Chad Bad Enough, Angulo KOs Yorgey
By George Kimball
HARTFORD, Conn. -In a facile and largely untroubled performance in a fight he at no time seemed in any danger of losing, Chad Dawson took the measure of 40 year-old Glen Johnson and remained undefeated at 28-0, solidifying his claim as the world's best light-heavyweight. But he sure wasn't taking any chances.
On the other hand, when Dawson somewhat giddily proclaimed afterward "I had to put on a show for the home folks," some of the home folks seemed to be shaking their heads as if to say "Did he just say that?" That Bad Chad had just won a version of the 175-pound championship for the third time was indisputable, but that, at least on this evening, Chad was Bad at all remains somewhat open to dispute.
Twenty years after Marlon Starling defended his WBC welterweight title when Saturday night's venue was still the Hartford Civic Center, promoters were proclaiming HBO's incursion into the XL Center "Title Night in Hartford," although in fact, both titles at stake were of the 'interim' variety. Perhaps the WBC was feeling somewhat guilty about Dawson, who resigned first the WBC belt and then the IBF's at the behest of television networks, and didn't even have a magazine belt to show for it, but several weeks ago Jose Sulaiman, to Dawson's surprise as much as anyone else's, voluntarily put the interim tag on the Johnson rematch. In practical terms this doesn't mean much, other than that the winner of Jean Pascal-Adrian Diaconu II in Montreal next month is now obligated to face Dawson.
Unless, of course, HBO has other plans for Chad, in which case he could find himself at some future date the first undefeated fighter in light-heavyweight history to win the 175-pound title four times.
Saturday's other interim designation was more curious still. The WBO decided to put the interim tag on the Alfredo Angulo-Harry Joe Yorgey mismatch, even though at the time the Body Odor folks made the ruling they already had not only a champion (Sergei Dzindziruk) and an interim champion (Paul Williams), but a mandatory contender (Kermit Cintron) who had already soundly whipped Angulo waiting in the wings.
Since Dawson had been fairly convincing in beating Johnson (116-112 on all three cards) in their 2008 bout, it's not clear exactly what about it warranted a rematch, but even though a couple of the scorecards were closer this time around, the issue was never in doubt. From the first round on the bout took on a sameness: Johnson seemed positively geriatric as he attempted to apply the pressure and walk Dawson down; Dawson would dutifully retreat for a time and then abruptly stand his ground to snap off a couple of right jabs followed by a stiff left.
Since Johnson for the most part couldn't get near Dawson, and since Dawson seemed perfectly happy to bang the lefts off Johnson's shoulders when he missed and his chest when he didn't, neither man looked much as if he'd been in a fight at all after twelve rounds. In their first meeting, Johnson had done his best to wear Dawson down and make a fight of it in the latter rounds, and hoped to do the same on this night, except his body wouldn't cooperate.
That two judges -- Duane Ford and Mike Pernick -- had it 115-113 was mildly surprising. The Sweet Science card agreed with Glenn Feldman's 117-111 tally, and many ringsiders had Dawson winning by an even wider margin. Even Glencoffe seemed surprised that a couple of judges had it that close.
On the other hand, Johnson has had a pretty nice run, considering that he was widely assumed to be washed up as he entered his thirties with four straight losses. In fact between November of 1999 and November of 2003, Johnson won just three of 11 fights.
Though none the worse for wear, he was plainly weary from chasing Dawson around all night, and openly spoke of possible retirement afterward.
"I'll see what phone calls I get," said the Jamaican-born "Road Warrior. "If something comes along that makes sense then I might fight again. If there's nothing worthwhile, I'll probably retire."
If this was indeed his swan song, Johnson will go out with a career log of 49-13-2.
Angulo-Yorgey
