Weigh in on Williams-Martinez, TSS U.

Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez Is A Go For Dec. 5

By George Kimball

The Sweet Science has learned that the transcontinental game of musical chairs set in motion on October 23, when a doctor's note got Kelly Pavlik excused from his December 5 date with Paul Williams, is near resolution.  It now appears that Williams will face Sergio Martinez on Dec. 5. Atlantic City, the original site for Pavlik-Williams, has re-emerged as the leading contender to host the bout, although there remains the possibility that it could wind up at a Las Vegas venue.

Once Pavlik was off the card, the task of preserving the HBO date had fallen upon Williams' promoter Dan Goossen.  Goossen had hoped to pair a Williams fight with another involving heavyweight Cris Arreola, which, since Arreola and the promoter are California-based, would have made total sense had he been able to secure a west coast venue.  When no California sites stepped up to the plate, Goossen was forced to turn his attention elsewhere.

What had loomed a stumbling block to the matchup has been overcome in that Martinez' WBC junior middle title will not be at stake.   Although Williams (37-1) could presumably have made 154, he had been preparing for a 160-pound fight against Pavlik.  (His last fight, a 12-round decision over Winky Wright, had also been at middleweight.)

Although Martinez (44-1-2) is a natural 154-pounder, he has fought at middleweight in the past, though never against an opponent with Williams' pedigree, but the Argentine-born, Spain-based Martinez had been training for an over-the-weight bout on the Dec. 12 Juan Diaz-Paulie Malignaggi card -- in part at the behest of HBO, who wanted him to be available should Pavlik fall out.

Master Snake :  Diaz - Malignaggi II; WTF! Paulie shows us that if you whine enough in this country you may get what you want. Dude lost a close decision. That's it. I hope this time Diaz loosens up all of Paulie's cornrows with hard left hooks. Regarding Paul the Punisher, homeboy is from South Carolina not California. I know it's not as recognizable, but trust me, you come out a little tougher growing up in the Dirty South. Williams by TKO4 over Martinez should this fight happen. Let's hope it does. Paul needs some ring time and the fans are ready to see him in action again.

ali:  I scared I hope the boy Williams is focus and doesn't have a let down cause he didn't fight against Pavlik. Martinez in a bigger Quintana with alot more expericence I wish Clottey would have man up and took the fight with Williams instead of making up excuses.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 01:11:45 PM
GOAT:  Bad fight for PW. I like Martinez. PW might not be motivated and not train as hard. With fighters, if they don't have to make weight, then they sometimes don't train as hard for a fight. We all know what happened last time PW didn't train right for a fight (Quintana). Bad fight for PW.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 01:29:22 PM
GOAT:  Before people start, I'm not saying Martinez is better than PW, it's just a bad situation (style, money, motivation) for PW and I see him loosing.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 01:30:30 PM
Frank Z:  I'm just glad that PW is able to keep fighting and improving his name, dude deserves a big time fight with the floyd mayweathers up to the kelly pavliks, hopefully they can work Quintana and Clottey back into the mix as well.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 03:16:48 PM
FOS@GOAT:  Well I’ll say it! Martinez IS better a boxer than Williams and he is a lefty like Quintana, if he uses Quintanas blue print on how to beat Williams he could probably KO him. Bad choice indeed he would need another 1 punch KO for this one. Watch for the sneaky left hook that fooled Cintron (when he was KOed and thought that it was the head butt.) and the referee. I see William loosing this one as well. Clottey lost another chance of proving himself against a great fighter, his loss.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 03:20:12 PM
brownsugar:  I can't believe he went and done it !!!!!,... Paul may have more heart than he has brains,.. Marinez is no joke,.. and is capable of outboxing,.. and even hurting Williams,.. Williams however made the right choice by taking the fight to 160,.. Martinez is a totally different fighter with a totally different style than he was preparing for ,... if Paul can pull this out he'll have my respect fo sho'
Friday Oct 30, 2009 05:19:47 PM
ali @ Brownsugar:  That's what I love about him he don't care he will fight anyone if he wasn't as brave as he is he would never get a fight. I think if he's able to beat a guy like Martinez it would show that he really learn from his lost to Quintana. If that's the case it going to be really hard for him to get a big name fighter in the ring unless it a 168 and that would be really incredible if he was able to beat maybe the winner of the super six.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 08:14:47 PM
ali:  I just found out the fight is at 160 so I feel a little better about Williams getting a victory over Martinez. It was alread bad enough that he was fighing a southpaw that moves and can box (totally different then Pavlik) but if he had to fight at 154 too when he's been training for 160 would have made me even more uneasy.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 08:51:19 PM
brownsugar@ali:  Yeah,.. we have to be thankful that their are some "men" in boxing who will just DO IT !! .....throw caution to the wind just for the fun of seeing who comes out the winner,.. even if Paul loses,.. he'll still be a winner in my eyes,.. you should have heard how he dissed Clottey who recently turned down 650,000$$$ to fight Paul... supposedly he had never been paid as much in his career,.. he was initally low-balled at $250,000 then HBO increased the purse to $500,000 then $650,000 and he still baulked,.. hope the thin man can pull it out...

