Povetkin To Receive Shot At IBF Interim Title

***Povetkin to fight for IBF Interim Heavyweight Championship***

Russian star Alexander Povetkin (17-0, 12 KOs) will fight for the IBF Interim Heavyweight Championship, the IBF has confirmed. “That is great news for Alexander,” Sauerland Event General Manager Chris Meyer said. “He has been waiting for his title shot for such a long time. We are very happy that the IBF grants Alexander this chance.”

The 30-year-old Olympic gold medal winner has been waiting for his IBF title shot ever since beating Eddie Chambers, who is now the WBO mandatory challenger, in an elimination tournament in January 2008. A first showdown with IBF champ Wladimir Klitschko failed to materialise in December 2008 when Povetkin injured his ankle in practice. The IBF ordered Klitschko to defend his title against Povetkin before September 13, 2009. However, the Ukrainian champion opted to fight Ruslan Chagaev in June 2009 instead. He needed to undergo shoulder surgery afterwards and has been declared unfit to fight until the end of 2009. Since Klitschko´s latest injury significantly extends Povetkin´s waiting time yet again, the IBF ordered an interim title fight. “Finally, the waiting is over for Povetkin,” Meyer added. “He gets what he deserves – a world title fight in the near future. We are all tired of waiting for Klitschko.”

If Eddie Chambers does not want to fight Povetkin for the IBF Interim Title, Samuel Peter would be the next in line. “We are waiting to see who the opponent will be,” Meyer added. “We will then work out the date and the venue as soon as possible.”

The title shot means that Povetkin will not take a tune-up fight in Baltimore on October 16.

brownsugar:  Chambers has been quoted as saying that he'd hold his breath for a year to fight Klitscho,.. but all he wants is the title,.. so why not fight the remake version of Povetkin,.. remade by Teddy Atlas into an agressive come ahead bob and weaving boxer similar to the prototype,.. Tyson,.... at least I saw footage of Teddy showing Povetkin some of IRON Mikes moves,.. could be interesting... Povetkin is deserving of a shot...

Tyson Holyfield on Oprah!!!:  Wow. Povetkin's not ready. He's been a pro for what, 4 years?? I figured they would bring this guy along like Andre Ward and Ronald Hearns and give him a title shot in 15 years.

Isaiah:  Tell Povetkin to get in line. I don't care about this guy. Eddie Chambers has earned the shot in front of him. Wladmer better be ready.

Earl:  This guy has been fighting since 2005 and they want to give him a title shot?! WHAT! This guy is RAW and is 5 years away from being ready, maybe more. He should continue to work on things and fight 4-5 journeymen a year, then step up in class to mid-level type guys after another 15 to 20 fights. They'll ruin him by putting him in now. I'd like to see him in with Marcus Rhodes or Jeremy Bates and then, in 2014 or 2015, step it up with a Monte Barrett kind of guy for another 6-10 fights. This guy should be ready for a go at the strap in 2016 or 2017.

Gary Lewis:  Wow Earl, you like to take these guys along slowly. I wish boxing promoters would do the opposite and not protect guys and shield them and throw them in with bums to pad their record. What would beating Marcus Rhodes and Jeremy Bates for the next 5 years prove??? Sink or swim is my philosophy. Arreola did it against Klitschko and his career isn't over. It was a good barometer and he can bounce back and learn from the loss. Beating bums means nothing to me.

The Count:  IIsaiah, Earl, Povetkin already has beaten Chambers, a 12-round UD despite having the flu the week of the fight. He's also beaten some quality heavyweights in former champ Chris Byrd (TKO 11), Larry Donald (UD10) and Jason Estrada (UD10). Only one of his 17 opponents had a losing record and that guy, Willie Chapman, had 19 wins. The combined record of Povetkin's last six opponents is 172-15 and he beat all six. I think that puts him a notch above the rest.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
