Legend Lost: RIP, Arturo Gatti
By Michael Woods
By no means was he the most skilled pugilist to lace up the gloves. There were scores with faster hands, swifter feet, better hand eye coordination. Defense was never his forte. In many bouts, there was a distinct absence of science displayed by the man, as he responded to an absorbed blow like a bull goaded by a runner in Pamplona. But Arturo Gatti exemplified the grit, and the neccessary stubborness in the face of adversity, along with an ample helping of raw talent, which makes a boxer an all-time great.
The Canadian-born boxer, who retired from the ring in 2007, was found dead in a hotel room in Brazil on Saturday morning. Gatti was 37 years old. He was on a second honeymoon vacation with his wife, and was found bloodied, and unconscious in his underwear. Foul play is suspected.
There will be no more comebacks for a man who made a career of the art of the comeback; Gatti's final record will stand at 40-9, with 31 KOs, and about a thousand instances when he wowed fight fans with a brand of courage that the vast majority of society could only marvel at. His type of resilience was and is exceedingly rare, and fight fans were drawn to the battler because they could identify with, and aspire to, his character. Life getting you down? No job, no money, no prospects for either? What would Gatti do? He'd keep on swinging to the bitter end, would the former super featherweight and junior welterweight champion, and would go out on his shield, for sure. The man wasn't ever looking for a soft spot to fall on the canvas, in his sixteen-year pro career. He didn't have a hint of the dog in him. He'd only mutter 'No Mas' during training, when he needed to cut that last five pounds. "I love to bleed, love it," he once said. "People at ringside bring umbrellas to my bouts so they won't get splashed." And they left the better for it, beyond perhaps having to toss out a light-colored top if they were in the front row, and got splashed. They left knowing that they saw a trait exemplified which would serve them well, if incorporated into their own life: they saw fortitude in excess, a magnificent display worth far more than they'd ponied up at the box office.
Many a man, once he reaches a certain age, starts to ponder his imminent mortality, and begins to contemplate the wake he will leave once his ship sails into the horizon, and beyond. Who am I? Who will remember me? Gatti can rest easy, TSS is certain, with the knowledge that as long as there is a YouTube, and boxing fans, plenty of folks will remember "Thunder," who thrilled us with his bucket o' blood specials with rival Micky Ward, three tradefests that took place in 2002 and 2003. Gatti went 2-1 against Ward, but there were many other Gatti fights that will not exit the memory banks of the fans who saw him bloodied, battered, nearly blind, but still refusing to take no for an answer. Time and again, he'd find himself without the benefit of sight, basically, cheated again by the enswell, and yet he seemed alllergic to the words, "I quit."
There may be some who will look at his record, and cite his nine losses, and say that he doesn't deserve a place in Canastota. Not me, not no way, not no how. Gatti's heart loomed as large as any man gracing the Hall of Fame currently, and he always strived to deliver the fans a thrilling show.
Yes, Arturo had a Hall of Fame heart, and Hall of Fame guts, and that is enough for me. Rest in peace, Thunder, we will treasure the memories you left us.

OMFG! I actually have tears in my eyes. This is one of the saddest 6 months I've ever experienced... first arguello, that's one thing, but Gatti is my generation, a modern day hero, a great guy, and someone that even Bhop mentions from time to time ('it wasn't no Gatti ward, but it got the job done...") . He will be remembered for Gatti Ward, and trying twice to fight welterweight agst oscar de la hoya and baldomir or was it gomez? This is really really bad, a bad week or month. pc out!

Arturo was close friends with a Southern Jersey farming family, who Arturo is now with there son who was also killed in a tragic way. A real shame to see someone with the greatest boxing skills I have ever seen, die so young and probably over something stupid. Arturo, at his close friends viewing, took off his championship ring and give it to his friends father in memory of his son. Thats something everybody sould know about this fine young man.

My favorite moment is when he went to a Cotto (i believe it was him) press conference, and presented cotto with a chain or something. He was wearing this fancy baller' suit and sunglasses, went in front of the crowd and said "hey, i'm in the press conference!" as if he was surprised. Gracious fighter, great man, had a bigger heart than any. Gatti and Chico RIP!

