Agbeko showed Ghana his worth, and that his pre-fight confidence was no show.

No New Title For Darchinyan; Agbeko Bests Evil Vic

By Michael Woods

The leap from super flyweight to bantamweight doesn’t seem like a massive leap to the average man. What’s three pounds, after all? Vic Darchinyan knows, after Joseph Agbeko, a strong, somewhat awkward, elusive hitter from Ghana clued him in at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. on Saturday evening. Darchinyan quite likely will skedaddle back to the 115 pound class, as Agbeko scored a unanimous decision (116-111, 114-113, 114-113) victory, showing the sport’s master trash talker that he can match him in the ring, as well as he matched him in the pre-fight trash-talk wars.

The scrap was no classic, as both men worked in a herky jerky style. But “King Kong” Agbeko’s power and defensive prowess was apparent from round one, and Darchinyan had to sense that securing a belt in a third class would perhaps have to wait for another day.

The winner spoke to Jim Gray after. “This is not King Kong the movie, this is King Kong in the ring,” he said. “I want to take it to the next level, and I know Vic can never stop my dream.”

Vic post-bout looked like he’d tried to make out with a weed whacker. He said he tried to load up with the left too much, and admitted his tactics were not wise. He applauded Agbeko’s movement, but would not concede that Agbeko is the better man overall. On this night, yes. My two cents: on most nights, Vic.

Agbeko (from Accra, Ghana, now living in NY; age 29; 116 ½ pounds on Friday;  26-1 entering) put up his IBF bantamweight title against Darchinyan (former fly champ, current super fly champ; from Armenia, living in Australia; age 33; 117 ½; 32-1-1 coming).

Tommy Kimmons acted as the referee, and was in the gunsight of Agbeko’s promoter, Don King, afterwards. “You did it man, that was a crooked referee, the worst I’ve ever seen,” he thundered. “You did it, you did it anyway. No fair play at all, no fair play. The worst I’ve ever seen!”

In the first, Evil Vic got in Kong’s face. The lefthander was a little herky jerky, as usual, and he showed that he respected the Ghanian from the start. Kong buckled EV, with a right, at the 45 second mark. In the second, Kong led with the right, which Vic often slipped. Vic had a nick over his left eye, but it didn’t look worrisome. In the third, Vic still hadn’t figured out his man, or his man’s rhythm. The Ghanian is active defensively, and weaves a lot, like EV. They both whaled away with ten seconds to go. The fight was no sweet science primer to this point.

In the fourth, Vic’s balance was messy at times, and his jab was AWOL. His crackerjack left landed a few times, but nothing truly troubled Kong. Kong’s lead right was his most effective weapon, but his volume wasn’t overwhelming. In the fifth, the sloppiness reached a new high, or low. Both men were loading up too much, and their accuracy suffered. In the sixth, Kong’s right was working. He caused some bruising under Vic’s left eye, and his stamina looked to be top shelf. In the seventh, Vic landed some, but nothing he was landing was too worrying to the bantamweight. A punch that might’ve wounded a lighter weight man wasn’t in the same league on this night, to this point. And then, bang, Vic scored a knockdown, at the 3:10 mark. A left hand/push combo did the trick in the overtime period, which went an extra minute on the timekeeper’s screwup. In the eighth, Kong dialed in. His right hand was still swift and sharp, and Vic was wild and wide. EV rarely likes to keep his hands up in high guard, of course, so Kong looked to exploit that. The two men scrapped after the bell.

In the ninth round, Vic’s energy level looked impressive. In the 10th, a meaner cut opened over Vic’s right eye, from a accidental butt. He mauled and brawled, and so did the man from Accra. In the 11th, Vic moved more, and sniped away. Kong plugged away; it was another tight round. In the 12th round, Kong’s straight right scored in the best launch of the round. Vic’s right eye streamed blood by the fight’s close. Agbeko and his squad acted like the victors afterwards, as Vic went back to his corner, and his cutman did some mopup work. We’d go to the cards.

