Jones has been saying that he wasn't effective against Calzaghe because he was holding his hands up too high. Does he believe that, Borges wonders, or is he seriously deluding himself?

Roy Jones Jr. Now Fighting Like A Senior

By Ron Borges

It’s hard to be sure who is more deluded these days, Roy Jones, Jr. or his father, Roy Jones, Sr. One thing is sure though. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

Saturday night the 40-year-old Jones will fight former super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi for reasons that are difficult to fathom. One is going nowhere and the other is following his lead, so if there is a point to this fight it is well hidden from view.

The fight is of such little importance that they couldn’t find a cable network to buy it and hence are trying to sell it themselves on pay-per-view. Don’t be in a rush to order it. There’s little chance the phone lines will be swamped on Fight Night.

Yet Jones announced recently that he has finally figured out why he was knocked cold by Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson and bloodied and beaten up by Joe Calzaghe and it had nothing to do with the fact he now is qualified to fight for the AARP title as well as the WBC’s.

“I was holding my hands up by my face, in a defensive mode,’’ Jones (53-5, 39 KO) said sounding amazed that this was the case. “I needed to get back to being Roy Jones with my hands at my side, acting cocky and throwing punches from all angles. Only problem I have is it may add 10 years to my career and I don’t want that.’’

Neither does most of the boxing world, not that he’s noticed.

Insulated by a cocoon of handlers and misinformers, Jones seldom hears the truth and sees it even less frequently. In his world, it’s still 2003 and he’s still the first former middleweight champion in 102 years to win a portion of the heavyweight title. He’s still Super Roy, not Aged Roy.

Since then much has changed for Jones however, but not in his mind or in that of his father, who will be back in his corner Saturday night and has been with him throughout his training camp in California, PA. alongside his long-time trainer Alton Merkerson.

Father looks at son and sees the kid he raised to be the best boxer in the world. Not so long ago he saw an aging fighter beginning to slip but that was before he was re-admitted into the inner circle. From that vantage point he sees a different guy. A rejuvenated guy. A guy who never should have lost to anybody.

“Roy Jones, Jr. should have never lost to Joe Calzaghe,’’ father said about son. “I don’t want to take anything away from Joe (just before he, of course, began to) but Roy fought out of his element.

“He didn’t do the things he was known for. You know you don’t take snow skis to the desert.’’

Good point, I guess.

Say what they will, Roy Jones, Jr. lost those fights because he’s nearly Roy Jones, senior. He was carrying his hands high in those fights because he was getting hit in the face if he didn’t and he was not getting hit in the face because his hands were high. He was getting hit in the face because there was nothing he could do to stop it.

Jones was a fighter who lived off his reflexes and his creativity. Those gifts, plus superb conditioning, made him a middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight champion. They made him the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world for a number of years. They helped him earn millions of dollars and allowed him to develop a side act as an HBO analyst.

Now they are gone, as happens to everyone including even Sugar Ray Robinson. What is left is a guy who had best fight with his hands high because if he doesn’t he’ll end up cut and battered and on the defensive, just like he was against Calzaghe, or worse, he’ll end up on his back, which is where Tarver and Johnson put him.

Might Lacy do the same? That’s unlikely because the 32-year-old former 168-pound title holder is more shot than Jones and even when he wasn’t he would have been no match for him.

Where Jones was agile and creative, Lacy was plodding and predictable. He could punch but to land the kind of shot that can turn things his way Jones will have to cooperate. Of course, if Jones intends to fight with his hands down as if he was still 25 he will be cooperating, which is the only thing that could make this event remotely interesting.

Lacy (25-2, 17 KO) has predicted a knockout, insisting that Jones will not hear the last bell. Sadly, he already hasn’t. That bell tolled the night Calzaghe slapped him silly, slashing open his eye and beating him by a landslide after Calzaghe first had to get up off the canvas in the first round following a flash knockdown.

That he did said more about how far Jones has fallen than it did about the height to which Calzaghe had risen. Saturday night it seems likely Jones will avoid a repeat of that fate because Lacy was never the force some tried to say he was in his prime.

The larger question is do Jones and his father really believe the things they are saying? If not they can probably run this scam a while longer, fighting opponents on the edge of the game without having to take much risk, which was always one of Jones’ specialties.

