Froch getting yelled at by Dirrell at press conference. The Brit hasn't been as warmly embraced as Hatton or Calzaghe. Is it his cockiness? The economy? (photo by SE)

Froch Doesn't Get Hatton/Calzaghe Love

By Ronan Keenan

The lonely nature of prizefighting is not confined to the ring. Customarily, a successful fighter will find an unlimited supply of sycophants, while a ring-worn pug will struggle to find an audience for his laments.

Yet achievements do not always generate fandom, as Britain’s only current world titlist, Carl Froch will attest. Despite owning a glistening 25-0 (20 KO) record, the super middleweight has failed to secure a mainstream UK television deal for Saturday’s clash with the unbeaten American Andre Dirrell. The contest, which will mark the first fight in Showtime’s innovative Super Six tournament, has failed to attract the interest of major British broadcasters and will only be available on an obscure pay-per-view channel.

Stateside, respected fightgame observers are hoping that Showtime’s gamble on creating a round-robin competition among some of the world’s premier 168-pounders will revolutionize the manner in which the sport’s elite boxers compete for supremacy. But despite the presence of Froch and two other highly-touted European fighters, Arthur Abraham and Mikkel Kessler, UK broadcasters have rejected the enterprise, which could see the British fighter become a big name on the other side of the Atlantic.

Froch’s showdown with Dirrell will take place in his hometown of Nottingham, England at the Trent FM arena, with recent ticket sales pointing to a 7,000 capacity attendance.  But being popular in a small locality doesn’t translate to national stardom. Incongruously, Froch arguably enjoyed greater UK exposure before he burst onto the American boxing scene earlier this year.

Soon after claiming a bronze medal at the 2001 world amateur championships, Froch entered the paid ranks on the UK’s most watched network, the BBC. The channel is available to every television viewer in the nation, giving Froch, who turned pro at the relatively advanced age of 25, a welcome early-career boost. But in 2005 the BBC ended its association with prizefighting, forcing Froch to the subscription network Sky Sports, which is available to roughly 15% of the populace.

But boxing in the country was on a strong upward trend with two of Sky’s resident fighters, Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton, forcing their way into the realms of mainstream sport. The exposure helped Froch’s fame grow steadily in Nottingham and last year his status peaked when his WBC title-winning effort against Jean Pascal was screened live at primetime on the terrestrial ITV channel. The fight was an exciting back-and-forth battle that attracted over five million viewers.

With the careers of Calzaghe and Hatton heading toward conclusion, Froch was well-positioned to nudge into the limelight. But TV executives had different plans and passed on his title defence against Jermain Taylor in Connecticut last April. Froch’s dramatic twelfth round victory will rank as one of the most impressive performances by a British sportsman on American soil, but the BBC deemed the contest worthy of just highlights 24 hours after the event.

The decision by ITV to pass on Froch’s fights with Taylor and Dirrell was part of the network’s plan to cut out its coverage of the sport in general and not a direct dismissal of Froch. The consensus conclusion is that in tight economic circumstances, sport executives have a tough time convincing their superiors that money should be devoted to an activity that revolves around the pursuit of violence. Other mainstream sports have an easier time garnering investment.

“Boxing has various problems when it comes to TV,” says Ron Lewis, a sports writer at the London Times and author of the Boxing Blog on Timesonline.co.uk. “The first one is that our major channels, BBC and ITV, have invested too much of their budget into football. Football is always the safe option for television, because it is the biggest sport in the country, is covered to death in the papers and it has core national and team support. Because of this it is also popular with advertising agencies.”

Individual fighters, such as Calzaghe and Hatton, can become celebrities by building huge fanbases in their locality that ultimately capture the attention of major corporate sponsors. But positive attention on single entities does not morph into acceptance for the whole sport.

Unfortunately for Froch, his birthplace of Nottingham is dwarfed in size by Hatton’s hometown of Manchester and the Welsh territory that supported Calzaghe. And while Hatton and Calzaghe were very much perceived as “regular guys”, Froch has maintained a swagger that has not endeared him to many devoted boxing followers.

Inside the ring the 32-year-old tends to keeps his arms low, with his self-assurance out-weighing the need to keep a high guard. Moreover, in direct contrast to the workmanlike approaches of Calzaghe and Hatton, Froch has a tendency to bait opponents during a fight and occasionally toy with inferior competition. He has also engaged in a long-running war of words with Calzaghe in which he once labelled the Welshman “stupid”.

But it is inconclusive whether such actions have contributed to Froch’s recent rejection by TV networks.

“I don’t think it has much to do with his personality or his hometown,” argues Tris Dixon of the British publication Boxing News. “He has come through in the shadow of Hatton and Calzaghe, without doubt. He generally has not got the credit he deserves but I don’t think you can blame him for that nor can you pinpoint one particular factor that has prevented him becoming a star like Hatton and Calzaghe.”

