Israel Vazquez & Juanma Compete For Fans Saturday

By David A. Avila

Mexico’s Israel Vazquez or Puerto Rico’s Juan Manuel Lopez, take your pick.

One a current pound for pound champion returning to the ring wars, and the other a quick-rising power-punching mini giant headed for stardom.

While Vazquez (43-4, 31 KOs) fights Colombia’s Angel Priolo (30-7, 20 KOs) at the Nokia Theater in L.A., Lopez (26-0, 24 KOs) tangles with Tanzania’s Rogers Mtagwa (26-12-2, 18 KOs) at the theater venue on Madison Square Garden. Vazquez will be televised on HBO and Lopez on pay-per-view.

Already they’re dueling.

Should they both emerge victorious, one can easily imagine their roads finally crossing in the very near future. It’s enough to make boxing fans salivate.

Vazquez returns to the ring after suffering a detached retina suffered in his three fights with fellow Mexico City warrior Rafael Marquez. It’s taken 18 months for doctors to finally allow him to train and re-enter the world of prizefighting. When he last fought, he was considered one of the top five prizefighters at any weight division.

“I think I still have the guts and skills to perform like always,” said Vazquez (43-4, 31 KOs). “I’m hungry to show what I can do.”

Meanwhile, 3,000 miles to the east, Puerto Rico’s Lopez also has much to prove but only a few highly regarded fighters prowling in the 122-pound weight division like Celestino Caballero. But the power-punching Boricua would love to skip the formalities of fighting unknown contenders and champions and relishes a clash with Vazquez. It’s a match that bristles with can’t miss success.

Vazquez or Lopez, Mexican versus Puerto Rican, power versus power, its all there ready to be stirred up and served to the boxing public like one spicy dish.

“Without a doubt I’m going to be rooting for him to win,” said Lopez who is more commonly known as Juanma. “I do look forward to fighting Vazquez in the future. That’s one guy I really look forward to fighting.”

It’s simple mathematics to understand why Juanma would anxiously seek a fight with one of the best prizefighters in the world. If you beat a fighter considered one of the elite then a win can instantly propel the winner to stardom. Vazquez provides that.

“He’s a very good fighter,” said Vazquez of Lopez. “It would be an honor.”

It’s a battle that never seems to stop between the two Latin populaces. Puerto Rico versus Mexico has provided some of the best boxing rivalries in the last 30 years. Think Oscar De La Hoya versus Felix Trinidad. That clash sent both fighters toward greater glory in the boxing annals than any of their previous fights.

First, Vazquez must defeat Colombia’s hard-hitting Priolo.

Vazquez’s last three fights against Rafael Marquez finished a three-fight series that is now considered among the greatest in a long history of boxing trilogies. But it may not be over.

“Yes, I would consider a fourth fight with Marquez,” said Vazquez, who defeated Marquez in their last two encounters. “We’re both warriors. I would love to fight him again.”

That’s just Vazquez’s way. He loves the challenge. Forget that his right eye suffered a detached retina in his last Marquez fight, or that he suffered a horribly broken nose in the first fight and a gash that streamed too much blood for the faint of heart in the second fight. The fighter known as “El Magnifico” is like a matador, he loves danger.

“That’s just the way Israel is,” says Frank Espinoza who manages Vazquez.

Puerto Rico’s Lopez realizes that a victory over a fighter such as Vazquez would pull more weight than all of his previous 26 wins. He’s a very smart fighter.

“Whoever is next is next,” said Lopez about his future that may include a date with Cuba’s Yuri Gamboa who is also on the same fight card.

Deep down inside he really wants only Vazquez. And soon.

“The opportunities are out there. I’m not a rookie any more, but I’m not a veteran,” Lopez said. “I just have to take my time and make it right.”

Hardcore boxing fans are pulling for both Vazquez and Lopez. They know a clash between these two would be similar to Mexico’s Salvador Sanchez and Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Gomez in 1981.

Trainer Rudy Perez has been working on Vazquez’s defense to cut down on the injuries. He’ll need it against Lopez when and if they clash.

“It’s just little technical things so that he won’t get hit as much,” said Perez who previously trained Marco Antonio Barrera. “He’ll still be the same fighter but with better defense.”

On Saturday, Vazquez hopes to prove to the world that he’s still worthy of being considered one of the top three fighters in the world at any weight.

