Pacman Packs Them In On Media Day L.A.

By David A. Avila

With a bright colored bus outside the Wild Card Boxing gym painted with the pound for pound champion’s name it wasn’t a surprise to see several hundred people waiting in the parking lot.

Manny Pacquiao has become synonymous with “the big fight” that drives the sport of boxing and keeps the industry humming even in the worst of economic times.

Pacquiao’s media day is the last time journalists can see the Filipino super star before he fights Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs) for the WBO welterweight title on Saturday Nov. 14.

The big fight takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It’s also available on HBO pay-per-view.

Reporters arrived an hour before the expected time. It was a good move for those who did so.

Pacquiao arrived a few minutes after 1 p.m. and his arrival caused a stir among the press. He dived into a dressing room and changed into his sparring and workout attire, Then about a dozen reporters from various newspapers and a couple of respected web sites were shuffled into the 6 by 10 foot room.

The questions by reporters were not fired at the Filipino champion probably because he’s been through all these matches before that he was the size under dog.

“They said I would have problems with David Diaz and (Oscar) De La Hoya,” said Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) in his usual understated tone. “Cotto is a very good fighter.”

Once again Pacman will enter the ring against a champion who on paper should be the bigger and stronger fighter. Cotto has only one loss that came by knockout. Fans of the Puerto Rican still insist he was beaten by Antonio Margarito and loaded gloves. Though it was never proven. Most forget that an inspector looks at the wrappings of each fighter especially during a big fight. So be it.

It’s not Pacquiao’s problem and he lets you know that he doesn’t care about Cotto’s past, or his own future.

“I only care about Cotto,” said Pacquiao, whose trainer Freddie Roach has predicted a knockout victory for his protégé.

“It was on Monday when I finally saw the Manny I want to see,” said Roach, who added that Pacquiao worked the mitts for 17 straight rounds.

For those who aren’t familiar with the mitts, it’s often more strenouous than sparring because you can’t take a breather or back away from contact.

“He looks sharp and he’s in the shape I want him to be,” Roach said.

In the past, every time Pacman headed to the Philippines to train it’s resulted in a sub par performance. Sure he won but a 12-round unanimous decision against Oscar Larios who was knocked out by Israel Vazquez in less than three rounds. That is not what most expect from Pacquiao.

“I’m working hard so I can give a fight the fans want,” said Pacquiao.

The pocket-sized bomber has never given a dull fight in his entire pro career and with more than 90 million fans all over the world, he doesn’t expect to start next week.

“Cotto is a good boxer,” Pacquiao reiterated. “He likes to use pressure and he can box too.”

Pacquiao says his father, mother and sister will be arriving in Las Vegas to watch him fight. Though his mother had been to Las Vegas during his fight, she didn’t actually watch the fisticuffs.

“A lot of people look to me to feel good about themselves,” says Pacquiao explaining his popularity. “I’m very thankful.”

Fight fans all over the world are thankful for the fighter known as Pacman. They know if they tune in they’ll see a true prizefighter attempting to wrest a piece of history. But standing in the way is a welterweight Gibraltar named Cotto.

“I’m improving my skills everyday,” Pacquiao says.

Next week the world gets to see if it’s enough to beat Cotto.

“I’m very confident in him as of this week,” said Roach.

It’s hard to bet against Freddie.

in touch:  You are right. It's tough to bet against Roach. This could be a great fight or it could become another shockingly one sided fight for pac. I'm expecting the latter. And then more excuses will come out about Cotto. I don't see Cotto able to catch pac, the way pac is moving in sparring.

Isaiah:  Perhaps you can say Manny Pacquiao wins this fight, but win easily, he does not. Only a fool would underestimate Miguel Cotto. Prepare for the world to be shocked again. Cotto wins by 10 round TKO. Mayweather, Cotto's coming for you and what isn't supposed to happen will become true. Run, run while you can, until the public demands it man. I warn you all, Miguel Cotto is a beast and just may feel like shocking the world more then once before it's all said and done. At least when Manny and Miguel are old men and look back at their legacies, they will have nothing to be ashamed of. You have to respect these 2 warriors for life for sure.

tipaklong:  Go Manny!!!!!!!! The whole world will be watching this fight! Your fans and your people (that's me) will be praying for your victory. Hope you and cotto will show a very exciting match that can rival the best in boxing history!!! Once again, GO MANNY!!!

Leox:  manny pacquiao! go bet.

