Uncle Evangelista has been banished and young Santiago has the top slot as Cotto's trainer. Does Pacman enjoy a huge advantage in that department, with Coach Roach?

Cotto Trainer Santiago's Point: The Fighters Will Do The Fighting

By Rick Folstad

Joe Santiago looks like a guy who might sell you insurance or do your taxes or fix your car.

There are no serious scars on his face or wrinkles under his eyes, and he doesn’t have one of those crooked, telltale noses that says he’s been in a few ring wars. His fingers are all pretty straight, and if you passed him on the street, you wouldn’t look at him twice.

He looks young and educated, someone you might meet at a stockholders meeting.

So how did this guy become head trainer of one of the best fighters in the world? Aren’t trainers suppose to look like Mick from the Rocky movies? You know, the gravelly voice, the cauliflower ear, maybe a stogie stuck in the corner of his mouth. A real trainer should be older than dirt and he should wear tired shoes and a watch cap. He should be someone who could tell you how he almost won the middleweight title back in 1959, but he got cut in the 13th round when he was fighting Kid Savage at The Garden, but damn, he was so close. If they just could have stopped the cut from bleeding.

That’s not Joe Santiago.

Bet a few eyebrows popped up when he suddenly took over the responsibility of getting Cotto ready to fight Joshua Clottey this past June. Wasn’t Santiago a nutritionist or something? So how did he get this job?

Well, he pretty much inherited it.

When Cotto’s uncle/trainer, Evangelista Cotto threw a cinder block through the car window of Cotto’s new Jaguar after the two had an argument and threw a few punches back in Puerto Rico earlier this year, their relationship became a little strained. The uncle was let go, camp was moved to Tampa and Santiago was handed the franchise.

Santiago passed his first test when Cotto beat Clottey despite a bad cut he suffered in the early rounds. But there were some problems in the corner that night.

“Sometimes in the corner we were a little late getting in and getting out and being where we should be between rounds,“ Santiago said on a recent conference call. “We had different people going in there and at times, it was difficult to work.“

With the biggest fight in Cotto’s life just up ahead, they need to smooth out those rough edges.

The franchise will earn about $10 million on Nov. 14 when Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs) defends his WBO welterweight title against Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, though the fight should carry an asterisk since Pacquiao’s corner demanded they fight at a catch weight of 145 pounds instead of the welterweight limit of 147 pounds.

But Cotto and his camp don’t seem too concerned about the catch weight. Cotto weighed 146 for his last fight, that gutsy win over Joshua Clottey.

So what about Santiago. Is he in over his head?

“I have known (Cotto) for seven years and I know they talked about bringing in well-known trainers,” Santiago said from their training camp back at the Fight Factory in Tampa where they trained for the Clottey fight. “But I think the fact that I have known him for a long time and he feels comfortable with me gave me an advantage over all those guys. I think it‘s a question of getting everybody on the right page and I think we’ve done that.“

While Santiago is still learning his way around as a head trainer, Pacquiao will be sitting in his corner listening to Freddie Roach, one of the most respected trainers in the game. But Santiago said he doesn’t feel intimidated.

“I have a lot of respect for what Freddie Roach has done, but it has nothing to do with us,“ Santiago said. "It’s the fighters that are going to do the fighting. They have their work to do and we have our work to do. As long as our guy wins, we are going to get recognized for it.”

Promoter Bob Arum, who promotes both Pacquiao and Cotto, said Roach, who has talked about a first-round knockout, is a great trainer, but he’s also a great psychologist.

“A lot of what Freddie says is to get in camp Cotto’s head,“ Arum said on the same conference call. “There is nothing wrong with that. That’s boxing. The fight could go a lot of different ways, and that’s why it’s going to be a great fight.“

Any predictions from Cotto’s camp?

“On the 15th, we will be at 145 pounds, no question,” Santiago said. “On the 14th, it’s going to be a great night. And on the 15th, we are going to celebrate with the country of Puerto Rico.”