“I’m hungry and anxious to show my fans that I’m back,” said Vazquez.

Tickets start at $25 and are still available at Nokia Theater. (800) 745-3000.

Ontario Friday fight card

It’s only an eight-round fight but it could determine the future of two junior welterweights on the brink of cracking the top 20.

Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera of Riverside faces Cleotis “Mookie” Pendarvis in the semi-main event on Friday at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario.

Steadily Herrera (12-0, 6 KOs) has been utilizing his superb defensive prowess to perfection against solid opposition in the past two years.

Pendarvis (9-1-2, 3 KOs) is the opposite. Blessed with startling speed the southpaw boxer first disappointed then rebounded with recent wins. He’s also served as a primary sparring partner for Ricky Hatton when the British fighter clashed with Manny Pacquiao.

One of these fighters will move on quickly with a victory. Can Herrera’s superior defense and consistent jab beat the quick-moving angle giving Pendarvis. It’s easy to imagine the winner moving in to top 10 territory very soon.

The main event features Mexico’s Juan Carlos Burgos (22-0, 15 KOs) against Yogli Herrera (22-9, 15 KOs) in a featherweight contest. For tickets and information (714) 935-0900.

Anony :  YES!!!! PUERTO RICO WANT REVENGE from Salvador Sánchez and Mexico. That fight against Wilfredo Gomez is the most hurting one and it is about time the score gets even. Israel Vazquez y Juanma López will be like those two fighting again with flags in their trunks, national anthems in a stadium and all that. Imagine COTTO vs. MARGACHEATO and JUANMA vs. VAZQUEZ in the eve of the Puertorican parade? Hey Mr. Bob Arum... you want my money? MAKE IT BIG AND CHARGE ME $60 FOR THAT CARD. I'M WILLING TO PAY IT!!!
Wednesday Oct 7, 2009 04:54:12 AM
Anony:  Correction:::: MAKE IT BETTER THAN BIG, MAKE IT HISTORICAL!!! meaning, what's going to be Bob Arum's Legacy if he doesn't make the biggest show on the sport???? Second to Golden Boy and Don King???? Somebody call Bob, tell him to give the fans what they really want.

agent_russ:  yeah, this article was trully right...lets go on!!! BOB ARUM...hear your avid fans of great great boxing...dont let this people dump you at the back of DON KING... prove to them that you among other greats boxing promoters is the numero uno...yeah make it puerto ricans and mehicanos fought each other...and at the end of it...let there be only PHILIPPINES!!! was left standing alive....." IS THERE NO ONE ELSE?'....IS THERE NO ONE ELSE?... - pinoy achilles....

Trejo:  I prefer to see Vasquez vs Lopez, I no longer have interest to see Marquez vs Vasquez, shit we've seen them fight three times in a row. Let them prove themselves against other elite opponents to see if they have anything left, and if they win then they can fight again. I get the sense they want to fight one another again just to cash out.

AFN:  I'll be chosing Vasquez welcome back fight, mainly cos I'm too skint to cough up the PPV money and my broadband is toooo slllooowwwww at the moment to pirate the fight. EL TOONOY

Steve the hater:  As Mexican i like Vazquez over Juan Manuel, but Vasquez has been trhu a lot of wars and Juan is fresh so i said JuanMa by late KO, if he is who he claims to be, if not ,El Magnifico all the way.

Jorge :  Vazquez vs Lopez is a great classic matchup that needs to happen. Nevertheless their is so much talent at 122lbs to just focus on this fight. How about a super six tourney at 122lbs With 1.Israel Vazquez (Mexico) 2.Juan Manuel Marquez (Puerto Rico) w/ WBO title at stake 3.Celestine Caballero (Panama) w/ IBF & WBA title at stake 4.Rafael Marquez (Mexico) 5.Toshiaki Nishioka (Japan) w/ WBC title at stake 6.Steve Molitor (Canada) Or you can replace some of those fighters with fighters who are willing to move up in weight like the winner of Joseph Agbeko vs. Yonnhy Perez and Abner Mares Sooooo many great fights... I cant wait to see any of these come to fruition... =)

