The jury of F-Lo is still basically out on Ward. He's got ability, but we need to see a career-definer type fight to gauge his mettle, before we can accurately assess Ward in total.

Andre Ward: No Middle Ground

By Frank Lotierzo

Andre Ward is one polarizing guy. There are supporters who are absolutely convinced that he’s a shoo-in to win Showtime’s Super Six tournament. They point to his Olympic gold medal and his fairly trouble-free climb to the near top of the current super middleweight ladder. They assert that he’ll box circles around Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham, and Carl Froch, and that he’s a more developed fighter than his closest stylistic counterpart in the tournament, Andre Dirrell. It’s easy to see their point: Ward is very comfortable in the ring; he’s got fast hands, moves well, and, when the he shows up as if he's interested in the outcome of the fight, he can get off  explosively.

His detractors always bring up his intermittent tendency to push his punches, his trouble establishing proper distance, and his general complacency and lack of focus. In a sport where the requirements for being a top pro and a top amateur have grown increasingly dissimilar, he’s thought of by some as a good amateur in a pro’s game.

So people are either really high on Ward or totally dismissive of him.

There are a lot of interesting questions that will be answered after Andre takes on Mikkel Kessler late next month. Will Ward’s speed and movement befuddle his opponent all night? Will Kessler pursue Ward in a straight line, only to get picked apart? Does Ward have enough power to hurt Kessler or enough physical strength to hold him off and keep him a step behind? Because Kessler is strickly a headhunter, will he play right into Ward’s hands by trying to sharp-shoot with him?

Maybe more importantly, if Kessler, who is a very aggressive fighter, is able to reach him, we’ll find out what happens when it’s gut check time for Ward. He’s been down once before, in his ninth fight against Darnell Boone, and didn’t let the experience unravel him. But Boone was a 6-2-1 clubfighter with very little power. Kessler is a good finisher with a sharp instinct for spotting an opponent’s distress. And unlike a lot of Western European champions, he hasn’t been fed a steady diet of stiffs, been awarded gift decisions, or been the beneficiary of a flexible reading of the rules of boxing. No, Kessler has come by every win honestly; he’s a real fighter.

On paper Andre Ward comes out of this tournament very well. He’s the most technically well rounded of the contestants in it. Aside from the intense but supremely self-confident Abraham, no one else among the group controls pace nearly as successfully. One of the things I’m looking forward to discovering is whether Ward will force Abraham out of his own leisurely pace or whether over time he himself will be worn down by Abraham’s deliberate and constant pressure.  I think that if Ward is mentally tough enough, he’ll be able to give Abraham some difficulties.

There are still some things about Ward that bother me though. I admit to being troubled by his bad habit of looking at the canvas when he flicks out his jab. It’s a careless and potentially dangerous mistake to make. He’s not a good inside fighter yet either. That's not saying he becomes uneasy on the inside, since he often moves there voluntarily, but that he doesn’t know how to work once he’s there. His inclination is to grab and hold, then to throw quick and inefficient head punches. I haven’t seen him being muscled around in close, so I’m not sure why he doesn’t dig shots to the body while his hands are free. However, I don’t expect this issue to be a factor in the Kessler fight. Mikkel isn’t an inside fighter. And Andre benefits from using as much of the ring as he can anyway. Kessler’s footwork, though efficient, is rudimentary compared to Ward’s. The more Andre uses his legs, the better off he’ll be.

I’m willing to sign off on Abraham and Kessler as bona fide and tested at the top. I’m not won over by Dirrell at all, and think that Ward is clearly the further along of the two. In spite of hearing arguments to the contrary, it seems to me that Froch is a weak link, capable of being out-toughed and outpunched by Abraham and Kessler and outboxed and maybe even outgunned by Ward.