Smiley C:  PacMan by 7 round knockout fo' sure!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 07:39:07 AM
Master Snake:  Senior Roach is stoned from all the pheromones in Pac's jockstrap if he thinks Pac is gonna KO Cotto in RD1! This will be the first tough fight for Pac since he last fought Marquez in March 2008. He will have to rediscover some true skill for this one if there is any to be found. Hopefully Cotto's team is good enough to prepare for the right hand flick followed by the left hand missile. That is all there is to Pac's game!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 08:04:44 AM
kountedout:  saw clips of inside the cotto camp. didn't like what i saw. cotto leans to far over his left foot, more then he use to and that is perfect for an uppercut. i know he wasnt showing what they really were working on however his mitt man didnt look like he had been doing it for to long. i have to lean toward pacquiao to win this fight even though i want cotto to win

Tu papa!:  Freddy is going to throw in the towel like he is used to doing when his little filipinos face boricuas!!!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 08:51:16 AM
Robert Curtis:  Have to give the fight to Pac. He has grown into a near complete fighter with good movement, balance and a deep toolbox of punches. Now Pac's skill set matches his speed. He used to be a one-bomb wonder who kept throwing himself off balance with a Hail Mary left. But that's ancient history. Now Pacman is a genuine champ and P4P star. Cotto should do better than Oscar and Ricky, but he'd have to have a perfect night to beat Pacquiao.

bill m.:  when cotto took two knees the night he fought margarito i was disgusted.i could not understand why a guy like miguel cotto who had been knocked down a few times but arose to win those fights would all of a sudden do that? well,we now know that margarito was loading up his gloves and surely did that night against cotto.that explained it to me and i have asked for his forgivness.jesus ,didnt margerito ever hear of resto/collins? he should be banned forever the scumbag! now ,as for pacquiao and cotto? i really like both guys and hate this fight for that fact but thats the game of boxing.i feel that pacquiao has improved more than any fighter i have ever seen in my 55 years and in such a short time. cotto has leveled off .i just feel that manny pacquiao is unbeatable right now physically and mentally.pacquiao by ko in less than 3rds! they will both make enough to live forever comfortably anyway .....

MisterLee:  Pacquiao will dragon punch Cotto out of the ring! Ann Wolfe has more hormones than Joe Santiago! Holler!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 10:17:22 AM
RIVERSIDE:  odds are against cotto, pacman has blown out, dlh, and reckless hatton, cotto's chances are better if he drags pacman into the later rounds, where his speed wil not be factor, but them again cotto is the one has had stamina problems in the past, cotto did his best in couterpunching in the mosley fight, how is cotto going to fight is the question as the agressor or the counterpucher? and hopefully hurt pacman in the later rounds, i'm hoping for at least 10 rounds of good fighting, thats we boxing fans want to see
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 10:42:40 AM
deepwater:  Gato figueroa did his thang thang on cotto. Frankie the wrestler threw his ass in front of arum. lol.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 11:49:41 AM
Master Mongoose:  "right hand flick followed by the left hand missile. That is all there is to Pac's game! " - Master Snake Oh that's all? You mean someone as "crappy" as DLH and Hatton should have been able to figure it out right? Have you WATCHED a Pacquiao fight? Anyone who's watched just ONE round knows that he throws bombs in volumes. There's a reason why he's called a pacific typhoon. Cotto might have great timing but if Cotto doesn't come out more aggressive than Pacquiao he will not be able to counter effectively. I liked both Hatton and DLH but you can tell that mentally they weren't 100%. Cotto need to keep his ducks in a row and hope they're not lined up like a shooting gallery.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 12:26:55 PM
rommel:  puerto rican boxers are all history now in terms of boxing. they don't have the kind of tito trinidad anymore. cotto will be kissing the canvass in the 2nd round.

