Ana Julaton Vs. Melissa Hernandez Sadly Won't Be On TV

By David A. Avila

Filipina boxing star Ana “the Hurricane” Julaton will be stepping into the eye of the storm when she meets New York’s Melissa Hernandez, who earlier used the same nickname but is dispensing with it.

“I see she calls herself ‘Hurricane’ so for this fight she can have the name and I’ll use my new ring name of 'I Am Women’s Boxing'” said Hernandez.

Northern California’s Julaton (4-1-1) is moving up in weight to challenge Hernandez for her WIBA junior lightweight title on Saturday Aug. 1, at Agua Caliente Casino near Palm Springs. Sadly, it won’t be televised.

It’s Hernandez’s second venture on a fight card that will be televised, but her fight with Julaton won’t be included in the televised portion. Though she has a fight today in Panama, the fighter that many call the Pound for Pound best female boxer today has no problem fighting weekly.

“I would love to fight as many times as I can because it keeps me busy and fighting all of the best out there,” said Hernandez (10-1-2), who has already clashed with fellow Pound for Pounders like Layla McCarter and Chevelle Hallback.

Julaton, who regularly fights at 122 pounds, was eager to move up two divisions to challenge Hernandez for the world title.

“I’ve only got this period of my life to show what I can do as a boxer,” said Julaton, who recently turned 29. “There are a lot of girl fighters that want to fight Melissa Hernandez. That’s why I want this fight.”

The Daly City resident has a two-inch height advantage but has never fought anyone above 123 pounds. Hernandez has fought opponents as high as 134 and as light as 119. They’ll be fighting for the 130-pound weight division crown.

Expect a large group of Julaton followers to arrive next week. One thing Julaton has proved aside from being an aggressive and strong boxer is that she has a strong fan base as well. In her last fight, a year ago, busloads of her fans drove from Daly City to Lemoore, California to lend their loud and boisterous support for the brunette. Maybe it’s her willingness to engage in toe-to-toe action and meet whoever promoters place in front of her, even a fighter that is considered the best in the world today.

“Why not?” says Julaton, who has trained in martial arts for many years. “To be successful you have to take opportunities. I want to be able to say I fought the best.”

Hernandez understands Julaton.

“I believe it’s a win-win game for her at this point,” said Hernandez who fights Panama’s undefeated Amber Fajardo today in Panama City in a six-round fight. “I think she’s not in my class though. But hey, it’s boxing and one punch can change everything.”

The New York fighter has captured fans with her flamboyant style of making opponents miss, countering, and sticking her tongue out as she trades bombs with whoever is in the ring.

Julaton has a good idea what to expect.

“Just watching her tapes, what makes her different is she gets into opponents' minds,” said Julaton. “It’s going to be a fun fight.”

Hernandez likes Julaton’s spirit.

“Her taking this fight is a big jump in her game and I give her all the props for doing so,” said the Puerto Rican star.

Too bad it won’t be televised.

Peter Egley:  On paper this seems a mismatch, I agree with "I Am Women's Boxing." Julaton has some good names on her resume like Dominga Olivo (fought McCarter twice, and Hernandez in Golden Gloves), Clara De La Torre, someone else I think I'm not mentioning. Julaton is right also I think, Hernandez does psyche opponents. She was a completely different fighter in winning the rematch of her only loss. I'm just a mere long time spectator, but I completely respect Hernandez's boxing. She's a bit of a phenom if that's hopefully the word, she's moved quickly in the pro ranks, and succeeded. The Hallback match was a war, and Hernandez fought her to a furious draw, a fighter (Hallback) that P4P McCarter has not been able to apparently impose her will on in two decision losses. Melissa is very elusive, will will throw down if need be. lol I sound like her press agent! Seriously, I don't know who's gonna win, but I honestly do not see Julaton being able to beat the "real" Huracan. I'm at a point where I never bet against her. I think Melissa will eventually pull a Marlon Starling and go after Holly Holm like Starling did when he faced perhaps the best fighter at the time in Michael Nunn.

Peter Egley:  This woulda been a good ESPN2 fight.

