Cotto Getting Ready In Florida; Arum Says Pacquiao's Trainer Gives Edge
By Rick Folstad
TAMPA - Interesting tattoos. They spread out across the arms and torso of Miguel Cotto like a creeping vine, growing upward, closer and closer to his cheek and chin, toward that crazy Mike Tyson look that Cotto might want to avoid.
When it’s jokingly suggested by a member of the media that Cotto doesn’t let the tattoo creep up onto his face ala Tyson, Cotto just grins. He’ll do what he wants, but I’m guessing the artwork won’t stretch past the collar line.
The tattoos have grown some since the last time Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs) was here training at the Fight Factory. That was this spring when he was getting ready to fight Joshua Clottey in June at Madison Square Garden. He won that fight, but it didn’t come easy. He won by split decision and received a bad cut over his eye from a head butt early in the fight. Any questions about his heart were answered.
So he and his growing tattoos and his young trainer, Joe Santiago, are back in Tampa, training for his fight with Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2) on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Cotto likes training in Tampa. There aren’t a lot of distractions here and the weather in October is hot and humid, kind of like it is back home in Puerto Rico.
“Puerto Rico is my country and that's where I live,” he said, talking with the media after a two-hour workout that included skip roping, bag work, a session on the focus mitts and some crunches. “But there are a lot of distractions when I’m there. That’s what I like best about Tampa, there are no distractions. I do two things when I’m here. I train and I rest. Train and rest.“
Cotto’s training regimen is a lesson in routine. Everything is planned, precise and consistent. And he seldom says a word. He just listens to his music and works the rope or the bag or the mitt. The last time we were here when he was getting ready for Clottey, he went through the same routine he went through for Pacquiao, again, hardly saying a word.
He doesn’t give out secrets.
Promoter Bob Arum, who promotes both Pacquiao and Cotto, was in town this week to see how the second half of his promotion was doing. Earlier this month, he was in the Philippines checking on Pacquiao, who is training in his home country intil later this month.
“I’m very, very careful not to favor one fighter over the other,“ Arum said as he watched Cotto train. “Right now, with Manny so far away, it makes it easier (not to show favoritism). I never interfere. I just want to see that they are both getting the best possible training.”
Arum might not have a favorite, but Pacquiao is a bigger draw right now than Cotto, and he’ll get a bigger piece of the pie.
“I take great pride in this fight,“ Arum said. “We have two guys who are going to make their biggest payday on Nov. 14. Pacquiao will make over $20 million and Cotto will make over $10 million. And I helped create that.“
Still not showing any favoritism, Arum said Pacquiao’s biggest advantage going into the fight was having trainer Freddie Roach in his corner.
“Manny is an offensive machine,” he said. “He blends in his defense in the best possible way. In essence, he turns himself into a magician in the ring. He can disappear while in plain sight.
“Manny is an explosive puncher, but he doesn’t have the ultimate power Miguel has. Miguel is the bigger guy, and Manny might be vulnerable to Miguel’s left hand to the body and the head. It’s how Manny reacts to those left hands that will be the story of the fight.”
Arum said there are no secrets about what each one brings into a fight.
“They both have histories,“ he said.
The two will be fighting for Cotto’s WBO welterweight title, though they’ve abandoned the 147-pound limit and agreed to a catch weight of 145 pounds.
Asked what he thought of the catch-weight, Cotto said if he thought he’d have trouble making 145 pounds, they wouldn’t have taken the fight.
“I weighed 146 when I fought Clottey,“ he said. “I’m in my best shape ever.”

Wow! Cotto is in deep kimche! Twenty-nine days to go, and all ain't well. Somebody has lost the boxing smell. And he is moving as slow as a snell. PTSD is in full effect! That Margarito bout made somebody tragical wreck. Camp Cotto is posing. There are flies on the walls and bugs on the medicine balls. The eye in the sky is a spy and doesn't lie. Manny by kayo in round four. Must I say more? Yup! In time! In the meantime, I'm gettting my laugh on. Holla!