Fe'Roz:  If you all want a laugh after a hard week's work, check out the youtube interview with Floyd and The Rapper R.A. :the Rugged Man. We can talk later....after you hear it. LTP is possibly the only old school warrior in boxing today ....except Manny . He will fight anyone....at any weight. He has legit gripes. The self-professed 'best' refuse to fight him....and all the while he will fight anyone anytime. Pavlik and Clottey have just ducked him. Now he, in order to stay active and fight at the elite level (unlike most boxers who simply chose opponents to 'stay busy'), has decided to train to fight another of boxing's best, Sergio Martinez. The risks and challenges are known to all....nost of all Paul. He admit it is frustrating and damn near impossible to know what weight to prepare to fight and how to train ....when you don't even know who might be willing to accept his challenge. He is without question the most avoided....and I would add feared....fighter today. Good for Martinez. I have Paul out working him in a close fight. But as obama might say...this will be another 'teaching moment'
Friday Oct 30, 2009 09:22:07 PM
Isaiah:  Martinez is a bad man. He's nobody's gimmie and could very likely outbox Paul Williams. Big credit to Paul for taking this fight. Paul is exciting to watch and is made of steel. This will be a close fight because Paul takes no gimmies and he was training for a completly different opponent. I have nothing but respect for Paul because he truly will fight anybody and everyone should always respect that. Floyd don't want none! Floyd should have stayed retired, because now he's surrounded by challenges. Anyway, Paul wins against Martinez by a close SD.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 09:59:35 PM
Frank Z@Fe'Roz:  So uh... i just listened to that interview, and i have two words for Rugged Man: THANK YOU.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 10:01:28 PM
Fe'Roz @ Frank Z:  Said it all himself, didn't he? Floyd was at best pathetic....and at worst an inarticulate spokeman for his lame position. Either way, it was a Halloween treat.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 10:27:45 PM
Frank Z@ Fe'Roz:  i loved it, he said just about everything i wanted to say to floyd, and i'm in the same position, that i WANT to see floyd succeed, i love his style and ability, and if he wants to get his money and get out i will never fault him, but quit screaming about being better than the sugar rays, cuase i hate being lied to like i'm stupid.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 10:30:08 PM
Fe'Roz :  Yessir. I agree completely . He is free to do his business an move on. We all will. With or without him. But Sugar Ray and Sugar Ray are here. To stay.
Friday Oct 30, 2009 10:47:10 PM
ali:  F**ck Ra the rugged man he made a couple of good points but for the most part he don't know what the f**ck he's talking about. I hate when people say he needs to fight somebody his own size when he has had a lot of fights were he was the smaller man. Also I hate when they say he's scared of Mr my tooth hurts when anybody that knows about boxing knows that Mr my tooth hurts ducked him a couple of times I ain't making this $hit up it %100 the truth.
Saturday Oct 31, 2009 01:19:47 AM
Isaiah:  Heard the interview with Rugged Man and I have something to say, THANK YOU SIR! MAY WE HAVE ANOTHER? HA! Did you all hear the part where Floyd said that boxing will die without him? PLEASE!!! As if any one man could do that! Let's make it simple. Floyd doesn't even have to talk next time. Next time when the interviewer asks him why is he ducking someone, we'll just go ahead and have a prerecorded exscuse for him and then after we all get lobotomies, we can each give him 55 dollars for fighting Saul Alvarez because everyone knows THAT'S the fight the world's be waiting to see. HA!
Saturday Oct 31, 2009 04:41:18 AM
