JC Chavez Jr., Troy Rowland, Soto-Karass & Alfonso Gomez

By David A. Avila

WEST L.A.-The big fight looms in a couple of days in the neon lit streets of Las Vegas, so that means a lot of traveling from my residence in slow-paced Riverside to the faster streets of Los Angeles.

It all began last week when media days were held first for Miguel Cotto, then followed by Manny Pacquiao’s the following day. Back and forth I drove needing to study the two elite fighters who are set to clash Saturday Nov. 14, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

This week a media day was held for participants of the HBO pay-per-view under card.

First, Mexico’s Jesus Soto Karass, an Antonio Margarito clone from Los Mochis, fights popular Alfonso Gomez (20-4-2, 10 KOs). Yes, it’s that Gomez who participated in the first edition of the Contender reality TV show in 2005.

The last time we saw Gomez on national television he was violently stopped by Cotto in a bid to win the world title. Since that loss, the fighter who won America’s heart with his honesty and class has reeled off two wins and is ready for another pivotal clash with a welterweight juggernaut Soto Karass.

Soto Karass (24-3-3, 16 KOs) fights just like his fellow countryman and stable mate Margarito. They have the same trainer and the same seek and destroy style. Soto Karass wants this fight badly because he remembers sparring Gomez years ago and being told afterward that he lost his butt in the sparring session.

“Yes I had a black eye and didn’t look good in that sparring session but this is going to be much different,” said Soto Karass who hasn’t lost a fight in four years including wins over David Estrada, Chris Smith and Michel Rosales. “I’m not looking at this personal, this is a sport, but I am going to win this fight.”

Many experts see this fight as the best of the night aside from Pacman-Cotto.

“It’s going to be a bloodbath,” says Top Rank’s Bob Arum.

One thing about Soto Karass and Gomez is they have huge hearts and are very prideful. Though Soto Karass promises to show a few changes including more boxing, don’t expect either fighter to back away for long.

“I’m prepared to do the sort of things that are necessary,” Soto Karass said while inside the Pound for Pound Gym in West L.A.

Chavez vs. Rowland

Also in the gym was Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (40-0-1, 30 KOs) who is moving into the middleweight division to fight Michigan’s Troy Rowland (25-2, 7 KOs). It’s the son of the icon’s first step into the big pond of middleweights.

“He can’t make 154 pounds any more,” said Arum. “He keeps growing. He’s huge.”

In his last few fights that took place in the 154-pound junior middleweight division, Chavez has found it a little more difficult putting them away. Though he knocked out Jason LeHoullier in one round, he had trouble with Matt Vanda and Luciano Cuello.

Personally I’ve known Chavez Jr. since he was 12 or 13 and knew back then he would grow much larger than his father. He’s improved immensely since he first turned pro at 17 years old but now he’s fighting guys that are basically the same size.

Rowland trains in Grand Rapids, Mich. in one of Floyd Mayweather’s gyms. In fact, he once sparred with Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

“He probably doesn’t remember sparring me,” Rowland said. “It was a while ago.”

One thing about the Michigan fighters is they know how to fight. They’re schooled in the finer points of defense and accuracy.

Could Rowland be the guy to unseat the undefeated Chavez?

“He’s got a lot of experience,” said David Packer who trains Rowland. “His strength is his conditioning.”

Unlike Chavez, who has never worked as an adult, Rowland has always held a full-time job whether in construction or putting up siding in cold winters or hot summers. He’s got that Mid-Western grit.

One huge incentive is not just fighting Chavez, but fighting in the new big fight capital of the world Las Vegas.

“It’s great. It’s something I always wanted to do,” said Rowland, 34, who thought his dream of fighting in Las Vegas might not come true. “It’s something I had missing in my career.”

What also has been missing in his career is realization that he’s only lost twice in 27 pro fights since he began fighting professionally in 2000. He’s beaten middleweights like Andrew Council, Charles Whittaker and Epifanio Mendoza. Yes, that Mendoza who lost a controversial decision to Jeff Lacy a year ago.

“It was like a dream come true when they asked me to fight,” said Rowland.

That could result in a nightmare for Chavez. We’ll see Saturday night.