Just two weeks ago there was no UK television deal signed for Froch-Dirrell, but a new subscription channel called Primetime, which will launch on Thursday, has agreed to screen the contest on pay-per-view. The upstart channel will also offer all the other bouts in the Super Six tournament.

Primetime have promised that they are committed to boxing for the long-term, but Froch must be hoping that the unknown network will be his temporary home.

“The reality is that Hatton and particularly Calzaghe took years to build up the support and media profile they eventually received,” adds Ron Lewis. “A win against Dirrell would go a long way to making Froch a recognizable figure.”

Indeed, Saturday’s fight promises to be an intriguing high-class contest. Victory for Froch will undoubtedly aid his burgeoning profile on a global scale, but not necessarily in his homeland.

rudy:  I think The Matrix is going to make sure he doesnt get to a Hatton/CalzOttke level

#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  The reason for Froch not getting the love he expects is that he has yet to get a notable win. Hatton was embraced after he defeated Kotzya Tzyu and Calzaghe getting by the legend Bernard Hopkins. If Froch is able to be the winner of this tourney you'll see a lot of fans jumping on his bandwagon. There are a lot of big names on this tourney and if he succeeds he might be even be bigger than Hatton/Calzaghe.

GOAT:  You heard it from me first. Dirrell is going to knock Froch out! Froch has limited skills and he is easy to hit, he swings wide slow punches and he has no jab. Yes he did knock JT out,but JT was whippin his arse the whole fight before burning out. Dirrell will make asy work of Froch and JT will beat King Arthur.

brownsugar:  Taylor has a 78 to 72 inch reach advantage... Dirrell has a 75 reach to 76 inches for Froch,... if both guys are focused ,.. a win is not only possible,.. but entirely probable for the U.S. boxers,.... I'm picking the hometown boys at the risk of having to visit Mister Lee's famous "House of Crow" Ristorante,.. renoun for leaving the feathers on,.... most of all I'm very excited to see two competitive fights on the same night,.. in the deep and talent rich supermiddleweight division,.. what ever happens,.. I'm just happy to attend...

Frank Z@ brownsugar:  I'll pick the hometown boys as well, if you gotta have to visit the house of crow i'll be there with you. dirrell and taylor both have reach advantages, and both fight to utilize their reach, i hope dirrell doesn't try to get too cute with a dude who hits like froch, and works frochs body. i can defintiely see his feints and upperbody movement confusing froch, taylor seems primed and ready to go, focusing on specifically making sure he can go hard for 12 rounds. that's basically been his main achilles in the past, his technique's not the best, but he's got a good jab and strong fast hands. if he can show up fit he can absolutely beat abraham.

Fe'Roz :  I don't know what crow tastes like in Berlin, Copenhagen, or Nottingham.... newer quite frankly do I care to. For that matter, I actually don't care for the idea of the taste at all. But I think there is one certainty in a tournament filled with uncertainty: everyone is going to eat some. These matches are filled with more variables than there are constants. And these fighters have been viewed more frequently by their native audience..... and conversely less so and/or not at all by their opponents. That in itself a mouthful of unknowns. It is also one of the reasons that this tournament holds so much potential to be if not spectacular... and at least full of surprises. Starting from fight one between JT and Abraham, there are far more questions than there are answers. JT has fought over a handful of the most elite fighters in the world. He has also lost brutally to at least two. We know about his stamina.... or his lack thereof. But we cannot say for sure if his skill level is so for superior to both Abraham... and his subsequent opponents... that he may in fact be being totally underestimated. It is a big if. A smart betting man would probably bet that he cannot finish a fight with Arthur Abraham. But then again, we have never seen Arthur Abraham flight at 168 against an elite and experienced fighter. Forget Miranda. Sure, he showed unbelievable heart and grit. But he was fighting Edison Miranda.... who we all now know was a puncher waiting to get punched. So King Arthur's resume leaves a lot of unanswered questions. As does his size. As Radam likes to say, don't believe everything you read. Use your eyes. Jermaine is much taller than Arthur Abraham. So, given all that I know and don't know about these two fighters, I actually think this one is an even match going in. And I am willing to enjoy a crow appetizer by choosing JT to surprise all of us. Now I want my crow prepared in Silver Springs in the safe kitchen of Mr. Lee. I suspect however that the hometown cooking in Berlin might have the effect on the outcome of this fight. JT needs to stop Arthur Abraham. Anything less, and I'm ready to taste the bony bird. As for Froch, what's there to love. He's strong, cocky, and tenacious. He also holds his hands arrogantly and foolishly so low that any boxers/puncher willing to step into his wheelhouse has a better than fantastic chance to clock him... like JT. We know that if you do knock him down.... you better KHTFO. Otherwise he will be there when the bell rings at the end of the 12th round. Now, regarding AndreDirrell, he is the great unknown. We have seen him and we know that he has skills. We have not seen them fight an elite fighter at this level. We have not seen and tested by this kind of power. We have not seen whether he can maintain his strategy technique and composure.... at this level. So, unless he is the surprise of surprises, I see Froch winning in his own hometown. Enough said. Mr. Lee, please prepare the crow in his many different styles as possible. I'm ready for my share. pc