Frank Z:  I think i have to clear up my position since i have a history of defending floyd, and i will still defend him against certain people who just call him a coward without heart. my issue with him is that he continues to scream at us that he's the best, the best p4p ever, but his resume simply does not prove it after he left 130 lbs. he has not proven much to me since he gutted out two fights with jose luis castillo. it would not be nearly as frustrating if he didn't act so immature and completely avoid confrontations with people who challenge him on his legacy. he talks about money or his reputaion whenever someone challenges his skill in the ring, and it's very frustrating for those of us who actually want to discuss legacy. he can't be saying that we can't talk boxing if we didn't fight professionally. a lot of us have experience to an extent in the game from watching fights, from training in gyms, from having amateur fights etc. his skills i seriously think are the best since sugar ray leonard, but can he really improve as a fighter if he hasn't taken the top fighters? sure everyone hand picks fighters but does floyd want to be like everyone? he wants us to think that he's the best, and until he does something different from everyone he's just a guy whose skills and talent are above everyone but that's it. @ali, i don't buy that argument about shane ducking floyd in 2006, cause he said in that interview that he won't fight floyd..,. that year, but he'd fight him next year, and then he got on espn and said that it's time for him and floyd to go at it after floyd was done with oscar. now... if floyd just wants to make money and leave, that's fine, a man's health should be #1 priority and a man's money is also crucial, but you go about your career that way and still claim to be the GOAT, it simply does not work that way.
Saturday Oct 31, 2009 09:52:03 AM
MisterLee:  This is a fight!!!
Saturday Oct 31, 2009 11:17:01 AM
ali @ Frank Z:  Mr my tooth hurts didn't sound like he wanted a fight with Floyed when asked period. Now there are some things that Floyed said I didn't like like boxing is dead without him and when he said legacy don't pay the bills I ain't feeling none of that $hit. If he don't fight Mosley, Cotto, Pac, or Williams next im going to call him a scary buster. One thing I know is if he can't get a fight Cotto or Pac cause of Arum he damn sho can get one with Mosley or Williams. I don't want to here any excuses from him if he don't fight one of them guys but I know he will and I bet the Floyed hater will still have something bad to say about him mark my words.
Saturday Oct 31, 2009 01:03:24 PM
Frank Z@ Ali:  i hope he does fight one of those guys, if he fights paul williams or mosley and wins, in my mind it immediately makes him the best fighter this decade, especially if he is able to show off his defense and clean counters consistently through the 12 rounds. we'll never know what was in shane's heart when he said he dind't want to fight floyd in 2006, but what he said was that he WOULD fight him in 2007. what it's looking like in recent years is that shane is willing to fight floyd but not the other way around. either way man i do believe that floyd has the skill and speed, and yes even the power, to beat any of those top guys, we just have to see it, please make it happen floyd if your'e gonna claim to be sugar floyd.
Saturday Oct 31, 2009 01:31:13 PM
ali @ Frank Z:  I think Mayweather is bitter about not being able to get a fight with him when he was on top of boxing that why he's making him wait. Its like when you asked somebody you know for some money and you know they got plenty of it but they won't give you a dollar. Now if that same person was down on there luck some and you hit the lotto and he came asked you for some money I don't think your going to be quick to give it to him. We got to remember boxers are humans they have feeling to and if you do them wrong their going to feel a certain way about it. At the end of the day I wish he would put his personal felling a side and make these fights happen cause legacy should be the most important thing to him at this point in his career.

