing is beyond measure. The NY Times and the Wall Street Journal are the largest distribution newspapers in the world. And Time Magazine! To the gathering public, Manny Pacquiao has given boxing back it's Game. And a Face. His dignity, his courage, and his style have inspired many and attracted more. he has become to boxing what Ali, Sugar Ray, Tyson were in previous generations. PPV numbers are simply metrics. P4P totally subjective. What is now fact is the power now vested in the Little Man from General Santos City. This is a special man to whom I offer many thanks. For being who he is.... and doing all he has.
Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 11:14:07 PM
Fe'Roz:  Prediction. Cotto is cut early but fight ends with Manny winning UD.
Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 11:17:01 PM
Buboy F:  Have no doubt. It's going to be Manny Pacquiao winning by a knockout in the third. Add to it, Manny will do it without a scratch. Please, no excuses for Cotto after the fight.
Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 11:24:29 PM
Fe'Roz @ Anony:  Respect for Manny does not imply disrespect for Miguel. It's just that Manny, fair or not, is the public face of boxing today.
Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 11:46:02 PM
arturo:  I think Pacquiao is at his peak, but he has a very focused Cotto waiting for that bell to ring.I want Cotto to win but he must stay away from the left hand that everyone sees...except the guy that feels it.

AND IT WOULD BE MORE LUCKIER IF MANNY WINS THE NEW WORLD RECORD 7 DIVISION TITLE. MANNY INSPIRED A LOT OF PEOPLE. WIN OR LOSE, YOU WILL NEVER QUESTION THE HEART OF MANNY PACQUIAO.

NOW, I'VE JUST HEARD THAT COTTOS TEAM DURING "THE FINAL PRESSCON" IS PREPARING A PLAN 'B' IN CASE I GUESS IF PLAN 'A' WOULD FAIL..HONESTLY, I JUST WISH THAT IT WON'T BE PLAN "BALLS".

dyolens:  Magic number is four. During Manny's training in the Philippines, the country is hit by four typhoons, three of which are in the category of super typhoons which killed many and rendered thousands of families homeless and literally wash away everything they've got! In between training which Freddie deemed to be pressed for time , Manny found time to squeeze time to deliver personally relief goods to stricken areas. I'd say it will be over within four rounds or four minutes.

BLUE4COR:  Pacquiao by TKO in the 4th. Referee Bayless will put the bout to a halt due to the EXCESSIVE, UNANSWERED VOLUME OF PUNCHES being put up by the Pacman. on Cotto. The crowd will go wild and crazy. HBO will hang on to the air untill Michael Buffer formally announces ........And now...... ladies and gentlemen............never before in the history of boxing......the whole world have witnessed..........whether they wanna believe it or not what they are seeing ...... in front of their own very eyes... The new..the first ever..........

greg:  THE REALITY IS, COTTO IS UNEASY EVEN IN THE PRESS CON. A CLEAR SIGN OF INFERIORITY. ITS LIKE WHAT HAD HAPPENED W/ DELA HOYA-PAQUIAO FIGHT. I BET YOU'RE RIGHT BUBOY F. IT WILL BE OVER IN THE 3RD ROUND. AND PLEEASE..... NO MORE EXCUSES ON COTTO. GO PHILIPPINES! GO MANNY! HURRAE!!!

Master Snake:  I know Manny is a real nice guy and cute like a little schoolboy but I don't think that trick is going to take Cotto off his game. He saw what happened to Hatton. Plus, I don't see the entertainment in a fighter acting like a clown in a rubber suit for some lame movie. Cotto is going to do the sport a service and bring this kid back down to Earth. Does anyone else here see how easily Pac is getting played by those around him? Cotto walks the walk. A true warrior. He will soften Pac up with some body shots and then guide him into the late rounds where his frustration will aid in him getting worked over real nice.
Thursday Nov 12, 2009 08:44:12 AM
JEFF:  PACMAN WILL KO COTTO IN 3 ROUNDS
Thursday Nov 12, 2009 09:10:36 AM
Fresh:  As the clock strikes 12 midnight in the morning of November 15th, there will be a new face of boxing. No way Mayweather will be able to run and duck a true challenge in his division. The running around will be over, the pride of Puerto Rico will have his hands raised and the world will come to realize that this sport of boxing is based more on popularity and recent flash then overall talent and skill. I will not get into mannys last opponents but what i will do is bring up the fact that the guy who looked to have beat manny twice(marquez) was embarrased by a defensive driven mayweather. Pacquiao gets worn down throught the fight and gets KO in the 10th round.
Thursday Nov 12, 2009 09:42:52 AM
#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  @Anony, you need to stop your wining already. Who cares if Cotto isn't getting the right amount of recognition you think he deserves. You must know Manny is the draw who is the P4P King, six time going to be seven world champ, and is the most popular boxer in the world.
Thursday Nov 12, 2009 10:22:48 AM
lillou:  its seems that every day that goes by miguel cotto is fighting greater odds besides fighting manny, he has to deal with a promoter that would sale his mother and whole family for a dollar and people talk about don king ! second he has to deal with hand picked judges and the WBO thats kissing bob aram's a$$ and the bookmakers that whan cotto wins will lose alot of money. now tell don't you think the dock is staked ?

