Can Unsung JT Usurp King Arthur's Crown?
By Phil Woolever
UPSET CITY - On paper, heading into the upcoming Showtime super-middleweight tournament, former 160-pound champion "King" Arthur Abraham, 30-0 (24), has to be considered one of the favorites to progress into the finals set for 2010.
As the fighter in the tourney with the most recent losses, the only fighter to be knocked out, and the man with the most losses overall, Jermain Taylor, 28-3-1, is considered by many observers to be the weakest link of the Super Six World Boxing Classic bunch.
Don't be surprised if Taylor doesn't get the message and sets the series on it's ear October 17th at the O2 World arena in Berlin.
Granted, Taylor should logically be at least a 2-1 underdog based on recent form, and he isn't the type of bet you should rush to make by any means.
Still, something about the situation indicates Arthur's applecart is ripe for the tipping.
Maybe it was the day and night publicity photos that showed a grinning Arthur standing outside the gigantic, still brand new looking structure with a grin on his mug as if he'd already sent Taylor packing back to the States.
"I can't wait to fight Taylor," said Arthur at a press conference in his adopted hometown that seemed more like a premature coronation, "I have always wanted to fight here in front of a sold out crowd."
Maybe it was the statement from O2 Managing Director Detlef Kornett that sounded like the record book page had already been written, "This will mark the beginning of many big fights with King Arthur at 02 World."
Mostly though, it was a night in February 2005 and another in November '08.
The first took place at Staples Center in LA, when Taylor stopped Daniel Edouard in three rounds, providing clues that he was fully capable of going on to defeat Bernard Hopkins, as Taylor did later that year, the first of two disputed but undeniably impressive victories.
The second potentially indicative evening took place in Bamberg, Germany when Arthur stopped Raul Marquez after six sloppy but hard fought sessions.
Taylor has never since looked as good as he did against Edouard, since becoming a champion Arthur has never looked as vulnerable as he did in the opening moments against Marquez.
Maybe neither man will ever look that way again, but either return to such form is far from impossible.
For Taylor, win is a three letter word, spelled j-a-b.
When Taylor stopped a much fresher Marquez in June of '04, each man employed much the same jabbing tactics but Taylor looked light years quicker and stronger.
Listed at 5'11 with a 74 inch reach, Taylor actually has only around an inch or so more height and a couple inch reach advantage, but even in recent losses to Kelly Pavlik and Carl Froch he has shown superior hand speed than Abraham.
Taylor remains a relative long shot to be in one of the corners when the bell rings for the contest to determine the tournament
winner, but by no means does that he won't pull a surprise along the way.
The man from Little Rock who would be "king" only has to turn back the clock a few years and stick stick stick for 36 minutes or less.
Admittedly that's much easier said than done, but if Taylor can use his longer, stronger jab for an entire fight and stay out of Abraham's way in the manner Marquez managed for just a few frames, Taylor could disappoint what looks to be a packed O2 arena of German fans in Berlin.
With tickets starting at only around twenty American bucks, the sellout with over 15,000 Abraham fans is very likely.
Not so an already too taken for granted outcome.
Arthur may very well find out that in this scenario, the first cut is the deepest indeed.

good assessment,.. and I agree,.. this is not a walkover,... Abraham likes to walks his opponents down behind earmuffs while expending very little energy,.. then he explodes with counter bombs every now and then when his opponents get used to him just standing there,...(and they've already wasted 50 punches against his gloves)... he does the same thing every fight,. he picks his moments of attack very well,.. but can be predictable,.. watch some of AA's fights on youtube,.. the ones who went the distance,.. and those guys were a long shot from being world beaters,...AA couldn't touch em'.....he won but won ugly,...... if Taylor lands a good hook on the point of his chin,.. and puts some stress on those Titanium screws holding his jaw together,... it could change the tide of the fight,...easier said than done,.. I'm looking for a drama filled contest,.. I'm looking for Taylor to put it all together this time,... or go out on his shield trying... no prediction.....

I pick Abraham by knockout. His chin is better than Jermain Taylor''s and I don't think he'll lose any power at supermiddle. Jermain will be at his best such as he was in the second Kelly Pavlik fight, but Taylor will fold in the late rounds such as the Carl Froch fight for example. I officially make this site's first reader prediction with King Arthur being to big and strong for Taylor and scoring a knockout in the 10th. If someone's going to beat Abraham, it's going to be Mikkel Kessler.