the Roast:  I dont know what to think about Dirrell. The most recognizable name on his resume is Anthony Hanshaw. This is a big step up for this kid. Is he ready? At least Froch has wins over JT and Pascal. I dont think Dirrell's Howard Davis Jr style is gonna win over those judges is a hostile environment. I'll take Froch by close but UD.

Isaiah:  I to have picked Froch to win this one. My prediction is just slightly different picking Froch for a late round, (probaly 11th) to dismantle overrated Dirrell. Of course, I have no love for Froch though, with his dissrespect to the great Joe Calzaghe who is a superior fighter. Don't worry though. Froch will get his, just not this time. Life is good the Roast. You have an ironic name because you will not be eating any crow on this prediction. Don't BOIL over this one to long because I sure won't GRILL you about it. I don't want to FRY my brain by getting BAKED on this subject. Just tyring to HAM it up, but I should just stop these jokes COLD TURKEY, but I wouldn't want to be accused of CHICKENING out. That would be CORNY so allow me to PEPPER this site with my best and not CHEW this over too much longer. Man, who was the cat talking about Dominoes veggie pizza earlier? That's sounds good man. Whoever it was, order me one too man. I'll pay you back. LOL! Alright, let the fatboy comments commence. I'm having too much fun to care.

Slapfest:  I thought Khan was also a world champion from britain!?!? Froch will lose!

GOAT:  I actually got Ward winning the whole thing. It's something about him, I think he maybe one of those special fighters that come around once a decade or so. I watched his last couple of fights and I am very impressed with his skills, speed, defense, and his heart. Ward and Dirrell in the finals with Ward winning it.

#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  I'm with GOAT picking Ward to winning the finals but if he performs poorly coming into the finals I may change my mind. Ward is the more complete fighter in this tourney I think.

Anony:  I'M TELLING YOU.... A HALF CASE OF BEERS AND MY DOMINO'S THIN LAYER VEGGIE PIZZA will do fine on Saturday watching Froch the Frog going down and Abraham winning over Taylor in a spectacular fight. Taylor may loose but he is always entertaining. Last fight against the Frogh was a sad story but he will do fine in the Super Six. Abraham is a great fighter, have power and all the cojones to fight even with that broken jaw. His brother is the one who is not allowed in the States, Colombia and/or Puerto Rico. Promoters and Showtime should keep him out of the ring. We all should remember he kicked Edison Miranda while lying on the ring. I wish Miranda gets to him in the future and smash his head for that.

brownsugar:  did anybody see Dirrell getting in Frochs face during their press conference?,.. he was really stirring the hornets nest,.. showed absolutely no respect against the chiseled faced Brit,... Dirrell is going in HOT!!!,..All systems are GO,..... a confident young up and comer against a proven winner,.. it doesn't get any better,.. while Abraham and Taylor looked like they were taking communion on the first Sabbath of the month,... total mutual respect,... tentions are flaring,.. anticipation mounting,.. and adrenalin pumping,.. all 4 of these guys have so much pride and motivation,.. I can feel it,... half a hemisphere away,.. like Fe'Roz said,.. this may not go as adversized,.. Saturday will truly be a special night,.. at the Fights...I might follow Anony's lead and go for a case,.. but I think I'll be drinking a dark pilsner German Ale,.. or maybe I'll go british with some Guiness to celebrate the international flavor,.. and I want achovies, extra cheese,.. and sliced tomatoes on my pizza,.. pc........

MisterLee:  I'm a fan of Froch. I have him comin in second. really guys , look more closely. Froch has two modes, bruiser and brawler, and skillful and underrated boxer. When he's boxing, he has decent head movements, he blocks hooks with his extended fore arms and elbows like an interception, and he can counter at times. He has a decent ""wrecking" jab or straight, his straight right fires like a cannon. He effectively outboxed two amazing and quick boxers in pascal, and taylor in rounds 6-12 (except in a few rounds where taylor tried to steal the round by shoe shining in the last 12 or 15 seconds). Froch is pretty good at maintaining and setting distance. I find his "arrogance" more confidence than cockiness, and if there is some arrogance, lots of prize fighters have/had it..... sugar ray leonard, hagler, mosley seemed to have some earlier in his career, Froch is MUCH better than pple think, just watch even the pascal fight, pascal is in theory a better boxer than Taylor, he's faster, moves on his feet better, jabs really well... and froch overwhelmed him with combinations the first 20 seconds. Froch also has good timing, so expect Froch to make quick work of this""Yankee doodle" within 10 rounds. Holler1