Arturo:  This guy from Michigan won a raffle to fight Chavez jr.That guy is lucky! I'm going to try to fight Chavez Jr just so I can go to Vegas. He might start fighting real contenders after his 60th fight so maybe I can start boxing today and fight him next year in the Pacman Vs Mayweather undercard.

Master Snake :  Homeboy Rowland looks like he's got some Mid-Western crank in his system. Works full-time and has energy to train at 34. He could be a spokesman for meth use. The palooka will get combusted in RD4.

RIVERSIDE:  i was huge jc super star fan growing up, but jr doesn't cut it, i believe the first time he get is ring with a real top ten middleweight contender he will loose

Jason:  Another garbage undercard. Will HBO ever learn? It astonishes me that despite the fans and boxing media outrage in recent years, they continue to completely ignore that sentiment and put forward these insulting undercards. Don't they realize that with all the eyes that will be tuning in, they should put their best foot forward? This should not require a PHD. Ok, 'Gomez' vs 'the other guy' perhaps warrants an ESPN FNF's or Versus slot, based on the expected action. But where does this fight lead for either one? Who's ready for Cotto vs Gomez 2/other guy or PacMan vs Gomez/other guy? As for Chavez, we all know that he's this era's Hector Camacho Jr, cashing in on the name, so nothing further needs to be said about him here. In the 1990's, I remember when undercards mattered. I remember being psyched for 9pm (EST) SHARP, because my buddies and I wanted to see all the fights. You know what happens these days? We order it and then watch college football or listen to music with the fight/football ON MUTE until 11:30. The idea of channel surfing in the 90's would have been blasphemous. In any event, congratulations HBO! You've put together another tired and completely meaningless undercard. Well done.

Oddsmaker:  Wow another exciting night of boxing , can't wait to watch the fight and looks like the undercard is great some tough fighters lets get ready to rumble !!!!

Castro:  I got Chavez Jr. on this one for sure. This kid can bang & he's got a tough chin...just like his father! Don't worry - we'll all get to see him do his thing against top 10 contenders real soon! He'll prove all doubters wrong. Don't blame him for the fights he's had so far in his career. If you wanna blame someone....blame his promoter "The Gatekeeper" Bob Arum!

#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  Horrible undercard! Atleast they have Soto in there who is always willing to brawl. Hopefully these fights go quick. I guess it makes up for it at the main event.

RIVERSIDE@CASTRO:  hey bud have you seen chavez jr fight before? did you know that rowland last 4 opponents have combined record of 43 wins and 37 loses, you got chavez winning this one , i hope so and fight will probably be competive, because this is chavez jr level of boxing, boxers call the shots not promoters
Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 01:34:30 PM
Castro@Riverside:  Hell yeah I've seen Jr. fight before & he's on point. Just because his opponent & the last 4 dudes he's(Rowland) fought have whack records doesn't mean there won't be any surprises come fight night. I'm just saying Jr. is the real deal & only time will tell. As for fighters calling the shots...ok it's true they may have SOME say as to who they fight, but not entirely. They are paid to fight not to play matchmaker. (except if your name is Money Mayweather or Roy Jones)LOL Furthermore, if fighters think they can try to call the shots all the time - like who they will fight & who they won't fight. They'd more than likely be shelved & the next fighter in line who is more than willing to get a shot will do so & get paid. It's a sad fact, but true. One recent example that comes to mind is (Ortiz vs Maidana). We all know how that one ended up. Team Golden Boy told him(Ortiz) where to go cuz they figured "we got this". He went & got dealt with! Oh well though, that's the name of the game. I'm no expert, but I think promoters have a lot more advantage over their fighters then most people think. Including the fighters themselves. "Once you sign - you're ass is mine"

RIVERSIDE @CASTRO:  castro you make some good points, i guess when boxer is up and comer, promoter has some control, big time boxers dictate who they want to fight, i was big jc super star fan, his son does not have the hunger to succeed in boxing, can you imagine chavez jr vs pavlik, all of jr opponents have been screen to fit right into jr style, they can't be to fast, too strong, too big and must have average boxing skills, it doesn't take 40 fights to figure out he is not better than the average fighter, i wish the best of luck to jr, but he is no lion of culican

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
