Layla McCarter Wins 50th Pro Fight & Keeps Titles

By David A. Avila

LAS VEGAS-A seven-year itch was cured by Layla McCarter who beat Japan’s improved Fujin Raika and kept both lightweight world titles by unanimous decision on Friday by using her whole bag of tricks.

“She’s a lot better now,” said McCarter of Raika.

McCarter won the rematch of a fight that took place in 2002 before a crowd of more than 1,200 at the Southpoint Casino and Hotel with jabs, angles and pinpoint punching that had Raika (18-6-1) bleeding but not quitting. McCarter kept her GBU and WBA lightweight titles and more importantly fought in her 50th pro fight. Less than a dozen female fighters have ever accomplished that feat.

“I thought I was a little rusty,” said McCarter (32-13-5) who had not fought since August 2008 when she beat Spain’s Loly Munoz by decision. “Once the fought went inside the rust just seemed to go away.”

McCarter set the pace in the first round with jabs and right hands to the body and head. Raika landed a pinpoint one-two but did little else but stalk McCarter who was moving side-to-side and giving angles.

In the second round Raika’s head seemed to be doing more damage than her punches. But some follow-up left hooks scored for the Japanese fighter. McCarter used her jab but seemed aware of Raika’s head that kept bobbing in.

McCarter re-established her jab in the third round, but at the end of the stanza, McCarter let loose with some punishing shots while Raika tried to keep up. It was McCarter’s best round early in the fight.

The Japanese fighter increased the pressure in the fourth round though she took punishment coming in. A perfect one-two by Raika seemed to upset McCarter who retaliated with about six punches at full force with many landing.

The fifth round was Raika’s best round as she found a home for her left hand. Though McCarter was able to counter periodically, that left hand by Raika landed several times with force. McCarter unleashed a barrage at the end of the round but was it wasn’t enough to win the round.

The champion regained control in the sixth round by fighting when she wanted and forcing Raika to wait. A right uppercut and left hook by McCarter were her best punches in the round.

A clash of heads in the seventh round opened a cut on Raika’s right eye. When the fight resumed a right uppercut and right hand rocked Raika before the bell rung. It was the first time Raika seemed hurt.

McCarter seems to slip into overdrive as she pounded Raika with uppercuts and lefts and rights to the body. A left hook to the liver seemed to stun the Japanese fighter for a moment.

The Japanese fighter turned things around in the ninth round but paid for it with some brutal shots. Raika stuck her head in the middle and pounded at McCarter’s head and body. Blood seeped from Raika’s nose but she returned to her corner with confidence.

In the final round Raika found more energy as she chased McCarter and pounded whatever was available. McCarter continued finding openings but an accidental head butt stopped the fight momentarily. Raika seemed anguished but referee Tony Weeks told her she was not cut. The fight resumed and both slugged it out in a corner. Though Raika landed some punches she took some uppercuts and right hands for her effort. Both continued slugging a few seconds after the final bell, and then hugged.

All three judges scored it 100-90 for McCarter.

“I just stuck with the jab,” said McCarter, who is considered one of the best female fighters in the world pound for pound. “I wanted to knock her out but she was coming in aggressive. I didn’t want to do anything stupid. I knew I was ahead.”

McCarter said she plans to return to the ring in September.

Preliminaries

In the semi main event Brazil’s Carlos Nascimento (24-1, 20 KOs) came in with a gaudy record and was almost ambushed by rugged veteran Juan Pablo Montes De Oca in a 10 round junior middleweight fight. Both battered each other almost every round and in the end it was the Brazilian who was given the win by unanimous decision 97-92 twice and 96-93. Montes De Oca was crushed by the decision.

“I thought I won the fight,” said Montes De Oca (9-17-2, 6 KOs) who served as Floyd Mayweather Jr’s sparring partner. “I hurt him at least four times.”

Usually Montes De Oca comes in brawling and  dispenses with tactics. But in this fight he used angles, timing and slipped and countered with some sizzling uppercuts. The Brazilian had no answer on several occasions.

“I took all his punches. He never hurt me,” said Montes De Oca. “I jabbed and fought him on the inside and outside.”

Nascimento was the aggressor in the second half of the fight but was confused by Montes De Oca’s tactics. Many times he was caught coming in but the judges liked the aggression and not the counterpunching.