Ultimately, Andre Ward’s success in this tournament is going to come down to how well he has adjusted to the pros and how he will fare when he takes on guys who are championship or near-championship level fighters. I’m not blind to his natural ability, but sense a certain unformed quality in him. American Olympians have been horrible underachievers in recent years, largely because they’ve been too pampered and are too soft. I’ve still got some reservations about Ward’s capacity to dig down in tough fights. By the time the Super Six tournament has been completed, questions about those reservations will all be answered.

brownsugar:  the ability to take punches is inversely proportionate to how hard a fighter trains,... I've been rocked playing around with my 16 year old daughter as she caught me bare fisted across the chin,.. and I've been in the ring with brutes,.. who trained in prison for over five years and outweighed me by 30lbs who could put a dent in me anywhere,... conditioning,.. motivation and focus can make the difference between a fighter walking thru punches or landing hard on the canvas,... some fighters,.. like Calzaghe don't even fight their best untill they've tasted the canvas and their adrenaline starts flowing,.. Joe Louis was the same way,... and Ward is a supremely conditioned athlete,.. who peaks when he needs to,.. against Miranda,.. Ward was unaffected after getting caught hard by a few of Miranda's bombs,.. ...even stood right in front of him,.. Mark my word,.. Wards conditioning,.. defense and focus will be the telling factors toward the later rounds,.. (when Kessler tends to fade against well conditioned fighters),... to compound problems for Kessler,.. he's not even in the same shape that he was in when he fell apart against JC in the 2nd half of the fight,... Get Yer Crow Ready Mister Lee!!!!,..there needs to be plenty to go around.....

brownsugar:  I meant,......"couldn't put a dent in me anywhere"
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 04:12:43 PM
Frank Z@brownsugar:  absolutely conditioning is a huge factor, especially if they pay attention to their necks, strengthening and loosening, but its also a skill, relax and roll your chin when y ou get caught, and relax your eyes so you can see shots.

Wardfan:  Ward is going to beat Kessler so badly that kessler will need mental help. He was pretty well shot after Slappy Joe Cazaghe slapped him around. He couldn't handle SJC's speed. So that will put him in deeper trouble with Andre Ward's blinding speed. This cat has a speed demon in his SOG butt. That demon is going to appear and whup the skin off Kessler. Ward by stoppage around the ninth or tenth round, and Kessler to the hospital to get sewn up, then to the mental ward for having breakdowns and nightmares about a speed demon trapped in the body of SOG.
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 04:38:11 PM
deepwater:  Im getting that crow ready for you guys.I hope ward does it but i wouldnt bet it.
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 05:14:18 PM
Frank Z:  come on SOG, show the world that the best boxers are still stateside.... there i said it lol.

Warped Design:  I can't see any of the American's winning the Super Six. And "Ward Fan" is clearly deluded, if not deranged...
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 06:53:12 PM
brownsugar@FrankZ:  you said it all in a nutshell Frank,... I'm looking forward to this like Cotto vs Pac...
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 08:33:45 PM
brownsugar:  I think Flo Lo has Ward mixed up with Allan Green,... cause I haven't seen that kind of behavior from Ward before,. in fact Ward forces his opponents to fight every second of every round,.. I don't want to sound disrepectful,.. because this is a damn good article...(except for a few glaring errors) but has the author even seen this guy fight,.??? because also Ward landed some very effective punches against the banger Miranda on the inside too... had Miranda's head popping up like a jack-in-the-box!!!

MisterLee:  It seems there are no kessler fans, just ward anti-fans and skeptics. You guys are ridiculous, just b/c a boxer is bound for greatness and has been riding a wave SIMILAR to SRL or DLH, a olympic gold medalist who will have belts in multiple weight classes, you guys get really skeptical... the questions duplicate with every win and every step up he has.. his chin, his will, his tendency to "run and not fight" which all held up in the miranda fight (tho like you guys said not the "ultimate test").. his chin held up to quite a few miranda bombs, he got fouled and headbutted in round 1 with a bad cut and fought back, he got low blowed within the first 3 rounds... miranda is a solid contender and borderline journeyman, and ward answered those questions. Now in his 20th fight, which is the time his camp wanted his first title fight (honestly, you can look back at old ESPN articles in his 12th pro fight and they said they wanted their 20th fight to be a title fight) he's ready to take on the world, the time for development is done, time to rumble! You guys are honestly pointing to SH$T that happened in his gosh darn 7th pro fight, and since then he's fought better and bigger guys and has knocked them out... i mean dirrell has fought a stinker agst stevens, but ya'll don't pay attention b/c the focus is on the Olympics GOLD medalist, not the middleweight bronze medalist. It's like he's under a microscope... i mean chad dawson, in his big step ups he's been down, like eric harding, and i believe adamek knocked him down, but pple dont' pay attention, b/c they only want to focus on the guy who's gonna make something of himself, define an era, and that is what Andre Ward is gonna do, and i can see after he wins and knocks out kessler, pple will say "well kessler is tailor made for him, give him dirrell, a guy with equal handspeed and can move and we'll see what happens to him." While you guys are eating crow I'm gonna repost this on Nov. 22nd and I'm gonna gloat like Pacquiao throws left hands, ALL DAY!!! Holler!! GOod article F-lo writa', waita encapsulate the issue. This is all good and fine, but Andre Ward 2009!
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 08:43:59 PM
brownsugar@deepwater:  Deepwater,.. I hope your not betting any money against SOG,.. or at least not enough cash to miss when it's gone...
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 08:46:11 PM
brownsugar:  Ya'll hear that??,... Mister Lee has spoken,... the fat lady don't even have to sing now.... great post!!