#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  From watching the first episode of the 24/7 series I am a little concern about Team Pacquiao. I don't know if it's all hype involved but if the tensions are true then Pacquiao might be in trouble inside that ring. Distractions are always a recipe for defeat. I liked how Roach said that no excuses will come out of him if they were to lose. But I'm still sticking to my original prediction, Pac by KO in the 7th!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 01:37:54 PM
#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  The true test for Pac is that now he's in the limelight and can he overcome what some fighters couldn't while being already on top. Can the hungrier Cotto use his underdog status to beat Pacquiao who many don't think is taking the fight seriously? If he can overcome this then I must say that he is truly one of the greatest of all time.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 01:41:27 PM
chance:  pac-man wins in # 6
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 01:52:43 PM
mo:  Cotto will win! Cotto has another secret trainer and he's been doing lots of plyometic training behind close door and they're not showing the public wht they've been doing.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 01:52:56 PM
Steve the hater:  Go Cotto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 02:59:43 PM
#1floydfan:  Pacquiaos only advantage will be his footwork.......Speed has never been a factor for Miguel Cotto......I have no doubt about Cotto being able to take Pacs power.......Cottos been fighting the bigger men since Pac was still campaigning at kiddie weight..........No one in the game throws more volumes of punches then Tony Margarito.......So again this will be no prob for Cotto.........I am predicting a Cotto victory by round 10..........And I also predict that on the 14th of November the Philippines will be struck by more flooding..........But this time it will be floods of tears.............Tears of sorro lol.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 04:41:17 PM
rasheed514:  santiago, just a little bit of a reminder, coaches will have to play a great part when the fighting gets rough... come on man,"think NOW(“On the 15th, we will be at 145 pounds, no question,” ), and think of something more LATER ON"(On the 14th, it’s going to be a great night. And on the 15th, we are going to celebrate with the country of Puerto Rico.”)... GOT IT!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 05:15:56 PM
TOKNENENG:  There's nothing new on what other Boxers, Trainers, sports analyst, reporters and haters said on how Pacquiao will be beaten and loose before the fight. But everybody was proven wrong after the fight! Now here comes Cotto, and trainer Santiago, and the same people that don't believe that Pacquiao is the best of the best and still saying the same S#it... when are you guys gonna learn? We'll see it again after the fight on the 15 Nov.... just watch!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 05:28:16 PM
MisterLeec:  Word to wise: pac hits harder than clottey (i'ma clottey fan), and he's 3x faster, and clottey triple hooked that chin and body fo' sho! Pacquiao wins inside of 8 rounds. He'll either get a quick knockdown, or will break cotto down in the mid rounds and finish him off. once pac smells blood, no amount of wrestling nor low blows (which WILL happen) will stop him. holler! the boricua is going down! shouuuuyou ken! dragon punch that cotto. pc!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 06:12:29 PM
Chef Boya-Lee!:  Grillin' a huge pot of crow for the cotto fans! Holler!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 06:16:03 PM
noy2k:  here we go again...how many times have we've been here before? the more we doubt, the more they got knocked-out!!! sheesh....get used to it. "after all these things gets unfold, you will realized he is the greatest boxer of all time" - uncle BOB!!!! hahahaha....it surely looks that way now. after COTTO gets defeated come Nov.14th all you fools can have another chance to doubt him once again in the mayweather fight given that money will be brave enough to fight PAC instead of just keep talking. I just hope PAC wont fight at 154lbs for his 8 weight division belt....hahahahahah google...gooble...gooble...PACman!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 06:26:58 PM
#1floydfan:  Oh and I guess Pac hits harder then Mosley and Tony ? Perhapes you think hes a million times quiker then Juda and Mosley too huh? Get outta here lol......You sound surprised Cotto got caught with that triple hook.........Question...Was that before or after the cut? I watched the fight too Lee.....And all I saw was Cotto put a whipping on ya boy Clotty........With one eye closed
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 06:30:06 PM
#1floydfan:  Hey I found the antidote to beat ya boy Pac.......you wanna hear it? Well too bad im gonna tell you anyway lol........I dont know if its an inbread thing or not.......Im realy not too concerned about what they get up to in thier country but.......Ya boy Pacs got a lazy right eye.........Picture this........Cotto slowly moves to the right then makes a quick switch to the left and drops that left hook on him before his right eye even has time to adjust......Now do you think that would work? lol ha ha ha ha lmao he he he he he......Quit acting like hes super man fellas Cottos got just as much of a chance at winning as Pac does.........The winner gets ma boy.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 06:55:50 PM
