Caballero Keeps Pressing For JuanMa Fight
“IF YOU’RE THE MAN YOU SAY YOU ARE, TELL YOUR MANAGER
AND PROMOTER THAT YOU WON’T FIGHT ANYONE BUT ME NEXT.”
HOLLYWOOD, FL, October 13 – After WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez barely survived a 12 round war with huge underdog Rogers Mtagwa Saturday night in New York City, it was no surprise that Lopez’ team began scurrying for the door when it came to the proposed unification bout with WBA / IBF champion Celestino Caballero.
“I’m not surprised at all,” said a disappointed and angry Caballero. “Everyone knows that Lopez and his team don’t want any part of me, and him almost getting knocked out by an old man with 12 losses just confirms that he will continue to fight opponents who either can’t punch, can’t move, or can’t be stronger than he is.”
Most boxing observers expected that the highly-anticipated unification bout would be signed and announced following the Lopez-Mtagwa match, but Lopez’ life and death struggle in defense of his title has made Bob Arum and Top Rank, Lopez’ promoters, look for less threatening opposition, and Arum has even claimed that Caballero turned down an offer for the fight, something Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing, says is a lie.
“We were never even presented an offer for the fight,” said Margules. “I want this fight, Celestino wants this fight, and the fans want this fight, so we are willing to do whatever it takes to make it. But I know after Saturday night, the odds of getting this fight done have dwindled considerably.”
Meanwhile, Caballero hopes one last plea to Lopez will turn the tide and give fans a 122-pound superfight in 2010.
“JuanMa, I saw in Primera Hora that you said that you want to fight me, but that your promoters don’t want it,” said Caballero. “I’ll take you at your word on that, but if that’s true, you need to let Top Rank know that you’re the champion and you’re the boss. You’re the one in the ring doing the fighting, so if you’re the man you say you are, tell your manager and promoter that you won’t fight anyone but me next. If you do, I promise I won’t punish you for 12 rounds; I’ll just take you out in five or less.”

Hey everybody! Don't be so quick to put Juanma down man! Lopez had a bad night and and even fight, but I have faith he will do the right thing and take a rematch soon. Lopez still has a bright future in the sport. Remeber, I'm pretty sure even Manny Pacquiao had a tuneup fight inbetween his rematch with Erik Morales. Lopez ain't scared. Dag on. Can he have a few more days to think out his next move? Is that too much to ask?

You are right about reaching conclusions to quickly Isaiah. And in a perfect world, juanma has every reason and right to wait to make decisions as to who he will fight. And yes, he deserves a tuneup....that is, of course, if you are counting Longchi and Mtagwa as real contenders. But life is not fair and boxing , life life, presents us all with unforeseen and unwanted challenges. Often at the wrong time. right now (and before this fight) Caballero was calling his name. actually calling him names. If he fails to fight him, in the eyes of many, he will not get a pass. It will be Strike One. With all eyes watching closely to see how he finishes his at at

JuanMa is one fight away from being scratched off the future superstar list. He's been exposed first by the great Gerry Penalosa (a smaller man), he showed that JuanMa's highly touted skill & power were not all that great (for 12 rounds of boxing). Now everybody knows how to fight him.

Caballero is much smarter that he appears to be,.. he's known for some time that Juanma cannot effectively make 122 and deliver a good performance... he knows he's catching Juanma in a period a growth,.. where Juanma must move up,.. or suffer a humiliating loss,...like hatton who's drained at junior welter but not in his case he's not skilled enough to move up...boxer do this all the time or either they catch guys at the end of thier career.

@feroz,Caballero is good but Lopez can make more money by fighting Gamboa,Vazquez,or Marquez. They wouldnt be fights to complain about either.

it's already a moot point,.. Juanma fights Luevano in January on a double header co-headlining with Gamboa against Filipino contender Conception,.. if Juanma wins the title,.. he'll face Rios to try to unify the 2 featherweight titles,.. and a match will be made with Gamboa in late 2010,.. all this is being orchestrated by Arum who pulls the strings on all the fighters mentioned...in his grand plan to stage a Gamboa vs Juanma superfight of the century,.. by then Juanma will have acclimated to the feather weight division,.. while Caballero taunts him from the outside looking in,.. much like that guy,.. who was it?? Witter?? who taunted Hatton mercilessly for a decade...before being demoted by Bradley and Alexander

I BELIEVE THIS GUY IS GOING TO GET THE BEATING OF HIS LIFE... after Juanma's score the first knockdown on him, Juanma will KTFO of the ring this guy with a furious uppercut which will make the TIME magazine portrait of the year. Caballero flying off the ring into the crowd. hehehehe. He deserves it!!!! What a mouth!!!! Is he from Grand Rapids, Michigan??? Doesn't have Panamanian manners.

Caba would punish Juanma like he did Molitar...Arums not gonna cash in on Juanma yet cuz he knows that if Juanma loses bad he'll be ruined and turn into Cristian Mijares he's gonna milk him first...Trinidads got a lot of nerve sayin' that Juanma is the one to take his place as the next great puerto rican champion...I have more respect for Cotto then I have for either of them.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
