Please cross your fingers that fate is kind to Hershman and Showtime, as it will be difficult to keep the 168 tournament train on the tracks.

Bravo, And Good Luck, SHOWTIME!

By Ron Borges

Seldom do these things work out the way they’re supposed to but maybe this time it will be different. At least that’s what boxing fans should hope for and SHOWTIME executive Ken Hershman is counting on.

Monday at Madison Square Garden Hershman officially announced a long-rumored six-man, round-robin super middleweight tournament to crown one beltless but far more legitimate world champion. It will pit WBA titleholder Mikkel Kessler, WBC champion Carl Froch, top American contenders Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell, IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham and ex-middleweight titleholder Jermain Taylor. It is a field of the best super middleweights in the world, the only arguable exclusions being undefeated beltholders Lucien Bute (24-0) and Kaoly Balzsay (21-0). That is unfortunate but if that’s the worse thing that can be said about Hershman’s efforts everyone should count their blessings.

The most attractive part of the idea, other than the roster of fighters itself, is that it is not a single-elimination event. There will be three preliminary rounds totaling nine fights followed by advancing the top four fighters through a point system into a semi-final double header. Then its winner take all sometime by mid-2011, barring injury or worse.

That winner will not only be the SHOWTIME champion but he’ll be one of the few champions in recent years who has won a title the old fashioned way - by beating the other top fighters in the division.

Hopefully, the format will create natural rematches and clear challengers in a sport that seems to have forgotten what that means or how important it is to boxing’s legitimacy. But for any of that to work out this tournament has to not end up like most of its predecessors, which almost always seemed to disintegrate when someone got a better offer and decided to pull out or, in the case of the infamous ABC-RING Magazine tournament promoted by Don King, collapsed under the weight of phony ratings, bribes and a Federal investigation into it all.

This tournament seems to have easily avoided the latter by taking four of the top super middleweights in the world and adding Abraham, who may be the best middleweight on the planet but who has been considering moving up for some time. The one dubious selection is Taylor, who though once one of the hottest commodities in the sport has slipped badly under the weight of losing three of his last four fights, two by stoppage.

Still Hershman is to be commended for bringing six top fighters and their five promoters under one tent. It is the kind of thing boxing needs if it is to regain some of the legitimacy it has lost in the past decade or so.

In any sport, people want to know – need to know really – who the champion is. If pro football had two teams claiming to be Super Bowl champion it would not be super. If the American and National League champions refused to play each other and instead opted out to face the Tokyo Giants and Team Puerto Rico instead there would be a fan revolt.

Only the people running boxing seem to believe that the more champions the better. It may be better for self-deluded sanctioning bodies but it isn’t for fans and they’re the ones who pay everyone’s expenses. Although super middleweight is neither one of the traditional eight weight classes nor a glamour division, what Hershman hopes to have done by June, 2011 is to have turned at least one of these guys into both a household name and a superstar and he may just pull it off if everything goes as planned.

King did something similar but in far less ambitious fashion when he ran his middleweight tournament on HBO eight years ago. The major difference was only four fighters were involved, it was a single loss elimination and King had all of them under contract. He was able to avoid the usual politics of boxing because he had no one to argue with but himself…and of course Bernard Hopkins.

Hershman has accomplished something far more difficult if he can hold this together for the 18 months to two years it will take to complete it. He has six fighters with a combined record of 161-4-1 with 117 knockouts agreeing in advance who they will fight and when without apparent interference from the five promoters who represent them. This is nearly as miraculous as Jesus walking on water.

Handicapping those fights will be difficult and demanding, which is good. They boast different styles and levels of experience but of the six Kessler, the WBA champion, may be the favorite. He is extremely strong and his only loss (41-1, 31 KO) came against Joe Calzaghe, who retired undefeated last year after holding the 168 pound title for a decade so there’s no shame in that.

Abraham (30-0, 24 KO) is an extremely sturdy middleweight with both punching power and the ability to take what he has to take to find a way to win. He may prove to be a bit undersized in the end but someone is going to have to work hard to convince him of that.

Froch (25-0, 20 KO) surprised the boxing world when he cold-cocked Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KO) in his last outing, struggling initially with Taylor’s athleticism but eventually wearing him down and then taking him out. Froch’s strength will make him difficult for any of the others to match while Taylor’s propensity for last-minute fades as the pressure mounts would make him a long shot to even make the semi-finals.