“I feel sorry for the judges,” said Montes De Oca.

Once a top welterweight contender Brazilian transplant Antonio Mesquita (35-1, 27 KOs) returned to the ring after a 19-month layoff to face Mexico City’s Hugo Correa (9-4). During the press conference the fiery Brazilian promised a knockout within 45 seconds. It took exactly 2:10 of the first round to send Correa to dreamland with a right hand from hell that forced referee Russell Mora to immediately stop the fight.

Mesquita’s last pro fight was in a one-sided loss to Lamont Peterson in January 2008. In this fight he wasted no time in looking for the knockout. Within the first 40 seconds while both tangled up inside, as the referee ordered a break Mesquita landed a right over Mora’s arm to knock down Correa. Mora counted to eight and brushed the gloves off, then deducted a point from Mesquita for the flagrant blow. It didn’t matter, during the next 30 seconds an exchange in the neutral corner created an opening for Mesquita’s big right hand to end the fight.

A junior featherweight bout between Las Vegas fighter Omar Valencia (1-3-1) and L.A.’s Jose Pacheco (2-6-5) was a four round slugfest that seesawed. The judges scored it a majority decision for Valencia  38-38, 39-37 twice.

In a junior bantamweight bout Rodrigo Romero won his pro debut against David Springer (1-1-3) in a close four round bout. The judges scored it 39-37 for Springer and 39-37 twice for Romero.

Peter Egley:  Props to McCarter. It sounds like it was indeed an exciting fight but she completely dominated the scoring. Raika should be proud hopefully instead of hurt by the loss. I hope there was a bit of money from the fight for both women. McCarter beat one of the best, and is WBA Lightweight Champion of the World. Now if she chooses, I hope she gets Ann Saccurato, the WBC Lightweight belt holder, in the ring. McCarter is really damn good, something I never questioned. P4P best? One of them. ;)

