Small Island, Big Stars

Small Island, BIG TALENT . . .

MIGUEL COTTO'S PUERTO RICAN ROOTS YIELD HIGH RESULTS FOR PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES AND CELEBRITIES

LAS VEGAS (November 5, 2009) - Jennifer Lopez ...Carlos Beltran ... Roberto Clemente. . .it takes longer to escape a New York City traffic jam than to drive the length of Puerto Rico, which measures only 100 miles by 35 miles. . . Benicio Del Toro... Reggie Jackson...Chi Chi Rodriguez. . .the population of Puerto Rico is about 3.9-million. That means the entire Commonwealth has fewer residents than at least a dozen metropolitan areas in the USA. . .Marc Antony... Carmelo Anthony ... Freddie Prinze Sr. . .yet the number of sports and entertainment stars and superstars produced by this island is overwhelming.

Miguel Cotto, who takes on Manny Pacquiao on Saturday, November 14 live on HBO Pay-Per-View®, is today's brightest boxing star from Puerto Rico, which has produced more champions and legends per square mile than any place in the world.

The island people's lives have been seeped in the love of the game and the thrill of a fight, as Puerto Rico has produced successful baseball and boxing superstars for decades.  As for boxing champions, the first of more than 50 world titlists was Sixto Escobar, who twice reigned as bantamweight champion in the mid-'30s.  In the '60s, lightweight and junior welterweight champion Carlos Ortiz was the first Puerto Rican to be recognized as a pound-for-pound great.

One decade later, three-division champion Wilfred Benitez established a reputation as the best defensive fighter of his era. Benitez won his first world title at age 17, still a record.  In the '70s and '80s, Wilfredo Gomez, who was another three-division titlist, flaunted a rare combination of power and boxing skills. Gomez made 17 successful defenses of the junior featherweight title and knocked out hall of famers Lupe Pintor and Carlos Zarate.

Immediately preceding Cotto was wildly popular Felix "Tito" Trinidad, who won titles at welterweight, junior middleweight, and middleweight. Trinidad reigned as a champion from 1993 to 2001, and defeated Fernando Vargas, Pernell Whitaker, and Oscar De La Hoya.

Other notable Puerto Rican champions: John Ruiz, who was the first Hispanic to win a portion of the world heavyweight title; Carlos DeLeon, who won the WBC cruiserweight crown four times; charismatic junior lightweight and lightweight champion Hector Camacho; power punching two-division champion Edwin Rosario; Esteban DeJesus, who defeated Roberto Duran; light heavyweight champion Jose Torres; and reigning light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon, who is unbeaten in 34 career bouts.

Now it's Cotto's time to perform on the biggest stage of his career and should he be victorious, he will find his place atop the 2009 leader board of great athletes and stars emanating from this small but prideful island.

Fe'Roz:  After next Saturday, we will have the answer to whose star shines brighter, Manny or Miquel. We'll then know who to count among the stars.....and which, if either one, might be seeing stars.

Nanalo:  Manny is like the star known as the sun. He will shine the brightest and hottest and will conduct a scorched-earth policy on the falling star Miguel Cotto.

PaulyPR:  This will be another history making night for Puerto Rico. Cotto will prove what Boricuas can do in the ring and represent for Latino's everywhere. This one is for us and Mexico,

Freddie Roach is in Cotto's head :  Your boy Cotto can't stop commenting about what Coach Roach has to say. By the time the fight gets here, he'll be thinking too much and lose his focus in the ring. I don't care how big and strong all you Puerto Ricans say Cotto is. Pacquiao will light your boy up all night. Believe that ! After November 14th, Cotto's turn for RETIREMENT.

kyzrsoze:  my respects to the Puerto Ricans, land of brave men and beautiful women. 60 world boxing champions and 7 world beauty queens, that is truly amazing for such a small commonwealth nation. but as for cotto, mama mia purisima santisima, pobrecito miguelito, you had to fight the pacman, aayyyayyyaaayy!!!!!

shane:  Hey! Don't call Cotto the underdog here. He is now the OVERDOG with just a week remaining, he still weighs 159 pounds. I hope the OVERDOG's trainer and conditioning coach won't give us a dried overdog to spoil a supposedly great fight. We'll sue the trainer if cotto comes drained.

Larsky G.:  Let us wait the result on Non.14 watch the fight Manny vs Cotto we prove it, who will be the winner. Although I am a Filipino, I don't care any prediction from others people. The real result on Nov. 14 is the answer of all floating prediction that was published.

Anony:  AND........... Rocky Martínez and Daniel Santos and I'm sure there are others. We really really take big pride supporting the sport of boxing. It is an inevitable part of our culture and it is passed on to our kids and so on. I believe it is the goal to be the best, the pride of a small nation who loves to be the spotlight everytime a Jennifer López or a Ricky Martin or a Ms. Universe (we have 5), or one those NASA guys step in and say "I'm Boricua". Recently we had a Boricua in space (Joseph Acabá) and Sonia Sotomayor was appointed to the Supreme court of the USA. What can I say guys?... this island is 100x35 and it may not be heaven but we definitely feel proud... and the best thing is... once you know a Boricua, you know we're special people. Oh.. I forgot to mention we take pride on donputo69 as well... he is the P4P legend of TSS.... hehehehe NOW, coming november 14 we have another chance to make history and I'm sure (and you can tell) we are really really really well represented in Miguel "El Angel" Cotto. God bless him and God bless Manny as well.