But if they do, they are cruising for a bruising. Unfortunately for Roy Jones, Jr. he’s the only one who will feel them when that time comes.

MisterLee:  Wow, is Jones fighting on the undercard of Julaton vs. Jeffries for certain! It'll be an opening bout, followed by an exciting Andrade fight, and then leading up to the main event Cintron will get a title shot, and chris john pulls out of another fight. Oh yeah, and ortiz fights berto at welterweight for a title shot, and if not, khan will fight malinaggi. holla!

GOAT:  Man, these so called boxing writers need to stop criticizing fighters. As long as Roy fights other fighters around his age and experience level it's fine. If he fought Chad Dawson on someone like that, then I would have a problem because he would probably get hurt, but the Lacy's, calzaghe's hopkin's of the world are fine to fight. If the writer doesn't want to see the fight, well don't look at it!

rbk:  To their credit, Jones and Lacy have actually done a decent job in trying to sell this thing but lets not kid ourselves. We have a faded legend desperate to remain in the spotlight and an irrelevant has-been that is trying to resurrect his finished career. Embarrassingly pathetic, really.

ali:  It's sad to here writers talk about a all-time great this way but that his opinion and he has a right to express it. I wounder if Ron wrote some of those same things about a all time great that was one of his favorites that my have fought too long.

john:  im really sick of proplr haten on roy jones jr, ron why do you hate just because you write bull and jones makes people fell like they can accomplish anything at any age and do what they love and you sit and write bull.

Robert Curtis:  Haha. NOT. Life is hard enough on old fighters, Ronbo, without you dropping more abuse on them. Wasn't long ago you was knocking Commander Vander just before he stood up to the giant Russian poet Valuev and got the decision stolen from him in broad daylight. Young or old, fighters have so much courage. The older ones are even braver, because healing is so much further uphill once you outlive Jesus's immortal 33. Let's put a little sugar on our tongue before we talk about them. Don't patronize and soft-pedal, Ron. But don't abuse either. We know you love the game as much we all do. But ease up on the elder abuse. Keep the love and the game together.

Radam G, a most humble PacManite wondering how many PPV buyouts will this fool-ya bout will get:  Wow! You guys are such softies. Superfightwriter Ron B isn't dissing Superman Roy Jones Jr, he is just spittin' about Captain Hook Roy Jones Jr. Now, you guy must admit that Roy has become a bit pathetic and comical. He's not really that delusional. He is just talkin' smack to convince his diehard fans to let go of their hard-earned money easily for him to keep earning pocket change, because of what he use to be. A sucka is born every minute, and they are known for remininising and romanticizing. Roy reminds me of a high-price used car salesman. A used car salesman will really put on his best sucker-youism -- if that is a word -- to get you to buy that junky clunker. He'll have you thinking it is as good as before. As long as you guys pay, Roy will continue to play. And I don't blame him. Pocket change is all right. Release those suckas of their MOOLA, Roy! You have gone from Superman to Duperman. Duping da dopes! Holla!

Ben O'Connor:  what a strange fight! the loser gets nothing and the winner gets nothing!!! i think they should fight out a draw and have a re-match hahahaha. nice article ron. i understand that jones wont fight top calibre opposition cos he will get tuned up, so whats the point!! go hit a bag in a few public work outs ron!! they dont hit back either!!! as for lacy, rarely have i seen a fighter age after one fight! calzaghe beat the soul out of jeff. james kirkland reminds me very much of lacy before the calzaghe beef and i have to say i think he will promise much and never really deliver, think he is a beast but massively overratted!

Tom:  Asmeaningless as this fight may be, I would like to see it. I would even consider paying a nominal sum.. say $10. But where the hell is it? I expect the same problem with the Haye/Valuev fight. Garbage perhaps but can those of us who would like to watch it do so? It seems that the goal is to kill boxing altogether. They try to sell us garbage and idiots like me who are dumb enough to watch it can't!!
Friday Aug 14, 2009 06:12:52 AM
Matthew:  This article could be written about any boxer not named Tunney, Marciano, Hagler, or Calzaghe (there may be a few others). Just instert your favorite name. Sadly, great fighters are always the last to know when their time is up. Part of what makes them great is their defiance and their ability to prove people wrong. It's also what makes them hang on too long. If Jones wanted to get out on top, he should have quit after the Ruiz fight, but we all knew that wasn't going to happen. Realistically, he should have hung 'em up after Glen Johnson kayoed him. The sad thing is, he'll probably beat Lacy and fight on.