ali:  Play Online Poker FLOYD BEING SHOT AT FOR BEING FLOYD! October 30th, 2009 By RingTalk R.A. TAKING AIM AT FLOYD! R.A. TAKING AIM AT FLOYD! HEY FLOYD, YOU’RE BEING PUNKED! I went up to Eminem’s Shade 45 on Sirius Satalite yesterday at 5 p.m. to do what I thought was going to be a standard hip-hop interview to promote my new Legendary Classics Vol.1—a two-disc collection album (which in case you haven’t heard hit stores this week)—but the interview started becoming about boxing and Floyd Mayweather. I explained how I thought Floyd Mayweather was a great fighter but he needs to stop f*cking around and start fighting the best fighters in his own weight class. When Mayweather was young and hungry he fought some of the baddest dudes he could get his hands on and I was a true fan, but after he fought Diego Corroles in the early 2000’s he started taking fights more for money than legacy and actually began avoiding the tougher challenges. R.A. COMMENTS 1. Floyd has a point there, though. If people are going to complain about weight classes, don’t name other fighters in different weight classes to fight Floyd. It’s that simple. You can’t have it both ways. If you think the Mayweather versus Marquez fight is unfair because Floyd was the bigger and stronger man or because Marquez was in a lower weight class than Floyd before the fight, then don’t bring up Paul Williams. By the same logic, wouldn’t that be unfair? That’s why people can’t take haters’ complaints seriously. It’s because none of it is rational or logical. They want it both ways! How is that rational? How is that not a double standard? Besides, RA or whoever claims to know boxing, but then claims that Floyd offered Mosley a fight back in the day because Mosley was in a losing streak. Uh, no, back in 1999, Mosley was instead in a winning streak, and he didn’t start losing until in 2002. Then the punk has the audacity to claim himself not be another Brian Kenny and to know the sport. The guy is a poser, and as far as Floyd Mayweather’s ducking is concerned, that interview was too full of holes to be taken seriously. Borden on October 30th, 2009 at 9:01 PM 2. Please! Paul Williams was willing to fight Floyd at 147. The way you spin things here, did you write speeches for that numbskull George Bush, cause that’s what you sound like. Pedro Fernandez on October 30th, 2009 at 9:16 PM 3. Listen, Paul Williams is not welterweight. So once you agree that he is not a welterweight, the discussion is over. Simply because everything else would lead to a contradiction. Contradiction#1: If you are a person who complain about Marquez Fighting Mayweather Because he is not a welterweight. Then the contradiction comes when you then say Mayweather should fight Paul Williams. BUT, Paul Williams is not welterweight. Classic contradiction argument: If your argument is that Paul Williams would come down to fight Mayweather and that would make it okay, then the premise is that if Paul Williams can make 147, then he is a welterweight. But wait. If you believe that all a fighter has to do is make it in between the welterweight limit to become a welterweight? Then what is the problem with Mayweather fighting Marquez at welterweight if you believe that all a fighter has to do is make is make it in between the welterweight limit to become a welterweight? Anyway you look at it, the argument would have a contradiction, unless you give Mayweather full credit for beating Marquez and didn’t have a problem with the fight, then you can fairly and contradiction free make the claim that you would like to see Mayweather fight Paul Williams at welterweight! But you can’t criticize the Mayweather vs. Marquez fight and then say you want to see Mayweather fight Paul Williams. Do you understand the contradiction? Do you understand now why Mayweather fans have a problem with your arguments?
Saturday Oct 31, 2009 10:19:47 PM
Fe'Roz:  He doth protest too much". Shakespeare's answer to Floyd Fans defense of his record is timeless and perfect. If it takes that much effort to defend, there is a problem.
Saturday Oct 31, 2009 11:14:57 PM
brownsugar@heard the interview today:  Just heard the interview today,.. R.A. had some decent points,.. but he really came off as a loud talking Bore,.. overtalking Floyd whenever he began his reply and interjecting his own twisted version of history at every turn like two school kids vying for attention in the school parking lot while Playing the Dozens,.. but Floyd was no better with "Guess What!,..Gues What!,.. the interviewer (RA) wasn't giving him no respect or allowing him to finish a sentence...Floyd should have just ended the call but he kept digging himself in a deeper hole by trying to out-shout a guy whose like the Howard Stern of Boxing Radio(it reminded me of when Ali tried to box that Japanese Wrestler and got kicked in the shins all night),.. or maybe he could have put Freeway Ricky Ross on the phone,.. (let one knuckle head address another) an embarrassing moment for Floyd fo sho',.. but in spite of the blatant disrespect,.. maybe it's something he needed to hear.... still doesn't take away from Floyds' peerless talent tho'