MisterLee:  wow,i thought peter eggs was "I am women'sboxing",looks like hernandez needs to find ANOTHER name! :) take care.
Tuesday Jul 21, 2009 07:23:42 PM
MisterLee:  BTW - That Pinay is lookin' A-OK, that's what I say! But she's no Millie De La Hoya, right Radam? :) :) haha... sike. But yeah, wow, good fighter plus good lookin', what more can a guy ask? @ the Roast, I hope fisherg didn't read your post! :-p- -

MisterLee @ Eggs:  How's that depression coming? Hard to be depressed and watch that picture at the same time! Just like chewing gum and walking, texting and driving, swimming and not getting wet! :) Yeah, i wrote a pretty long post in the "Woods" article on the "Khan-queror". Please read it! Apparently it kept getting rejected because I used "hurl" in the post, and the filter picked it up as a "URL" hahaa..i was so frustrated! Hope your well man, my feeling, gotta exorcise the demons man (phobias, fears, past, traumas etc.), therapy + meditation bro. Even try yoga, it's the easiest thing to find anywhere, and it decreases anxiety, increase bloodflow, relaxes muscles, tones muscles, and your surrounded by beautiful women. Also, you ever read Dark night of the soul by st. john of the cross, or confessions by st. augustine? All good examples of the sea of humanity that have struggled in the hurt bitness of life (they swam, but they got wet too! Maybe St.John needed to work on his head movement! Pc out!) Tss rules!

Peter Egley:  Hey MisterLee I appreciate the kindness. The illness continues to be really difficult. But I love life. TSS has been real kind and patient with allowing a lot of my stuff to be uncensored regarding this disease. I can be compulsive because it really dominates me, but the Alexis Arguello story, if what has been written are indeed the facts of what happened to him, it's, just time for me to learn to live with it as best I can. I'm gonna try my best to just talk boxing now. For me Alexis Arguello brought everything out in to the open. Anyway, I hope to see the David Haye vs. is it Vitali? match. I think Haye seems to be very underestimated. He's a truly credible challenger to the heavyweight championship in my book. Holly Holm is scheduled to face Terri Blair. Blair is a tough cookie. James Toney anyone? Blair has done it before. When Sumya Anani was possibly the P4P best, the money had to warrant the risk of getting in the ring with her, but Blair took the challenge and apparently sent Anani in to retirement after defeating her twice. In my book two of the best female fighters are Holly Holm and Melissa Hernandez, and then Mary Jo Sanders who managed a draw against Holm. I really do not know much about the top fighters below lightweight, so I can't comment on them.

the Roast:  @MisterLee, AfisherG and I continue to deal with the stress of a long distance relationship. She realizes that one woman cannot season the Roast. I am alot to handle and I welcome all inquiries to the pants party. That's all I have to say about that. Mayorga??
Tuesday Jul 21, 2009 10:40:14 PM
Peter Egley:  Hernandez, I think. ;)

GOAT:  Don't know if she can fight but damm she looks good! I really, really, really etc hate womens boxing. It's like the WNBA, too slow and not enough skillz.