mang godo:  it is really amazing to have those talents for a small island puerto rico. phiippines is a bigger islands with too much competition and only the very best emerged like pacquiao. but both islands have similarities.... both are commonwealth of the US though philippines is not anymore and many more.\ pacquiao and cotto is a big fight like carlos ortiz vs flash elorde then. this is a revenge for pilipinos against puerto rico.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 08:14:02 AM
american boy:  No need to tell on this column that Puerto Rico produced a lot of celebrities and talents. Obviously, because you are a commonwealth of U.S.A. Don't be an ignorant, people from other countries have more deserving talents and stars than yours. Do you think without the link with the U.S. your people will be there? Oh come on... wake up!
Friday Nov 6, 2009 08:28:40 AM
nixter:  filipino filipino filipino. Manny Pacquiao, Apl d ap(Black Eyed Peas), Lea Salonga(Miss Saigon), Arnel Pineda(Journey), Efren THE Magician Reyes(Hall of Famer Billiard), Paeng Nepomuceno(4 time World Champ, Bowling)......
Friday Nov 6, 2009 09:07:41 AM
zdrx:  puerto rico is so blessed with beauty queens, boxing champs and musical talents, that its difficult to enumerate all or one by one. so its no wonder you missed some that is popular to us filipinos: miss universe dayanara torres happily lived and shared her life with us here in the philippines for many years. we also love the songs of trini lopez, jose feliciano, menudo and ricky martin etc. both our countries almost have identical history. spanish colonies that fell into american administration after the spanish american war. but come fight night we will root for pacman to win.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 09:38:39 AM
Anony @ American Boy:  I WONDER IN WHICH STATE OF THE USA YOU LIVE AND HOW MANY TOP TALENT FIGURES HAS COME OUT FROM THERE??? I mean, if we are "just a commonwealth graced by the US government", I'm sure your state, being a FULL AFFILIATED STATE, has produce more boxers, artists, scientists, etc, than ours, RIGHT?????? NO?? Wow... don't feel bad just yet.... feel bad if I ask you how big is your state compared to Puerto Rico...? MANY TIMES BIGGER???? Wow... then I guess you guys don't take advantage of "such a blessing" as being a full state... so why don't you legislate to move the money where the most talent is produced bimbo?? SEND IT HERE. Don't hate on us BRO. Use that energy to improve yourself. We work hard on it, This is not a "gift". We work VERY HARD.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 10:02:53 AM
AstigTTko:  You need to realize the Philippines was part of the commonwealth of America, until after the 2nd WW they decided to give the country it's independence. We also have a lot of Beauty Queens and world famous artist. But who cares? It's all about the fight next Saturday and it's going to be between two great warriors. Let's all kickback and enjoy it! Peace!
Friday Nov 6, 2009 10:44:05 AM
conor:  If the Philippine Islands is as near as Puerto Rico from the United States it will produce much more and greater talents ,,, Philippines is a nation full of talented people. We are even far from NYC but Leah Salongga Conquered NYC. We are far but we produce such talents like Leah Salonga (Voice quality wise Leah is better than J lo), Manny Pacquiao, Charice Pempengko, Apl d Ap, Efren Reyes (Greatest Pool Player Ever Lived), Paeng Nepomucno (Greates Bowler ever lived) and much much more...
Friday Nov 6, 2009 12:20:15 PM
doug:  i love puerto rico, man! i love the puerto rican rums, man! i love dayanara torres, man!
Friday Nov 6, 2009 12:31:32 PM
ernie tabarez:  manny puerto rican are well known in USA today that is because of the island proximity to the america. They can easily got exposure and become famous. But there are many intelligent and bright people in the philippnes and they are only discovered once they are set-foot in american soil. One example of that is Manny Pacquiao, the very best of the Philippine Island in boxing. On november 14, another event/history in boxing will be happenning. That is a fact. It will be Cotto's power and size advantages versus Pacquiao's power and speed combinations. Let us see and watch.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 12:33:46 PM
why call him star:  how could on earth cotto is a star? he is fighting a guy starts at 106 yet he is underdog not favor to win by majority. Come on.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 01:38:55 PM
Anony @ why call him a star:  COTTO IS THE ONLY WELTERWEIGHT WHO HAS FOUGHT THE OTHER TOP WELTERWEIGHTS. Look at the resume. The only ones he needs to fight are Paul Williams and Berto. Skip Mayweather because he will never be seen as a true fighter. I guess you need to watch some of his fights before making those questions.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 08:01:59 PM
dp69 @Anony:  Ty anony....we boricuas take boxing very seriously....im already sick and tired of these fake boxing fans acusing my boy cotto....come Nov.14 i will be here bragging for like 2 days straight....BTW, I already got my tickets.....Ringside seats...and i only paid $400 dollars....thats why is good to know celebrities...hahahaha.....anyway....Cotto in 10.....holla back!!!

Suits, Stop Squabbling, And Posturing, AND MAKE FIGHTS!
"Floyd may very well be the most talented boxer but that he does not understand that what the fans, who ultimately pay the bills, watch fights for is entertainment. At the moment, he not only ignores that reality but frankly doesn't seem to care. Neither about our wishes and/or our passion for to see great fights. Thus, there is little Go ... and even less Show. I am vaguely interested in the Business of Boxing. Frankly, it is a mess on a good day and worse on it's worst. I prefer reading the Business pages where brilliant men and women develop skills and strategies to create incredible value and wealth (for themselves and others) in ways far more effectively and meaningfully than those who Rule ...some might say Ruin...this beautiful Sport." --FE'ROZ, speaking for a majority of fight fans