In the TV opener, Mexico’s Antonio DeMarco (21-1 coming in) met Anges Adjaho (from Benin, West Africa; 25-1 entering) in a lightweight tangle. DeMarco sent his man down with a straight left, which put him down, on his own volition in the ninth. He went to take a knee, and then DeMarco advanced on him, and hit him behind the head with a weak left. Adjaho complained, then turned on his belly, and buried his head in his gloves. He was hoping the ref would DQ DeMarco for a foul, but the ref didn’t cooperate. The ref counted, and reached a ten count. Game over for Adjaho. The official time was 2:59 of the ninth. The ref Tellis Assemenios explained himself to Jim Gray after. The ref seemed a bit confused, but did say he didn’t see the knee touch the ground. “I’d like to see the replay,” he admitted. “The knee’s not down,” the ref said, excitedly, as he saw the replay. The loser said he was indeed on a knee to Gray and also said he was hurt, badly, from the blow behind the head. “I thought I was winning the fight,” he said. The judges had it a draw to that point, FYI. Press row saw Adjaho up, all three scorers (Jake Donovan Santos Perez, Karl Freitag).

Anony:  THAT WAS A GOOD FIGHT! and props to Agbeko. He ADJUSTED his style to beat Vic fair and square. I loved his two steps back and right punch. He fooled Vic several times with that. So the trick man got tricked back. Donaire and Agbeko is a fight to look forward. Agbeko talked very well, very humble words to his country. Ghana should be very proud of him.

TotoyBato:  EXPOSED!!! Vic has no skill and no class. Shaw should drop this pathetic thug. Then again Shaw is also pathetic, he can't even pull off a robbery, I sensed that they tried. Don King is the Don and the King of boxing promoters. Adjaho is just stupid, but anyway he is bound to be tagged again and KO'd by DeMarco if the fight went on. DeMarco should have let his hands go, he was unimpressive in this fight, he could have lost.

DaveB:  I give congratulations to Agbeko for fighting a hard tough fight and being a gracious winner. Vic just didn't fight like the boxer/puncher he was in the last three fights. I think he got too much into the hate thing and only tried to go out there to knock the guy out. Dumb, dumb, dumb. He just reverted back to the fighter that was easy to beat. Then he had the gall to say he made and error for fighting that way, when he fought that way for the entire fight. What happened to the jab his corner was telling him to use or keeping his right hand high? He kept trying to throw the left without setting it up. Looks like he hasn't learned much after all. Too bad, he brought some excitement to the lower divisions. As far as Agbeko it is hard to tell how good he is by this fight as far as him fighting other 118 pounders. He is very tough though that is for sure.

Fe'Roz:  Agbeko used his straight right the way B-Hop would to disrupt the rythym of Vic, whose one dimensional skills (his straight left) are continuing to fall short as he moves up. I don't think he threw enough jabs to tenderize a chicken let alone freeze the elusive JA and set up his left hand. He lost by more than the 114-113 cards.....and unless someone forces him to once again jab before crossing....the losses begun by Donaire are just beginning to add up

brownsugar:  both men fought a wild spastic brawl,.. but Agbeko was far more accurate and his left hook along with his straight right which worked with the regularity of a Muhamad Ali jab for a while.. Vic gained some momentum late,.. but Agbeko wasn't about to give up,.. especially after getting his marching orders from Ghana's President Elect,... "win or die trying",.. the fight had the atmosphere of a superfight the way Showtime produced it,.. althought you could see many empty seats at ringside...it almost felt like old times with Don King grinning ear to ear after the fight,..the other Ghanian was beating Demarco untill he pulled a punk move by pretending to be gutshot by a glancing rabbit punch from Demarco after he suddenly stopped fighting (because of a hard shot) and attempted to take a knee in the middle of the ring,... tough break,. Demarco will undoubtedly continue to be Showtimes go-to-guy to co-headline future Showtime events...that along with Brock Lesners streetfight-style beatdown of Frank Mir,.. made for a pretty decent night of fistic action...