Angulo had been considered a looming presence in the 154-pound division until last May, when he was more or less exposed by Cintron in Florida. Yorgey, on the other hand, had labored in total obscurity until he beat previously undefeated Jason LeHoullier last August and then knocked out another unbeaten prospect, Ronald Hearns, in March.
The fact that boxing fans now knew his name didn't mean he was ready for Angulo; on the other hand, Yorgey actually boxed well enough for the first two minutes of the fight to carry the first round on all three judge's cards, but even over that final minute of the opening round Angulo's shots were beginning to find their mark and it seemed only a matter of time.
That Yorgey lasted into the third can almost exclusively be attributed to the fact that referee Johnny Callas experienced a frightening in-ring meltdown that saw him totally lose control of the fight. In the second round Angulo hurt Yorgey with a couple of hard right hands, and then, like a man playing Whack-a-Mole, drove him to his haunches and finally to the floor in his own corner.
Angulo appeared to land at least two more punches after his opponent was down, but not only did the act go unpunished, the next thing you knew the referee was waving the two back into action. Or was he?
With Angulo on the brink of finishing his opponent, the referee stepped between the fighters and separated them for no apparent reason (The best we can figure, Callas may have thought of administering a standing-8 and then, realizing that the rule did not obtain, thought better of it.) Having now broken the combatants, he flung Yorgey aside to get him out of the way and consequently had his back turned when Yorgey's legs all but gave way beneath him.
Angulo continued his brutal attack in the third, and it was beginning to look as if the only way it might be stopped would be if Yorgey's corner did it for him, but then Angulo landed a right and then a left that sent Yorgey down for keeps. By now even Callas had to wave it off. The victim remained on the canvas for several minutes and an ambulance was eventually summoned.
When Yorgey’s new trainer Jack Loew angrily complained about the referee's mishandling of the bout even Callas appeared to acknowledge that he'd had a bad night.
"Sorry, Jack," he said.
The end had come at 1:03 of the third. The new 'interim champion' is now 16-1, while Yorgey, having absorbed his first loss, is 22-1-1.
Prelims
Philadelphia middleweight Tyrone Brunson remained undefeated at 21-0-1 with a third-round kayo of another Philly-based fighter, Puerto Rican-born Jose Medina (15-16). After Brunson caught Medina to a hard shot to the short ribs, the opponent dropped to his knee and took Dick Flaherty's count without making any move to arise. The end, which came at 1:31 of the third, continued a downward spiral for Medina, who has now dropped seven of his last eight.
Although Bobby DaLuz of Providence bills himself as "Don't Lose," he apparently does little else. California junior feather Chris Avalos won every round on Duane Ford's 80-71 scorecard, seven of eight (79-73) on those of Mchael Pernick and Duke Lawson, in posting a unanimous decision that raised his record to 13-0, while DaLuz fell to 12-22-3.
In what may have been the most bizarre bout of the undercard, Colombian Francisco Osorio finally had to take control of matters himself to earn a well-deserved TKO loss to Michael Oliveria. Osorio's bout against the unbeaten Florida teenager had been scheduled, and announced, for six rounds, but after half a dozen stanzas a round-card girl materialized in the ring toting a "7" sign, and referee Joe Lupino shrugged and ordered the fighters back into action. Following that round, Osorios, reasoning that this was more punishment than he had bargained for, declined to come out for the eighth and saw his record fall to 12-7. Oliveira is now 9-0.
Nicaraguan opponent Octavio Narvaez (7-8-1) put up a good effort in his 9-rounder against undefeated Mexican Orlando Lora (26-0-1), it was not enough to carry the day on the cards of the judges. Lawson scored it 78-75, Glenn Feldman and Don Trella 77-75, all for Lora. The crowd, which had apparently gotten carried away by Narvaez' animated enthuisiasm, booed the verdict.
New York heavyweight Eman Ali improved to 3-0 with a first round knockout over Kelsey Arnold (1-4-2) of Lexington, Tenn.

