Can Johnson do more than he did last time, or will Father Time finally put the hammer down on on the Jamaican?

Glen Johnson Has To Make It Ugly This Time

By Frank Lotierzo

This Saturday night former light heavyweight title holder Glen Johnson 49-12-2 (33) will fight a rematch against IBF champ Chad Dawson 28-0 (17) in Hartford, Connecticut. Johnson lost their first fight via a 12-round unanimous decision by the score of 116-112 on all three judges cards. Johnson vigorously protested the decision afterward and to this day claims the fight was stolen from him. Saying he was robbed is a little bit of a stretch but the 116-112 scoring (8-4 in rounds) doesn't give an accurate depiction of the fight.

The fight was extremely close and could've gone to either fighter by a point. And it can't be overlooked that with Dawson being the younger fighter who is viewed as one of boxing's potential future stars, fighters in his situation are always going to get the benefit of the doubt in the close rounds fighting a fighter like Johnson who was 39 at the time and was never viewed as a star in professional boxing. Nobody is saying that's fair nor is it right, but that's the way it goes and Johnson knows this as well as any fighter in boxing.

For Glen Johnson, beating Chad Dawson this time out will not be any easy task. Since their first fight Dawson has grown some and filled out a little more physically. On top of that he's fought twenty four rounds with Antonio Tarver that's surely matured him as a fighter and boosted his confidence. On the flip side Johnson smartly stayed active by fighting two fringe contenders and kept himself in-shape like he has throughout his career.

The problem Johnson faces is he's forty years old and at this stage of his career can't change his style. Dawson knows exactly what Johnson's going to do; that is, bring the fight to him and try to overwhelm Dawson physically while looking for the big punch in the hopes of turning the fight. This strategy served him well during the first fight and almost got the job done. When they met the last time Johnson even had Dawson shook a couple times during the fight but couldn't finish him.

If you're Glen Johnson you have to face reality and accept that what almost got it done in the first fight needs to be modified for this one. In this fight Johnson has to throw punches at every part of Dawson's exposed body and torso. If that means hitting him on his shoulders, forearms, wrist or on his hip bones, he has to do it. The uglier Johnson makes the fight the better his chances are that he can unravel Dawson. And if he unravels Dawson that can turn out to be just what Johnson needs to draw Chad out and force him to fight and trade with him. And by doing that Dawson will have abandoned his legs making it easier for Johnson to stay on top of him and fight him on the inside, thus further neutralizing Dawson's jab and ability to box.

There's no doubt in my mind that the Dawson we'll see this weekend will be a better fighter than the one we saw a year and a half ago. However, since the decision went against Johnson in their first fight, Glen has excoriated Dawson through the media and has publicly denounced Chad's performance and the judges' scoring of the fight. And lately Dawson has remarked that he's tired of hearing Johnson cry about how he was robbed in the last fight.

Then in the next breath he says he needs to use his skills more consistently and not allow himself to get into a slug-fest with the hard-hitting Johnson.

“We want to erase any memories of the first fight and put on a good show,” Dawson said. “The first fight I got caught up in a slug-fest late. I need to use my legs and my skills more this time. I’m not a fighter that goes for the knockout. I just have to showcase my talent. I plan on winning convincingly.”

Winning convincingly says Dawson? Maybe that's exactly the mindset that Johnson needs Dawson to carry into the ring on November 7th. Perhaps Dawson will be more intent on erasing the stigma of the last fight that he'll plant his feet and trade one time too many or take a few unnecessary risks in trying to separate himself from Johnson this time.

That said, the only way Chad Dawson will fight that way is if Glen Johnson forces him to and leaves him no choice.

The mindset that Glen Johnson needs carry into the ring with him for this fight is, maintain the  "Smokin" Joe Frazier he brought for the first fight, but also incorporate a little Fritzie Zivic and Harry Greb with it. In other words fight and do whatever it takes to get Dawson out of his boxers' mindset and make him look to the referee to bail him out due to Johnson's rough-house tactics.

Then maybe Dawson will come undone and Johnson can take advantage of that and seize the fight. Maybe...

brownsugar:  I thought Johnson was doing his best to make the 1st fight ugly

brownsugar:  Personally I'd like to see Travoris Cloud get some more exposure,.. the big names won't fight him because they say he has no name recognition,.. but Dawson vs Cloud would be more interesting to me than Johnson vs Dawson...or Johnson vs Cloud,..

AFN:  I love the Road Warrior, always have, always will. Hey I'm an adopted island boy, I love all Jamaican fighters (we haven't got but one from Cayman and he's mid thirties now). I thought he just made it last time out, and gave Dawson the roughest ride since Adamek. But Bad Chad has moved forward a huge distance since then, and Glenn has just gotten older. I see Chad boxing well for 12 rounds this time, avoiding those 'ugly' toe to toe exchanges that happened last time. He won't stop Glenn, but the decision should be clear this time. Dawson by an honest UD. Though you wouldn't hold it against me for opening a Red Stripe or two if the Road Warrior can pull one last bit of island magic out of the bag. JAH TOONOY

DMAN:  The Road Warrior still has youth in him. I see Dawson attempting to box but we will same the same fight on a different night. This time around Johnson will close the show. Many boxers are fighting at an older age now. The old saying of "you can run but you can't hide" come to mind. Dawson will run but Johnson will pull him into a dog fight. Chad Dawson also has more miles on his body and legs believe it or not. Youth can carry you thru but when miles start to be put on the body, a boxer does not always hold up as well. We have seen the best of Dawson. He is not getting any better. He beat Tarver and in the second fight an aging Tarver gave a good fight to Dawson. My vote is the Road Warrior! Consistent achiever since about 2005. He has been in his prime ever since as a late bloomer!

