Dundee, Richardson, McGirt, Shields Talk Pacquiao-Cotto

EXPERT TRAINERS WEIGH-IN ON PACQUIAO VS COTTO

LAS VEGAS (November 6, 2009)-The late great boxing trainer Eddie Futch, who counted six world heavyweight champions as his pupils, always said a fighter's corner played an essential role in a competitive fight's outcome.  With stakes high for the Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto fight on Saturday, November 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena live on HBO Pay-Per-View®, today's most decorated trainers give their insight into the match-up and whether or not the experienced corner of Manny Pacquiao, with esteemed trainer Freddie Roach, will out-perform the lesser known Cotto corner lead by Joe Santiago. Hear from the experts themselves as they breakdown and predict the outcome of this tremendous fight.

ANGELO DUNDEE

Trainer Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard

ANALYSIS

"It's gonna be a great, great fight. I have seen Cotto train twice now, and he's a stone cold professional fighter. He was oblivious to the outside world when I saw him training. He's very focused.

"You have a perfect blending of style in this fight. If I ever had a fighter fighting Pacquiao, I would implement the things that Cotto brings to the table. Certain ingredients that spell Cotto, will give Pacquiao trouble.

"Cotto is a pressure fighter and he's going to be on Pacquiao from the get go. He's got a great left hook, he's a good body puncher and he's very aggressive. I see a very tough distance fight. There is going to be blood.

Pacquiao takes it to you all the time but in this fight is going to have to back up.  He's a smart, slick, and great hand speed. Cotto counters those things."

ON THE CORNERS

"Cotto is his own man. He's a complete and solid pro. Him and his trainer, they look like they get along just fine. Cotto looks like a man possessed. If something goes wrong, yes, the corner has to step in. But as a trainer, you're only as good as the fighter.

"When the bell rings, Freddie will be in one corner, the two guys will be in the ring. He won't be able to fight for Manny. If an emergency happens, he'll be there. The better one will be Freddie in case of an emergency. You're talking about a guy who has a wealth of experience. You can't make a comparison.

Prediction

"But if you're looking for an edge, I don't think the corners will play into the fight. The best guy will win."

NAZIM RICHARDSON

Trainer Bernard Hopkins and Shane Mosley

ANALYSIS

"I think Pacquiao and Freddie have such a strong and trusting relationship that they will be fine with whatever might happen in the ring.  I think Pacquiao really trusts Freddie's judgment and if it gets rough in there and Pacquiao sees it one way and Freddie gives him a different take on the situation, Manny is going to do what Freddie tells him.  That is an incredible trust between a boxer and his trainer and one that will be to their advantage that night.

"On the other hand and for Cotto's corner the question becomes how well their response rate is going to be if and when Cotto gets in trouble.  In a big fight like this a fighter needs to hear a clear message.  It might be hard for him to receive a clear message after listening to Evangelista for so long.  So something he might be used could get lost in translation with the new messenger.

"If Cotto gets cut in this one, it is a lot different from the Clottey fight.  Clottey sets a pace and sticks with it for most of the fight.  But not Pacquiao because he switches up.  So the question becomes will the corner be able to keep Cotto in the right mindset, work on the cut and still give him the right information?  That will be the hardest part of their job that night and it will be admirable if they can get it done for their fighter."

Prediction

"I think Manny Pacquiao is going to steal the fight that night.  He is good at letting his size fool people and when they see him darting around the ring looking scrappy, boxing and moving and he's not KO'd, it translate to a round for him.  But calling Pacquiao little in this weight class is like calling Mike Tyson a little heavyweight.  Pacquiao is a solid guy but his size fools people. He knows how to make the round look like the little guy is dominating a big man.

"Cotto is capable of beating him but for him the game plan is essential and he has to stay true to that plan."

BUDDY MCGIRT

Trainer Arturo Gatti, Antonio Tarver, Vernon Forrest

ANALYSIS

"Pacquiao might have the psychological edge here as he totally trust Freddie and is very comfortable with him.  Cotto's trainer Joe Santiago has never been in this situation before and it is important how he handles it.  If he, Joe, can remain calm, not get caught up in the media hype, they should be okay. I don't know him or his frame of mind but it is a big stage for someone who hasn't been there before.

Prediction

"I don't think it is going to come down to either corner.  These guys are veterans who know how to make adjustments while they are fighting.  In that sense, Cotto is a better adjuster than Pacquiao, as he has had to do in several fights already.  I don't remember a fight (except the Marquez fight) when Pacquiao was in trouble like Cotto has been.  I think Cotto can give Pacquiao trouble and then we will see how he handles it.

RONNIE SHIELDS

Trainer Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Vernon Forrest, Juan Diaz and Rocky Juarez

OVERVIEW

"Miguel Cotto is a legitimate welterweight that proves himself time and time again. I think fighting at 145 lbs is not going to be a problem for Cotto. Its just two pounds under the welterweight limit. He's got good strength, and first of all, his loss to Margarito proves to me that he can take a great shot. Second, Margarito is a big guy, and Pacquiao is a small guy. Pacquiao has a lot of speed, but I just feel that Cotto is going to walk through him. There is no way that Pacquiao is going to be able to wear Cotto down. As the fight goes on, Cotto is going to get much stronger. I think he's going to put the pressure on Pacquiao.