MisterLee:  B-sug, your the man! forget bert sugar! Brown sugar is where it's at. There will be a small number on November 22nd serving a LARGE pot of crow. Come and get it! If it's bitter, rotten, and nasty, it's good CROW! Holler! :)
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 08:56:10 PM
MisterLee @ B-sug:  I know it's hard to defend Floyd like Chris Rock says it's hard to defend rap music, it's just too hard to defend! Ward in his 20th pro fight has and will do something that Floyd has YET to do in his 40th pro fight, FIGHT THE BEST IN HIS DIVISION. Ward won't need to profess his greatness, his gentleman like demeanor and his great boxing skills will do all the talking. Ward is 3 times the boxer and 5 times the man Floyd will ever be. Enough of scareweather, on to good and better boxers! I think ward would need a few tune ups, some good title defenses, and a few step up opponents like pascal, allan green etc. before he takes on the likes of dawson. I can see those guys having a trilogy in 2011 or 2012. Also you guys rag on Ward so much, but he fought 4 fights in 2008 while taking 3-4 months off for an injured knee! Now that's dedication to the sport, and being a consumate professional, which pro can say that? Most pros these days, even top pros fight 2 times a year, i bet ward would have fought 5-6 without the injury. This year alone, ward is already to set to fight his 4th fight, this year was: henry buchanan, miranda, pudwill, and kessler. What a line up! Floyd, you suck! Holler!
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 09:01:24 PM
#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  If Ward gets past Kessler who I believe is the toughest opponent in the tournament then its cruise control from there. Kessler was totally outboxed by Calzaghe who didn't have much power, he just frustrated the hell out of Kessler. If Kessler learns how to move better and not be a stationary target then he might have a shot at beating Ward. Get past this fight and Ward takes the tournament. As far as Abraham and Froch's concern, Ward better thank Taylor for exploiting their flaws.
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 09:13:34 PM
brownsugar@MisterLee:  Mayweather IS,.. and will always be one of my favorites,.. and he's already impressed the world many times over,.. besides Mayweather is very astute at defending himself,... I'm looking forward to seeing the closing act of his career at 147,... but hey,... to each his own..don't like him,.. so be it. ... I can live with that......
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 09:26:33 PM
Fe'Roz :  Mister Lee finally gets the fight and the fighter he has staked his claim and his name on. Andre SOG Ward. The are few Kessler fans on this site. I suppose we have fewer Europeans and even fewer that have seen him enough to take more than an educated stab at predicting the outcome of this fight. Not being a Calzaghe fan, I watched Kessler match up well the first half of the fight before JC turned on his after-burners. But, for today at least, Ward is not yet Calzaghe. I personally liked the Kessler I saw that night. At least the first version. His inactivity may be a huge factor. We shall see. Ward is to be given credit for taking him on so early in his career. If he stops MK, Mister Lee will be serving others.....but enjoying much richer fare himself.
Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 11:32:19 PM
Isaiah@MisterLee:  May the complete public embarressment that the Rugged Man put on ScareWeather finally light a fire under Scareweather's @$$ to put up against the best or shut up. He knows beyond a doubt now that too many people see through the charade and will except nothing less then to fight the best. I'm sorry... you know what, NO I'M NOT! 19 year old prospects, lightweight's pretending to be welterweights and rematches with Ricky Hatton will simply not do brother. Choose a lesser opponent and I bet it hurts him the most where it would hurt someone like him the most, the wallet! Back to the task at hand... Kessler wins this tournament hands down and starts out with a nice UD over Andre Ward, but like you were basically saying, at least Ward ALREADY has the guts to face the best.
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 03:58:08 AM
Loner@MisterLee:  MisterLee,I am also a huge fan of Ward.I hope Ward will win on Nov.21. MisterLee,you can contact me at: lonerrenol at yahoo dot com.