the brutality of the Yorgey /Angulo fight was way excessive,.. where was his cornermens towell...Angulo was hitting Harry Joes head like a speed bag,.. I thought it was a fatality.... glad Yorgey's alright...beating the hobbyist Hearns was no prerequisite for Yorgey to get into the ring with `El Pero..

Wow, Yorgey had the RIGHT man in the corner, Jack "Double Jab" Loew. I don't remember hearing ANYTHING useful being told to Yorgey in between rounds other then DJ Loew yelling at the ref (that really helps his fighter focus on the fight plan!). Forget the ref, DJ loew is a liability to his fighters... he sux!

I was at the fight as I have been at Harry Joe Yorgeys last four or five fights. Harry's heart betrayed him and the ref should be punished. This KO was bad for boxing. i want to rewatch the fight before i say that his corner did nothing to help him. At the end of the second HJ was really hurt and his corner was slow with the stool and aid. It almost looked like my friend was set up by his corner. Harry is a better fighter than what was shown last night. He just got rocked early and than often thanks to the poor officiating and a better fighter on that night

Give me a break. Someone really tell me how a fight between Angulo and Yorgey deserves and interim title status? Angulo gets dominated in every way by Kermit Cintron...beats 2 nobody's to rebound his career and then fights Harry Yorgey for an interim title? Did anyone miss that Kermit Cintron was the number on contender ahead of Angulo and Yorgey. So let me get this right. You destroy a fighter and have a higher ranking afterward but the guy you beat bypasses you and fights another guy who is below you for an interim title fight?? This makes no sense what-so-every...none! Cintron is the only one of these 3 fighters who actually deserves a championship fight. His only losses were to Margarito who we now know is a cheater but Cintron learns from his defeats, moves on and earns his way back. Angulo is at best a "good" fighter right now. He "might" end up being a champion some day but we all saw how very average he looked against the far superior Cintron. Now I know his supporters and HBO and Gary Shaw for that matter will never want to hear any of this but these are the facts. It really is a situation like this that gives Boxing a "black eye". Maybe we can't call it cheating but it really is. How can Cintron simply be bypassed by two fighters below him in the rankings, with one of them being the very guy he just destroyed. It's a joke!

my son said he doesn't want to see Dawson fight unless he's having trouble falling asleep and is being told a bedtime story at the same time,... Dawson is very slick and controls distance very well. after all the talk Johnson was made to look like he was just going thru motions,... I've had more dramatic walks in park holding hands with my fiance',.. Dawson is much more pleasing on the eye when faced with a dangerous foe,.. plenty of Crow being served all around,.. take yer pick,. mild or spicey...

Yeah man,...great comments riverside,..... I've seen guys stopped just for not being competitive,..and never had to take that kind of punishment to catch the refs attention,.. ... Loew know's he should have never let his fighter out of the corner,..(or even take such a hard fight)... ....but I guess them Youngstown guys believe in fighting with thier faces in hopes that if they catch enough punches they'll tire the other guy out.....

I think you have a point there,... something seemed "Broken" in Yorgeys corner,... somthing basic,.. like the fundamental regard for the boxers safety and health,.. they're so used to taking punches and fighting off of heart alone,.. the seem to believe it's normal to try to "gut" out a win even in the face of unbelievable odds...

Seeing Yorgey get hit the second time while totaly unconcious was the sickest thing I've seen in boxing for a while, worse than the 'Mr.Happy Mouth' that Rocky Juarez gave to Jorge Barrios. I thought I was flashbacking to Michael Watson. Thank the Good Lord Yorgey was okay, and curse the ref and Loew for risking the man's life. Dawson dominated in class fashion I thought, poor Glen was never in it. 118-110. Dawson vs Pascal seems obvious. Cloud is exciting but needs another name on the up. Woods was on his way out anyway. Anybody else catch Max K's faux pas about James Kirkland's 'Take no prisoners' style? Classic. EL TOONOY

Angulo is a pressure fighter with power. Too bad Kirkland is in jail, a match-up between the two would be awesome. Chad Dawson boxed beautifully, Glen Johnson's stalking was ugly (he did make it ugly afterall or was he always that ugly). Good boxing exibition but a booooring fight.

As the HBO commentators pointed out, Yorgey's original team wanted to bring their fighter up slowly--they wisely kept Yorgey fighting the smaller venues in Philly so that he could learn his trade. Instead. Yorgey illegally broke his contract with Don Elbaum et al, thinking he knew better. Yorgey signed with Art Pellulo, started training with Loew and look what happened. Plain and simple, his new people fed him to the sharks, or in this case the Pitbull. I wonder how Yorgey felt watching Pellulo hugging Angulo after the fight. Yorgey got suckered with promises of easy money and ended with a beating that will ensure that he never gets another shot at the title. Karma does exist. You arrogantly break a contract with the people who care about you, you listen to the greedy promises of men who care only for profit, and you get your ass kicked.

I think everyone is being a little bit unfair to Chad Dawson. Johnson has been stopped ONCE in well over 50 professional bouts, and that was a TKO by Bernard Hopkins in 1997. The dude has an iron chin and Dawson put on a dominant performance.
If you think it's so easy to knock Glen Johnson out, then maybe you some of you guys should try it for yourselves instead of talking crap about Dawson.

