Tyson and Holyfield convened with Oprah, and it was the perfect time for a heartfelt apology. But pride still holds Tyson back. He couldn't or wouldn't apologize for his cannibalistic impulse.

Tyson Now A Gentler Figure, Wiser And (Mostly) Humbled

By Rick Folstad

Sitting in front of TV cameras and facing a world still fascinated with him, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson wasn’t the tragedy we remember. There were no visible signs of the monster who threatened our children, bit off chunks of human flesh, went to prison for rape and was never more than a few wrong words away from going completely bonkers.

Tyson looked a little huskier than he did in his demolition days, but he’s been away from the ring for several years now, and though his fighting days are gone, his appetite apparently isn’t.

Appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show last  Friday, Tyson was there to meet with and shake the hand of former champ Evander Holyfield, who called the show after he saw Tyson make an earlier Winfrey appearance on Monday, Oct. 12, and talk about a life almost free of the inner rage that dominated him for so long.

On that first appearance on Oprah four days earlier, an emotional Tyson talked about his children (“I love my babies“), the mistakes he made, what his life was about.

“I’m afraid of fame because I know what fame can do to me,“ he said on Monday’s show. “I’m apprehensive about fame. I‘m very pragmatic. I‘ve allowed myself to fall in a lot of pitfalls. I’m from that world where there are no boundaries. Anything goes.”

Watching a film clip of himself as he got ready to enter the ring back in his fighting days, Tyson shook his head.

“That was my reality,“ he said. “I thought I was a god.“

Asked about the recent death of his 4-year-old daughter, Exodus, who was accidentally strangled by a treadmill cord in May, Tyson struggled with his words.

“She was my angel,“ he said, his voice breaking. “I don’t know (the circumstances of her death) and I don’t want to know, because if I know, then somebody is going to be to blame for it and then there is going to be a problem.“

Contrite and emotional without any signs of the rage that used to rule him, Tyson
said he’s “played bad movies in my head for the last time. That guy haunts me, that Mike Tyson guy, whoever the hell he was.“

On Friday’s show, before Holyfield came on stage, Winfrey asked Tyson how he stopped himself from going “into that dark place.“

It was hard for Tyson to find an answer.

“I’m not a bad guy,“ he said, growing silent while he seemed to search for a better answer. “My first response is violence, and I did it so well.“

When Holyfield came onto the show, the two fighters cordially shook hands.

Asked about his feelings toward Tyson, who bit off a chunk of  Holyfield’s ear in their famous 1997 heavyweight title fight, Holyfield said he was very angry when it happened, but he wasn’t angry very long.

“It was just part of life,“ he said. “Everyone has to go through something. Things happen for a reason. The most important thing is to forgive, and I forgave him.“

When asked by Winfrey if he ever apologized to Holyfield, Tyson said he did after he felt pressure from his corner and his camp.

“I apologized to him, but I didn’t feel the apology because I wasn’t sincere,“ he said. “I was more offended for apologizing because it was so insincere."

Afterwards, he said he just wanted to sit down some place and talk to Holyfield, clear the air, maybe try to explain his behavior. But he says he never got the chance.

“Every time I saw him after that, he seemed leery of me,“ Tyson said.

When Winfrey asked Tyson if he had something to say to Holyfield, Tyson turned and talked about how much he respected him and how beating him in the ring would have been like “conquering a giant.“ But the words “I’m sorry” never came up.

Holyfield said the main reason he wanted to come on the show was to let young people know how important it is to get along.

“If we can come together,” he said. “We know you can come together.“

RG - eating from a mango tree and as humble as he can be:  Great piece, Fightwriter Rick F. I knew that this piece was coming after some reader was all up in my grill wilding about the last piece about Holy on Oprah. As I had said, there was no beef between Holy and Mike. Holy, as he said, admired Mike in the amateurs. And Mike, as he said, didn't quite understand Holy because Holy was "a quiet country boy." But they were both on the loser squad trying for spots to the O Games. Holy made it by beating a Detriot thug named Ricky Womack, and cheered for Mike to make it. However, Mike lost to a Los Angeles thug named Henry Tillman. The whole world heard both fighters TALK about it on Oprah Show last Friday in the USA. Though, I personally know both pugilists and Oprah -- or "Gail" as I call her -- I had nothing to do with it. Karma is amazing, as is TSS Universe. The truth and nothing but the truth always come out hit the poser like a PacMan left cross. Holy and Mike both kayoed Tillman in the pros. Hillman and Womack both ended up back in jail for murder and manslaughter. Womack -- God Bless his soul -- later commit suicide after serving his time and failing at a boxing comeback. Hillman is planning to make a comeback, so he claims. Holla!

