TSS U, who do you like? The vet Campbell, who says he's still hungry, and strong, or Bradley, the steady, unheralded guy who just keeps winning?

Where's Nate Campbell? Check Under Your Chin

By Rick Folstad

The thing to remember about Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell is that he’s Opie Taylor outside the ring and Freddy Krueger inside it. Campbell doesn’t beat you as much as he robs you, reaches in, yanks out your heart and stomps on it, gives it a good whack.

That’s what WBO junior-welterweight champ Timothy “Desert Storm“ Bradley (24-0, 11 KOs) will be trying to avoid when he defends his title against Campbell on Saturday night at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, Calif.(SHOWTIME).  If this were a football game, Bradley, who lives in North Palm Springs, Calif., would be the home team. And he should grab onto any advantage he can get.

Campbell (33-5-1, 25 KOs), who fights out of Tampa, is one of those annoying, non-stop fighters who won’t allow you to catch your breath. He’s easy to find. Check under your chin. That’s where he spends most of his fight time.

Bradley is aware of Campbell’s in-your-face style. He watched him pull off the upset of a lifetime 17 months ago in Cancun, Mexico when Campbell muscled the lightweight title out of the hands of heavily-favored Juan Diaz.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Bradley said on a recent conference call promoting his fight with Campbell. “Sitting there in Cancun, I could not believe it. And I actually lost money on that fight. I think I lost five pesos. When I saw Nate put those hands on Juan I was like, ’this dude is unbelievable.’ “

What’s unbelievable is, Bradley found someone to take his bet.

Not to say Diaz took Campbell lightly, but you don’t look past a fight with Campbell. You circle the date on your calendar and get ready for a rough night.

Asked why he thought he could do any better against Campbell than Diaz did, Bradley first reminded every one that he wasn’t Juan Diaz.

“I’m not one dimensional,” he said. “Juan Diaz is one dimensional. He can’t move, he can’t box. He can’t adjust in the ring. I can make my adjustments in the ring. That makes me feel more confident.“

Campbell moved up to the junior-welterweight division after he lost his lightweight title on the scale in February when he couldn’t make weight in his win against Ali Funeka.

Despite forfeiting his title, Campbell again looked pretty good against a top contender who could punch. And again, Bradley was impressed.

“I was like, ‘wow, I would never want to get in the ring against that dude,’” Bradley said. “But to be the best you’ve got to beat the best. That’s why I’m taking this challenge. I want to be the best fighter in the world at 140 pounds.”

And he said he has to go through Nate Campbell to call himself that.

Campbell doesn’t try to fool anyone in the ring. He doesn’t go for cute or tricky. He isn’t as fast as he is relentless, he isn’t as gifted as he is determined, and he isn’t as slick as he is tough. He doesn’t win by knockout, he wins by attrition. He beats away the early swagger most fighters carry into the ring with them, then starts to work on what‘s left.

“When the bell rings, I’m out to do damage,” Campbell said. “All that about being nice, I leave that outside the ring. We can be friends after round 12. But from the first round to the last, I’m out there to take his head off, to bust his ribs. I want to hurt him. I want to ruin him. That‘s my job. We get paid for this.”

Also on the card is a title fight between Devon Alexander and Junior Witter, who will be fighting for the vacant WBC junior-welterweight title.

Bradley beat Witter for the WBC and WBO titles in May 2008, and then gave up the WBC belt when he refused to meet the deadline for agreeing to fight Alexander, the WBC mandatory challenger.

“This fight actually represents something a lot bigger than just Bradley and Nate getting it on,“ said Terry Trekas, Campbell’s co-promoter and advisor. “This represents the top fighters in the division fighting each other without it being mandatory, without there being ridiculous catch-weights or insane financial demands. This is two guys basically saying ‘let’s do it.’ ”

“Expect fireworks,” Bradley said. “A total train wreck between two hungry, determined fighters who come to fight.”

“ I have no pressure on me,” Campbell said. “I have nothing to prove to anybody in Palm Springs. They already think Timmy is going to win, so I’m just going to do my thing.”

Clay:  I think Nate will put so much pressure that Bradley will find it difficult to get off, when he does pull the trigger Nate will be back out of range and then like a bull, be right back in Bradleys chest. I like Nate by a hard fought decision, maybe even split,or majority draw.

#1 Pacfan "KO's Cotto in 7":  Since this would be the first time Nate is fighting at 140, this would be a hard one to call. Nate has really impress me as of late when he totally exposed a prime J. Diaz when he turned and burned him. He was a smart prey who became the predator in that fight. When he fought Funeka it was the total opposite, he was the predator who eat his prey. This explains his maturity in the game which is why I'm picking Campbell for another upset of the year. I'm taking Nate by mid-round stoppage or split decision. It's going to be a collision course. This might be the first time we'll see Bradley having to fight backwards otherwise it's going to be an early night for him. If Bradley's power affects Campbell then well see him playing the counter-puncher. Either way Nate is still a good fighter if he is pressured.

the Roast:  I am lovin this card because we need some action after all that has happened. Hard to forget that Nate is the same guy who got KOed by Robbie Peden. His first fight at 140 with one of the best at this weight. This will be a great fight. Campbell knows that his time is running out. He will give his best effort, but It won't be enough. Bradley will win by UD, but it's gonna be a barn burner!

