Kelly Pavlik-Paul Williams Postponed Again
By Michael Woods
Kelly Pavlik's staph infection on his left hand still has not healed, and Top Rank announced that his Dec. 5 title defense against Paul Williams has again been postponed.
"It's the same finger giving him problems. They told me he can't make a fist," Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said to ESPN's Dan Rafael. "It's getting better and better but it's going a little slow. So, we'll see."
The middleweight tilist Pavlik (35-1, 30 KOs; age 27) and Williams (37-1, 27 KOs; age 28) were supposed to clash in October, but in August, that date was pushed to December because of Pavlik's hand.
"He's trying. He's been running, he's been trying to train in the gym," Pavlik trainer Jack Loew told the Youngstown (Ohio) Vindicator. "He's trying to shadow box with one hand, hit the speed bag with one hand. I've been trying to keep it a secret but it's not going great and I'm not going to fool anybody any longer. I'm sure we're going to get a very bad reaction from their people and I don't blame them. But we've got to do what we've got to do."
It is likely that Williams will still glove up on Dec. 5, against opponent TBD. George Kimball tells us that Lou Dibella thinks his Sergio Martinez will get the date, and will put his WBC 154-pound title on the line.
Here is Top Rank's statement on the matter.
LAS VEGAS, NEV. (October 21, 2009) -- "This morning we were advised that Kelly Pavlik's recovery of his left hand has not progressed as projected by Dr. Peter J. Evans, Director of the Cleveland Clinic Upper Extremity Center,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Tank, Pavlik’s promoter. “As a result of this Kelly is unable to close his left hand which prohibits him from being prepared for a December 5 middleweight championship defense against Paul Williams
“We at Top Rank are disappointed by this unexpected development in his recovery. Once Pavlik is cleared medically by Dr. Evans we will pursue all avenues with regards to a future bout.
"We appreciate the understanding of Paul Williams, Goossen Tutor Promotions, HBO and Caesars Atlantic City with regards to this unforeseen occurrence."

NO! Long Tall Sally should stay still. If he gloves up against another opponent on Dec. 5, he may just find bad luck. This dude and his trainers are so hyped-up! Hype of this degree will prove to be dangerous. LTP should wait a bit more, so the pugilist world can see what he has. And since LTP has called out "Italian Dragon" Joe Calzaghe, maybe the punisher should replace Jermain Taylor in that Classic Six jive. JC may just come back and show LTP how to throw umpteen punches with accuracy. Of course give JC a purse for about 25-30 mil will gaurantee a comeback. Holla!

EM, i was thinking the same thing before I even read the full article. In a word, no. I think Radam is right. He should not rush into anything after focusing on Pavlik so intently. But i won't be surprised to hear his name mentioned.....and I am confident he could out-box and out-work....and be a serious threat to beat all but AA. AA is a wild card because he has the one thing the others don't. The immediate ability to turn out the lights. So here we are, with Floyd playing his game and Pavlik lame. The one man besides Manny who will fight anyone....is LTP. The most avoided.....if not feared fighter today. Now Radam, I don't want you to personally rub me any way. In fact, not at all. But how's this: If you send me your special products....soap and deodorant....I'll ask my wife to apply them. But only if you eat the crow we keep in our frig for special occasions.....and friends. pc

LTP vs. Martinez? I"ll pay for it, or at least go to hooters. LTP is the real thing, and if he talks the talk, let himwalk the walk, let him in the super six if he so chooses... i think he's pretty good. He did beat winky wright, who's like AA except with better defense minus punching power. Now that we got the Don, free J. Kirkland! Holler! Kessler is good and fine, Andre Ward 2009! :) Yep.

i think LTP should go back to calling out mayweather, if he truly feels he can still make 147. once they start doing the prefight buildup and fans see and know who paul williams is, even casual fans would flock to see the fight, just to see mayweather lose or try to attempt something seemingly impossible, going against someone with a bigger wingspan than wladamir klitschko.

Martinez has all the tools to do to Paul,.. what Verno Phillips failed to do,.. that is counter him silly,.. too fast too slick... if Williams took the fight and actually won,.. I would say he's finally arrived and the skys the limit... not discrediting Paul,.. he's one of my favorites,.. and he brings plenty of heart,..but I think he needs one more mid-level but big name contender to practice on before going after Dzinzurik,.. or Martinez,.... how about Cintron at 154 or 160???