"We all saw in the De La Hoya fight, how Pacquiao used speed to his advantage. Pacquiao does pack a good punch. But Cotto's defense will offset him getting hit so much. Pacquiao cannot take Cotto's punches throughout the 12 rounds.

On The Corners-

Both fighters have good trainers. They both know what they are doing. But trainers can only help his guy so much. The fighter has to follow what the game plan is. I know that both trainers have a Plan B and possibly a Plan c should something go wrong. All in all, it really is up to the fighter. The trainers can only direct so much to the fighter. The fighter needs to go out there and have the confidence he can do what the trainer wants him to do. And if it doesn't work, you need to gut it out, and both guys have the ability to do that. But I think that it the advantage is for Cotto who has that power. And on the opposite end, I don't think that Pacquiao can hurt him enough.

Rebounding From Trouble Coming off of Last Fight-

I don't know why they criticized the corner. I think that Cotto did a great job against Clottey. I don't see why they criticized the trainer. The most important thing is what the judges think. The winner was Cotto, and I don't understand how can you criticize them for winning. If they lost, maybe you go back and say they should have done something different. In the fight, they have a game plan, and it falls to the fighter to follow it. If the fighter goes off the plan, that's when the corner must tell the fighter to make adjustments.

If anything, I think Clottey's corner messed up.

Both Roach and Santiago are good trainers, so both guys know what they are doing. Freddie Roach has shown that he has the capabilities to help his guy win, but the other guy has also done some things. This is only his second fight with Cotto, but he has shown the same thing. Neither one has the advantage. Freddie has more experience in the big fight, but that really doesn't mean anything.

I haven't seen Pacquiao cut recently, which shows the defense that he has. I have seen Cotto cut, but it didn't seem to bother him. But again, both guys have had the experience of being cut, so it's not going to be new to either one of them. It may favor Cotto though, because he has been cut and it hasn't bothered him.

If he uses his boxing skills, Cotto can get late stoppage. It's tough to get a knockout against Pacquiao, but I just think Cotto will have what it takes and he'll have the advantage in the end."

Pac Time:  Wow! These reports about Pac Man is not getting full reponse from Pinoys like they use to. These trainers are full of it. Pac Man is going to pulverized Cotto with rockets, missiles, torpedos, bombs and finally nuke Cotto. Alleged-never-proven plastic of Paris loaded handwraps has nothing on Pac Man. His hands are loaded with whoopa whop whup a$$ and his body is loaded with Pinoy steroids -- good foods, water and juices. Cotto is training himself. Margarito has messed up his head, and Cotto can no longer take the words of a seasoned trainer. He dumped his uncle and got a know nothing amateur trainer, who takes orders and $hit. Cotto has punked his own team, including that conditioning coach Phil Landman. Pac Man will knocking him out early. I feel like a marking bird saying that over and over. On November 14, it stops.

LOCO:  Man, I am going to make so much money betting for Cotto on this fight. There is no way that pac can defeat Cotto... Crazy filipinos are going to lose all their hard earned pesos.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 07:18:53 PM
Rey Buboy:  Right! Make a movie. Whenever things don't go the way that Americans want them to go, they just make a movie. In movies they win all the time. In life NOT! I guess Cotto is Rocky and he is saving the American from the Asian invasion. I hope that self-trained Cotto doesn't tap out or quit in the corner. Now I really want to see him knocked out. Besides, are these Yanks the only expert trainers. Why not ask Nacho Beristain for balance, or even Teddy Atlas and Kenny Weldon. You could even ask the Mayweather brothers-coaches. All the trainers, that TSS Press asked, has bones to pick.

Robert Curtis:  A better fighter than Cotto is needed to prove Manny Pacquiao "a small man". Cotto has much to prove and will show up to play rough. But the difference between Pacman fighting fast and fair and Margarito plugging with loaded gloves is like the difference between a lightning bolt and a lightning bug. Manny is a natural born world-shaker and will win.

#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto 7":  Look at all the hype this fight is creating. This fight is huge! I can't stand the wait. Dundee said exactly the same thing when Pac faced Oscar and Hatton. He said Oscar had the size, experience, better skills to frustrate Pac and will be the difference. He said Hatton will use his aggressive style and power to win against Pac. This time with Cotto he said "Cotto is a pressure fighter and he's going to be on Pacquiao from the get go. He's got a great left hook, he's a good body puncher and he's very aggressive. I see a very tough distance fight. I totally disagree with that. This will not I repeat NOT go the distance. The only way this will go the distance is if Cotto decides to run aroung the ring all night and that's not Cotto. Many of these trainers always use the size as being a factor when fighting Pac. I thought it was the amount of skills a fighter presents to the table that determines the outcome of a fight. I don't know...but...No bets can be made against Pac at my work this time around.