As for Ward (19-0, 12 KO) and Dirrell (18-0, 13), youth is on their side but a lack of experience is not. Neither has been tested in the ways the other four have and if everything goes as planned the importance of that will get its first test in October when the fast-moving Dirrell is tentatively scheduled to face Froch in England. Although Dirrell is the superior boxer, Froch, on paper at least, would seem to have the edge where it counts most – in punching power, relentlessness and experience.

Ward is scheduled to face an even sterner test in Kessler on Nov. 7. Kessler is exceedingly strong, steady and some believe the class of the division. What Ward is no one really knows for sure as this will be by far his biggest test.

Yet the fact is he handled dangerous Edison Miranda handily and stopped Jerson Ravelo at a time when some felt Ravelo might test Ward. If anyone in the tournament is underrated it would be the 2004 Olympic gold medalist who has always done things with the kind of quiet efficiency that has left him under appreciated. A win over Kessler would change that perception in a hurry and that is what this entire tournament is designed to do.

It is designed to change the public’s perception that boxing has forgotten that true undisputed champions can be crowned in only one place – in the ring.

ali:  I don't know who to pick but I wish they would put more tournaments like this together that way we could really find out who is the best in there division. Hopefully somebody can do the same for the welterweight division now that would big. If you ask most people if they had a choice they would pick 147 pound weight class but 168 would do for now.

ultimoshogun:  Sounds great! Hopefully this all works out. MisterLee, your boy Ward is jumping right into the deep end of the pool..its sink or swim for him. We're gonna find out if this kids the real deal. I gotta say I agree that Kessler is the favorite to win the the whole thing though.

Fistic Fury:  This could potentially change boxing forever and for the better I might add. This truly is the most exciting thing happening in boxing right now BUT I see various problems ruining it, most likely injury and money disputes although I hope not because i've been saying for years that I wanted something like this to take place. There is something similar in the UK called 'prizefighter' that the powers that be put on every 3 months or so with different weights each time, the difference being that it all gets done in one night, (8 fighters, 4 quarter finals, 2 semi finals, 1 final.) all the fights last 3 rounds and there is only a short rest and you're back in the ring for your next fight. Also the other more obvious difference is that these guys are at best journey men whereas this upcoming tournament is the best of the best. Results if all goes well? Well I will be cheering Froch on but I have a hunch king Arthur will reign supreme...

Fistic Fury:  Also I think the fact that Arthur Abraham is taking part in this shows his willingness to meet the very best and therefore encourages me and probably many others to believe that he was not to blame for the big fights at 160lbs never materialising... Pavlik and Sturm anybody???
Monday Jul 13, 2009 01:41:44 PM
GOAT:  I was sceptical when I first herd about the tournament, but it sounds like it's going to be great! I think Jermaine Taylor is about done as a serious contender but the rest of the bunch should make for some interesting fights. I like Ward to come out on top, who yall got?

brownsugar:  Taylor came within a hair's breadth of defeating Froch,.. he nearly had Pavlik down for the count and was ahead on the cards before fading near the end,...he probably has the stiffest, sharpest jab and boxing skills of the lot,... but we know what happens to Jermaine in deep waters... glad he's in the contest,.. hope he can earn some type redemption and possibly an upset or 2,.. Arthur A is a suprise,.. after wondering if he had the heart to fight Pavlik,.. he jumps out of the frying pan into the fight,.. like a true competitor,.. Now that AA can eat again,.. there's no telling how far he'll go,.. he's not the best boxer,.. but he can bang,... Kessler,... the most overrated of the entire bunch,.. still a decent boxer,.. won't have enough for Ward,.. Dirrell,.. love the way he unloads those left -right hooks,.. and how he diggs deep into his uppercuts,.. very flashy,.. but what happens to him when he gets hit,??? the least experienced of the bunch... Froch wont go down without a fight to the death,... greatest thing to happen to boxing in ages,.. I'm proud to be able to view thest valiant prospects as the vie for the supreme position of undisputed world champ...(even if Bute is not included)
Monday Jul 13, 2009 04:45:57 PM
brownsugar:  Fistic,.. I'm with you,.. it seems like they've put Pavlik back in the kiddie pool after his loss to BHop,.. it shows that they aren't ready,.. if Pavlik had beaten Bhop,.. his name would have been the first on the list,.. probably best that the wait for his ability to catch up with his hype before moving him up...