GOAT:  Ya'll dudes are funny. This article is about Ward but ya'll still spit your venom towards PBF? Ya'll really have a problem! Damm, ya'll hate PBF that much? None of you PBF haters can have an objective disscussion about PBF. Sad, so sad. Ward by UD.
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 06:42:11 AM
Master Snake :  Since I'm following GOAT's comment I just want to say that PBF is a moron. "Boxing will die when I leave the game." Truly the raving of a lunatic! Boxing has been, and always will be, the truest fighting sport. MMA is losing it's luster after a decade of decadence. Sure, they have one belt per division. But that worthless strap is passed off like a hot potato at least twice per year. Now, about Ward v. Kessler, what evidence is there that Kessler can be knocked out and when has Ward ever knocked out a guy as tough as Kessler. I would say Miranda is 85% as tough as Kessler. Ward couldn't get him out of there. And if he didn't do it because he lacked the motivation or desire after being headbutted by a human goat in front of his home crowd, that lack of killer instinct may cause him to shrivel in front of a very tough boxer with power. If Ward focuses on boxing and dictating the pace of the fight he can definately win a decision. But 12 rounds requires supreme concentration. If he gets off track he may get caught by a monster right cross and suffer his first KO defeat.
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 08:39:29 AM
MisterLee:  Andre Ward will knockout that guy! between the 8-10th round! He'll be too fast, too slick too elusive, and will hit kessler too much to let kessler into the match! Can someone name a round in Ward's last five fights in which he just did a 3 min. stinker? Any dirrell stevens, jones vs. bhop in there? I openly challenge anyone to shut me up! Deepwater can't find a round, can anyone of you? Is there any evidence to back up your assertions of "no desire, lack of concentration, no inside game, unwilling to trade/fight" or are these assertions based on the fact that he's a skilled fighter, a gold medalist, and pegged as a "pretty boy" even tho he fights ugly! Kessler will be counted out at 9, Andre Ward 2009!
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 09:31:03 AM
MisterLee @ Fe'roz:  I thought Kessler had some well timed shots in the first half too, he had some good timed right hands, and it was the volume and speed of calzaghe that wore him down, not just "superior skill". The volume and activity made him uncomfortable b/c that's his pace of the fight. @ Master Snake, MMA passes belts like hot potatoes b/c there's a wealth talent and there are no "tune up" fights for top champs and contenders (unless they're recovering from losing streak) and there are always about 4-5 super talented athletes in each division that fight each other and lose just like what would happen in the welterweight division of boxing, the most dangerous division. In MMA, they don't have the money nor luxary to pad champions' records with 20-0 victories and stupid mandatory defenses from opponents from places and countries we never heard. Holler! oh yeah, and less catch weight fights too!
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 09:35:08 AM
Warped Design:  I can't believe you guys think Andre Ward will knock Mikkel Kessler out. It must be fervent Jingoism or wishful thinking. Ward's only chance is a points decision, but this kid is no Calzaghe. You would do well to bear in mind that Audley Harrisson won a gold medal.
Thursday Nov 5, 2009 11:05:57 AM
Peplz@MisterLee:  You're saying that Floyd never fought the best in his division in his entire careeer? Its funny how a persons dislike for a public figure can push one to fabricate facts that are really just there on mental perception. Floyd Mayweather won his first world title at the age of 21 in the 130lb division. He beat a guy by the name of Genero Hernandez who was the best in the division. I like Andre Ward. And Master Snake. You are the first dude to ever speak up for MMA and recoil at the notion that boxing would die. R.A. the Rugged Man is truly a moron that acts like he's a boxing expert but kept stating false "facts" consecutively. And he resorted to the childish debating tactic of accusing Mayweather of lieing when he refuted one of the R.A.'s false facts. R.A. just cursed Floyd out and called a liar and