If Taylor doesn't get it done early, he doesn't win fights anymore. Even a guy who's as hittable as Froch managed to weather the storm and wear him down. Abraham has the same granite-like chin as Froch, better defense and KO-power in both hands. I have to agree with Isaiah in picking Abraham and Kessler as faves in this tournament. Kessler's piston jab-right cross combo, and solid defense, has proved enough to defeat all fighters except Joe C.

..."if Taylor can use his longer, stronger jab for an entire fight and stay out of Abraham's way..." - That's the problem. Jermain doesn't really stick to this, or any, tactic particularly well. Abraham is clearly slower than JT, but punches consistently, accurately, heavily, and without losing focus. He beats quick fighters the way Hagler did (that's the only comparison to the Marvelous one I'll make). What Froch did well, Abraham does better, with better mechanics and rhythm, not to mention his proven ability to stay focused under adversity. JT is an honorable fighter - but one who will always be brought down by the gap between his athleticism and his lack of focus on a game plan.

Never say never, but I really don't see how Taylor can win this fight. His hand speed is certainly better than Abraham's, but we also know of Taylor's tendency to fade as fights go on. I think he would have to get business done early, but we also know that Abraham takes a great punch. I'm not really sure what happened to Taylor; maybe he was moved along too quickly. He still has a lot of amateurish bad habits, like going straight back along the ropes, keeping his left hand too low, and forgetting to use his jab. Excellent athlete, but average fighter. If Abraham is focused, I like him by late round stoppage or UD.

Come on guys, you guys ever seen Froch vs. Pascal? He boxed beautifully when he decided to use his head movement, jab and straight left, and build angles/combinations. He did this agst JT, tho it's harder to see, b/c half the time he decided to be a Marg of the supermiddleweight division, but the guy can box. Pascal had handspeed slickness and angles/good boxing ability,a nd he's now a curiserweight champion, no light heavyweight. ALmost as impressive as dawson beating adamek (i think both guys handing these two guys their first career loss), who later became cruiserweight champion. Holler!

I've seen 7 of Abraham's fights, and done some fairly extensive research of his resume'. At 160 he was the very definition of "paper titlist." After 10 title defenses, Miranda is still the best fighter AA ever faced. Jermain, even with his losses, if the very definition of "champion." His last nine fights were against current or recent world titlists. If JT loses to Arthur "the can killer" Abraham, he needs to retire immediately.

one thing is certain,..and Boo said it right,..AA has never been in the ring with someone of Taylors calibur,.. and Taylor is not finished yet,.. every fight he's been in has been close,.. this one will have plenty of drama too,..Taylors been in nothing but big fights for the last 5years,.. AA cannot say the same,...he might win but it will anything but easy

To AA batteries' defense, he was ready to take on pavlik, but not vice versa. In addition, miranda did give him some 60-40 i'll whoops yo' A$$ (rjj style) in the first fight, with a gift decision, also known as a texan decision, or puerto rican day parade (hehe). Miranda was deducted 7-9 points for that fight, 3-5 of those without a prior warning. Ridiculous! Anyway, AA is another "current" or world titlist that will really lay the smack down on Taylor. AA vs. Froch will be hellacious if they fight. that's FOY written all over. Wards' gonna box kessler's ears off. We gonna have to interview the floor, b/c that's where Kessler's ears gonna be! You heard it here primarily, holler back XX chromosone holders, if ya' knowattamean! :) Tss rules!

AA MIGHT, and I MEAN MIGHT, get past JT but to call him a favorite is crazy. His style does not fit to win this tournament. I.E. Do you honestly think he can win fighting like that against Dirrell and Ward if he fights them. Those guys are not stand in front of you come forward fighters. AA hasn't faced anything but those come forward and throw punch fighters. And he just blocks those, then flurries, soooo predictable. If he doesn't increase his offense, which I doubt he will, he has no chance. But neither him or Taylor will go far.

I want to pick Taylor but I won't . He's got better skills but doesn't have the desire in my opinion. This might be the time I don't pick'em and he wins. He needs to cut the cable off and fight like he lives in the woods and hunts to eat. Until I see him fight like a man possessed or fight like somebody tried to rape his wife I aint picking him. I'll be rooting for him though. Dueces

I fear for Taylor. He could be king of the four rounders but by round seven or eight things will turn out badly. He needs to watch this tournanet from the safety of the audience.

The same thing he does with 12 round fights because by round six or seven you can see the tide turning so a 15 rounder would be the same. King of the four rounders JT.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