Anony - WATCH IT, THAT'S MY NEW GIRLFRIEND:  Watch it everyone here!!!!! She is my girlfriend!!!!!!!! We met in one of those boring Golden Boy press conference in Vegas back in May. Since then we have been like butter and bread. Obviously I helped her to develop into a TV fighter but I'm a little disapointed cause I told her not to do a sexy pose in that shooting and there she goes... modeling instead of showing her big fists.... What can I say??... she could be dangerous but still love to fashion. Now I will have to spank her tonight for being a BAD GIRL!!!!!!!! hehehehe
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 07:55:53 AM
Peter Egley:  According to BoxRec, Hernandez defeated Ambar Fajardo by 5th rd TKO. Going by her record, Fajardo was definitely in over her head although undefeated. The Julaton bout should be a bit sterner test for lol "I Am Women's Boxing." That Huracan is quite the world explorer. If this Julaton can keep a jab in her face and study that first McCarter fight, but I don't expect to see Hernandez lose her spirit again like that. It was a TKO loss (the McCarter I match), but I don't see that happening again anytime soon.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 10:23:07 AM
Sabre:  Ana is drop dead gorgeous no doubt. But I'm gonna have to go with Melissa. I might get surprised though.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 10:51:11 AM
sick:  The ladies at lightweight and lower are much more skilled than the bigger girls. there faster and slicker but they dont hit as hard. they are also finer. much finer. julaton is a pretty girl and can fight some. that melissa girl is pretty damn good with her fists. she cracks me up.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 11:16:25 AM
#1 Pacfan "KO's Cotto in 7":  She's alright...prefer a light skinned Pinay. Melissa is much hotter than Ana. Shouldn't they be ring card girls? Peter E. must be loving this one.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 12:09:50 PM
#1 Pacfan "KO's Cotto in 7":  Melissa Cooper to be exact.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 12:10:29 PM
Peter Egley:  What I'm really loving right now is watching The Great White Hype again, incredibly spot on and funny. Anyway, I've not seen Cooper although she gets written about fairly often here. Boxing is boxing. I'm psyched for the Vitali vs. Haye heavyweight fight more than this to be honest. I believe KlitschKO (tough name to remember how to spell, but I know it ends with KO). There's actually a hilarious to me (in a good natured way of course) report on WBAN on Hernandez's win in Panama City. She's described as the "spunky Puerto Rican," and this quote from the article is humorous: "Hernandez displayed tremendous hand speed and accuracy in her punching, with most of the blows directed at (her opponent)'s face." I think Julaton be in trouble. #1 Pacfan, have you seen Melinda Cooper fight? I've not had the opportunity. I need to look at some Miguel Cotto, I've got a friend that thinks he's the best. She trains in NY and met him.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 12:45:43 PM
Master Snake :  the Roast, you want Mayorga to come to the party in your pants? I bet he'd season your balls up real nice with some hot combos.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 01:02:03 PM
FIOHTCHICK:  Ana Julaton in way over her head. She should be fighting K West not melissa hernandez. Julaton should fight Ava Knight . Seems like both Julaton and k West are ducking eachother and neither one of them could be Ava Knight. Step it up girls and fight truly your real competition. I dont see Julaton getting knocked out but i do see her getting hurt. I cant believe her manager is going to let this fight happen. BAD MANAGEMENT
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 01:33:07 PM
Boxer:  Melinda Cooper. I seen her. She is hot. That Vegas girl can punch too for a little girl. when she fighting?
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 02:18:46 PM
Peter Egley:  I don't see that Cooper is presently scheduled. I see TSS has ANOTHER article already on women's boxing! I'm burned out! lol I did glance thru it, yawned that Laila Ali is supposedly gonna resume her boxing, only against fighters that fans know! (Who?) I know McCarter had a crazy idea of thinking she could beat Ali, but that's probably ludicrous. Again, I'm hoping Rolanda Andrews does well against Kaliesha West. Andrews is solid, I think I said, and West is moving up in weight.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 02:55:12 PM
#1 Pacfan "KO's Cotto in 7":  My bad, I meant Melinda Cooper. @Peter E., no I haven't seen her fight yet but I would like to. I would have to tell my wife to go out with her friends first though.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 03:12:08 PM
Yuvie:  Damn, I usually avoid female boxing at all cost, might have to check her out. Seriously man, what's a girl like that doing in a sport like boxing. I'd hate to see a beauty like that get beat up. I'm the opposite of Pacfan, I prefer a darker skin filipina.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 03:17:48 PM
MisterLee @ the Roast:  Hahah!!!! nice! yeah, i meant the mayorga who gave pink gloves to mosley and said it was gonna be like an amateur fight: 3 rounds and it's over! Hhaa.. i meant your the best with joking and comic excellence :). These guys, for all their tongue in cheek, really drive a fight promotion, and your funny antics keeps me and the board laughing hard! :) So afisherg needs more seasoning? She might need some more "sugar" or some "heater" up in there! Haha... "i'm having a pants party, and you're invited" ... "my apartment smells of mahogany and my shelves are filled with leather bound books" " i'm kind of a big deal" " i wanna be on you..." ~anchorman. Regardless, Peter egley you da man moorer! Dude! i need to start watching women's boxing, i 'm starting to recognize the names even tho i never seen them fight nor know their weight division. pc out!