EM,.. I don't think Paul is ready for a supermiddle weight champion caliber fighter,.. just yet,.. but in a year or two,.. after he'd dined on a middleweight or two,... bring it on... LPT would get busted up by most of the contenders in the super six in my opinion,.. but nobody has as much potential in the sport right now,.. with the exception of guys like maybe Gamboa and the other young Cubans,.. What?! Are you serious?! This is such bull!!! I actually picked Palik to win, but enough is enough. Ghost just needs to give up the belts and stop wasting everyone's time. He wasn't fighting enough anyway. One thing though, some of you all seem to conviently forget that Pavlik had flu like symptoms against Bernard Hopkins. Hopkins would have still won regardless, but it just would have been closer. Man, I'm tired of Pavlik's nonsense! Let's make that Paul Williams/Martinez fight happen. That's more like it!

NEWS FLASH people, he can't make a fist and i'm pretty sure you need them for this sport. To be honest, I can't see Pavlik winning at 100% never mind his current injured state but i'm smart enough to know that it makes for a better fight for us...

PW better be careful and not fight Martinez because Martinez can fight and might upset PW. Martinez has decent power and decent skills plus he is strong for 154, wereas PW will have to loose more weight to come down to 154 and he will be fighting a southpaw and we all know what Quittana (a southpaw) did to him. Bad choice if he fights Martinez. Plus, how much money is he going to make fighting Martinez? Not enough for a loss.

I'm glad I hadn't purchased my tickets for this one yet. It's like deja vu all over again. I've had enough of Pavlik's drama. Williams needs to keep that date and fight again this year. His camp is good enough to adjust to game planning for another figher. Cintron or Martinez at 154 wouldn't be bad options.

KP needs to be a ghost for a while and let that staph infection heal properly. No need to rush, stay out of the gym and recover so the doc can give you the go ahead to train. LTP just got lucky twice again that this fight is postponed. Maybe it's meant not to happen. God is watching LTP because KP will be his kryptonite. If many of you want to see LTP fight in the SM division why not fight Taylor. Oh well, I've given up on this fight.

From all accounts I heard Martinez is quite a feather fisted fighter. He doesn't have a huge KO ratio and he battered Cintron all night with one knockdown. Martinez is a skill ful boxer and he can keep opponents honest, but let's not full ourselves into thinking he's got KO power. Pc!

Pavlik needs to be replaced with an interim champion, this is becoming as big a joke as he is. LTP, win or lose, is proving that he fears no one, Martinez, feather fisted or not (I would say not after he cuffed Cintron severely), is ten times the skill level of Pavlik. LTP in the SS? These guys are legit big guys, let him win a title at JM or interim M first before he goes on the super size me diet. EL TOONOY

If PW fights Martinez it will go like the first Quitana fight because he's been preparing for 1 style that being Pavlik and then has to go up against someone totally different the same situation as the first Quitana fight. He was suppose to fight Cintron then that bum pulled out, and he had to fight Quitana instead and the rest is history.

I agree, Martinez is not a vicious puncher but he can punch at 154. In PW previous fights he fought against oponents who had average power (Winky, Verno Phillips, Quintana) so I think Martinez has the same if not better punching power than PW previous oponents. PLUS, this fight would be a let down for PW because he wanted Pavlik and there is a tendency not to train as hard or be prepared if you are not motivated. Hey, Shane (No one wants to fight me) Mosely needs a fight and he wanted to fight in Dec?

They showed pictures of his hand at the NYC press conference. It did not look great. Barry Bonds had a staph infection that took almost 18 months to finally clear up in his knee a few years ago. Had to have a couple surgeries also. Everyone wants this fight to happen and the doctor should not have cleared KP until he could actually start sparring again. Even at the press conference it was mentioned that KP's hand was not ready until at least a couple more weeks so that seemed like a red flag at the time. KP is just going to have take all these potshots from fans who don't know jack and just come back healthy and strong just like Vitali did. People were saying Vitali was faking his injuries also back in 2004 because he didn't want to face Rahman. Does anyone really think he is afraid to face Williams? That is a joke.

