If Borges were this ref: "Dude, Travis Walker just knocked you down. Imagine what a Klitschko might do!"

Arreola Promoter Goossen Fed Writers Pasta, And Much More

By Ron Borges

The present state of heavyweight boxing in America makes the Era of the Lost Heavyweights back in the time of Tim Witherspoon, Greg Page, Michael Dokes, Tony Tubbs, Mike Weaver look like the Golden Age of boxing. Cris Arreola would like to change that.

Frankly, there’s no real reason to hope that he will but he and his promoter, Dan Goossen, were out beating the bushes (actually the table cloth) Tuesday at an Italian restaurant in Sherman Oaks, Ca., trying to goose WBC champion Vitali Klitschko into giving the undefeated but untested Arreola a title shot. Considering Arreola’s conditioning issues, keeping him away from a restaurant would seem to be the best strategy but Goossen knows most journalists, like most armies, work best when well fed.

This press conference to announce nothing came only days before the leading American heavyweight hopeful, Eddie Chambers (34-1), faces off against undefeated Russian Alexander Dimitrenko (29-0) in a WBO elimination fight in Hamburg, Germany to find the next challenger for Wladimir Klitschko. Goossen’s time might have been better spent chasing Chambers around but nobody wants to fight anybody any more, which is one reason Arreola is 27-0 with 24 knockouts yet nobody outside his nearest and dearest have the slightest clue who he is.

In a boxing sense, neither does Goossen. Arreola’s biggest victory was stopping perennial also-ran Jameel McCline two months ago. His only other remotely notable victory was a win by disqualification over Chazz Witherspoon, whose only claim to fame is he isn’t as good as his uncle Tim was. So what does that tell us about Cris Arreola?

Nothing, frankly.

Yet the lack of a resume has never stopped Goossen from arguing a case for his fighters and Tuesday was no exception. He reminded the assembled that he’s more resilient than Carmen Basilio, insisting Arreola could pack Dodger Stadium if he could just lure a champion into a ring there.

“If there is a man that can sell 40,000 or more seats in L.A., it’s Cristobal Arreola,’’ Goossen said with a straight face. “We’d love to fight at Dodger Stadium and it will happen.’’

Only if the Dodgers sign Arreola and he goes after an opposing pitcher. In theory, perhaps, if one of the Klitschko brothers agreed to come to L.A. to fight Arreola it’s a possibility but so is Lennox Lewis coming to L.A. to fight Arreola. They're both possibilities because all three men are still alive. Beyond that, as the Klitschkos like to say, “Nyet!’’

“I believe that the most important heavyweight fighter is sitting here in front of you today,’’ Goossen said. One was left to assume he meant Arreola as there were no other heavyweights sitting in front of anyone in Sherman Oaks.

“We’ve seen Wladimir Klitschko, his brother Vitali and (WBA champion) Nikolai Valuev and none of them have captured the hearts and attention of America. Cristobal is the most important heavyweight in the world because he has all the intentions of bringing that heavyweight title back to America.

We believe he would knock out any heavyweight champion right now because of his fighting style. The biggest challenge and the only challenge right now in America is Cristobal Arreola.’’

Those are brave words considering that not too long ago Cristobal Arreola was on the floor with the less than formidable Travis Walker standing over him. To be fair, Arreola got up from this indignity and dropped Walker three times before stopping him in the third round but it is difficult to come up with a scenario where Travis Walker is standing over the brothers Klitschko unless he’s delivering lunch to their table.

Still, Goossen has always been a persistent salesman and he insisted Arreola would be fighting in L.A. by the fall (which is likely) and against “a world champion,’’ which is not.

“We’ve been aggressive in trying to make fights with Valuev and both Klitschkos but right now they’re just making a business decision,’’ Goossen said as if that differentiated them from every other boxer aroundtoday. “They want the money in Europe and they’re not taking the challenges that the fans want to see. But there’s money here. I believe Cristobal against any of the world champions could sell out Dodger Stadium.’’