Edgar A de Dios:  If Cotto will not do a Mayweather by not going down to the agreed catchweight of 145 pounds, he will not have a chance of winning against Pacman. In short, for him to win he should only have to pay the penalty, this time at $1M for every excess pound above the catchweight. So, by cheating two pounds, coming in at 147, he must pay $2M, and have a chance of winning, ala Pretty boy Floyd. Without this strategy, he will never have a chance against Pacman..

GOAT:  If Pac wins, and that's a big IF, it's because he is a better fighter than Cotto. Trainers, including Roach are highly over rated. When a fighter is young and learning the game, it's important to have proper training and guidance, but when that fighter has as much experience as Cotto and Pac, then the main purpose of a trainer is strategy. Disciplined and experienced fighters don't need guidance and strategy during the fight. They just need someone to wipe their face off, give them water, and put some vasoline on their brows.

Thursday Nov 5, 2009 06:33:04 AM
Isey aygugo:  Manny wins this bout in easy fashion. Miguel is shot, slow and finished from too many hard fights especially Margarito.
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 06:51:23 AM
ethan:  pack it in for the spirit of sportmanship..go manny do!
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 07:13:06 AM
isidro:  Nevertheles,Pacquiao /Roach tandem equals a very exciting and full of competition from the start of the training up to the fighting ring match up.Not in a long shot that a diminutive man from the south east asia(Philippines)can pursue this kind of dream into reality without divine help thru team Pacquiao. For Manny and Cotto...may the great man wins the fight.

martial arts bobby:  So,Pacquiao's sister, mother and dad are coming.is Jinkee coming?
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 08:09:42 AM
paclander :  if paquiao lose he admits he lost no nore excuses....... but please ISIAH admit it too when it happeneds to cotto please no excuses...... cotto is a great fighter a beast as you believe it...... I one of paquiao's fan believes too that no beast fighter or a monster in the ring can withstand a fast and ferrosious puncher in the world of boxing ever known.... mark my word COTTO "the Beast" killed by a beast killer named PAQUIAO
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 08:11:36 AM
jpk:  I really believe and no doubt that manny will win via knock out in the first round. And every body that says Cotto will be the one.... yes, will be the one lying in BED. Go Pacman!!!
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 08:50:08 AM
atoy cena:  iam so sure pacman will win
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 09:03:50 AM
RIVERSIDE:  pacman has proven us wrong over and over,i got pacman winning, it's just hard to believe that pacman hits harder than mosley, margarito, clottey, torrez, i can't see him knocking out cotto, cottto is one of my favorite boxers, he is is fan favorite, crowd pleaser, i'm pulling for cotto, pacmans speed might be to much, but then he is not faster than judah or mosely,i'm hoping for a good fight
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 09:25:47 AM
james:  i saw a video from youtube while manny was doing his workout. he is really in great shape! then suddenly i heard buboy in the background saying" relax lang huwag mong ipakita lahat " i'm so excited to see both fighters banging each other in the ring!
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 09:26:50 AM
lapu-lapu:  Pacman is not just the pride of the Philippines but all the Asian countries and Pacific islanders. Nov. 14, 2009 will be remember in boxing history as the day Pacquiao got his 7th title in 7 weight division. It will be the first in the history of boxing. Mabuhay ka Pacquiao.
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 10:11:09 AM
LC:  The first 4 rounds will be DANGEROUS, I mean DANGEREOUS WATER for the PUERTO RICAN CHAMP. I had a vision when Cotto sparring speed vs Pacquaio sparring speed is no comparison...it's like NIGHT AND DAY. Cotto will not catch Pacquaio, and the punch Cotto get is the one he doesn't see will TKO him.
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 10:18:30 AM
oddsmaker:  This will be a fight of the year candidate , I just don't get the odds in Vegas got Pacman in an overwhelming odds against Cotto, you need to bet 240 on Pacman to win 100 as if they want everyone to place their bet on Cotto in which a 100 will make you 240
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 10:53:21 AM
atthebalance:  on the average erpson,s point of view, i dont see cotto land a a shot on manny, LC is absolutely right, night and day it is with a month in between..hehe.. not unless cotto goes for a underhook to the basement and make it look accidental, then and then,it would be equal i guess... i can already imagine the library of excuses taht pacman critics would result if manny goes victorious. Come on guys, even a true welterweight would think twice of going head to head with cotto. Thus, just accepting the challenge from a man who came a weight class up is already a feat.. try your PURTO RICAN CHAMP TO GO UP IN WEIGHT, he probaly would think twice... pacman by early convincing knockout, brace yourselves, this will be a quick explosive hell of a fight.. owwyeah...!!!