MisterLee:  Bueno! We need this fight! 2010 baby... pppllllease!!! And make it a BAD main event please! The heart says vasquez, so i'm gonna go with El Magnifico for this one. Come on guys, even tho there was cheating involved, cotto vs. margarito was just as epic. And speaking of, now that marg is gone and stuff, despite my not being a fan of him, i would still like to see how he'd fight now that the pressure is on him, and can he still produce the string of knockouts, or is he just a journeyman with a chin? Cotto marg too, THE LEGITIMATE would be interesting, i still swear that cotto marg II, cotto would have b eat his ARSE by taking him to the body, moving in different ways, and by throwing more power punches than flashy poppy straight punches with no leverage and improving his defense. Despite being a Cotto critic now, I was once a huge fan of this guy, and i'd pay money to see him fight mosley again or marg, or heck even clottey. Andre Ward 2009!

Fe'Roz :  Vasquez is one fight away from being a shadow of himself after all the wars he has fought and damage he has endured. The only issue is when not if. That 'when' could be his next fight or the one after...or the one after that.. but it's coming. One night soon he will walk into the ring and the same Vasquez will not. I have huge respect for him ..but fighting the Arce/Corrales way....the way of the Gladiator...is for a limited run only. I think we've seen Israel's best days. Juanma would get a great name on his CV; Israel a great paycheck. My concern is that a man so courageous ends his career in a fight so dangerous.
Wednesday Oct 7, 2009 08:32:47 PM
Fe'Roz @ Mister Lee:  Antonio Margarito/Miguel Angel Cotto II. Seriously, is there anybody in Mexico or Puerto Rico....or any boxing fan for that matter....that would not pay to see that fight. Holla!
Wednesday Oct 7, 2009 08:43:09 PM
MisterLee @ Fe'roz:  I'll finally say it, despite all the things i said about marg, BRING back marg, and scarp mayweather! Marg really makes the welterweight division interesting, not mayweather, and his fights are cheaper to promote and negotiate too! Scrap scareweather, bring back margacheato! This is bad, when i prefer a pseudo-convicted felon over a former p4p king. Holler! down with scareweather, or in mosleys' case: Down goes scareweather off a mosley right hook. Holler!!!
Wednesday Oct 7, 2009 10:23:25 PM
Isaiah@TSSVETS/Fe"Roz/and/MisterLee:  Man! I would pay big money to see a Cotto/Margarito rematch! F- Mayweather man. There's no one in boxing history I can think of who deserved to have the P4P title less then that fake. Man! Cotto/Margarito 2 will littlerally rock the house! All you have to do is check those gloves, no, correction... DOUBLE check those bad boys with a fine pick comb. I mean X-RAY those suckers like halloween candy and then let's rock! To Fe'Roz, simply put, is there anyone in the world who wouldn't go to great lengths to see AWESOMENESS such as that! To MisterLee, you and I both know Mayweather will not fight Mosley in the present here regardless of who called out who back in the day. Look at Mayweather's face after the Marquez fight when Mosley steps into the ring. NUFF SAID!
Wednesday Oct 7, 2009 10:48:51 PM
Fe'Roz :  The fight should take place in the same place as the first one. In the place where what you do stays right there. In Las Vegas. The US of A. The Land of Second Chances. Where you are Innocent until proven guilty. Nobody here....or anywhere for that matter....can show one iota of proof of a crime committed by Margarito against Cotto. Not 'Rush Borges'. Not Cotto. Not Uncle Evangelista. Not Joe Santiago. Not any commission. No One. You want a spectacle beyond spectacles. This is the fight. I say 'Free Tony'. And let the best man win.
Wednesday Oct 7, 2009 11:06:55 PM
Anony @ Bob Arum:  EXACTLY WHAT I'M SAYING... ONE CARD... FOUR HEROES (well, 3 heroes and one cheater) but..... Cotto vs. Margarito as the main event and then Juanma vs. Israel Vázquez. Instead of charging two times (for separate fights) $35.00, do it for $60.00 (one fight) in the garden on the eve of Puertorican parade. Who would not pay $60.00 for that??? That could paralyze mexico - new york - and puerto rico for sure. Not including every boxing fan around the world.... I'M SURE IT WILL SELL MORE THAN THE TWO FIGHTS SEPARATE. ARUM GETS RICH AND LEAVES THE LEGACY OF MAKING THE FIRST REAL MEGA CARD OF THE CENTURY.

Saul:  Magnifico all the way baby!! I'm going to this one live tomorrow, anybody else??

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