AFN in Newcastle:  Hot beyond belief. I'm speechless. And I can't type well with only my left hand. TOONOY YA BAS
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 05:03:00 PM
MisterLee:  Hahaha!!!! nice!!! soo good. I bet ana julaton would be more honored than Fighter of the Year award at BWAA's! :) yep.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 05:22:57 PM
the Roast:  @Master Snake, No, no, no. Mayorga cannot come to my pants party. As you may have already gathered, I was responding to MisterLee comparing me to Mayorga. Speaking of the Caveman, Anchorman rules! I have seen it at least 30 times. " 60% of the time, it works all the time" As for AfisherG, the Oklahoma-Chicago thing may be too much for us to overcome. That and my wife hates it when I see other girls. Now I have to go over to that other page with the female fighter and make a crude yet witty comment.
Wednesday Jul 22, 2009 06:26:57 PM
MisterLee:  HAHAHAHA....ur married! that's hilarious the Roast! that would bother any woman! but it's always good to have a late replacement in case your wife's hands go thru the shower door. Blasphemy i know, marriage is a sacred thing, but so is TSS!:) Mayorga! he's been 3rd place for years! ur about to be dead place!

I love the melonin (hope I spelled right ) I'd bun that up . One night , some Patron and Caronas , she never look at another man again . Put that on everything I love ! I'm gonna have to move to Cali . Woah !!!

The iron fist:  watch, everyones going to be stunned by anas hand speed and power, melissa has no idea whos shes going into the ring with, just watch, you guys may think im foolish, but she hasnt been gone from the ring for no reason, and after the fight (which i will be attending) you can go ahead and leave your comments asking how i knew. lol not to be cocky, just very confident in my figher, she trains EXTREMELY hard.
Thursday Jul 23, 2009 08:19:47 AM
Anonymous user:  i hope you are there to throw in the white towl iron fist- martial arts are one thing- boxing is another- its not a matter of hand speed- i dont think she is crafty enuf yet- Ana has a ton of potential, BUT she IS GOING TO BE IN THE EYE OF THE STORM - Melissa has been active- that certainly plays a part in the outcome of the next fight. IRON FIST- You are not cocky- you just dont know what you are talking about
Thursday Jul 23, 2009 10:31:01 AM
MisterLee @ anony:  What can I say? I'm just a caveman. Hagler ended my career as a fighter, so now I'm a lover :). Yep.

HerkR:  Can't wait to watch Ana get KNOCKED OUT!
Friday Jul 24, 2009 03:15:43 PM
Peter Egley:  I wish I knew more about Ana Julaton. An experienced fighter can beat Hernandez i.e. "Amazing" Layla McCarter (although Hernandez did manage a surprising upset decision in a rematch with McCarter). Hernandez may or may not be a frontrunner, McCarter did a complete number on her when they first met, seemed exasperated at Hernandez's ability to bring some kind of fight. Perhaps McCarter simply dropped the ball because Hernandez was stunned that she earned a decision after getting stopped the first time. Holyfield said it regarding Mike Tyson before their first match, that pressure busts pipes, that he thought he could (which he of course did) make Tyson quit. I don't know if Julaton can do this, but the proof is in the pudding, Hernandez has folded when things were not going her way. Maybe Julaton, though seemingly unlikely, make Hernandez punk out again.

Monday Jul 27, 2009 01:36:57 PM
afisherg:  WELL, Julaton pulled out of the fight. I spoke with Hernandez today and she will now fight Brooke Dierdorff. Either way, the fiesty Hernandez comes out on top.
Monday Jul 27, 2009 08:12:14 PM
Anonymous user:  WHY did she pull out- injury?
Tuesday Jul 28, 2009 10:46:28 AM
HerkR:  Ha! She realized what she was up against! She'll probably claim she was "injured". Julaton is an average fighter, but nothing impressive. She would have been layed out on the canvas like Hatton. She can't ride the filipino fighter wave for that long with the lack of skills she has..
Tuesday Jul 28, 2009 11:06:18 AM
HeavyHitter:  I read the fight got postponed to Sept. 18, that's been confirmed on boxrec. From what I read on a recent article, its been moved around by the promoter. Can't wait to see this fight, should be a good one.
