Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto Hits A Hot L.A
By David A. Avila
WEST L.A.-Reeking of sweat, heat and the scent of more than 100 body odors in the small West L.A. boxing gym, Miguel Cotto seemed right at home as he used the ropes, shadow boxed, hit the mitts and chit chatted with a few celebrities on Tuesday.
Cotto’s rare L.A. media workout brought out the journalists eager to capture the Puerto Rican bomber who defends his WBO welterweight world title against Pound for Pound champion Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) on Saturday Nov. 14.
The clash takes place in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and will be shown on HBO pay-per-view.
Cotto spoke with television star Mario Lopez and posed with the Tecate girls before sitting down to speak with the several dozen fight reporters. On Wednesday it’s Pacquiao’s turn.
“I wouldn’t be here unless I thought I could beat him,” said Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs), who is soft-spoken as usual.
Standing in the corner away from the press was cut man Joe Chavez, a long-time trainer in the gyms of East L.A. and perhaps the best hand wrapper and caretaker for boxers suffering gashes during a fight. Many attribute Cotto’s win over Joshua Clottey to Chavez’s ability to shut down the blood streaming down the Puerto Rican’s face.
One thing most people overlook is Chavez previously worked with Pacquiao too. Aside from hand wraps and cuts, the man also knows boxing. But don’t ask him who is going to win.
“I stay out of that,” said Chavez, who may work with Pacquiao in the future. “I just deal with the day to day stuff.”
But ask Chavez what Cotto does well?
“He’s a very strong puncher,” said Chavez. “And he’s a very good counter-puncher.
That’s what he does very well.”
When Cotto and Pacquiao meet next week it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Puerto Rican boxer force the Filipino superstar to attack. He’s probably seen dozens of tapes and evaluated what opponents like Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales were able to do successfully and throw out the strategies that didn’t work.
Told that Pacquiao has been talking about Mayweather, Cotto was succinct with his response.
“After I beat him then he can fight Floyd Mayweather all he wants,” Cotto said matter-of-factly of Pacquiao.
Most people forget that Cotto has only one loss. That came a year ago to Mexico’s Antonio Margarito. The issue of hand wraps though often given to Cotto as a scapegoat was not grasped.
“Nobody knows if his hand wraps were illegal or not,” said Cotto of Margarito.
Cotto is a man’s man. He would rather beat Margarito in the ring then have some commission reverse the loss of July 2008. He knows a win over Pacquiao would vault him to the top of the Pound for Pound standings too.
“I don’t know how fast Manny Pacquiao is but we’re going to find out,” said Cotto.

As long as there are NO LOW BLOWS, the unavoidable all time record of 7 wins will happen on Nov 14. And why ?......MARGARITO was not hit at all with a low blow and went home victorious. DISQUALIFICATION because of low blow will be a disappointing scenario for boxing fans who did not mind spending and squeezing their pockets with $54.95 for PPV in this hard economic times.

Pac is a sucker for a good right hand... plus he leans forward while throwing the left,..and if he misses it,.. it causes him to be out of balance... and he's subseptable to uppercuts,. I'm sure Cotto and company noticed... Cotto's not going to be another punching bag on 11/14...pc...

Cotto leans forward for no apparent reason other than bad teaching and balance. He is easy to counter punch and hit with a flurry of uppercuts and hooks. He carries he feet to far apart and will not be able to escape an onslaught of any type of pressure.

You don't know how fast Manny is but you said will find out? Oh, you will find out find faster than you will know just like Hatton kissing that canvas and ODLH throwing towel! You better bring your "A" game the second that bell rings or all hell will break loose and often does when the Filipino Daredevil is on that ring! Whack! Boom! Down and out! Go home everyone, party is over!

This fight will be a war. I have huge respect for both of these guys. There is no other way I can say it. This will be a fight of the year canidate for sure. I can't wait. My bold prediction which defies the odds remains the same. Miguel Cotto will win this by TKO in the 10th round. It kind of depresses me to pick against Manny, but that's the way I feel gentlemen. Huge props to both men for giving a fight fans want to see. By the way, deep down, whether you can prove it or not, each and everyone of you know Margartio cheated against Cotto. I don't care how bad you are. How many times could you take extra wrapped, hardened plaster to your face? I'm humble enough to admit, I wouldn't have just submitted, it might just kill me! Cotto's so called loss is forgiven because he doesn't use it as an exscuse and still seeks out the best challenges. Trust me you all. On November 14th, you will not see Cotto being weight drained or past his best because of being 145 pounds which is still reasonable or any other reason. You will see the best Cotto. Can Manny handle this? We shall see.