brownsugar:  it's rare to see a fighter that's supported by as much love a Pacman,.. even my own family members have cast Cotto aside for the shinier more Lovable Manny Pacman,.. . and they used to really love Cotto,.. how times have changed,. Manny's like the Al Capone of boxing,.. he rules over a huge entourage,.. dispensing justice and presiding over internal disputes,.. then every now and then,.. to show that he's still his own man(and not Roaches puppet),... he bolts away from camp for a day to do his own thing,.. gotta love him,.. in Contrast,.Cotto the dour family(and Company) man only has a few family members and the comical Fat man in his entourage,.. and speaks in serious tones about his love of family,... while training in virtual secrecy away from prying eyes,.. if Cotto's team has found a way to make weight without draining him,..Cotto will be a dangerous man on Nov 14./// I like both fighters,.. so no matter who wins I won't be dissappointed,.. my family is picking Pacman,.. and I lean slightly towards Pac about 51%(because of the catch weight),... but I'm hedging my bets because Cotto can not ever be counted out....a win by Cotto gives him a renewed presence with elevated respect in the boxing world,.. but if Pacman wins,.. it'll be bigger than Obama being elected president... he goes down on the ATG lists fo' sho'.....

AvilaFan:  First, let me say that the boxing journalist of this piece is outstanding, strong, fair and complete. He never wavers from the truth and hard facts. He's not an opportunist , weak minded or a follower of popular opinion. With that said. I like how he keyboard taps a space a space. In his own words, "Fans of the Puerto Rican (Cott0) insist that he was beaten by Antonio Margarito and loaded gloves. Though it was never proven...." And I doubt that proof will ever materialize. The "welterweight Gibraltar named Cotto" will be in for some more loaded gloves -- PacMan's crushing hand inside of them. Those hands feel like Mindanao granitoid rock. A Filipino type of rock that will pulverize the Rock of Gibraltar. Another fun, easy type of fight for PacMan. A monster kayo in round one to four. I'm taking a side bet that Manny is going to knock Miguel out. And Miguel is going to fall on to that red-worded energy drink loco on the canvas, as Ricky did. No need 4 a holla.
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 01:54:14 PM
DJ:  I think this is one of the most interesting fights. Small guy who is like the energizer bunny against big guy who fades late. My prediction if it ends early Cotto will win, if it goes late Pac gets a ref stoppage. Not sure if pac carries his punch but if he hits 10 times unanswered a la ODLH.
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 02:19:26 PM
kike24:  You guys that think this will be another easy fight for Manny are delusional. Miguel is no walk in the park. Even if Manny does win, he will know he was in the ring with a true warrior. .. ps.. anyone who has tickets to Mannys after fight concert.. lol.. Better get your money back now. he wont be making it.
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 06:02:57 PM
Fe'Roz @ Brownsugar:  Amen, Sugarman. So the family has removed Jermaine, set Miguel aside, and adopted Manny. Progressive bunch you've raised. The Obama reference is excellent. Question: If .... and it's a very big if....Manny does conquer Miguel AND has not taken a career changing beating....who does the family support if he takes on Floyd. Fresh Floyd or Super-Man/ny?
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 11:47:01 PM
alvaro:  This Pacquiao Cotto fight will be the best one! but shame on you all, boxing is like a basketball, you can say that the ball is round in basketball, in boxing the ring is square, so let us fair and square here, your opinions are all correct,,,,they are both good fighters! so lets just see and watch them entertaining us and watching the best boxing bout ever! GOODLUCK TO YOU BOTH!
Friday Nov 6, 2009 01:49:36 PM
brownsugar@Fe'Roz:  Yeah Fe'Roz,.. I have to give them the "you musta fo'got" speech when it comes to Cotto,... My wife says there's no need for Mayweather to fight Pacman because he's had a good run (partially because she loves Manny too and doesn't want to see him lose),.. .. my son says that Pacman is the only man who defeat Mayweather and Mayweather is the only guy who could defeat Manny,.. so he's split,.. but leans a little bit more towards Mayweather because of his ability to control space... and Pacmans vunerability to right hands... Personally I wouldn't care if Floyd took a loss,.. just to see how he would cope...

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