joebentvice:  @#1floydfan...your boy is not going to fight nobody...except alvarez, the red head...your boy that chicken don't need to wait for pacquiao-cotto, he can fight mosley if he weren't crapping in his pants scared.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 07:07:41 PM
FloydZ:  "On the 15th, we will be at 145 lbs, no question." WTF, isn't the fight on the 14th? Cotto will be at the contracted weight ONE DAY AFTER THE FIGHT. You got this mixed up Rick.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 07:17:20 PM
alexander hermann:  cotto should have learned from morales, de la hoya and hatton. these three 3 fighers weighed so much, 15-20 lbs over the weigh in weight. they shed off their extra poundage within a short period of 2 months. after the weigh in, they tried to rehydrate for the fight night. the result? they became weak and sluggish. in short, cotto will walk into his own trap of defeat.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 07:24:27 PM
boxing fan:  nobody knows who will win on this fight, both were trained hard and for sure they will give their very best...i feel more nervous i guess for the result...i hope it's a clean and entertaining action fight...good luck guys but only one remain stand in the ring.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 07:33:02 PM
sein:  Trainer is really a big factor especially for a very big fight like this. Although cotto's coach joe is right in saying that inside the ring its gonna be cotto who will do the fight. But his not alone. Remember Coach Joe, it is you who prepares your fighter for the fight. And during fight night, you'll sit beside your fighter in between rounds and give instruction to your fighter. So what happens inside the ring also reflects your master plan for the fight. Take some responsibility coach. Be ready for it! I expect this fight to end before the 10th in favor of Pacman. But that can change depending on Joe and Cotto's fight plan.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 07:47:29 PM
Wayne:  Cotto is too mechanical. Fights the same way everytime. Easy win for Pacquiao.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 08:04:06 PM
MisterLee @ #1 scarefan:  Ya fellas wanna battle, a chachacha! For one, cotto's left eye was bleeding, which made him open for the straight right, but left hooks come from his right eye side my friend! Cotto hit nothing but gloves, even when clottey was immobilized for two rounds b/c of the body slam. Clottey hit cotto at will. How many times was clottey hurt in the fight? How many times was cotto hurt? Rashad Holloway, welterweight, and chief sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao who was a sparring partner for Margarito says Manny hits harder than Marg. Actually Manny's like two times faster than Judah or Mosley, was Mosley ever able to hit Oscar at will like Manny did? Was Floyd (who is faster than mosley). Also, Pac is not "my boy". I'm a boxing fan who likes Pacquiao, but i'm not a "Pacquiao fan". My favorite fighters are Darchinyan, Raf Marquez, Donaire, Katsidis, Timothy Bradley, Mosley, Clottey, Collazo, Angulo, ANDRE WARD (09), Chad Dawson, Glen Johnson, Bhop, Winky Wright. But i do think pac is gonna win for the record. And you're gonna get a fresh helping of Crow. Cotto is gonna lose b/c of his flaws , not his strengths. His flaws include: spotty defense, fading or cotton feet dancing in the late rounds, inability to hold or box when he's hurt, leans forward in his stance which leaves him open for uppercut, and weak chin. Mosley also didn't use his jab nor a game plan in fighting cotto. Mosley would whoops his ARSE if they fought again. Mosley underestimated him thinking he was the bigger faster and stronger man. Cotto's strengths include a killer poppy left jab, huge left hook, underrated speed and explosiveness, good heart, takes on any fighter, can box or brawl, can adapt to opponents, very strong. However, pacquiao is too fast for anyone one 130lbs, so like i said before, Nov. 15-22nd, CROW ALL WEEK SERVED BY MISTER LEE! If I lose, then I'll be eating crow all week... at least until Andre Ward ouboxes and knocks out Kessler! HOller! I will repost this message when the time comes. Crow eaters beware! I'm adding extra tabasco and lemon juice to the crow to let the maggots fester even more! Holler!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 08:04:33 PM
Fe'Roz :  Mister Lee has broken it down exactly as it was. Manny watched from ringside as Miguel struggled with Clottey and saw more than a cut fighter struggling valiantly. I know I did. I saw a fighter who was not only more vulnerable physically but mentally as well. A fighter who was less sure of of the effect of his own power.....and equally uncertain about that of his opponent. A slower Cotto. A more tentative Cotto. A Cotto who was no longer used to seeing his punches take opponent's apart. A Cotto who backed off when they failed to deter his opponent. A Cotto who, quite frankly, never damaged his opponent; an opponent ho stood right in front of him all night. Now I know Clottey is a strong man....and that Cotto was cut. And that the cut was bad. But lot's of fighter's have fought cut....look Pacqiuao against Morales.....and still remained Offensive. Cotto did not. He did what he had to to beat a man who beat himself....precisely by failing to work until the end. Manny will not repeat Clottey's mistake. He will not stop throwing. He will catch Cotto early and often. Manny....and anyone not biased....saw what Knockedout described. A fighter leaning heavily over his left foot. A worrisome habit. A habit Manny will exploit....and attack precisely. Left hooks and uppercuts await Miguel. He will be seeing demons for as long as he is standing. Pacquiao before the 9th. pc