Fistic Fury:  Bradley by UD for me aswell. I don't know why but I just don't see Nate as 'elite' although I was impressed that he beat Diaz and Funeka. Funeka is a good fighter and I picked him to beat Campbell and infact without the knockdowns he would of but it's still a decent win. Nate is moving up a weight so that should be interesting but he does have huge shoulders so he has the frame to go up. One thing's for sure, he obviously didn't fancy a warm up bout at 140lbs, he jumped straight in the deep end and I think he'll drown...

ali:  I want Nate to win I see it being a close fight but Bradley wins by SD.... At this point in Nate career and with him moving up in weight I don't think he's able to catch up with Bradley enough but he might be able to get a few knockdowns & steal a couple of rounds that's why I said SD.

deepwater:  Nasty Nate is going to pull this one out too.Bradley will have his momnents but look for Nate to come through one more time.

brownsugar:  Diaz would have beat Nate if he would have used his legs and jabbed more,.. Diaz did fall into Nates trap by trying to bang with him,.. Nate volume punches toe-toe much better than he can box,.. Funeka would have won easily,.. had he not gone down again late in the fight,.. but against Bradley,.. Nates good fortunes will run out,.. he will be effortlessly outgunned,.. outboxed and out hustled,...Nate is a game and entertaining fighter,... but he'd need a miracle to defeat "Desert Storm",.... a better fight for Nate would have been against Holt,... that would have been an all action war with Holt eventually landing a KO shot to Nates accessible chin... expect a wide UD for Bradley...and expect Nate to be exposed as a solid boxer,.. but hardly the elite boxer he's been pumped up to be after he defeated Diaz... I hope this fight will help cure some of Nates financial problems and that he can continue to earn good money after he loses to Bradley...

Yuvie:  As I said on this Alexander post. This is a card I'm hyped for. Truly a card for the real boxing fans out there. 4 solid fighters in what seems like a bit of a tourney. It seems like the obvious way to go, winner of fight a takes on winner of fight b. Anyway, onto Bradley/Campbell............I really like Bradley, I personally feel that if he wins this fight he deserves some kind of p4p status. He's the definition of a proper fighter, he has that ring savvy that is rare to find in a fighter and he always seems to find a way to win his fights, even when things aren't looking too good for him. I expect more of the same this weekend. Campbell will not be without his successes in this fight but I see Bradley diggin' deep and finding away out of this fight with the win. He'll just be too awkward for Campbell to deal with. I can see controversy this weekend, I think both these fights are gonna be real close fights to score. Hopefully the right men get the nod.

#1 Pacfan "KO's Cotto in 7":  @brownsugar, I think the only way Diaz would have won that fight is if he had power in his punches. That's the number one remedy for a one dimensional fighter like Diaz. Campbell is responsible for Marquez's win with Diaz. He had the blueprint. Diaz would have also won that fight with JMM if hemloaded up on his punches. There many times he got Marquez with the left hook but didn't affect the wily Mexican. To make matters worst he doesn't take punches well that's why he likes to aggressive and not let his opponents get off. Back to topic...that's the one thing that worries me about Nate is his accessibe chin. I think Nate's going to catch him in the middle rounds with one of his haymakers and if not it's going to be a close fight. He has a lot more to offer for us fight fans.

brownsugar:  #1PacFan...I hear you but Diaz boxed circles around Katsidis,.. he can box quite well when he wants to,... but sometimes his agressiveness is what he falls back on in tough fights,.. he thought he would overwhelm Nate,.. but Nate was looking like he had the stamina of a twenty year old,..after he was cut he went in survival mode,.... in Nates favor,.. Juan never asked for a rematch,.. against Marquez Diaz was winning,..althought he was taking the harder shots,.... but got greedy and couldn't change his strategy,.. with more experience I think he would have boxed more,... hopefully he's learned his lesson,.. Bradley vs Nate should be better than Bradley / Holt,.. Nate will be right there,.. but can't crack like Holt,..neither does he have the speed,.. at least there's a good fight on for the weekend...
Wednesday Jul 29, 2009 08:05:40 PM
brownsugar:  if Bradley wins,.. maybe we can see him against Maidana,... or even Ortiz (once he recycled back into the mix),.. I don't know if I would want to see him against Khan which would be like going to a track meet,..but that could be a big payday...

bobby pacquiao:  hey tim. you cant be the best in 140 by beating soupy who's not even tested at all in this division. you cant be boxing's poster boy either because you've got a very black ass and you highly resembled the neanthertals which prompted charles darwin to make conclusions on his evolution theory that all men came from the apes! ooooooooooops, its gonna hurt....but indeed, its the truth!

max hord:  Nate should have had a manager...There's one in particular I am thinking about right here in FLA, Angie Dundee. You can't manage, train and negotiate all at the same time.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