Pete Egley/trouble man*:  Antonio Mesquita! Let's see, a bit of a John Mugabi? Anyway, Mesquita had a really good (ESPN2?) TV showing I remember. I did not know he had lost his first fight. Good to see him back in action.
Saturday Jul 4, 2009 06:50:33 AM
MisterLee:  Mugabi hagler was one helluva fight.
Saturday Jul 4, 2009 11:09:52 AM
ultimoshogun:  I wondered what ever happened to Mesquita. He disappeared after I saw him on ESPN. He reminds me of Ricardo Mayorga, he has that same machismo thing goin on.
Saturday Jul 4, 2009 12:49:02 PM
Peter Egley:  Yeah, I thought Mesquita was a definite world champ after I too saw him on ESPN. He was (is?) with Luis Tapia at the time. He did seem to disappear. I didn't see Mugabi-Hagler live but on tape. I'm thinking all "The Beast's" wins were by kayo, and then he met Terry Norris.
Saturday Jul 4, 2009 03:42:32 PM
Peter Egley:  I'm thinking is was Anthony Ivy that Mesquita got the TV shot against, won by KO. At the time he was wanting to fight DLH, Mayweather...
Saturday Jul 4, 2009 03:55:13 PM
Peter Egley:  This is a "little" unrelated, but I just read a blog on MySpace written by pro boxer Clara de la Torre that is very cool. Worth checking out. fortidudine vincimus: "by endurance we conquer." Very cool motto.
Saturday Jul 4, 2009 05:22:40 PM
ultimoshogun@Egley:  I think it was the Roast who recommended that you look up Gina Carano the MMA fighter a few days ago. I just wanted to follow up by telling you she has a huge fight coming up on Strikeforce Aug 15 on Showtime. She's fighting another killer named Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and they're headlining the event. Another name you might be familiar with is Erin Toughill the former boxer who fought Layla Ali will also be fighting on that same card. Anyway I thought I'd just let you know since you dig girl fights. I know I'll be watchin cuz Carano & Cyborg's fights have been all action thus far.
Saturday Jul 4, 2009 05:40:30 PM
Peter Egley:  Thanks for the tip - sounds interesting. It's a Showtime event, huh? Darn.
Saturday Jul 4, 2009 06:00:06 PM
The Watcher:  Woman's boxing is still around huh? I didn't think articles were still being written about them with so little interest in female boxing. They are good for about for rounds then they are just boring, no knocks or the power to do it. Kind of reminds me of Eddie Chambers slap boxing for 12 rounds.
Saturday Jul 4, 2009 07:33:16 PM
Pete Egley/trouble man*:  It gets quite a bit of coverage here thankfully, compared to the once (still?) falling empire that is The Ring Magazine - which gives it just just about zero coverage for such an expensive magazine. They gave Holly Holm some brief coverage but that's the last I know of. I'm admittedly like you, being one of the Mike Tyson generation. McCarter even thought that there would be more KO's with the standard rounds, etc. that males fight, but like Paulie Malinaggi (sp?), she can box, but not deliver a devestating punch. But I've really outgrown that era in some ways. Lucia Rijker was pretty awesome I guess when she was fighting. If you have yet to see it, Shadow Boxers is still a definitive film on women's boxing and features Rijker. And Fast Eddie is okay by me.
Sunday Jul 5, 2009 01:55:58 AM
the Roast:  Eggs over the Watcher UD8. 2 minute rounds of course.
Sunday Jul 5, 2009 08:11:52 AM
afisherg:  be interesting to see if McCarter will dare face Saccurato.
Sunday Jul 5, 2009 04:35:40 PM
Peter Egley:  I would say yes because she, though not winning, has (hey, they are replaying Oliver McCall vs Bruce Seldon right now) has faced Chevelle Hallback twice, and the very imposing Mary Jo Sanders, who has a decision loss and a draw with the afforementioned probably actual p4p best right now in Holly Holm. Saccurato - yeah, I agree. Saccurato is awesome.
Sunday Jul 5, 2009 10:52:15 PM
ultimoshogun:  Egley, how do you keep up with the current events in womens boxing? I don't know anyone who knows womens boxing like you. I'm actually quite impressed.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 12:19:27 AM
Peter Egley:  Thanks. Actually it started with catching a Laura Serrano fight on TV several years ago. Her energetic style reminded me of of Aaron Pryor. Then I caught a "Ring of their Own" PPV that Serrano (now retired - she got beat bad by Jeannine Garside). I really only know some about a half dozen female fighters. WBAN on the net is a good place to learn too. Sue Fox runs a good site, generally news, but also bios. That Cris Cyborg and Gina Carano that someone mentioned intrigues me as far as MMA. But mostly I still follow the mens boxing, mostly since Tyson first got famous. Lucked out, saw his prime.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 12:31:35 AM
Peter Egley:  Okay...I'm a fan of both McCarter and Saccurato. Neither boxer has been stopped - but there is always a first right. Both women have wins over Jelena Mrdjenovich. I think Saccurato's conditioning and power will be too much for Layla. But then I'm tired as hell at the moment. McCarter can obviously box but has no punching power. Ann has both power and ability. What do you say, Al? lol
Monday Jul 6, 2009 02:36:49 AM