ANONY - WE THE FANS NEED TO DO SOMETHING:  This 24/7 has been the best I have seen from the production point of view. The program really stands up to the "all access" motto they advertise and is very interesting to watch. That's great for HBO. But, I'm not going to get into my appreciation because I'm sure we will be discussing it until the night of the fight so I want to draw the attention to another subject and it is the devastation of the Phillippines. What HBO cameras showed is something you just can't pass as a side story, guys. I wonder why Bob Arum, Pacquiao or even Cotto don't call the attention on this and use the fight to raise money to help these people. I mean... somebody should do somethin!!!!!!. SO I PROPOSE that we (the fans) campaign to press HBO and Bob Arum to use the fight and raise money to help them!!!!! I mean, I know business is business but how richer can HBO, Bob Arum, Manny or even Cotto can be???? I propose fans and the boxing media to press HBO and Top Rank to give a 10% of the profits from the fight to help the people of Philippines.... And you can say I'm crazy but the question is WHY NOT????? HBO and Top Rank can use this to draw more attention to the fight and raise more money. They always ask for our money, now we can ASK THEM to give it back to the most needed using this fight to do what is right. Ain't Pacquiao an idol in Asia? Well use him to help his people!!!! They can't be that greedy. THIS WILL BE THE BIGGEST MONEY FIGHT EVER MADE AND WHY THE PEOPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES CAN'T BENEFIT FROM IT??? They gave us Pacquiao and now it is time to pay them back!!! EM... I'm sending a flyer and a proposal of this campaign to you and I'll appreciate if TSS study the possibility. Maybe throw a poll asking: Will you like to see part of your PPV money go to help the victims of the latest Phillipine's typhoons? and I'll do the banner and send it custom made to other websites.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 08:28:48 PM
#1floydfan:  First of all do you ever recall me asking who your favourite boxers where? Secondly Cotto was never even close to going down........Ill tell you what I did see was Clotteys ass hitting the canvas.........And thirdly does this guy Rashad Holloway have some sort of measuring device built into his face? I didnt think so.......Than how would you know? And 4thly 2 times faster than Mosley and Juda huh? I think your exadurating your mistaking Pacquiao with Superman lol...........Like I said before Pacquiaos only advantage will be his footwork and his southpaw stance..........Cotto in 10 baby get your crow ready leeroy ha haah
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 08:32:52 PM