MisterLee:  1.) Andre Ward 2.) Abraham or direll 3.) Kessler 4.) Froch 5.) Taylor HOWEVER, I see froch beating dirrell in the first round of fights in october, but kessler beating froch later on. Taylor gonna gas out with his gas mask. He's an amazing athlete and boxer, but I don't think he's hard nosed enough to duke it out with any of these guys: abraham will slam him around the ring, dirrell can matcn his speed, kessler is a great boxer and a solid puncher, froch will haunt his dreams, andre ward who is fighting taylor (and later dirrell) next summer is simply way more well rounded and has better endurance. Abraham and froch would be an intersting match up, since froch has underrated boxing skills, and can bang too. That would be one for hte ages. Dirrell froch, in october will be awesome, the superb but flawed athlete, vs. the more experience hard bearded slugger with long arms and reach. I have froch on this one, dirrell has too any flaws and froch's power and pressure will break him down. I feel taylor Might be able to beat dirrell or it will be a close one, i think dirrell could outbox abraham, i feel kessler has good chance with any of these guys EXCEPT andre ward, who will be taking a Ph. D thesis in boxing studies in November, andre is the most well roundd, has the best defense of the bunch, can swtich to southpaw and orthodox, is fast, maybe not as fast as taylor, but may be so, but he 's got no flaws and is well rounded. However, i think each guy is gonna lose at least one of their 3 fights leading up to a semi final. There is simply too many styles and great matchups for one of them to truck thru the competition. If that's the case, IF one fighter goes thru the tournament undefeated i will call them the greatest supermiddleweight of our era in a flash. Andre Ward 2009! :)

Don V:  Great idea, but I doubt that this tournament will reach it's logical end. I'm betting that down the line, HBO, with it's greater revenue, subscription base, and appeal will lead some of these fighters to "jump ship." Think of all of the world champions already who started out on Showtime, made a name for themselves and left for the greener pastures of HBO. Good idea, but it will never reach a conclusion on Showtime.

MisterLee:  Don V sipping on the haterade! Why can't pple stand the fact that HBO has been throwing down crap fights (mayweather marquez any body) and not buying some good fights (dawson johnson/ johnson vs. adamek). HBO is so prevalent they are ready to topple. I feel these great champions and future champions realize what an opportunity this is just as much as the fans! And Showtime ftw!!! :)

Fe'Roz:  The very tournament itself, which puts six outstanding fighters...some very established, others top prospects...together is an exciting concept and deserves huge props. With Murphy's law at work you can be sure however that anything that can go wrong will. But then again, look at this summer of injuries and back-up matchups. (Although no tragedy that we missed such luiminaries as Sergio Mora, David Haye and Paulie Malignaggi due to real or contrived illnesses, injuries etc) Seeing these 6 serious elite fighters matching up in real fights is a joy to anticipate. I am watching Mr. Lee's wild card longshot, AW, with a ton of unanswered questions.. but One. He has balls. Fighting Kessler is no joke. Kessler fought a tough battle with the best Joe Calzaghe most of us have seen. He can bang. JT...This is his best/only chance to re-elevate his game and his position in the game. I hope he does but have many doubts. Froch we all know is a stiff with stiff resistance...but I think he gets exposed at least once in this tourney. King Arthur should be very tough...but too limited for the skilled young boys in a decision. My pick today before studying the tapes...and not having seen him for a while), Kessler.

the Roast:  Congrats to Showtime on this tournament. It is a great idea. I dont know if it will ever finish but I cant wait to find out. Looks like Showtime has passed HBO. ShoBox is good. The Championship fights are great. What has happened to HBO? No fights 'till August 22. I wish they had something coming up soon because they really ought to give Arturo Gatti a fitting tribute. Arturo's career played out in front of the HBO cameras. I'd really like to hear what Larry Merchant has to say. Come on HBO. Step up.

rudy:  @ Big Daddy, I was there for Ward-Miranda, it was wild. GREAT crowd, everybody was cheering for the Hometown fighter, just electric atmosphere for SOG. Tailgated in the parking lot before the fight, sweet night, hoping it does happen in Oakland again and they keep ticket prices reasonable like they did for the Miranda fight.

chris acosta:  I haven't crossed my fingers this tightly since high school when I was sure that the hottest chick in my class was gonna change her mind about the homecoming dance. Unfortunately, she did and it took years of therapy and blowing in paper bags to get me back together. I desperately want this tourney to happen. It's SO important to the game, the fans and will make those inept execs at HBO scramble for their common senses. Honestly, I don't even care who wins; I just want to see the best fighting the best and thank the heavens for what transpires.