muthaf$&%er over the phone and some people act like he said something new and of substance. And he himself seems to be congratulating himself as some sort of tough guy for talking crap over the phone. He's a cock boy. I like Ward to beat Kessler too, but to hear someone else who is picking Ward say that Floyd Mayweather Jr. sucks makes me want to rethink my pick a little. Because now its obvious that you don't know what you're talking about. The funny thing is the main reasons I was picking Ward to beat Kessler is because of Ward's simialarities to Mayweather. The leaping left hook and the way that Ward avoids power shots and adjusts to his opponents are characteristics that to me seem to be modeled directly off of Mayweather. If Floyd Mayweather Jr. really sucked like you say I doubt that his name would've even come up in the comments on an article about Andre Ward. Holla.
Friday Nov 6, 2009 03:21:17 PM
MisterLee @ Peplz:  Yo, we talking about boxing, not Hannah Montana, I don't care who you pick or who you like or what ya think about what i like. The fact that you can't be objective about someone you like shows your still green in the boxing world. All boxing experts including R.A., who is writing a boxing book with Doug Fischer of Ring Magazine agree that Floyd needs to step up. Where does Hernandez rank in the history and p4p rankings in boxing? Nowhere? Hatton was the top of the jr. welterweight division when manny fought him, do pple hail it as the biggest accomplishment a boxing can accomplish? No! Know why? B/c tho hatton is strongest in a division, he's a relative nobody in the grand scheme of things, sure, a decent fighter in an era not an ATG, so quit sweating Floyd's jock. Yes Ward fought like Floyd in the Pudwill fight, he used the shoulder roll, the lead left hook, crowding the opponent with his feet and stance before unleashing, did some Roy Jones Lacy triple and quadruple left hooking, and did some Ali style head stuttering/movement/slipping, but that doesn't take away or differentiate between Floyd's skill A plus to his out of ring behavior and opponent choice D minus. And your questioning your liking of Ward b/c of what i say or do i have to say is pretty dum, as a lot of Floyd fans are disgustingly enamored by him, and i can still appreciate floyd's skills (i actually liked the baldomir fight, also the phillip ndou fight, tony pep, gatti, and chop chop fight), and floyd's fans are 10 times worst than pacquiao fans, b/c they are loyal, sometimes fantastic, but there's a limit to their nuthugging, while the more abrasive, rude, and ill Floyd becomes, the harder his fans hug his nuts.... Floyd was actually quite gracious when he left the sport at his top... he called Oscar De La Hoya as having the "heart of a lion" and he seemed humble and honest, and the further he is from his peak the stupider, more abrasive, and more insecure he is becoming. Ward is a gentleman, he's gonna fight 3-4 of the best super middleweights in the world, and floyd is ducking cotto, margarito, mosley, williams, clottey... he's afraid on the air, b/c if he coughs he knows that an opponent in welter will call him out, ANYONE in the jr. welter, welter, or jr. middle would fight him any time anywhere for any amount of money, yet he's looking at marquez (superfeather and blown up lightweight) and a 19 year old prospect. I give floyd some credit for the de la hoya fight, but not the hatton fight, beating an undefeated jr. welter is nothing like fighting a tru welter, who could take floyd's best sunday punch and keep moving forward...floyd has actually never knocked out a top welter, not judah (who cotto knocked out) nor baldomir. So yeah, i stand by it, ward has guts, scareweather doesn't. And Peplz, grow up and form your own opinion and stop whining about other pple's opinions, your starting to sound like scareweather. Holler!
Friday Nov 6, 2009 11:11:44 PM
MisterLee adds:  And Clottey also knocked out Judah, and so did cotto, clottey was beating baldomir before getting DQ, so really judah and baldomir are not the best names to have on your resume. Who cares what kind of belt they had for 3 defenses, they are good fighters at best, never great. How many times did floyd defend the jr. middle belt? 0. know why? B/c he decided to fight a jr welter next. Zero credit for that fight, holler!

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