Isaiah:  I'm a huge Manny Pacquiao fan, but he is not faster than a speeding bullet. Manny can not leap over the Sears Tower in one jump. ...And enough of this stuff, Manny will find this step up too rough. Cotto wins by TKO in the 10th round, like I said before. As a fan, there is no loser in this. It's just 2 winners and 1 victor. Let the exscuses of why Floyd Mayweather won't fight the winner of this or Shane Mosley, or take a stay busy fight with Andre Berto commence! Ah Mayweather, Mr. 1.) "I'm not fighting for money now, I'm fighting for my legacy./ Oh, Shane Mosley isn't a PPV attraction... 2.) Manny Pacquiao's Manager decides who he fights next, I'm my own man, I decide who I fight/ Mosley calls him out to his face... "Oh, Um... you'll have to talk to my manager...3.)" Floyd says Marquez called him out/ Didn't Mosley call Mayweather out to his face? In dfferent interviews, it's like this... Why don't you fight Mosley next Mayweather? Who,Who's... ("stutters") Whos' Shane Mosley? The guy with 5 losses? (This was part of a real ESPN interview, by the way, random # of losses of guys going into a fight with Mayweather...Baldomir-9 losses, Arturo Gatti-6 losses, Oscar De La Hoya-4 losses, Juan Manuel Marquez-4 losses, etc...) In another interview, man asks, why not fight Miguel Cotto? (insert chicken noises. BCUK,BCUK,BCUK!!!) Who's Miguel Cotto? He's a nobody and not worth my time. Another interview, man asks, why not fight Manny Pacquiao?/ Well, (BCUK,BCUK,BCUK!!!) SOME huge explanation about random things that has nothing to do with the question and.... That's all the time we have! That's pretty much how it went down. Next Floyd Fight, Saul Alvarez or a Ricky Hatton rematch... and then he'll retire for good and says he has nothing left to prove. Do you all know what Floyd Mayweather eats for breakfast every morning? Give up? EGGS! He lays them himself! HA!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 09:52:19 PM
richard:  Cotto now is not worrying regarding nov 14 fights h has a game plan to knock manny....just tell to all people Cotto is 3 months practicing on how to punch mannys 2 balls perfectly thats why he i confident this game. Cotto is the grestest balls puncher ever leave he is doing with jab judah and other fighter, perfect for disqualification of cotto.... Pacquiao is the new WBO Welter Weight Champion
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 09:54:41 PM
#1floydfan:  I aint going to get into this with you right now this is about Cotto but i will catch up with you another time ummm? Isaiah......I already got 5 counters on what you just said.......Boy you going to have to do better than that lol
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 09:58:06 PM
richard:  Next Pacquiao fight is with Nikolai Valuev for WBA Heavy Weight Championship.....lol
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 10:00:31 PM
Jasper Murdock:  I can't wait until this fight happens. I love this match because someone is going down. The question is has Manny fought anyone with the power of Cotto? De La Hoya said Manny didn't punch hard! However he got lit up like a lightsaber but I give De La Hoya props because he has a chin made of granite. On the real though Manny ain't 2x's as fast as Sugar Shane or Judah. In my opinion I think Judah is faster than Floyd. If you watch the first part of the fight you can see it!. I don't think anyone would step in the ring with Manny if he was two times the speed of Judah! No way is Manny faster than the Zab Judah that knocked out Cory Spinks.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 10:06:15 PM