Not too many logical fans think Pavlik is scared it's just that he screwed up a potential Clottey v Mosely fight because of this hand injury which was set for 12/5. He and his team should've been more informed of the severity of the staph infection, before agreeing to a 12/5 fight. Now PW waited for all this time for a fight that didn't materialize because of this guy's hand which sucks, and Mosely v Clottey was strapped for this crap. I know he's not scared but I'm pissed that there is a gapping hole in the Dec schedule because of this clown ass team.

I understand Williams position and know it is messed up that he is being held up by this, and also know that Mosely v. Clottey got screwed also. The doctor who cleared Kelly jumped the gun and i think there was intense pressure felt by his team to make the Dec 5th date and they made a bad decision. Hopefully in a few months all will be forgotten and this fight ultimately happens. Too bad they couldn't make a Mosely v. Williams fight in the meantime since Mayweather doesn't seem to want to fight either of them.

You can't chalk it up to a bad night, unless you're talking about he had a bad night that culminated from him having a bad camp. the camp was trying to put mass on him, when power was absolutely no issue for him before. they were talking about knocking out bhop, when a prime roy jones coulnd't do it, and an antonio tarver who destroyed jones twice couldn't do it. in the corner all the trainer told him was to double up his jab, as the fight got more desperate he just said "you gotta work", till towards the end he wouldn't even talk to him anymore, and the assistant said that he was just losing a fight, not his belts. So yeah, he had a bad night, but it wasn't because of bad luck or just being on an off day, it was probably a long way coming with the way he prepared and approached the fight and an old wiley boxer like bhop who's been able to stay physically young.

Bad Night!! That was no bad night. He lost every round. Against a 43 year old who had jut lost to Joe Calzaghe. he was exposed and he knows it. he is not the same cocky fighter that beat two completely beatable fighters, Taylor and Miranda. Those are his two great accomplishments. Ouma and Spinks are not. Winky arguably beat him.... but TV needed Pavlik , not Winky. KP is a sufferer of the same disease Radam quite accurately assigns to Cotto...and that infected Hatton after Mayweather. And no, it was not caused by kryptonite. It is what I will call.....with Radam's permission....BPTSS. Boxer's Post Traumatic stress Syndrome. and a lesser but possibly even more insidious disease: Loss of Confidence. He was embarrassed and humiliated by Hopkins. Undressed in public. He has never gotten over it. Once he lost his invulnerability.....he has never recovered. I'm not suggesting how much stress plays in illness but whether it be physical and/or psychosomatic, he has it and it is impacting everything about him..So until I see the same guy who beat Taylor (a dubious milestone today) , to me, he is not the same man. Today's KP is tentative at best; promoting and then retreating in fits and starts. Choosing to fight only mandatories and Mora for Christ-sake. He makes JT look like a warrior in comparison ....which he was. If Kelly wants what he once claimed, he needs to stop drinking and face himself, change his corner....and heal his mind and his body will follow. Frankly, I predict he is finished and/or will be very soon.

Let LTP fight someone for a belt. He has not held many belts, and belts would attract more worthy opponents (154 is not bad, with mora, martinez, cintron, angulo, kirkland hopefully). I dont worry about him, neither should you, since he's the one fighting, he fights anyone, let him fight them. I think hes skilled enough as a pro to switch his game plan midway or even end of camp. important that he has a platform to showcase his talent. Holler!