Miyagi "sensei":  It's the moment of truth, it's all on the line, MGM Grand is the place, Nov. 14 is the time... My student Daniel san is a better fighter than Manny or Miguel or anyone of these so called expert trainer's fighters.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 11:37:33 PM
Smoke:  We all win! Both fighters will put on a terrific show dazzling all with fearless, unrelenting combat. Can't wait! I think that Manny will prevail.

jun nicolas:  it seems the world is betting on cotto, but they dont know how pacquiao got this big, is not being scared of any fighter in front of him. morales beat him after he was drained of blood the night before the fight, thats why he lost. he only lost to a thai because he coulod not make weight and was dehydrated on fight day. the only guy to whip him was also a filipino when manny was as thin as a reed. but lose fairly to another fighter after that it has never happened. thats why i dont see how cotto could have a chance to exchange with him, he is much slower than de la hoya. mosley was fast but could not sustain his speed for the duration of their fight, but you could call their fight either way. mosley lost but not in a convincing fashion. there is no way cotto can keep up with manny, bet yer ass he wont.

The Saint:  These were honest assessments made by Dundee, Richardson, etc... Everyone's entitled to their opinion but they all seem to be hung up on Pacquiao's size. They still view him as a little guy, but just as one of them said, it's like calling Tyson a little guy. Pacquiao can hurt Cotto, that's not in question. The question is how much improvement will we see in Cotto's defense to prevent Pacquiao from connecting with clean shots all night long. One of my worries is Cotto's stiff left jab. If he was able to drop Clottey with it, he can do worse things to Pacquiao with that same jab. I don't think I've heard Roach address Cotto's jab, just his left hook, body punching and dirty tactics. The jab will be Cotto's key to containing Pacquiao.
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 06:32:14 AM
Reno@The Saint:  That's what I've been saying the key to victory for Cotto is his jab, which is like a cross because he's a lefty that fights out of the traditional stance. A strong stiff jab nullifies speed all the time and I think Cotto will implement that jab and throw hooks off of the jab to break Pac-man down until Roach throws in the towel. I got Cotto by 11th round TKO,
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 01:44:41 PM
joric :  the cotto jab is already addressed with pacquiao jab and hook. when cotto throws his jab, pacquiao will move to his right and crack cotto with a right hook to the body and/or head. cotto is in deep trouble no matter how many stupid theories are trying to get him out of it. pacquiao will beat and counter cotto's left jab with a right jab follow by a two, three and four. cotto will be discouraged after the first round and will fight to last, but will get knocking out in less than five round.

oskar:  Cotto's only chance to win against Manny would be if Cotto can hurt Manny and k.o. him but I don’t see it happening now. Roach is preparing Manny for a fight at welter long time ago I guess since the undefeated fight between Floyd jr and Hatton. Roach's real target is Floyd jr, Cotto is just an added bonus. Manny's past and present sparring partners are composed of a lightweight with a decent defense (Urbano), a jr lightwelter with speed (Amir), a natural welterweight (Rashad) and a jr middleweight with height and long reach (Shawn) with all this fighters combined abilities Roach might be molding Manny for Floyd jr since then so at welterweight Manny would be effective no doubt. Manny is still improving so watching past tapes of him would be useless and counting out what would he improve next would be ignorant. I wouldn't be surprised if Manny would weigh more than 147 now on fight night with team Pac experience at 147 during the Dream match they already might smooth things out on Manny's weight at that division by letting him eat 5 times a day. Team Pac will try to add Manny's fighting weight adding power without losing speed so that they wouldn’t be at a disadvantage when Cotto rehydrates himself. Pac by a mid round stoppage

Boxing Fan:  This will be a very interesting and brutal fight. Both are great fighters. Regarding the fight's facts: Manny showed the world that he is for real one of the greatest. Coming from 112 up to 147 (145 in this fight) and in the way he is doing is impressive. Very fast and great heart. Cotto in the other hand is a warrior and a great puncher. If Cotto pressure the fight since the first round and can neutralized Manny’s speed (which I believe he can) he will win by late KO. I believe that Cotto’s boxing skills can stop Mannys speed. The way that Cotto beated Judah and Mosley tells that he have the tools to outbox Manny. But, if Manny can impose his speed, he can win by decision. I don't see Cotto being KO by Manny. The advantages for Cotto are the power, boxing skills (by the way... that are very underestimated) and he is a natural 147. For Manny, the speed, and the corner. My prediction (cross my fingers...) Cotto by late KO....

Tomasio:  Some of these trainers don't know or forgot that Joe Santiago(Cotto's new head trainer) has been a part of Cotto's camp for the past 7 years, so Cotto & Santiago know each other very well & there won't be any misunderstandings between Cotto & Santiago.. Plus like many of these trainers said, at the end is just Cotto & Pacquiao(& of course the ref) in the ring..I see it the same way Ronnie Shields sees it, Cotto will stop Pacquiao late in the fight(TKO 10)

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide.
