F-Lo thinks it's a good move for Cris to get back on the bronco that tossed him. Course, it'll help that the foe won't be Vitali...

It's Great Arreola Is Back So Soon...But...

By Frank Lotierzo

The last time we saw heavyweight contender Cris Arreola 27-1 (24) in the ring he was taking a one-sided going over courtesy of WBC champ Vitali Klitschko. For the ten rounds the fight lasted Arreola's inability to make Klitschko miss him with straight lefts and rights as he plodded forward, along with his ineffectiveness of scoring and getting close to Vitali became more apparent with each passing round. During the fight Cris showed that he was willing but looked as if he only brought a knife to a gun fight.

Make no mistake about it, Arreola isn't a greatly skilled heavyweight, but he can punch with both hands and also showed against Klitschko that he has a dependable chin. In 2009 any heavyweight who can hit and who can also take it pretty good has a jump on the rest of the lot. Against Vitali Klitschko, Arreola had to overcome his lack of experience at the world class level along with facing an opponent who's not only tougher to fight than he looks, but he's also better than most credit him for being unless they're already huge fans of his.

After losing in his first title bid, Arreola showed disappointment in the ring while being interviewed immediately afterward. He vowed that he wouldn't take a lot of time off and would get back to the gym and fight again soon. Which of course sounded good and endeared him to boxing fans, but in all honesty he wasn't taken all that seriously and didn't warrant the benefit of the doubt.

Well it looks as if Arreola was serious. Last week he agreed to fight on the undercard of what was originally scheduled to be middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik versus welterweight/middleweight sensation Paul Williams. Due to Pavlik having to pull out of his bout with Williams because of the lingering effects of a staph infection, Arreola is getting a chance to share the spotlight with Williams in a high profile bout to be aired by HBO.

Now that Arreola has agreed to fight on December 5th, his management has to be careful in regards to who he fights next. He's already shown that he has some things to work with. The last thing they should do is put him in with someone who might shake his confidence. The beating he took from Klitschko no doubt brought him back down to earth as a fighter. However, for Arreola to maximize his ability he needs to feel good about himself again and needs to fight an opponent who'll challenge him and make him fight, but needs to have the night of his life to beat him. A loss in his next fight after losing to Klitschko would be both emotionally and financially devastating for him, making it nearly impossible to bring him back up to where he was.

It's been said in some boxing circles that Arreola should take more time off before he next fights. Wrong. His management needs to be careful in picking his next opponent, but he needs to get back into the gym and start training and building his confidence back up. Arreola has a lot to learn and needs to get in better shape. Having  power and a chin gives him a good base but as he found out fighting Vitali Klitschko, it's not enough. Cris needs to learn to be more elusive and not so easy to hit, and it's paramount that he improves offensively when it comes to delivering his power.

As of this writing the names David Tua, Ray Austin and Oleg Maskaev have been thrown out as possible opponents for Arreola. With HBO having final say, it's doubtful Austin will be accepted. The possibility of an early round knockout over Austin is too great and that will not go over well with anyone. That leaves Tua and Maskaev. No doubt Tua-Arreola would be the best matchup for the fans but, Tua's too dangerous for Arreola, (unless they want to bring Tua back as an HBO fighter) especially after being stopped in his last fight. David hits harder than Cris and has an even more proven chin. Tua is vulnerable to being out-thought and out-boxed, but not out- fought. If given the choice Maskaev is the right opponent for Arreola to meet on December 5th. He's not a great boxer and he's hittable. At the same time he can punch so it's not like Arreola can fight and approach him as if he's handcuffed. And fighting someone like Maskaev will force Arreola to work on his defense and better him at learning how to make the other guy miss.

At this juncture Arreola has to work on getting better as a fighter and it wouldn't hurt for him to drop a few more pounds if he's serious about fighting for and winning the title the next time he gets a shot at it. The last thing he can do is balloon up and look like a slob in his next fight a year down the road. By then boxing fans will have forgotten that he at least showed up and tried to beat Klitschko, something that can't be said for Samuel Peter and Juan Carlos Gomez.

