Is Fedor MMA's Best Fighter; Brett Rogers Got Next

By David A. Avila

You don’t know much about mixed martial arts?

Saturday is your big chance to see the best in the business when Fedor Emelianenko of Russia accepts the challenge of America’s undefeated Brett Rogers on Saturday night.

You won’t have to pay a nickel to watch it on CBS at 9 p.m. Or you can buy a ticket and see it at the Sears Centre in Chicago.

Emelianenko (30-1) fights America’s big hard-hitting Rogers (10-0) on a Strikeforce fight card. Another great fight pits Jake Shields against Jason “Mayhem” Miller in a middleweight clash.

First, let’s look at Fedor.

The soft-looking Russian is anything but soft when he enters the ring or cage. With his knowledge of Sambo, a Russian commando style of fighting, and his uncanny combination of strength and speed, he’s blitzed through American competition throughout his career.

Some people even call him inhuman.

“I’m a human being,” said Emelianenko during a telephone press conference on Monday.

Not to his former opponents.

“He’s not human,” said Tim Sylvia the former UFC heavyweight champion who was overwhelmed by the Russian expert a few years back in Anaheim.

When Andrei Arlovski met Emelianenko last year he seemed to be doing pretty good under the guidance of boxing trainer Freddie Roach. Then that former UFC heavyweight champion attempted a kick and was caught and brutalized in seconds.

Several months ago that same Arlovski met Rogers in a televised match and was knocked cold by the American who fights out of Minnesota. Emelianenko was in the crowd that night and got a first row glimpse of the quick ending.

“I watched the fight and I know Brett is a very strong and serious opponent, but I try not to think about that,” said Emelianenko. “I simply train the way I normally do.”

Rogers may not have the MMA experience that Emelianenko possesses but he has one-punch knockout power and that’s one key weapon for someone facing the best MMA fighter in the world.

“My striking techniques doesn’t depend on where the fight takes place whether in the ring or in the cage,” said Rogers. “This is definitely a challenge for me and I’m prepared for it. Coming from nothing and being something. That’s where I get my confidence. This is me, this is my life.”

This is also Emelianenko’s life and he’s the best. Will this be the day he loses or will it be just another notch on his belt?

The last time I saw the Russian fighter doing his thing he displayed a combination with speed and power I hadn’t seen since the days of a young Mike Tyson. Yes, this guy is that fast and powerful.

Don’t miss this fight. It’s free too. You can’t beat that.

Shields vs. Miller

The semi-main event features Northern California’s Shields (23-4-1) going against Temecula’s Miller (22-6). It’s another interesting match.

Shields is a Brazilian jujitsu expert who despite going in with a size disadvantage is bound to be dangerous. Miller is a crackpot MMA fighter with a goofy sense of humor but a serious go-for-broke style that surprises those who take him lightly. He’s always beating fighters that he’s not supposed to beat. And finally, he gets a crack at a world title.

“It is such an honor to be fighting Jake Shields for the title,” said Miller who is no shrinking violet. “It’s awesome that Fedor is on the under card.”

Shields feels the same.

“I’m very excited to be part of this card, he is a great opponent. It will be a great fight for the fans. It’s great exposure,” said Shields, who is the former Elite XC welterweight champion. “I think Strikeforce is the right people to bring MMA to the people.”

Both Miller and Shields are considered among the top MMA fighters below 200 pounds and because they don’t fight for UFC, they’re not getting recognition. But on Saturday that could all change.

“It’s real important to us that this fight is really successful,” said Shields.

Most regular MMA fans are unaware of any fights outside of UFC. So this is a huge opportunity for a fight card not under the big dog to finally attract a mainstream audience.

Yes, MMA is not just UFC.

Most people don’t realize that the world of MMA is like a traveling circus. There are many circuses in the world but most only know Ringling Bros. It’s the same in MMA with most of the world only knowledgeable of UFC, but not others like Strikeforce/M-1 Global, and smaller companies like King of the Cage.