Fe'Roz :  I agree. Let's talk about Cotto. A fight fan's fighter. A man who turned welterweight just three (3) years ago in December and has already fought Carlos Quintana, Zab Judah, Shane Mosely, Antonio Margarito and Joshua Clottey. Six of the best welterweights alive. All in their prime. Six! In three years! Now Floyd, who also turned Welterweight four (4) years ago in November, has fought Sharmba Mitchell, Zab Judah, Carlos Baldomir and Ricky Hatton. Four (4) welterweight battles in four (4) years.....the last against Hatton, a true undefeated champion.... at Junior Welterweight. So that makes three. Mitchell, Judah and Baldomir. Now to be fair, he did box Oscar at 154 and win a close decision. He then recently burnished that moment of glory by taking on and beating a genuine featherweight fighting three full division above his weight...the venerable JMM. Now I think Miquel is a lesser power at welterweight that he was at 140....but that has not stopped him from fighting valiantly against his peers....and his equals. All of them. The same simply cannot said about Mayweather. In two weeks, Two great fighters face off against each other in their prime. Neither one is named Floyd.
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 10:36:32 PM
PACMAN's neighbor:  whoA u ("#1floydfan")..even pacquiao vs COTTO n MAYWEATHER..StiLL PACMAN's gonna WIN...LOL..i can compare Mosley fighting style to Hatton wich Mosley defeated from your COTTO--then why COTTO never hurt Mosley?? it realy prob that he's to weak..If he can beat PACMAN thats the time the time when PACMAN got 60yrs old..HAHAHAHA
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 10:39:53 PM
PACvsCOT:  ITS LIKE SHADOW BOXING FOR COTTO..... (get the point?) COTTO says i thought i hit him but he is not there! LMAO!
Tuesday Oct 27, 2009 11:14:52 PM
Isaiah:  Miguel Cotto has one awesome resume. Just look at it shine! Just look at those names in just 3 years! I mean besides Alfonso Gomez and Micheal Jennings, he's been taking on the best opposition around no doubt! This particular name escapes me at the moment, but who was the white guy Cotto beat I think right before Zab Judah? That was another good fighter that I just can't think of for anything! It's so irritating! I mean WOW! Miguel Cotto has 1, just 1, HIGHLY questionable loss where it looked like his face was shoved through a windshield and some people want to write him off, no way! That's a huge asterik on that one. How can so many people be so sure Cotto can't beat Pacquiao? There is no doubt that Cotto is NOT damaged goods when he still beats a very good Welter named Joshua Clottey and Cotto has only one eye most of the fight! Close as it was, Cotto earned that desicion and everyone knows it! Cotto's resume rocks your face off! No one, but Manny Pacquiao or Shane Mosley have that kind of resume. To the doubters, what does Cotto have to do to show he isn't through? Nothing ever seems good enough! Manny's going to learn the hard way that this one step up to many! If I'm wrong, go ahead and serve me up the crow burger, crow stew and a bud light. I admit if I'm wrong gladly. Manny has defied the odds before and he is the favorite, but this isn't no gimmie! He better be ready for the fight of his life. This is like Juan Manuel Marquez 3 man, which by the way, should happen next year!