AfisherG:  EGLEY: glad to know you were a fan of A Ring of Their Own...being publicist for that series that tells me we did make an impact. Saccurato put a murderous beating on Jessica R. in an epic battle a year or so ago if you recall. Lots of opponents think twice or more when they remember that.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 10:32:15 AM
Peter Egley:  Gosh, I can believe that. I think I understand McCarter has a big fanbase, and she will get in the ring with anyone but if you look at her history honestly (again, I'm a fan, too), she drops the ball against the best usually. There was a huge feud between Tapia (Luis) and Chevelle "Fists Of Steel" Hallback concerning money for a possible third fight - McCarter already 0-2 against Chevelle. I wasn't sure exactly how McCarter became WBA champ - was it against Donna Biggers? I respect Biggers, but that poor girl has taken some vicious beatings: a KO to McCarter, a complete, ugly beating by Jackie Nava, etc. McCarter could box well against Saccurato, but I don't see McCarter really winning against her. If the match does happen, I would like to see Saccurato place a ton of pressure on McCarter like Hallback did, see if she could do it (lol) the Tyson way: power. Yes, AROTO was a lot of fun the one PPV that was in my area.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 01:42:10 PM
MisterLee:  Eggs beats the Catcher, 8 rd UD, with a flash knockdown in the 5th round. :) Pc out!
Monday Jul 6, 2009 04:11:42 PM
the Roast:  @AfisherG, so, my favorite female fight fan is a publicist? Any intrest in representing a wise cracking, smart alec boxing nut? Lets do lunch.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 04:18:24 PM
afisherg@theroast:  Are you serious....?
Monday Jul 6, 2009 04:38:48 PM
Peter Egley:  I watched the rerun of ESPN2 Ringside George Foreman. It was a great show. Teddy Atlas pretty much admitted that he was afraid of Foreman when Big George got a shot at then champ Michael Moorer. C-R-U-N-C-H. I like to see a retro on 1980s heavys pre Tyson. I rather like that period.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 04:58:59 PM
the Roast:  the Roast is always serious. Do you ever get to Chicago? What are you wearing right now?
Monday Jul 6, 2009 07:52:06 PM
afisherg@theroast:  Not often enough obviously. Wearing a Sooner football t-shirt, Daisy Dukes and some leopard Jimmy Choo stilettos.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 08:00:03 PM
afisherg@theroast:  ..and a deep dark fake bake tan.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 08:19:29 PM
Peter Egley:  lol (?) Oliver McCall vs Bruce Seldon was just recently shown and it was a much better match than I remembered...I'm glad the Raika-McCarter fight was good. I unfortunately did not see it but WBAN has a slew of photos from the fight. It's difficult to pick against Layla but admittedly I was hoping Ms Raika would win. Again, I hope they made a few bucks. The money is still quite embarrassing I think for what these world class boxers put the effort in. I'm sure noted photog (not kidding) Mr. Rasner shot the match, too. Happy 233rd to the USA and number 46 to me today. Hey, hope this doesn't get clipped, but if you wanna see a great rock & roll drummer, go to youtube and type in Genevieve Grand Funk. You know, The American Band.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 08:25:38 PM
the Roast:  Eggs, uh, maybe you better come back later.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 08:28:28 PM
the Roast:  @ AfisherG...Sooner football? Oklahoma? I'm a sucker for the accent. I dont know who Jimmy Choo is but I'm jealous. Fake bake....tan lines? Is it getting hot in here?
Monday Jul 6, 2009 08:32:29 PM
the Roast:  Sorry Eggs, Happy Birthday to the King of all Women's fight fans. You know what they say, you're not getting older, you're getting longer! If AfisherG comes back, amscray. I saw her first! We're comin to your town, we'll help you party down!
Monday Jul 6, 2009 08:45:12 PM
afisherg@theroast:  Sooner born and a Sooner bred and when I die I'll be a Sooner dead, and Bob Stoops will still make more money than Sherri Coales, roflmao. Jimmy Choo makes expensive shoes like Manolo Blahniks...didn't you ever watch Sex and The City?
Monday Jul 6, 2009 08:54:51 PM
MisterLee:  Dude, this convo is creeping me out! is it egg's birthday! happy bday man! i'm beginning to know who these women are w/o actually having seen them fight yet, tho i intend to. ya know boxingscene website, forums, video trading block discussion recently in the last week have made an important post on OTHER sites that also have good boxing download vids like unifiedchamp period com and others. It's worth a try, you may get the pleasure of finding all your recent and old fights of women's boxing and stuff. take care! :)
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:00:36 PM
the Roast:  @AfisherG, not so much on the Sex in the City. I'm more of an Eastbound and Down kind of guy. I do love Jim Ross though.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:03:22 PM
afisherg@theroast:  you probably didn't see the table flip on Bravo Real Housewives of NJ...stellar moment for all woman kind.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:13:40 PM
the Roast:  ( surprised, pulling pants up ) Caveman! Wh-what are you doing in here? I was just, uh, talking to AfisherG. Yeah, how bout that Andre Ward huh? He's pretty good......