Isaiah:  Holyfield and Tyson will always be linked even long after they both pass from this world. I hope both men find the peace they're looking for. It's long past the point for me to try and preach for Holyfield to retire so let me just end this by saying both of these men are warriors who gave many entertaining nights, but even if you took their fights together away, Holyfield will still rank higher. The only elite guys Tyson ever beat were Larry Holmes and Mike Spinks. Holyfield has beaten former, or at the time current or future "TRUE" Heavyweight champions (that means NOT John Ruiz) in Buster Douglass, Riddick Bowe, Mike Moorer, Larry Holmes(yes I know Tyson beat Holmes better, but beating one guy better isn't enough) George Foreman, Hasim Rahman, etc. That easily trumps Tyson beating 2 men who were the TRUE Heavyweight Champion. Holyfield will always be superior to Tyson until the days they die.

d:  tyson only lost to holy after he had slipped big time in terms of skill. he was looking for a one punch ko already. a prime bobbing and weaving tyson would have destroyed a prime holyfield and i have the utmost repect for holyfield. even though they are similar in aqe tyson peaked and fell before his fights with both lewis and holy .

schweitzerman:  The main reason Holyfield came on was simply because he wants to remind people that he's still alive. Face it, who cares about Holyfield these days? The only reason Holyfield being on Oprah was such a big deal was because Tyson was going to be on the same stage. Holyfield needs to retire but sadly he can't do that until he's paid off his child support and by that time he should be in his sixties, have almost 20 losses and still believe he can be undisputed champion despite not being licensed to fight anywhere in America

kountedout:  why do you always try to make it seem as though you were right? go back an read my comment. i never said Holyfield hated Tyson. You claimed you knew Tillman. what is the truth that came out? you write these long boring comments about jibberish that makes no sense. you talk loud and say nothing. come on you wannabe cool guy who drove through the hood. now you think your cool. how old are you still talking like you are a 12 year old. slang is for little kids. grow up. no one said nothing about who holyfield fought to get to the olympics. yeah you know both tyson and holyfield like you was the first to fly to the moon as well right. i dont care what you said i know there was a beef between the two and holyfield has too much class to come on national tv and say he wont forgive tyson. you talk loud and say nothing
Monday Oct 19, 2009 11:09:10 PM
kountedout:  you need to wake up and get a life. everyone that was a leeching off of tyson is gone now. he has nothing now. holyfield has class and always carried himself with class. just because you drove into the hood 1 time dont mean that you know black jargon. im sure you invented the plane as well thats why you fly so many places. you are like a 2 page book, very easy to read

Isaiah@RadamG:  I've tried to stand by and be civil, but it seems like person after person finds a legit complaint against you. Once again, I can hold my tongue no longer. Too many good points, but I'm sure you'll say that I'm just being a kid trying to fit in with whoever disagrees with you. WRONG! What are you going to do? Let me guess. Cry to the editor again, little boy. Eating from a mango tree as humble as can be? Humble my foot? And what are you? The reincarnation of Dr. Suess?! RG, you are full of more S### then a sewer. You know Mike and Holyfield huh? Did you also invent the internet? Maybe, just maybe the Editors will stop their, for some reason, blind alliegence to you and punish you for your cowrardice, stupidity and arrogance! Let me guess. Did you make outerspace or the planets? Are you associated with every celebrity on the planet? Forget you and your FAKE A##. Sometimes I just have to say something to you coward. I wish someone would knock some sense into you. I'm sure you'll take that as a threat even though it isn't. Go ahead. Go run and cry and tell on me little boy. We prefer adults in here who speak the truth. Can I get some backup on this?!

EM:  STOP! NOW!
Monday Oct 19, 2009 11:34:59 PM
kountedout:  thank you isaiah, i was wondering when someone would step up and say something. i dont know what the problem is with him he seems to attack anyone who comes here new or who might know more then him. the editors wont say anything bout what he is doing. they only respond when we fire back at him.they can go back an read comments and see who started the argument. he is the only one that dont respect anyone here. yeah i think he invented the internet thats why hes allowed to get away with this. i know there are many others that want to say something on him. i agree he has to be disciplined or punished. he goes way past the boundaries of respect. we know he is FAKE thats why he wants attention like a little 12 year old. he talks loud and says nothing. i definitely back you up on this!

Ber:  Why doesn't Holyfield apologise for consistently headbutting Tyson in the two fights - and the ref owes Mike an apology also.