Nana:  YES! I told you all! OOOOoooooooohhhhhhhhhhh how sweet it is, Vic getting his arse kicked! I LOVE it! My disappointment is in his lack of needing a stretcher and ambulance.

Big Daddy Was Wrong:  Congrats to Agbeko.. Another Great Boxer from Ghana. Vic is NOT overrated. People have to respect that he ALWAYS takes on Tough Challenges. He's not a Bantamweight and should move back down to Jr. BW. I think that fighting Nonito would make the most Dollars and Sense.

#1 Pacfan "R.I.P. Arturo Gatti":  Still a bit hungover from last night, Vic ran into the straight right hand and was stopped in his tracks. The only difference with Vic is that his chin held up which tells me Agbeko is not the heavy hitter like I thought he was. I knew this guy was going to get sent back where he belonged and that's back to Flyweight. There are double standards when it comes to moving up or down in weight.

#1 Pacfan "R.I.P. Arturo Gatti":  Repost:This fight is looking to be an even money fight. I'm going with Agbeko in the 4th round by KO. Agbeko's gameplan is simple sit back and catch him lunging in. He has great head movement and is very ellusive which will be the key factor for him. The problem is Agbeko does not have a signature counter punch that can affect Vic so he has to hit him with the straight right while Vic is off balance. As for Darchiyan, he must keep being aggressive and fight him in the inside that would take away Agbeko's physical advantages. I don't think Vic will have the power to take him out so he must win rounds early because Agbeko is a durable fighter with great stamina. The question is, will the move up in weight make a significant affect of Darchiyan? I believe so, he will lose to Agbeko and finally make a fight with Donaire back down to Flyweight. donputo69 R.I.P TRUE WARRIOR GATTI:  i knew it...darchiyan is overrated...i didnt watch the fight...but what im reading here from the tss u is that agbeko schooled him...i never liked darchiyan...he's wack...DAAAAAMN GATTI....WHY?..WHY TOO SOON...DAMN...holla back!!!

Bosston:  Agbeko clearly won this fight & i was surprised that the judges scored it so close... also, Kimmons was incompetent and totally mangled that knock down? call in the 7th... Bottom line, Darcho has no business moving up in weight & doesn't have the power to compete above fly ...his tactics also leave him wide open to attack, counter, cross, etc. RIP Gatti & Arguello

Real Talk R.I.P. to the Gladiator of boxing THUNDER:  See .....this is why I didn't want to pick on this match . I knew lil to nothing Agbeko . Vic should've got inside and roughoused him . Probably would've got his whole head peeled back from butts . Vic needs to learn how to fight on the inside .......and some defense . That's the handycap of power though . You start to depend on it like a substance and your skills become backburner . This sets you up to get outboxed when your power leaves you stranded . Vic looked sloppy , unfocused , and dumb . I say this with no emotion , just calling it like I see it . To Evil Vic : GET BACK ON BOXING ........ JAB.......MOVE......PUT YOUR HANDS UP ..........THINK . Stop making your opponents job easy . Just because you don't KO or huet him with one shot don't mean you stop chipping and chopping!!!! I still like lil Evil Vic , he took a L, but hey .....$__t happens . Learn from it and get better for it .
Sunday Jul 12, 2009 12:27:03 PM
GOAT:  RIP AUTURO! Man this, Alexis, McNair and MJ are tough losses in a short period of time. EVERYONE liked Gatti as a fighter! Vic is too one demesional. He would have been knocked out if he fought someone with a little better offense or power. Man, I still messed up about Gatti.
Sunday Jul 12, 2009 01:49:02 PM
brownsugar:  I don't think Vic was exposed or ruined,.. like so many others already wrote,.. he took it too personal this time,.. picked on a guy who knew how to get under his skin and the psyche war backfired on him,.. he still looked stronger at the end of the fight,..with a litter perserverance and some much needed adjustments he may be able to change the outcome in a rematch,.. it's only boxing,.. Vic made a bold gamble,.. but his bluffing didn't play into the fight like he expected.. Agbeko was more determined than scared.