THERE IS NO SPIES IN CAMP COTTO... we Boricuas know how to choose our friends. Cotto fooled everyone for years about his relation with Evangelista and not even a word came out until it exploded. So please don't send your bad vibes to our boy and team. We respect Pacquiao and Freddie, do the same with us. As a matter of fact I really hope everything is going as advertised in Manny's camp and his health is as is best when they fight because I DO WISH HIM WELL. Like I said before, it is a matter of luck that will decide the fight. If Cotto gives a big combo knockdown to Manny and finish him, then the fight is over. On the contrary, if Manny manages to stay out of trouble for 12 rounds, then it will be him winning the fight. But the logic tells me Manny can't avoid to engage and it will be KO imposing his offensive.

The fight will be determined in the first round, we will know if Cotto can take Pacman's punch and we will know if Pacman is strong enough to take Cotto power. I want Cotto to win because I actually thinks he deserves it after getting hit in the face with bricks for 11 rounds.

This fight is a tough one to call. I learned after the De La Hoya fight that I shouldn't pick against Pacquiao. Cotto is probably not the same fighter he was pre-Margarito, but he's still hits harder than anyone Manny has faced to date. It remains to be seen how well Pacquiao takes Cotto's punches. Pacquiao doesn't hit as hard as Margarito, but his speed is a great equalizer. It's the punch you don't see that takes you out. Still, I think Cotto wins a close decision in an entertaining bout.

I'm hearing it again people...this is the toughest test for Pac so far. I hope we don't play that game where most of you who pick Cotto to win don't come back and come up with lame ass excuses. Pac is going to win. He's more focus on strengthening in training camp and movement as well. Pac will have an answer to whatever Cotto has in store for him. They brought in Castillo who is not very effective as he used to but still possess that brawler style of fighting. Shawn Porter will mainly be the speed factor as he imitates Cotto boxing ability. Roach is a genius!

Have you guys heard? Floyd is contemplating of fighting a 19 year old prospect by the name of Saul Alvarez from Mexico. I thought this was just rumors but I read it from 3-4 different articles. GBP is yet again trying to rob you from your money and make you believe that this will be a good fight. This would be funny as hell if Floyd accepts to fight this kid. I know this is off topic but I'm the biggest critic of his so I have to spill this one out to ya'll. Whatcha think of your boy now RG? Trying to imitate the GOAT right?

Floyd is a joke. I'm not surprised that he'd be fighting a novice fighter. And I'm not surprised that GBP is behind it. I agree with u wholeheartedly, it will be a sound victory for Pacman. And once again people will come up with excuses like, "Margarito took everything out of Cotto." Some genuine fans will be shocked and finally admit to how great Manny is. I don't understand why people have such a tough time believing that one of the greatest fighters can exist in their time. We should consider it a blessing to be able to witness such greatness. Instead they have to hate on him. Don't get it. Little by little though, one victory after another, Pacman is proving more and more experts wrong. The reports from his training camp right now says it all. He's working harder than ever, against tougher sparring partners than Cotto. The results are right there.

Cotto has always come off as a morose,.. aloof,.. ultra serious intraverted guy,.. no problem,... those kind of dudes often make for great warriors,.. and for the last 7 or 8 years,.. Cotto has been renoun as one of the most competitive boxers of the last decade,.. I'm just amazed that " I just fight for the Company Cotto" only gets 50% of what Pac makes,.. still he's set for life even if he falls short in this fight,.. but seriously,.. why couldn't he have held out for 15 million,...12.5 even??? he's half the fight and the reason people want to see Pacman make history,.. he's got every Rican on the east coast behind him,.. I think his pay should have been far more equitable,.. Yeah I know Pacs got a whole country,... but still,.. just ain't fair,.. anyway I hope Cotto can find a safe way to cut weight and come in healthy,.. but if he were to come in at 147,.. I'd give him 4-3 odds against the vicsiouly agressive pacman...

Re: "Catchweights have become a Pacquiao bad habit."
Nothing could be further from the truth. Pacquiao has never fought at a catchweight before. He fought De La Hoya at the welterweight limit and Hatton at the Englishman's best fighting weight. I'm personally opposed to catchweights but I honestly think that 145 won't be a problem for Cotto.
It will be a competitive fight; may the best man win.