Isaiah:  I've seen Strikeforce before. It's even worse then the UFC. So, CBS could pay for this, but can't pay for a boxing card. Talk about anti-boxing. I'm beginning to think this is some sort of huge conspiracy with the T.V. networks and media. I mean, Manny Pacquiao is on the cover of Time Magazine. Floyd Mayweather is in a computer commercial. James Toney face is posted up at all the Sizzler's U.S. nationwide with a do not serve quote underneath. Ali will forever be known worldwide along with Mike Tyson. Boxing still has the biggest PPV sells by a landslide, etc. Are they afraid that if they give any kind of decent exsposure back to boxing that it will just completly destroy the UFC or what? What's the deal? What? Is that fatboy up top one of the best they have? Please!

doomrider7:  @Isaiah Wasn't Geroge Foreman a bit chunky when he regained the Wolrd Title at 50 years old? As for CBS doing MMA and not Boxing it's because none the big name boxers are willing to participate in this because they care more about the money than the sport(Mayweather actually went on record saying this). And besides MMA is more interesting and entertaining, don't believe me wwatch Mayweathers last fight with Marquez and if you really thought that was entertaining, then thats just sad.

AFN:  'Do Not Serve'? That's too funny. I want that poster. Brilliant. I'll TIVO Fedor and watch Dawson. EL TOONOY

ultimoshogun:  I'm looking forward to this fight and as a Fedor fan I'm a lil worried. Rogers is one of those guys who's been flying under the radar collecting impressive wins. I believe Fedor will find a way to win but he's gonna know he was in a fight when its over. Another fighter to watch on the card is Gegard Mousasi...like Fedor he is a complete and exciting fighter to watch.

Jason:  I'm not a big MMA guy, but there's something about these Eastern Bloc guys and the way they handle themselves that's truly admirable. They respect their opponent, don't talk nonsense, respect the sport, and are dignified. Then they go in the ring and brutalize their opponent matter of factly. They treat it as a sport. I listen to the David Haye's, the Ricardo Mayorga's, and the Floyd Mayweather's of the world and want to puke. Fedor is all business. Good stuff.

next in line:  Who cares!! Bring on Pacquaio vs Cotto. @ doomraider. .... Us boxing fans all know that mayweather fight was a dud. Wats sad is how u think boxing people say that was a great fight. When boxing puts on it's best matchups, it's hard to beat.

the Roast:  @AFN, I'm with you brother. I'll be watching the HBO card and catch this Fedor dude a little later. I've never seen him fight but if he's so good I need to take a look. Go Valuev!

SB:  Read the article fools. Arlovski, trained by Freddie Roach was knocked out cold. Boxing is dead. Thats why this site post MMA news. Evolution is inevitable so adapt or die

Frank Z:  Misterlee where are you?!?!1 we gotta talk about this fight bro.
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 10:53:43 PM
the Roast:  What did You think, Frank Z? I thought Rogers had a chance when he landed that stiff jab and busted up Fedor's nose, but it was a fleeting chance.
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 11:01:26 PM
Frank Z@ the Roast:  i loved the fight. i thought rogers accounted himself well, i did think he gained fedor's respect when he snuck in that jab. he was more patient than i expected him to be... and he was able to get out of fedor's submission attempts. i was impressed by rogers overall man.... he still has a chance to beat anyone cause of how big an dpowerful he is, though he's still raw from what i saw. overall i'm really happy that fedor's shown some of the mainstream what he can do. what'd you think?
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 11:28:06 PM
the Roast:  @Frank Z, I was also impressed with Rogers strength. He did not let his right hand go. He will have to ask himself why. Maybe too much respect? That was the first time I have seen Fedor. He was cool and calm despite all that blood. A rematch down the road would be fun. Good fight.

The Saint:  Although Rogers didn't fight like a chump, and he certainly wasn't, the fight wasn't all that competitive if you took away Fedor's bloodied face that resulted from the first left jab that Rogers landed on the bridge of Fedor's nose. Fedor is the real deal, he is without a doubt the greatest MMA fighter who ever lived. He has beaten all types of opponents and has dealt with different styles, from ferocious strikers like Rogers to world class grapplers like Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera. He is always calm and cool, it's funny that Bret Rogers cited Fedor's calmness as one of the reasons he lost the mental warfare. He thought that Fedor was playing "mind games" when in reality, that's how Fedor always fights. He is the ONLY MMA fighter who has demonstrated real consistency in a sport where the top fighters lose on a regular basis.

The Saint:  I'd like to add also that MMA is doing a wonderful thing for itself by airing these great fight cards on free TV. I personally felt that it was a great presentation and actually a little more professional than the UFC's extreme sports, "rad dude" approach that's going after the 14 to 25 year old demographic. It's great to have boxing legend Jimmy Lennon doing the announcing. It' too bad that we don't see boxing matches on national TV anymore.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