arturo:  paul malignaggie is the fighter who got tore up by Cotto.Miguel didn't look the same in his last fight but I feel like he is a good overall boxer with a good shot of beating Manny.I just cant imagine Manny not fighting Floyd i,so my pick is PACMAN

Smoke:  Manny takes out Cotto in a forth round stoppage. If that happens Cotto should fight Hatton at a catch weight. Now there would be an exciting fight. I would definitely pay to see that one.

RED:  This will be a very tough fight for Miguel. Manny is not only faster-both in his upper and lower extremities -but heavy hitting as well. Miguel's best, and possibly only strategy, is to outright fight Manny. If he in fact is stronger than Manny, as most folks say he is, then he should rely on his superior strength. Trying to counter Manny will result in an almost guaranteed stoppage. Imposing his strength on the smaller fighter represents the best path to victory. Let's not forget that Miguel can also hit. I bet many won’t forget it.

#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  I have a lot of respect for you Anony. For you to bring up the most ignored issue shows the real humane side of you. If I'm not mistaken I think Manny is dedicating this fight to Typhoon victims. You're right they should raise money for the devastation. @ floyfan...you got your hands full(MisterLee) and me engaging would just destroy you. Great post Fe'Roz! Isiah is on the come up climbing thru the ranks!!!

Isaiah:  Respect shown and accepted. Respect given back to #1 PacFan. Cool. I hope no one was serious about Cotto being knocked out in the 1st round. Shoot, it'd take you to the 11th if you were cheating with hardened plaster in your gloves and could take hundreds of punches. HA! Thanks for the help Arturo, but Cotto fought Paulie at Jr. Welter. I know there's somebody else I'm missing on Cotto's Welterweight resume, but whom?

MisterLee pwning #1 Scarefan:  Yo dude, you called Pacquiao "my boy" and said i called him "superman". I'm clarifying to you I'm a boxing fan first, those were my favorite fighters, Pacquiao is NOT my favorite fighter, there fore he's not "my boy" and i'm not a straight pacquiao fan, or just a pacquiao lover. I'm an objective boxing fan who really thinks cotto will lose. the rest, you're arguing from your heart and dealing with linguistics and not making sound argument. I have not seen a clear boxing analysis from you yet, just like Easter , a bunch of "he said she said" "I told you so's" emotional jibber jabber. Where's big daddy , big ste, SOHK, those guys at least gave me a challenge. This is some straight cotto gomez. @ #1 pacsage, what's your detailed analysis of the fight? @ SmileyC, i need some more jokes fo' sho! my days are rough, i need some more jokes! @ The Roast! how's Afisherg, or your other angels Charlie? Pc!

MisterLee:  @ Isaiah... Tony is slow as F*#(CK, and he sure missed a lot until the second half of the fight. Therefore he really only pounded on cotto some for 2-3 rounds, and got real close and hard in the last 2-3 rounds. So in essence, it took tony after cotto got tired, 5-6 rounds to catch up with, but in pacquiao's case, speed and volume will make up for all those 11 rounds. Getting hit constantly will cause cotto to go down or to foul like no other to even the score. So no, it won't take 11 rounds, b/c pacquiao is not that slow or clumsy, nor will he take flush shots like marg. Cotto is gonna go down like china town! holler!

Fe'Roz @ Mister Lee:  The greatest misconception about Cotto's one loss is that Margarito beat Cotto because of suspicious hand wraps. Let's, for argument sake, say that the wraps were 'loaded'. And that Antonio Margarito is the Devil Incarnate. That still will never explain how Cotto failed to deter AM. Because no matter how many times you watch the fight....or how much you love Cotto....Cotto could not stop Margarito even when he was hitting him flush the first half of the fight. And man, he landed some beautiful bombs. But Margarito walked straight through him. It was then....and please, I invite you to look at the fight and Cotto's face in those rounds....and tell me if the face looked damaged....or dis-heartened. I'll tell you. It was the latter. Manny Steward said it early and he said it late. Cotto could not handle the pressure. He didn't like not being able to deter Margarito. He began to break down. Mentally. Now, here comes the 'wrap' argument. BS !!! Those same hands did not hurt or connect repeatedly with Williams or Clottey , two strong fighters. The conclusion: Both of them had better defense than Cotto....and/or in PW's case, a better work rate than even Margarito. Cotto broke down where the others did not. He was hitting..... but getting hit himself Way Too Often!! If he gets hit like that by Manny, well, you can fuggetaboutit. Maybe he can handle speed. Maybe his timing is the anecdote for Manny. But maybe, just maybe, he is only confident when he is the stalker. When his punches land with palpable impact. When he can out box a boxer. I say ....until he shows me otherwise....that he does not have great defense. That he does not like pressure. That he does not have the brutal destructive power at welter that he did at Jr. Welter. That his stamina is a function of his psyche.. And....that he will lose to Pacquiao. pc

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