I feel sorry for his fans because it's them who go to the extreme to defend their fighter. @brownsugar, I think this is a no-brainer it's going to be an exciting fight. I just hope it lasts atleast 4 rounds and Cotto coming healthy and ryhydrated properly to 155-160. If this goes the full twelve rounds with both guys bloodied then I expect them to be roadkill. If the winner comes out unscathe then expect him to be ready for Mosley or Floyd. They've had their shares of battles and it will eventually catch up to them.

Wow! B-Sug, that money situation is not really that unequal. Cotto's money increases with the amount of butts in seats and in front of those tubes and flat screens. Manny has a guarantee big cut, but not a whole lot of the extra benefits that Miguel has. That is how da hurt bitnezz rolls. Miguel has a bigger percentage of the moola action if it gets ready large. He gambled with percentages for diz and daz over a guarantee. Hit up Las Vegas Boxing Commission, WBO pay sanctioning of title bouts and Top Rank Promotions about how the Cotto-Pacquiao pay works out. And that will give you a peep into how the bargaining and paying work. Holla!

Cotto will take a page right out of PBF's book. He will come in at 146 or 147 and pay the penalty, then the real penalty will be paid by Pac man.
This is exactly as it should be. If Pac is to try and claim this belt, then let him do it at true Welter.
I have been burned every time I bet against Pac (Diaz and Hatton) but did nicely with him against DLH. I am not a Pac man hater. I rather like him. I also think the world of Freddie Roach.
The only reason I would not be a 100% pacman devotee if he wins this fight is the fact that I firmly believe in "the fix".
There is way more money in 'boxing' if Pac wins, and so it goes. For this reason, I cannot imagine Cotto winning by decision. It will either be Cotto by TKO, Pac by TKO, or Pac by Decision. (and if it is, it will be at least as controversial as the 2005 decision his little brother Bobby got against the kid from El Salvador)
I agree with one of the earlier comments that Cotto deserves this win after taking 11 rounds of loaded head shots from Margachito. I was sitting in the 3rd ringside row of that fight, and made a lot of money betting AM by TKO (but I had no idea he had loaded up his gloves.) those who say Cotto is a shadow of his pre margarito self are wrong. He has stepped past it.
I can hardly wait, but just hope I can actually be there instead of watching on PPV.

Yes, COTTO IS THE STRONGER GUY. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. The question is: Can he deliver that power in his fists on time? If he is behind by one tenth of a second he will be in big trouble in getting hit first before he could land his own punches. And yes, Cotto is also the bigger guy but Pacquiao has time and again proven his power and speed can make up for his thinner frame. The outcome of this fight is as simple as ABC. In the 4th round it will be Pacquiao by a devastatating KO.