With the utmost respect for both men, I'm rooting for something bigger. History. The story of this fight, Miguel Cotto notwithstanding, is about Manny. Whether or not He can do what no one in boxing has ever done. A Pacquiao victory is big news. Seriously big news. A Cotto victory is great for Miguel.....and welterweight boxing in particular. Floyd will be forced to decide: Shane or Miguel. His circle will have been squared. There will be no other acceptable opponent. But for boxing at large, a Pacquiao victory will be a much much greater story. Asia will awaken. We all will. Manny is today's David. Everyone else, Goliath. Everyman can relate. His story is our story. Challenging and overcoming our limitations. Doing the inconceivable. Now I wish Miguel all the best. He is a man's man. Win or lose.....and he did lose.. he moves on. The same can be said for Manny. He has avenged every meaningful loss (ie Morales). He can take a beating.... and then quickly redeem himself. It is one of many reasons he is held in such high esteem. My head says Cotto is finally too big, too strong. But my head is wrong. Manny by TKO.

im a pacfan but im nervous bout the nov 14 fight. Cotto is visually bigger and i saw hes body and oh boy he do got the muscles. He might be stronger , tougher , bigger but if pacquiao defeats him it will be a very very very bad publicity for him. Imagine a guy coming from the 103 or 106? Defeating a natural WW who is at its prime and on the top elite WW. Anyways goodluck to both guys.

You're right. There are two things you can't see on film. One is the impact of power. the other is speed. You can train for power. You may be surprised at how much power your actual opponent has once you get into the ring, but you can train nevertheless. Speed is another dimension altogether. I happen to agree that miguel has never seen the likes of Today' Manny Pacquiao; the bigger, stronger, more complete fighter. And comparison's aside, he certainly has never seen (or not seen) Speed and volume that Manny delivers.
Now, in fairness, manny has been training with stronger bigger men... but that is sparring. we still need to see what happens when he gets hit.... and as importantly, How Often he gets hit. Because if his speed is what I believe, he will hit Miguel fast, often and hard.....and be gone. We shall see. Miguel, I'm afraid, will not.

Pacquiao has zero wear and tear! Honestly, marquez and morales were the last ones to really hit him good, and even then he was not seriously hurt. As much as pple remember his reputation as a brawler, the guy hasn't been seriously hurt since becoming a two-handed fighter and better defensively since Morales 3. This is a continuation of that, he's far too fast, too dangerous, and too elusive. Rack it up as another Pacquiao KO. Give him 3 more fights, and retirement. Pc!

What Miguel Cotto says at the end of this Article is when he says:
“I don’t know how fast Manny Pacquiao is but we’re going to find out,” said Cotto.
I'll give you a hint or say CHECK IT OUT!
Take a look at the Manny's 2nd round knockout of Hatton... even in slow motion Manny's punch is still travelling at faster than sounds....

Margarito should be an embarrassment to any Mexican boxing fan. On November 14, Manny Pacquiao is going to get seriously hurt. It is too sad because he is a pretty entertaining fighter. Manny Pacquiao has never fought someone like Miguel Cotto. Please do not bring up Hatton... Mayweather beat that cat years ago and he was just playing with him. De La Hoya by the time he fought Manny already had five losses. A a matter of fact he had been losing fights since 1999 before he faced pacquiao in December 2008, almost 10 years past his prime! Remember Felix Sturm... yeap he beat Oscar but the judges gave the fight to Oscar. That is the reason I am not impress with the fights that have made Pacman look like a million bucks. On fight night, you PacFans will finally awake.

Pacquiao is dangerous and fast as well as intelligent. His development into a more complete fighter proves the latter. Cotto is poised, deceptive, powerful, resilient and his ring IQ is underrated. Pacquiao seems to go into a bloodlust at times like a shark that smells blood. This is when he is most dangerous an also most vunerable. Cotto's defense is good when it comes to head movement but he doesn't seem to utilize it, or focus on and sharpen it. He can be hit when he has lapses in his guard. I see this fight going to ways. Pacquiao TKO cuts....unlike Clottey if Cotto cuts as bad as he did against Clottey Pacquiao will go into a frenzy and may force the ref to stop it. There is a flipside to that coin like Deniro in HEAT said. If Cotto catches Pac with one of those beautiful..... left hooks while Pacquiao is in his frenzy, it's gon be like Beyonce said ....a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare ! I think I just gave Cotto's hook a name.....beautiful nightmare !!! That's not the only way I see Cotto winning. This is boxing , and I see Miguel putting money in the bank (bodywork) , slowing Pacquiao down , freezing him with one of those bodyshots and putting the icing on the cake ...pitbull style. I welcome any surprises cuz I'm sure they'll be pleasant. Ya boy is back !!! Whaca !!! Dueces