DJ Loew spinning all the horrible crow and lousy jams til you drop! Where was the police man officer uniform, or the indian chief, or firefighter outfit for that fight? I attribute that to Yorgey's loss. oh yeah, and he stinks. As a former driveway technician, he oughta know better than to "pave" a better way for his fighters, and passing them some knowledge, not just some lousy yelling and double jab business, scream at the referee, forget Loew's, it's all about Home Depot! That joke was served with maiz! Anyway, looking to be 2/3, i had johnson, pacquiao, ward. I had angulo of course, but a tune up fight, interim or not championship is a tune up fight, as a angulo fan, i an admit that, as opposed to making it like he defeated Generdo Hernandez or something, OH NO! You are spot on. When poor Harry Joe went looking for a more aggressive trainer to teach him to box, he must have asked directions for Jack's Gym and been sent to Lowe's Big Box. Last night he sadly looked like he got what he paid for. A discount trainer. Seriously, we've heard of corners forgetting extra mouth guards, Endswell and all sort of other essentials . But a towel ! Where the f*#k was the towel!! And his compassion! I despise Loew for letting that fight go for so long. I fear for Yorgey tomorrow and in the future. Manny Steweard was right. He should not fight in the gym or elsewhere for months to come. But given Loew's poor judgement and low regard for his charge, you can expect to see Yorgey back for his next beating before you can say.... Double that jab.

S_ happens! THERE is a long history of boxers getting the ____ beat out of them, but coming back or going out like Yorgey. The ones who have died in the ring were not getting beat that seriously. This is the hurt business, not MMA or UFC. The bout would have been stopped in a MMA/UFC match, but boxing is not from that batch, and sometimes an arse you will catch. That is a part of the pain that you will gain in the business of legal mayhem. Lowe knew his fighter, and made a judgement call. A bad one in the view of many. But not in the view of the great boxing guro Manny Steward. As he said, the kid needs to be restricted from boxing or sparring for six months or so. Tommy Hearns was getting torn up by James "The Heat" Kinchen back in the day. If Manny would have stopped that bout, Tommy would not have come back and won. Also peeps hated Manny for not stopping the bout when his boxer Milton McCrory out KTFO by Don Curry. Yancy Dulvace (name misspelled of a Canadian champ) had Archie Moore out on his feet and had knocked him down about three times. The corner or the referee didn't stop it and Archie came through. Matthew Saad Muhammad was getting torn up by Marvin Johnson. The corner or the ref didn't stop it, and Muhammad came throught. Davey Moore was getting battered by Roberto Duran. The corner or the ref didn't stop it, and Davey suffered a Yorgey-type of knockout. Archie Moore was getting battered by Rocky Marciano. The corner or the ref didn't stop it, and the overmatched "Mongoose" was out like a deer hit by a speeding automobile. GOAT Ali was getting a job put on him by Larry Holmes. For a bit, the corner or ref wouldn't stop it, and finally the great boxing guru Angie Dundee tuned into reality and put it to an end. Not long after that the ref committed suicide. Given the opportunity, Loew would have stop the bout. But El Perro was not in the mood for not chewing up arse. Holla!

Ditto that! Camp Pacquiao is da haps! I will be spending less time in this universe. In the future, I will probably just be around when Manny gets down. Translation into English what we hollered about. He said to me, "Kuya, why do you put up with those ____(A term that I will not translate). You know how the ____ pose and fake." "I know, but it is a good boxing site with some good, educated people on it." "Come on, Kuya," he shot back at me. "Remember what you said to _____(I won't said the boxer's name) when he was having trouble with his girlfriend? I will repeat it to you. I read it in a magazine the other day. You know that writers be stealing your $hit." Remind what I said," I requested. "You said, 'Pinsun ko! Putting up with the wrong woman because she has good sex with you sometimes, is like hurting your arse to get admitted to the Emergency Room because they serve good lumpita and balut sometimes." "Wow!" I said. "Makes a lot sense. Take this darn Blackberry and let's get back to training and funning. It's PacMan TIME! It's Pinoy TIME! It's Asian TIME! GET the TIME Magazine! The internet I just another part of our lives; no more no less. It has shifted the means of communication para-dynamically but it nevertheless now part of our culture. A tool. Tools are only as good or bad as those who use them. We are the ones who make choices. we can read what we want, or not at all. We can respond and/or interact, or not at all. which choices we make and how we respond is but another extension of how we live our lives. My point: There is no reason to acknowledge, respond and/or act out on the internet than there is on the street. If we did every time there was provocation, NY would look like Bagdad. It doesn't. So treat this space the way you treat others. With respect. pc