Froch wins @ Frank Z:
|
I'm glad you mentioned the awful advice Pavlik was getting in his corner, because I was in shock when I kept hearing that idiot give the same stupid advice for the whole fight.
It was so obvious what Hopkins was doing and how to counter it that I wanted to scream at the screen (I was watching it on a computer) what Hopkins was doing and what the hell Kelly should have done about it in the hopes that maybe, somehow, someone over at Team Pavlik might get a clue.
At a little over the half way mark I just got so disgusted with watching BHOP destroy Kelly Pavlik with the same crap the whole fight that I just turned it off--the outcome was that obvious.
Whenever I think about that fight, I have to wonder how Kelly Pavlik ever even got this far in boxing, because he has what has to be the worst training and management team of any even quasi well-known fighter. His moronic trainer couldn't even point out the obvious and tell Pavlik a simple adjustment which might have turned around the fight--that's just pathetic.
As for his management, they've managed to turn a promising career in to a sad joke. They BSed with Arthur Abraham over the summer (they are reports that Pavlik said that his hand was fine while his management was saying the exact opposite), so you can legitimately say that Pavlik (even if it's because of his retarded team) ducked Abraham, and now they're messing with Paul Williams because of an injury that either doesn't exist (which means his handlers are ducking Williams) or has been so mismanaged by his crappy team that he's being trotted out before he's medically ready and only making himself look like an idiot while also delaying his recovery.
Add all of that to whispers (the disputed article that came out over the summer aside, there have been some people whispering in Youngstown that Pavlik's been drinking) that Pavlik's been both harming himself physically (besides the obvious physical problems caused by alcoholism, chronic drinking may be slowing his recovery from the infection in his hand, if he in fact has one) and mentally by falling in to alcoholism, and we have a "champion" with two belts who has not fought in almost a year, and who is now facing serious questions as to whether his career is over.
Regardless of whether Pavlik can't fight because of personal issues with alcohol or a legitimate hand injury (or both), if he cannot fight, then he needs to vacate his belts and let fighters who are actually fighting try to win them. Kelly Pavlik should not get a pass because he's holding a belt; if he can't defend his titles, then he shouldn't have them--it's as simple as that.
Kelly's had some bad luck (hand), made a few stupid decisions (fighting BHOP in a money-grab that, if it in fact triggered chronic drinking on his part, ruined his career), and has had awful management, but I think if he steps back, dumps everyone on Team Pavlik right now, and comes clean with any problems he migh have (whether it's a nagging injury that he can't be rushed back out on, or alcoholism as it's been speculated), and waits until he's ready to fight again before making a fight, he could turn this possibly career-ending series of events in to just a bump on the road.
The guy worked hard to get to where he's been in his career, and he has skill and ability to fight. He just needs a competent team around him that will give him the time and tools necessary to succeed. That said, if he continues down the same path, with the same people that are ruining his career (if he's not doing it to himself), he's not going to have one before too long.

Alright, alright. Let's say for the sake of arguement that Pavlik still has big potential and being healthy, a great chance to beat Paul Williams. Well, I know we don't have many undisputed world champs right now, such as Pavlik, but he's still going to lose the title soon due to inactivity since I don't see this staph infection going away in time for him to do what he needs to do. Sorry, but until Pavlik gets his act together, count me as the one of the guys much more interested in what a more active boxer is doing like Paul Williams.

did anybody see the picture of Pavliks hand on espn boxings site?? the thing almost looks like ganggrene,.. if Peters hadn't demanded that Pavik's team produce a doctors report after the first set back.. he could have lost his whole hand if hecontinued to procrastinate,.. the infection is litterally eating up his hand like the Ebola virus,.. **** Regarding Paul: he's got Lorenzo at middleweight,.. the amatuer standout from the PR,.. or Dzinziruk the slick Easter European,.. a very tough assignment,.. (154) and Martinez (154),.. don't underestimate him,.. what he lacks in power he more than makes up with speed,.. against Cintron he landed a sweet shoot that he drove all the way up to his elbow,..Cintron was hit so hard,.. he cried "Headbutt",.. the fight should have been stopped,.. but somehow the ref let him cry his way back into the fight,.. Martinez is an ex-bycyclist,.. and Soccor player,.. and he's got the best legs and feet of any junior middle on the planet,.. Paul honestly needs a slightly softer touch than him,.. both Dzinzurik and Martinez have been screaming to fight Paul,.. with the 154 belt at stake for the last 14 months with virtually little to no response from the Williams camp,.. there's a reason for that,.. those guys are damn good,... if Paul actually accepted the challenge and beat one of those guys,... he would truly deserve his P4P ratings,.. actually I'd like to see Paul fight Lujan Simon who just won the National Middleweight title... to get some more experience

Cotto definitely has it badly. He tried to wrestle and sling down one of his sparring partners for mimicking PacMan too closely. He then fired the sparring partner and mouthed hardcore about the guy trying to clown him. Not to be moving TSS Universe best and brightest readers-contributors to other site, but we know who the best and then come on the rest. Fighthype is trying to be similar to TSS, and it gets some righteous scoops. Go to that site FIGHTHYPE and holla at the piece about Cotto's terminated sparring partner coming straight-up with the truth and the whole truth. Cotto may crack before getting to PacMan, if another sparring partner go upside his head, and Cotto freaks out, I suspect that the Cotto-Pacquiao dance be cancelled. Cotto got BPTSS all up in his grill, his torso, his noggin, his big toes, his soul. Dude is in deep Kimche!