#1 Pacfan "R.I.P. Arturo Gatti":  Very well said RealTalk, GOAT, brownsugar, I think that everytime he faces fighters with this caliber he comes up short. He has no alternative when it comes to gameplan. When he faced Donaire he was matched up with a guy with superb boxing skills and power behind it and so Vic got picked off easily. Mijares also had great boxing skill it's just that he couldn't hurt Darchinyan at all and Mijares did not avoid the straight lefts all night. Arce was be the best style for Vic, both guys were aggressive and it came down to who's punches were harder and it would be Vic's. So when Vic is faced with a guy who counters well, ellusive, atleast one heavy hand, and a fighter who is tough(Ghanians) to last in the late rounds. That style of fighter's Vic's kryptonite, unless he learns to box or adapt to a fighters style.
Sunday Jul 12, 2009 02:45:59 PM
Real Talk @ #1 Pacfan:  I think it boils down to Evil Vic . If he boxes , uses his jab , moves his head and feet and use defense he's a force ala Mijares fight .. If he comes lunging in wild , winging shots, head hunting he's a sitting duck and becomes just a puncher . Boxing is a Sweet Science , you have to have intelligence as well as ability . This is what seperates the cream from the rest . Dueces
Sunday Jul 12, 2009 03:56:40 PM
c:  real talk @ #1 Pacfan - If does all that you just listed, he's not Vic Darchinyan. The Mijares fight is not a good measure, Mijares couldn't hurt anyone with a knee to the groin. Darchinyan had a field day with him. You can do those what if scenarios with any fighter. For example: "if Marvis Frazier would have used head movement and ring generalship, he could have lasted another round against Tyson." Or you could simply say "if Agbeko would have used his jab, head and feet, defense and thrown shorter left and right hand shots, he would have KO'd Darchinyan in 2 rounds." Well he didnt and neither did Darchinyan, so he is not a force.

ali @ #1Pacfan:  Hey are you a fan of Donaire I just watch a couple of his fight dude is nice I think if Vic would have fought him again he would have got he ass whoop.
Monday Jul 13, 2009 12:18:38 AM
Nana:  YES! My only dissatisfaction was that Vic didn't go out on his back and with the stretcher as a prop. I love Agbeko for beating this jerk. I have hated Vic since he emerged on the scene and now he's gone. Put a fork in this idiot, because there's nowhere to go now. Thnak you Agbeko, my hero!
Monday Jul 13, 2009 07:06:44 AM
Anony t #1 Pacfan:  Aside of the 4th round knockout, you nailed it perfectly. I guess Agbeko read your post before the fight. I like the guy, looking forward to watch him fighting again. To those blasting Vic Darchinyan... what's up with you? He did a great fight and always aggressive. I know he has an odd style but it is his own style. First time I saw him fighting (against Donaire) I thought he deserved his ass kick (because of his attitude and style) but then you come to realize he truly is an aggressive fighter and entertaining. Like I said before, THIS WAS A GOOD FIGHT! PROPS TO BOTH BOXERS!
Monday Jul 13, 2009 08:35:07 AM
rudy:  I'm sure Vic would love a rematch w/Nonito now. Donaire whoops him again. Put that fight at the Oracle right up the street from Donaire's hometown of San Leandro! Props to King Kong, easily defeated the trash talking Armenian. What power?

#1 Pacfan "R.I.P. Arturo Gatti":  @MMLee, I don't think he was in a FOY candidate but I think he won the KOY when he faced Vic. I could be wrong, but yeah bring on the Middleweight Tournament. @Anony, I wish fighters would read our post sometimes because some of us at times can come up with great gameplans. We may not be experienced fighters( some ex-boxers on here i think) who fought in the ring or trainers who have been there; but we read and feed the hell out of our brain to become knowledgable. All we're missing is the hands on experience but then again I've been in many street fights in my prime. What's up with GBP trying to sabotage the possible Pacquiao-Cotto fight? He's trying to interfere and brainwashing Cotto maybe a move to get him in Oscar's stable. These promoters are like little kids fighting for a toy I swear.