Apparently Cris Arreola wasn't just talking and saying what he thought fans wanted to hear from him during his post fight interview after losing his title bout versus Vitali Klitschko this past September. He's taken the first step and has agreed to fight just two months afterward. Now let's see if he makes the necessary commitment to better prepare and become a more well rounded fighter in the interim.

dr3r42:  As usual, great points. Probably in a perfect world, I'd rather have Chris get his confidence back by fighting either a stiff or a gatekeeper, who can't punch. But if he wants good money, he's going to have to do what HBO wants. Like F-Lo said, I'd avoid Tua (and Grandpa McCall) because style-wise they are bad matchups, and if he beats them it's like "so what." Maskaev would be the ideal choice (although he can bang too, he doesn't have the chin or stamina), but I thought he was under litagation trying to force his way into a mandatory matchup with one of the Klitchkko's. Better to get KO'ed by one of them for a couple million rather than by Chris for a few hundred G's

dr3r42:  "Huggy Bear" Ruiz was trying to force a matchup with Chris A. a few months ago. And I think he has the prize of being one of the mandatory contenders. I know HBO wants nothing to do with Ruiz, but Arreolla will force the action, could be a good fight.

RIVERSIDE:  good aricle frank, you sound like pretty boy's adviser, fight maskaev but not tua, because tua hits hard, if arreola wants to be the best or aleast try to be the best he needs to fight the best ooposition out there and lay everything on the line, not cherry pick opponents so hbo will have good ratings, if arreola is going to improve he needs to fight tua right now, jab and box instead of slugfest, the best boxers out there, cotto, pacman, and especially mosely fought the best out there, moseley gave prime winky wright a fight when he did not have too and also fought the much bigger forrest, when he did not have too, and the latest when he fought feared at the time margarito when he did have too, fight the best arreola, fight tua

AFN:  Very impressed, though not suprised, at Cris's professionalism and warrior mentality. This is his job, the way he earns his living. No point crying over spilt milk, he's a lion not a pussy. Toney is hungry for a fight. As tough an opponent as Cris could hope for, but a win over James would certainly put him back on the map. And from Toney's view point, beating Cris in as comprehensive a fashion as Vitali did, would give him great leverage in calling out either Klit. Williams v Martinez, Arreola v Toney, what a double header that would be. EL TOONOY

jay:  a fight between tua an arreola would be awesome. seeing too tough explosive opponents going head to head. id have to say though ima fan of arreola's he's an awesome fighter a true warrior but if he fights tua he has to fight smart an not disrespect tua an try get him in the early rounds cuz tua only has to punch once to shake his opponent. after watching tuas fights on you tube i forgot was a force he is in the ring. hes oneof those fighters that jus disapeard off the rador since his loss to Lewis...all i can say is il br rooting for arreola but il placing my bets at the TAB on tua...this samoan beast will be 2 much. hes got a granite chin an punching power in both hands.

straight jab:  Agreed Frank. I don't know why any contender would go out of their way to fight Tua. As you aptly put it. Tua can be out boxed, and out foxed. but arreola does not have the style or ability to do that. the Maskaev fight would be good for chris as he would be in against a credible guy. I'm not sure that it gets HBO great ratings or arreloa a ton of respect though. depending on who williams fights it may not be a rainmaker ratings wise. just throwing it out. Whats the take on Arreola -Toney? would fit HBO's requirement. would be a name fighter for Arreola to fight. Toney certainly even at 100 yrs old still has boxing ability, and Arreola would learn a lot fighting him. chris would probably be safe fighting Toney at this point in his career, being bigger stronger and more active. plus Toney would take the fight, expect to win, and very well could counter punch his way into a close fight.

BBFan:  Man, I really wanna see Tua vs Arreola. It's just good to see Tua back in the mix. He's so exciting with right matchups.

BBFan:  Man, I really wanna see Tua vs Arreola. I'm just happy to see Tua back into the mix. He's exciting with right matchups ,,,and there are plenty of contenders who match up with Tua. So let the bodies hit the floor! Its Tuatime!

Robert Curtis:  Thanks, Frank. Expert analysis. Arreola vs. Toney would be dull. Even if Cris won, Toney would still make him look bad. Arreola/Maskaev is a meaningless fight to fans(at least in this hemisphere), but as others say, it could build confidence for Cris. Arreola trading bombs with Tua may please fans. But Cris is not going to learn anything fighting Tua that will help him in a rematch with Vitati. Plus he could get hurt. Those body shots and sky hooks Tua throws are damned dangerous. Plus Tua will come in hungry knowing he has few chances left. I'd like to see McCall get the shot. I'm curious about that fight.