Sunday Nov 1, 2009 01:07:49 AM
Fe'Roz @ Brownsugar:  But it does go to the point that I have made consistently that outside of the ring Floyd is poor if not awful at handling the bigger game of business; that being his media image and all the rewards, bells and whistles that come with it. Forget Ali, he is in a class of his own. But relative to Oscar, SRL, Tiger, Kobe and so many others, Floyd is a fool for NOT developing the skills that could truly help build and extend a sustainable empire.... once his ring career is over. his footwork in the ring is incomparable. His ability to put his foot into his mouth outside is as great. Too much time in the Big Boy Mansion navel-gazing,....and not enough time learning the bigger 'Game' if I may say.
Sunday Nov 1, 2009 10:57:01 AM
paulbo:  Williams chose his absolute toughest test at junior middleweight. Outside of Martinez, there's not a junior middleweight who can test The Punisher. For that matter, Williams probably would beat any middleweight too!! That means Martinez is Paul's best challenger in 2 DIVISIONS!! How do I see this fight? Martinez outworks Paul for a unanimous decision.
Sunday Nov 1, 2009 01:14:58 PM
Isaiah:  Waah. Paul Williams fighting Mayweather wouldn't be fair because of the weight difference. The point was that Floyd was saying weight doesn't matter when he fought Marquez and now he won't fight Paul Williams, so that's FLOYD'S DOUBLE STANDARD! Waah. Pacquiao and Cotto are fighting eachother. Won't fight them no matter who wins. Waah. Shane Mosley wouldn't fight him a few years ago and now Floyd won't fight him because he has some kind of vendetta even though everyone knows that fight would make multi-millions. Act like it wouldn't. Like Elvis said once,"A little less talk and a lot more action! Now go get me a Cheeseburger! UHUH!" Trust me Floyd Lovers, when Floyd retires, no one else will care and the sport will remain alive and well.
Sunday Nov 1, 2009 02:47:10 PM
brownsugar@Fe'Roz:  Yeah,... to be fair,..Fe'Roz,... Mayweather was beastly at 130 and 135,..he moved up to welterweight with the body of a junior welter,... easily making the weight with several pounds to spare,.. now that he's grown into a full welter and cannot go any lower,.. his only choice is to fight the best at 147,.. his legacy is sealed at the lighter weights,.. but so far there's no argument to support bids for supremacy at 147 untill he's taken on the divisions best,.. he craves the public eye,.. which is evident by his developing relationships with billionares,.. the Wrestling Industry and Hollywood ,.. he's ventured into several business,.. and is always seeking to expand his horizons from a business standpoint,.. even after a decade of living a very privileged lifestyle he still seems to be amazed at what his dollars can buy,.. and comes across as characature instead of a real person sometimes,..so I agree than the maturing process is still ongoing,.. I'm waiting patiently to see what he announces in the later part of November
Sunday Nov 1, 2009 03:10:53 PM
Fe'Roz @ Brownsugar:  I think we all agree that it needs to be a major welterweight contender. Nothing else will satisfy. And, given that my wife is a publicist and has shared with me many of the most basic and sophisticated techniques of media training, floyd should use some of his ample funds to learn some of the basics. I assure you Tiger, Lebron, Tom Brady and others all have....pc
Sunday Nov 1, 2009 03:27:13 PM
brownsugar@Fe'Roz:  Yeah,.. LOL,.. arguing with the Howard Stern of "off-the-sidewalk-internet-video reporting" is not the way to go,.. pc.....
Sunday Nov 1, 2009 03:44:17 PM
Fe'Roz:  Seriously. How can you have that kind of game in the ring.....and be had so easily outside.
Sunday Nov 1, 2009 07:10:39 PM
swift:  I have a news flash for a lot of you on this board! Paul Williams is a way better fighter than the paul williams that lost to quintana! And if that second fight didn't prove it, the winky wright and verno phillips fight should have... Sergio Martinez is a very good boxer, but he will get ripped apart by williams and it will only be close for the first 3 rounds! It's funny listening to the mayweather fans make excuses for this guy! He wouldn't come in at the scheduled weight for the marquez fight, but then turns around and says he's really not a welterweight?!?! You guys keep believing his B.S, I see right through him...

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