I've actually heard of Saul Alvarez. His record is decieving and from what I can tell, he's just not that good. Certainly not good enough to test Floyd Mayweather. You know what'd be funny? I'll tell you all. It'd be great if this fight happened and NOBODY cared. Floyd? Floyd who? Meanwhile... fans are enthralled at the sight of Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto trading bombs in a fight closing in on 2 million PPV buys while the Mayweather name is never heard from again. Wow. Manny Pacquiao makes a fight with Miguel Cotto and Mayweather can't fight Mosley, or wait for Cotto or Pacquiao, or Margarito or Paul Williams or Clottey, or even Collazo or Berto or Quintana? Wow. One month to go... and fight fans everywhere are reading coffee grinds and tea leaves in every nosebleed and every tattoo. As the spin machine spin, all eyes are on this fight. The slightest whisper echoes. The smallest rumor towers. I will make a prediction. This fight will be the largest PPV audience since the Golden Boy himself retired. The cast assembled for this show has no B actors. Everyone is in this to win. The Bobfather. Miguel Cotto. Manny Pacqiuao. And everyone is a winner. The fans first and foremost. Everyone has a stake. None are small. Arum wants to use PPV numbers to be greater than Mayweather's. Cotto wants to redeem tarnished glory. Manny wants history. And we want great fights. And a great fight we will get. I, for one, am so excited and so anxious I can hear my own breath. I can feel the silence in my own voice as if the words 'seconds out' had just been spoken. Anticipation... is an understatement. When the bell rings.... and the wheel of fortunes turn.... drama itself will be redefined. Boxing fans, Cotto fans, Pacquiao fans and whole countries will stop. Completely. To watch whether the bigger man can hit and hurt the smaller. You cannot hurt what you cannot hit. So the first question will be if.... not when. Manny's speed and movement is dazzling. Whether it dazzles Cotto remains to be seen. When... and there will be a when...Cotto does connect, we will get the answer to our second question. How does Manny respond. If he responds with movement, footwork and lightning fast counters.... I would venture to say that Cotto does not finish the fight. He, nor any other fighter for that matter, does not like when he connects and his opponent absorbs and keeps coming. That, I have always contended, was his demise against Margarito. Not Margarito's punches. But the confidence that was drained by the failure of his punches to hurt Antonio. The rest is history. Cotto does not want to be the hunter for 12 rounds . He never has. Nor will he. Length is not his strength. He will need his strength to shorten this fight. It is his size and power....those same attributes accorded to Hatton and Oscar....that must sustain him. Cotto will look to hurt Manny early. The as often as necessary to slow him and soften. Manny will need to bring his A game. Nothing else will do. David, you can bet , brought his newest tightest sling-shot when he faced Goliath. Manny can do no less. He must be prepared. Conditioned for war. But he must not make it one. He can beat Cotto two ways. By T/KO or decision. He'll need to keep his head. Cotto will make this a brawl if he can. No holds barred. When he takes a shot, move and fire back. He can not ....and should not...fight Cotto's fight. He must check his Machismo. Stick to his strategy. And box. If a KO comes, it comes. Second prediction: Pacquiao by TKO. Late. pc

If cotto won't get seriously hurt by Pacman, he would rather campaign in the light middleweight division in his future fights . His obesity would be very hard to control by the time he reaches age 30. This will always go against him should he continue fighting in the welterweight. Pacman will give him a KO as a wake-up call.

I have one further prediction. There will be One loser in this fight. His name... Floyd Mayweather. He will lose his PPV title. He will lose his negotiating power. He will lose his moniker 'money'. For all who question this, note the purse expectations for Manny Pacqiuao above. In fact, look at Cotto's numbers. The latter even being more telling. $10 million. That's $10 million for Miguel Cotto. The same as Floyd made in his last fight. And.... take a good look at Manny's numbers. 20 million large. That's right. $20,000,000 US. Floyd likes numbers. He should look at these. These are the purses awarded great fighters willing to fight great fights. The beauty of math is that it is exact. Numbers are what they are. They speak for themselves. And never lie. So I will say no more. pc

"Floyd is contemplating of fighting a 19 year old prospect by the name of Saul Alvarez from Mexico." This could work as "this guy has 0 losses, unlike mosley, and he has his chance, unlike mosley , who missed his chance". Mosley called out scareweather, but he wants to keep fooling public into watching his "bum fighters". They might as well install a reality series "pro vs. joe", about having up and coming fighters have a "shot at Floyd Mayweather, b/c American is built on opportunities, and they get a real shot at the p4p title", this could work better than a tune up fight or god forbid a mega fight agst a worthy opponent. "cant wait for this exiting match"thanks bob for this fight....well... my personal view for this fight will be PAC with UD or a TKO between rounds 11-12. look at barera-pac 1...or hoya-pac...most likely that will happen to cotto-pac fight..........gudluck to both fighters...

A LOT of DUDES are SAYING PAC isnt that great PAC
PAC is a natural FEATHER W. and COTTO is a natural WELTER W.
some says PAC should fight COTTO in his ORIGINAL weight at 147lbs..
to make it fair to COTTO..
HOW aBOUT COTTO FIGHT PAC IN FEATHER WEIGHT (PACs natural weight) CAN HE DO THAT?? to be FAIR to PAC too?NO HE CANT...but PAC can move up and take the challenge MAKES SENSE in a DIFFERENT way right?!
IM just saying dont blame if PAC wants the FIGHT at 145lbs....OK HATERS?!