Isaiah:  I really wanted to say Tua-Arreola, but that style match up is all wrong for Arreola right now. Maskeav is where it's at. If Maskeav want's to fight Vitali again, the first time since way back in the amatuers, then he should go through Arreola. It's a solid test for both men. Once upon a time, Maskeav BEAT Vitali in the amatuers and maybe he feels he could do it today to the COMPLETE fighter Vitali is now. That's why Maskeav is a dangerous lineup for Arreola and a great one at the same time, because Maskeav knows it's now or never and his style is closer to Vital's, not as good, but closer.

#1floydfan:  Tuas next fight will be in January

MIke M:  I would prefer Tua. Tua has an iron chin and power, Maskaev has power but a shaky chin and more shopworn. Maskaev has a little better boxing skills but is very hittable (like you said). Both of those guys like the Rahmans, Ruizes, and Golotas, etc are 10 years past their prime. Tua can get outworked but his power will make this fight very compelling. If an in shape Arreola cannot beat a rusty 36 year old Tua, what the heck is in this business for? This is the fight he should have had under his belt before Klitschko and you can't go back to feeding him softies. BTW Oleg is 40. Can you believe they matched Oleg up with Oliver McCall (26-6) after 7 fights and a 26-0 David Tua in his 12th fight, followed up with a fight with 41-6 Alex Stewart in his 13th fight! Now we are talking about if it may damage Arreola's career to fight a much less dangerous Tua than 10 years ago. Is this what boxing has come to? Arreola needs tough fights to determine if he is really a contender or a pretender.

TotoyBato:  Cristobal should be all fired-up and will be ready for anybody (except a Klitschko of course). After that pathetic sobbing (like a little boy) he should be motivated to the extreme to prove himself again. I think Cristobal will bulldoze any heavyweight (except a Klitschko of course) put in front of him. Cristobal knows what he lacks and needs to work hard. If he needs further motivation he just needs to replay a tape of his sobbing.

kountedout:  never was a believer of arreola. i want to see him against tua, peter, estrada. i dont know if he can get by those guys

Porkupine:  Even an old Toney would light up Arreola...Arreola beats Tua on volume, Tua throws punches like Bernard Hopkins hands out tips.

dr3r42:  The heavyweight division's kind of muddled right now. You've got Chambers and Povetkin both with mandatories against an injured Wlad- so they can't take any huge risk. Povetkin was due for almost 4 million vrs Wlad (a crazy bid by K2 Productions that blew everyone out of the water), and I'd imagine Chambers will get between 2-3 million. Those guys would be crazy to take risks. Then you've got Maskaev, who's had a lawsuit to try to force the WBA to make Vitali fight him. I serriously doubt Maskaev truelly believes that he can beat Vitali- despite what happend over a decade ago in the amatuers. Maskaev got blasted out by Sam Peter last time he fought which was over a year ago. He wants one last big payday against Vitali before he retires. Tua's been fighting stiffs off and on for the past few years, sitting around waiting for guys to fall in front of him- as long as he keeps winning. He might take on Arreolla if the price is right, because he matches up well with Chris in terms of style- like other posters have said, Chris doesn't have a plan B. Goosen is Chris and James Toney's promoter (at least I still think he is) so I don't know if he'd want to knock off one of his own fighters. But HBO does have extra money to burn since Pavlik opted out- so you never know.

Pete steward:  Arreola is a bum!

Matthew:  I'm glad to see Arreola getting back on the horse so quickly. After the Klitschko loss, I stated that he should take a few weeks off and then get right back in the gym, and it looks like he is doing just that. I think Maskaev is a good selection as his next opponent, if Maskaev agrees to it. I don't see him getting a shot at either Klitschko anytime soon. I think Arreola stands a better chance at being successful if he fights around 240, or even slightly lower. He should fight 5 or 6 times next year, which would also help to keep his weight down. In two or three fights, I'd like to see how he does against a Tua or Sam Peter.

Ray:  Mccall is a good opponent, but I rather see Maskaev, better yet how about Samuel peter.Peter is perfect,ex champion, same size etc, lets get it on.

the Roast:  Tua by KO!

Gunboat Smith's ghost:  Arreolla is a fat, lazy slob who will never make it too the top. No real resolve or intestinal fortitude. Much like Peter, he is lost against a really talented opponant and inside quits or makeit easy for his opponant. Actually, a Arreolla-Peter fight is a natural. Someone should make this fight. WHO do you think would win?

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS.