Master Snake:  Ben O'Connor, for your information Kirkland is in jail on weapons charges while on probation and will likely be locked down for at least two more years. Aside from that, a rather sad weekend for boxing. Anyone with enough spare change in their pocket and the idle time to watch Hook City already drools on themself in between doses of medication. And it is really sad that the gorgeous Ana Julaton will likely get hurt by something that looks the leprechaun from the movies with cornrows growing out of the sides of its small forehead.

killron:  if a man wants to fight then let him fight. It would easy to say that OLD WRITERS should stop writing cause they really don't have anything CREATIVE to write about. Once in their prime WRITERS can write eloquent pieces which elicit imagination from their readership. However once they age and don't learn new vocabulary then the work becomes repetitive and then they should RETIRE. ...So you see how stupid that sound right. If jones want to fight let him fight.
Friday Aug 14, 2009 08:01:47 AM
Alan:  Come on now. Roy is Roy. For all Ron's talk, the only thing Roy is fighting against at this point is his declining popularity. That's a shame, but let's be honest, Ron: You secretly were hoping that Roy would beat Calzaghe -that would have been a good story, and writers love a good story. So, quietly, you were probably hoping for something no different that what Roy continues to hope for. Difference is, he actually has to do the work, and we only have to watch.
Friday Aug 14, 2009 08:46:13 AM
Anony:  THIS IS THE SAME AS WHEN JONES FOUGHT SHEIKA LAST TIME... people, let him fight!!!!!!!!! What's the problem with it???? The man loves to fight and wants to make some money still.. well... let him be!!!!!!!!!!! That only proves he has always carry the cojones and the heart - when he was in his prime and now in a new stage. I won't pay for the fight but I will be checking on him as always. In fact, I believe he will win this one and more to come.
Friday Aug 14, 2009 09:23:11 AM
Anony @ killron:  WELL SAID.... writers should be able to absorb your critic like Jones has absorbed his share of punchers.... It's funny because most boxing writers (never mind how much they criticize now) will be eagerly expecting to know the outcome of this fight... Remember he still Roy Jones, jr. - a name to be remembered with respect. Real boxing fans are loyal.

#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  No disrespect, but where's the coverage for the Pacquiao-Cotto fight? I'd rather discuss about that fight than this meaningless fight.

#1 PacFan "KO's Cotto in 7":  ...or even the Mayweather-Marquez.

AFN back in Cayman and missing Newcastle already:  I think if he throws a quick left right combo, the REF could take out both of these guys before the opening bell and save us all the heartache of watching a legend dissolving further out of memory. I'll be going for Donaire myself, remember, free at myP2P . eu TOONOY YA BAS
Friday Aug 14, 2009 02:15:39 PM
MisterLee:  @ Andy from Newcastle! Take care man! Hope you're finding things to occupy your time! @ kill ron: There's a BIG difference. Ron Borges STILL writes well, has fans, and lots of drawing power and is the top writer in TSS, and unlike other professions, in writing you write better with age and you don't have to worry about a decomposition or decline, unlike boxing which depends on your hands and your reflexes. No one's stopping Roy from fighting, but ya can't stop the critics from yacking b/c we're the ones who have to suffer this kind of fight, just like the scareweather vs. canvas kisser fight, if roy retires, then we can hail his career, as long as he keeps fighting on, i'd rather watch two journeymen go at it, wait, that would be a great promotional title! holla!

Is It Only Money That Matters?
"Who refuses to take a drug test worth $40 million?" For the American psyche, money is everything. It transcends what is right or what is wrong. For a certain amount of money, I'll do anything. Manny is Filipino, and he cannot fathom that kind of thinking. Is that what capitalism should be? I can't understand why $40 million should dictate your personality. Simply put, Pacquiao has his own dignity and refuses to be manipulated into taking $40M and giving his (butt) to anyone who wants it." ---TSS reader "Tony" informs readers of a possible cultural difference which causes certain peoples to interpret Pacquiao's refusal to cater to Mayweather's testing demands (photo by Chris Cozzone)