Great post TopNotch Fe'Roz. Where you been Caveman? Glad to see you back, a reality show should be called "Who wants to beat the Champ?" LMAO...or what about "Dancing with the Chump." If this is just another one of his moves to get more attention then it's working. But his critics are growing by the minute.

Yo pacsage! Yeah man... I been busy with work this week... i get up early as FUDGE for one of my jobs so I decided to cut out my evening internet time to be able to wake up with some energy in the morning. It sucks, I haven't been on TSS since trashing Juanma from last Saturday. Yeah man, Floyd Scareweather is truly the biggest chicken, next move: when he FINALLY does do a mega fight, he'll do ONE, TWO at most, meanwhile hyping himself up and the crowd.... so when and if he DOES win, it'l be such a collective catharsis pple will swear he's the greatest of all time for fighting two fighters, whereas any welter who's worth talking about as fought 4-5 GOOD or GREAT welters recently... clottey has fought baldomir, judah (OMG! floyd's entire resume!), margarito, and cotto. Williams has fought quintana twice, and margarito Cotto has fought quintana, judah, mosley, margarito and clottey. judah has fought cotto, mayweather, and clottey and almost fought mosley. mosley has fought de la hoya, cotto, margarito, and is set to fight berto. mayweather has only fought judah and baldomir at 147, hatton doesn't count, just like urango berto wouldnt' count. useless. i would like collazo to get into the mix. I'd like marquez to fight at lightweight and beat valero (he shoulda stopped moving up when he realized Juan Diaz was the bigger man at 135). Scareweather's resume is as flat as an Olsen twin. Holler! you got it dude! thumbs up.

all questions lead to if pacquiao will be able to handle cotto's power? the answer is, yes! no doubt. he is sparring with a light middle weight knock out artist, shawn porter who koed all his opponents and yet never koed pacman in sparring session. $1000 price is still in roach pocket offered to sparring partners who can ko pacquiao.

Many cotto fans is betting on Miguel's advantage on power and size.True he might be bigger and stronger and punch harder but they admit also that Pacquiao's speed is a great equalizer. Some are waiting if Pac can take Cotto's punches. We all know that Pac current sparmate is biggger guy than Cotto,Shawn porter, who is a legit jr. middleweight.Pac camps is directly addressing the issue by making him get adjusted to a bigger guy with hard powerful punches. On the otherside,Cotto's camp fired the fighter who mimic Pac best.He was the one giving Cotto the speed and volume punching ala Pacman.WHY? my guest is as good as yours Cotto fans. But to me Cotto's training is not as effective as Pac's training and this will obviously show come fight time.If anybody gets surprised at all, i think that will be Cotto.Pac is already used to opponent who is fast and hits hard(thank you Porter) while Cotto didnt get the quality opponent in his sparring sessions. These are the factors that will lead to a Cotto defeat!!!

Manny by KO in 2nd round, and or a TKO in 3rd round. Watch out. Big body plus hard punch over slow speed equals Knockdown in a Flash Pac Power Exhibition come fight nyt Nov. 14!

This is a response to the guy 'Brownsugar'
Cotto will only me making 50 percent of what Pac's total purse because of several factors
One: popularity based on historical and previous ticket sales and PPV sales from previous fights.
Two: Number of championship belts and status. Pacquiao has 6 belts, while Cotto have 2
Third: Media attention, Endorsements from corporations can determine also popularity of the fighter, and thus increases glitters on the boxers' name that will boosts importance.
Pac has NIKE while Cotto has Ecko.
IF you type on Google search the the first four letters P,A,C,Q, You will be automatically suggested with....... What again??

This fight will not be about Cotto`s power , because he will not go out headhunting in that ring, Cotto will try to outbox Pacquiao, that`s for sure. Manny is quicker but Cotto is a better boxer.

, To Pacquiao #1 fan Hard to believe pacquiao great? I'm a boxer myself, my question to you is he never fought top contenders all his fights were eather past there prime or in a catch weight losing a lot of power. There was Nate Campbell,Margarito and Shane Mosley in the line up for the P4P king. Here's something he wanted Cotto at 143 and wanted his belt for that weight. What's not hard to believe Cotto will knock Pacquiao flat. Shawn Porter was kicking his ass and that's sparing. Think about that!!!

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