What in the hell is wrong with all these woman im thinking about breaking up with my girl its getting ridiculous. Real sad it don't make no damn sense im not a big fan but I love to watch him fight cause he gave every thing he had in that square circle and did'nt know what it was to wave the white flag. I hope people just reminisce about all the great moments he gave us and not about the times he came up short in the ring R.I.P. Arturo Gatti.

Good lord. Another loss. To say that Arturo was a fighter is the understatement of the year. Our sweet science is taking a beating this year. You know, every time I wake up to news like this I realize how truly insignificant arguments about rankings, P4P lists, championships and win ratios are. Rest in Peace Arturo. You made us proud.

I am also like many of us on this Board a former Boxer, I fought out of Jimmy DuPree's gym in Jersey City N.J.. As I got married and had children I had to get out of the game. AND just in time Gatti and his family opened up the RINGSIDE LOUNGE In Jersey City N.J., and that is when Artie came up and BLEW UP! This little Canadian dude was the talk of the fight game in my Home town, Anyone that knew they were gonna fight this Kid was worried. He once got in trouble in Union city with a police officer because he had a little to much to drink, But eventually all charges were dropped because he had Charisma and Charm and spoke to the Cop and apologized, We just recently lost another champ, But this guy Truly broke my heart. Gatti may have been from Canada BUT He will be remembered as a Warrior From Tonnelle ave. Jersey City. The true Streets of Pain. He was NOT a personal friend of mine but every chance I had to say hello I would, And he would greet you with a big smile and a handshake and say "Yeah! I remember you" and he made you feel as if you knew him all your life! God rest your Soul Gatti! True Warrior, Son of Jersey City New Jersey! Bell's will toll for you Champ

Gatti was a soldier . Cool peoples who always wanted to give the fans in the crowd a good show . He and the crowd were one . Gladiator in every since of the word . When someone like this leaves us , someone we adored , connected and felt a kinship with they take a part of you with them . The world seems less exciting , kind of like when Bernie Mac left . It ...... drains you . I said a prayer for Arturo "Thunder" Gatti and his family . I offer my condolences to the kids . They should be proud of their father . Dueces

HBO better pay a tribute or I'm going to throw a fit. Arturo carried them for years and I believe he has been on HBO more than any other fighter. Showtime didn't mention squat during their Vic fight and I was rips*it over it. RIP Arturo Gatti. You belong in Canastota. Period. And if your wife killed you, they should strap her to the chair NOW.

In the wake of the horrific news of Arturo’s murder, myself and others in my little community would like to express our most heartfelt condolences to the family of Arturo Gatti. We fell in love with Arturo for his boundless passion for the sport, and his incredible tenacity rang true with our people…. farmers, factory workers and blue collar workers. Strong, hard working, and tough as nails, but a gentleman at heart. Never disrespectful in a fight to someone who didn’t deserve it. His nationality made no difference…he was one of us.
When the sky darkens, lightening flashes in the sky, and the thunder rolls….we will think of him….our fighter, our last true warrior stolen from our loving arms. R.I.P Arturo.

When my son woke me at 2am and said that Artura Gatti was dead, it felt like I had been stabbed in the heart. It hurt me as though it was one of my family members. I loved Gatti and whenever he fought, my husband and I was in on the action from round one. To all the fans and family members I would like to say " God needed a HANDSOME angel and Gatti was his number ONE choice", as he will always be number 1 in my heart. There will never be another boxer that I as a women would watch now!!!!! I know I am not suppose to judge, but to the Brazilian government, strap that woman to a pole and let the animals feed off of her like a dead carcass, because she is not deserving of the title wife. To the Gatti family, please let Artura kid or kids always remember that he was "A PEOPLES CHAMPION AND THAT WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE AND MISS HIM".

Is It Only Money That Matters?
"Who refuses to take a drug test worth $40 million?" For the American psyche, money is everything. It transcends what is right or what is wrong. For a certain amount of money, I'll do anything. Manny is Filipino, and he cannot fathom that kind of thinking. Is that what capitalism should be? I can't understand why $40 million should dictate your personality. Simply put, Pacquiao has his own dignity and refuses to be manipulated into taking $40M and giving his (butt) to anyone who wants it." ---TSS reader "Tony" informs readers of a possible cultural difference which causes certain peoples to interpret Pacquiao's refusal to cater to Mayweather's testing demands (photo by Chris Cozzone)