brownsugar:  it looks like the excitement and interest for the Cotto/Pac bout has stolen the interest from a major light Heavy fight this week end...(at least it's not PPV),.. this will be a real interesting fight,.. precious few 40year olds have proven they can still "bring it" like Johnson,... but Dawson should have the advantage in the "unused potential" catagory,... AFN,.. the Cayman Islands sounds like the place to be this time of year....pc....

the Roast:  I am looking forward to this fight for sure. I gotta agree with Andy once again. Dawson is still getting better and Glen is getting up there. I pick Dawson by UD but I'll be rooting for Johnson to tag that chin. He will need a late round KO to win this.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 08:58:53 PM
Porkupine:  Johnson KO11...Dawson doesnt want this fight and thinks he can win by showing up.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 10:18:08 PM
kountedout:  dawson cant go a whole fight without getting hurt. its going to be a tough fight. i would love to see johnson pull it out. he is a true warrior

MisterLee:  I hope johnson cuts off the ring this time as opposed to following him. We know Johnson is not the most heavy handed pressure fighter, collazo and winky to certain extent share that quality, and b/c of that they're being constantly shifted in gift decisions to pretty boy cotton feet shoe shiners who dance and get points for hitting gloves all night. I doubt it will result in KO, but i hope a knockdown or some staggering happens, and johnsons beats dawson andrade-bute style. Holler!

brownsugar:  Dawson came in at 175,.. but he looks bigger than he did in their first fight,.. if looks alone could win fights Then Dawson has already won,... Johnson came in a little lighter,.. 173.5,.. Dawson has been saying he wants to enter the supersix tourney,.. but I don't see how when he looks like he's coming down from a natural 190lbs,.. Johnson can be dangerous no matter what he looks like,.. no need for an Adonis build for the tenacious boxer,.. but I have a feeling Dawson will make Glen look old tommorrow night...Dawson by TKO late...
Friday Nov 6, 2009 11:38:10 PM
the Roast:  What about the Angulo fight? Does this Yorgey dude have a chance? Looking like a nice doubleheader to me. Brownsugar, you know as well as I do that this is Johnson's last shot. He aint getting knocked out by Dawson's saftey first a$$.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 11:50:16 PM
MisterLEe:  B-sug, man, 3 weeks in a row, I pick: Johnson, Pacquiao, and Ward... can either of us be serving crow three weeks in a row? Many members of the TSSU will have stomach indigestion, for certain! :)
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 12:00:33 AM
the Roast:  Cave-zilla!! I got Dawson,(rooting for Glen) Pacman, and home court Ward. A very nice three weeks indeed. Now if only Radam would return everything would be as it should in the U.
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 12:12:35 AM
MisterLee @ the Roast:  Radam is peaking his head in every so often, i think he commented on the southpaw article with dundee, i think he's chill'n with the pac posse and busy doing his thang and eat chicken embryos and getting drunk on coconut wine! while we are chugging away and writing away. Also wondering, is real talk still eating oodles with hot sauce? I been addicted to korean noodles with vietnamese rooster hot sauce (the kind used on pho noodles). Yum yum!
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 12:32:51 AM
Isaiah:  Dawson,Cotto, and Kessler for the wins. I don't think any Pepto Bismol will be needed on my part. C-mon Radam. May not always agree with you, but better then being a little less interesting in here. Give me a challenge.
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 01:17:31 AM
Kool-Aid:  Will be another great fight...but the result will be the same. Dawson UD over Johnson.
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 06:53:39 AM
DaveB:  Dawson is two years wiser in boxing and Johnson is two years older. (Not an original quote; Joe Louis used it against Max Schmeling.) But I think that quote is true. I think Johnson brings it hard once again, but I think Dawson prevails in a UD. If Johnson pulls it out I wouldn't be unhappy although I'm not sure if it would be good for boxing overall, it would be good for right now.

bill m.:  johnson with a ko late, big upset !
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 03:40:36 PM
Smoke:  Dawson will dominate, although I would like to see Johnson crack him a time or two forcing Dawson to slug it out a few rounds. It will definitely be better than the Valuev/Haye snooze-fest.
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 06:49:18 PM
brownsugar:  Mister Lee your hitting yer stride... keep it up...if Ward wins,.. it'll be the icing on the cake... Dawsons fight wasn't dramatic,.. it was like a walk in the park,.. a calm cerebral route,..now bring on Tavaris Hopkins and the winner of Diacanou Pascal... Dawson is ready,.....
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 10:22:18 PM
Fe'Roz:  Not to worry Gentlemen. Glen was as ugly as Chad was pretty. The result for Boxing: More empty seats.
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 11:53:06 PM
the Roast:  At least I got one out of two right today. Dull win for Dawson. He fought like a giant size Floyd. Never went all in for the KO. I guess that's not his style. Angulo looked like a beast. He really F' ed up Yorgey's day!
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 11:54:08 PM
Fe'Roz (continued):  And more attention and eyeballs on the place where the best meet the best. At the lower weights. What Chad and Glen failed to do in attention and sales, Manny and Miguel should compensate well.
Saturday Nov 7, 2009 11:57:00 PM
brownsugar:  you mo'fos are off tjhe chain,..that's why I'm proud to call TSS my home lol....
Sunday Nov 8, 2009 02:29:12 AM
MisterLee:  Can't wait til next week! Eating crow like woah!

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