vegasrican:  Another big figth for a great TAINO!! who has come to his cross roads.we puerto rican are alway fighting greater odds like W benites and trinida this is no diffrent.and all you phillipinos should thank cotto for nov 14. good luck to both

#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  @Anony, until Manny retires which should be after two more fights.
Thursday Nov 12, 2009 12:39:46 PM
Maverick:  “I have trained very hard and I know the skills of Manny, but I have a gameplan,” said Cotto. Dela Hoya and Hatton had said the same thing, but to no avail. If Cotto thinks he know's everything about Manny, he should think again.
Thursday Nov 12, 2009 12:53:26 PM
Fe'Roz :  Everyone has a game plan until they get hit. The one that takes the other out of his will most likely be the winner. If Manny can take Miguel's power shots, it's going to be a long night ...or a very short one for Miguel. And vica versa. If Miguel can take Manny's shot(s)... that's shots as in plural....then Manny is in for the fight of his life. Both men are ready. no excuses. Let's watch what my arguably the fight of this Century thus far.
Thursday Nov 12, 2009 04:51:32 PM
MisterLee:  What makes pple think Cotto can take pacquiao's sunday punch? pple are behaving like cotto is facing a smaller feather weight man, and not a smaller man who punches like a jr. middle with the speed of a bantamweight and a high ring iq. Cotto has a weaker chin than oscar de la hoya, who's only been down and out from liver punch prior to manny knocking him out. Pple said the same thing about hatton too... what IF hatton can take manny's power and take him in deep... wishful thinking... where's Go West, b/c we have the King of Wishful Thinking baby!! That joke was served with Maiz. Thank you, i'll be in here all week folks...
Thursday Nov 12, 2009 07:55:00 PM
KOKev:  Nobody knows Pacman better than Freddie Roach. Before training camp- Roach was very concerned that Pacman was too distracted and wouldn't train hard. Plus he knows Cotto is a solid Champion. But as training camp ends, Roach sees that Pacman is still peaking. This is not the same Manny that fought Marquez. But rather more skilled, Bigger, Stronger, and Faster??!!!???!! than before!!!! Power in both hands. Defensively avoids getting hit. Roach is publicly saying Pacman will knock Cotto out. Roach doesn't think this- instead he's telling the world IT will happen. Thats how much confidence he has in Pacman right now. On the other hand Cotto is slower than before, not as strong as before, slows down faster than before, and not MENTALLY as strong as before. Cotto is a warrior no doubt. But its just Manny's time right now. Even diehard boricua fans (who know their boxing) can sense this. You can disagree with me but One thing all boxing fans will agree with- This will probaly be the biggest fight of our generation. Forget Gayweather- I want to see Pacman vs. Cotto 2. That means 1 more year of Gayweather not fighting- unless he wants to fight Mosely.
Thursday Nov 12, 2009 08:04:21 PM
the Roast:  @Caveman, What if Hatton can take Manny's power and drag him into the deep water, HA! What kind of idiot would ever think that? Whoo hoo thats funny! I am wiping the tears of laughter away.. Hatton taking the punch, heh heh....

Luc:  Hey guys, just be happy that Manny was given the star treatment because he deserve it and he wins his high octane big fights unlike CHICKEN OSCAR LOSES HIS BIG FIGHTS AND WON'T EVEN ADMIT THAT HE WAS NOT HURT WITH MANNY'S PUNCHES! LOL!

bill major:  Fe'Roz @ FOS:,love the towel comment, LOL im still laughing. but all the bs aside,we have Two great fighters and great human beings that are what makes boxing such a great sport. these two guys have carried themselves so proudly throughout their careers, loving their countrys and countrymen ,fighting every fight to make them proud of them. they have alot of pressure on them for this one big fight and unfortunately one of them has to lose. to me ,it will be sad as well as happy when that time comes.i love both guys ,they are terrific fighters and the loser will go on to gain another title and make millions more ,that goes to show youy how well thought of they are. my thought is still the same. pacquiao in 3 rds by a devastating KO.

CobraCommander:  Im a cotto fan.. but, personally, i think cotto was drawn in to the tricks( or strategies, as u might say) of the pacquiao team. I mean, roach, pacman, ariza and the rest of the team REALLY knows which opponent to knock down! Let alone B. Arum, who is not about to let his prized superstar(Pacman) to go down the canvass! So i say, even before fight night.. the winner is already determined! To cotto, im hands down to you amigo, i just wish i was there to stop u makin that deal! Man, iv had enaf of this pacquiao.. Id really love to see PACQUIAO vs FRED ROACH!! and let people decide whose the champ! ANYONE AGREE WITH ME?????