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:13:57 PM
the Roast:  @AfisherG No, I didnt catch that. I do enjoy some of the VH1 reality shows. Charm School is OK. Did you see that fight between New York and Mr. Boston? That was a disputed draw.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:17:56 PM
MisterLee:  wtf is going on here! The caveman goes to milan to find marvin hagler...
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:26:39 PM
ultimoshogun:  the Roast is a stud! Happy B-Day Egley! I'll leave you two alone now.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:33:16 PM
the Roast:  @Caveman, The Roast does not live on boxing alone. All I ask is to find a good female fight fan, have a few laughs, see what develops. A little song, a little dance, we take off our pants....
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:36:10 PM
MisterLee @ the roast:  I c... i just have the assumption that Afisherg is a male, and that you're just f'n with each other and making crap up. But hey , whatever floats your boat, says Ali that Goat, that shall be the quote of note, please do not denote nor promote what i wrote. have fun the roast! :)
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:40:25 PM
Peter Egley@MisterLee:  Thanks much! I'll see what's goin' on at boxrec forums. I know it's a different article here, but it's cool 'bout "Fast Eddie" Chambers recent success. The guy looks like he's trained hard.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:41:11 PM
the Roast:  @ultimoshogun, Hey! what did you think of my domination of Jerry? How do you like that guy? Like McEnroe says " He cannot be serious! " He's gotta be pulling our chains.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:43:47 PM
the Roast:  @ MisterLee, AfisherG has identified herself in the past as a female. At least I hope so. Awwww dont wreck it for me. Oh well, the heart wants what the heart wants.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:50:03 PM
ultimoshogun@the Roast:  Very funny stuff. I was thinkin the same thing about Jerry. Maybe he just likes to stir the pot to get reactions out of us. He can't be serious about McNeely.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 09:57:26 PM
MisterLee:  Yeah i dunno, the kramer bit was crazy. you wanna get some kenny rogers chicken? haha... i guess i went in some epic battles when afisherg dogged on radam, i jumped to his rescue, we had a few words and poems back and forth, he/she sometimes throws abrasive or weird comments, maybe the body of a woman, but in my head, the heart/head of a man, not always to me the best boxing fan, that and her fake tan, but who am i ? i'm sam i am , who likes green eggs (holla peter!) and ham.
Monday Jul 6, 2009 10:13:34 PM
Caveman scratches head and does a jig:  Oooo... wow, that was a CB if i've ever seen one. My bad roast ! you were simply spreading some drippings from the roast, and i was turning up the oven temperature and banging pots like monkey. I"ll let you and fisherprice to yourselves next time. pc out!
Monday Jul 6, 2009 11:53:03 PM
fan of the sport:  Good to see a womens match in vegas let alone the usa. Seems like others are running abroad. She has a great record. looks like the real deal. You have to wonder when they run to mexico or out of the country to fight if its all just a pick and choose your opponent game to put themselves back on a map or stack their record...anyway good job Layla
Tuesday Jul 7, 2009 02:14:41 AM
AfisherG:  AFisherG is a female end of story.
Tuesday Jul 7, 2009 08:01:37 AM
the Roast:  @AfisherG...I never had a doubt. You'll have to excuse my pal MisterLee. His heart is in the right place. He's a little younger and maybe does not know how to accept the opinions of an intelligent, strong woman such as yourself. I like to get on here and talk boxing and laugh it up whenever possible. It's all good. Look forward to more comments from you in the near future. Be careful on those high heels. Who are Bob Stoops and Sherri Coales anyway? The Roast is off to the tennis courts. See ya!
Tuesday Jul 7, 2009 03:14:09 PM
AfisherGback@the Roast:  Bob Stoops is the football coach at the University of Oklahoma and Sherri Coales is the University of Oklahoma ladies basketball coach....
Tuesday Jul 7, 2009 08:44:08 PM
ultimoshogun:  Roast!! I thought you new your college ball. Michigan is the winningest team of all time not to mention best winning %.
Wednesday Jul 8, 2009 02:04:38 AM
the Roast:  Ultimo....Nah, I dont follow the college sports. Only March Madness. I follow the pros around here. Bears, Bulls, and White Sox. No Cubs. Michigan did cost me some money back in '89-'90, when they beat the Flying Illini in the final seconds. That one hurt.

Not Hip To The Hype
"Haye has said that without the hype, boxing is boring. This tells you something about him as a fighter and as a man. And maybe something about his low expectations of his own value as a fighter. Why isn't his skill good enough? Which audience is he trying to impress? When I watch fights, I watch the contest, the skill, the drama, the match-up. Screw the circus hype."---TSS reader Mortcola, giving thumbs down on David Haye and his pre-fight antics