RG - still on TOP:  "Still moving" is the last words of a U.S Navy famed boxing coach. His name was Warrant Officer James Brown. He enjoys the games still, and watches from behind those Pearly Gates. Holla!

bill major:  whats the matter with you two? you both have alot of good stuff to say .why not bury this BS and come back to the boxing?
Tuesday Oct 20, 2009 08:00:21 AM
TC:  Editor Mike!! Yet again you refuse to publish my post. All I did was agree with Isaiah & kountedout! You need to deal with your sacred cow.

Robert Curtis:  It seems Holyfield's message about "getting along" has not impacted the TSS readers. Nobody is right or wrong about boxing all the time. Come on. It's not like we have to put up with each other in each other's living rooms. Let free speech be free on TSS, even when it has more rhyme than reason or more smack than savvy. Folks who take it too seriously take themselves too seriously. I can see Radam rubbing readers the wrong way, but the guy makes me laugh out loud more than his critics ever do. Y'all sound like a bunch of brats. Who do you think Editor Mike is? Your daddy? Waa waa waa. Now Mike is going to take us all out for ice cream, but only if we're good.
Tuesday Oct 20, 2009 11:44:48 AM
RIVERSIDE@KOUNTEDOUT AND ISAIAH:  hey guy's, i can smell the toilet overflowing into my office..L.O.L.
Tuesday Oct 20, 2009 12:31:20 PM
Robert Curtis:  Case in point. If the rest of you don't think the elaborately rendered post which precedes me isn't hilarious, then you obviously find no delight in the absurd. Go, RG. Such priceless comedy is wasted on second class minds. I'd give the rest you boys a good scolding, but Editor Mike promised to take me out to Burger King tonight and then out shopping for a bicycle.
Tuesday Oct 20, 2009 03:37:08 PM
Robert Curtis:  On the subject for once today, I'm glad Tyson has found effective coping skills. I think he said it himself, that he'd be dead in a year if he hadn't. Hard to believe, but people can change. It takes some people longer than others. George Foremen began as a bully and ended up a gentleman. Tyson may very well do the same.

the Roast:  I'm with Bobby C. Give peace a chance people. I dont take issue with everything I read that I dont agree with. Who has the time?
Tuesday Oct 20, 2009 08:27:35 PM
kountedout:  no one says anything to this guy until someone fires back at him, then you talk lets make peace, tell him to freeze on this ignorance. let him be childish with the ones who likes to hear that junk. its cool to be funny and have fun but he goes over board. most of us dont take issue with everything either but when someone points you out and comes at you with ridiculous jargon you have to try and ignore it but enough is enough. i still wonder if this guy is so much in the know that he says he is then how could someone who knows everyone completely miss the boat on the vitali vs arreola fight. anyone who followed boxing knew that arreola was over rated and not world class. i guess he was in the lab creating a vaccine for the swine flu.
Wednesday Oct 21, 2009 06:58:07 AM
straight right to RG:  A sometime reader of the threads here now finds you receiving a big dose of haterade...why you wonder? The humble man name dropping with the stars, boasting about endless globe trotting, regaling with your flamboyant prose. I won't hate you for knowing some famous people, having lots of cash to travel, or having a way with words, but you must know that playing humble while pumping up your "greatness" will rub many the wrong way.
Wednesday Oct 21, 2009 09:42:45 AM
joe:  People say mike tyson didnt fight better opponents than holyfield, but mike fought the best opponents at his peak that were available at the time,he didnt avoid any fighters at his peak!!

Left hook to kountedout.:  knountedout is a very immature and jealous sounding person with with his own issues of low self-esteem and failures. He is acting like he is in charge of the readers and writers. Radam is not doing anything to knountedout. I think that knountedout is upset because something he posted was exposed by Radam as not being true. Why is knountedout the only one calling that man childish? knountedout just keep trying to convince other of his illusions and hatred of a top contributor to this site. The editor, the writers and the readers and all but four kind of bigoted readers appear to be fine with Radam. Maybe kountedout hasn't been to too many places. Just go past what Radam posts.

Smiley C:  Now I know who kountedout is. He is like moth, which cannot stay away the flame. This person is no less than a guy who claimed to be a sparring partner of Marvelous Marvin Hagler. How is school? Fo' sure!

left hook to kountedout:  my bad kountedout, i have nothing but praise for your writing, you know boxing better than the ludicrous, scatterbrained, storyteller individual we all have been talking about, i'm surprise how he manages to be on this forum 24-7 whe he travel more than sec. of state clinton, he must have his personal jet and his private landing strip in his back yard in manhattan

Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods.