MisterLee:  Crap, i just wrote a bunch of stuff and got deleted. Essentially I said that the media for some reason expects black fighters to be "cocky, brash, and trashtalking" and caucasian fighters to be "humble, workingman, and quiet." Mayweather is a perfect example of cardboard cut out number 1, and Mosley is the perfect counter example and notice who gets the most exposure? Yes, the one who meets everyone's stereotypes and meet the expectations of the public and the media. Bhop also, and dawson, berto glen johnson, pascal, and paul williams are guys who have more mild personalities, that don't fit the "brash, hip hop, trash talk" persona and as a result don't get enough media exposure despite their accomplishments in the ring. Same with white fighters, calzaghe was an f'n prick in takin away from bhop's victory and pavlik's loss by sayin "look! pavlik is not at my level, and see how bhop, a man that I CONQUERED beat him so easily, shows how good I really am!" and hatton can be a real prick sometimes too, talking trash, and bein cocky. However, the media have portrayed these "workingmen" as just head down and hard working guys with humility and no ego, which is not tru, but the media have pushed these images on them and pavlik. Word to the wise, pavlik is arrogant as hell and totally not your expected "steel mill" salary worker. and also, froch is NOT your average working class humble dude, but he's muli-dimensional like everyone else, and demonizing as just "some cocky" dude b/c he's a white Englishmen who should be readin shakespeare and drinking tea as opposed to having an ego, a concept that "we Americans have invented", and that pple like that jerk Roy Jones promotes (musta forgot!), is simply our rebellion to fighters not meeting our one-dimensional cardboard expectations of fighters, while the business man Mayweather rakes in the millions making up this fake persona to sell horrible fights to the unsuspecting public. It's a cheap game, and unlike the negotiating table, Mayweather beat the public and the media to the punch. Look how many wasted articles that F-lo and even Woods and Borges wasted on that Marquez fight, all of it just hyped up that non-sense. Okay, i'll get back into my place as a crap-poster and stop calling out my idols. Holler! Let fighters be fighters and pple be pple, all of them are imperfect in some way, and none of them will ever live up to our expectations as these media created images.... oh no Mayweather was caught saying a nice thing! Mosley being a nice guy all these years finally calls out a fighter after 15 years of boxing, he's a jerk (even tho RJJ has said "hell" and "ass" and other ill words on the air).... oh no! Froch talks some trash and fights with his hands low, run for the stables! Oh, another nba star kicks a chair, yells at the referee, beats up a fan, and knocks up a woman and gets paid millions doing it, what a hero! holler!
Thursday Oct 15, 2009 10:23:01 PM
brownsugar:  Froch is the betting favorite,.. and there's certainly nothing wrong with "Talking a Good Fight",.. after all it's the hurt business.. personally I think,.. arrogance,.. foul attitudes,.. and bullie types make the sport that much more interesting,...I just know Dirrell vs Froch is going to be a barn burner,.. these guys have 100% real anomosity going in,... I'm going to have to vote against Mister Lee,.. he's probably warming up the crow now...
Thursday Oct 15, 2009 10:33:40 PM
MisterLee @ b-sug:  The crow is ready to serve... froch exposes dirrell as inexpereinced, abraham exposes taylor and he gases out with big macs flying in the ring. Holler! abraham gonna intro him to the autobahn, froch gonna show dirrell da' Globe theater. holler!

Smoke:  Crow will be served tartar and washed down with a warm Stag. I am going to buck the odds. I have a gut feeling that The Matrix will prevail. I believe Andre D will mature in this fight and take some serious licks, but will end up with his arms raised in a late round TKO.

the Roast:  Hey Caveman, did I ever tell you about the time I met Kelly Pavlik? He was not so arrogant. Seemed kinda normal to me. I met Antwon Echols once. He was short.

Is It Only Money That Matters?
"Who refuses to take a drug test worth $40 million?" For the American psyche, money is everything. It transcends what is right or what is wrong. For a certain amount of money, I'll do anything. Manny is Filipino, and he cannot fathom that kind of thinking. Is that what capitalism should be? I can't understand why $40 million should dictate your personality. Simply put, Pacquiao has his own dignity and refuses to be manipulated into taking $40M and giving his (butt) to anyone who wants it." ---TSS reader "Tony" informs readers of a possible cultural difference which causes certain peoples to interpret Pacquiao's refusal to cater to Mayweather's testing demands (photo by Chris Cozzone)