That seems unlikely frankly but one thing that might help give such talk at least the appearance of legitimacy would be if Arreola would get the appearance of a professional boxer. Although admittedly a tough guy, Arreola has more spare tire on him than you find at a Goodyear plant. At 6-4, he weighed a loose 255 for McCline. Wladimir Klitschko also weighs 255. He just wears that weight in different places.

Goossen, however, is never ill-prepared. He anticipated some smarmy freeloader might raise a weighty question between bites of linguine and insisted, “”All I care about is our fighter being in great shape. I don’t care what he weighs. Cristobal is in great shape right now and that’s all that matters.

“The people who don’t believe in Cristobal are going to see he is the heavyweight that will bring the division back to prominence.’’

Maybe he will, but not until somebody outside of his grocer recognizes him.

In that regard Arreola’s trainer, Henry Ramirez, said a strength and conditioning coach had been hired by Arreola for the first time. He insisted this was a sign that he was taking his job more seriously. If he’s right, maybe Goossen will be to. But somehow the memory of Travis Walker standing over Arreola lingers like bad meat sauce.

For his part, Arreola complained he’d been pushed to the side in favor of David Haye, the former undisputed cruiserweight champion who was set to fight Wladimir Klitschko until a back injury forced a postponement of their scheduled June 20 match.

“David Haye hasn’t fought anyone,’’ he said. “I don‘t think David Haye has done anything to deserve a shot at that title.’’

If the former undisputed cruiserweight champion of the world hasn’t done anything to deserve a shot at the title what has a guy whose biggest win is over Jameel McCline done?

Thus far, it seems, eat lunch.

brownsugar:  Strongly disagree with Borge's highly opinionated article,.. (can never blame the man for biting his tongue),..as far as opposition is concerned,.. Chris is knocking out the same caliber bums as Klits (with the noteworthy exception of Chagaev),.. and several fighters who have less power than Travis Walker have stood over the muscular champ after serving him a knuckle sandwich for lunch... very subjective article,.. and it's finer points cuts both ways,..

ali @ brownsugar:  I agree with you the Klits fought the same type of fighters and there way to the top if they giving Haye a chance they should give Arreola he deserves it more.

Robertfranco:  Damn seems like the writer has it in for chris. He acts like chris got hurt from that knock down. Anyways chris is number one even if he doesn't look like a bodybuilder. All the doubters will see.
Wednesday Jul 1, 2009 05:26:32 PM
hm:  he's right about nobody wanting to fight anybody anymore. back in the day, to get a title shot u had to earn a title shot.

RIVERSIDE:  typical borge writing, i need to give my boy cristobal the benefit of the doubt, i'd like to see him fight david tua before he fight one of the klitchkos,

Peter Egley:  I just think Cristobal Arreola is gonna get whacked out - maybe not. I know he catches crap for his weight, but he is also not likely to be a Commander 'Vander and be able to dwell in the land of giants successfully. But if he does, watch out for the George Foreman-inspired Cristobal Arreola Pasta Maker. lol

Big Daddy Does'nt Need A Great Brown Hope:  Either Klitscko Brother would WRECK Cris. As much as would love to see Mexican HW Champ.. I've already seen this Show. This is Alex Garcia (From San Fernando) all over again.

Isaiah:  I just want to bring up that 2 guys that have beaten Wladmer can hit hard! I'm talking about Corrie Sanders and Lamont Brewster. I don't know about Ross Purity, Wlad's first loss, but he could probaly hit a bit to. I don't know what this stuff is about guys with less power then Travis Walker standing over a Klitschko brother. Vitali beat the crap out of Ross Purity for Wladmer and in return, Wladmer beat the crap out of Chris Bryd twice after Bryd got a very lucky win over Vitali due to Vitali's shoulder injury and the only one to beat Vitali legit is Lennox Lewis who also got lucky and stopped Vitali on cuts just in time while Lewis was running on fumes. Feather fisted Chris Bryd never came close to knocking either "brutha" down and to top it off, Wladmer got sweet revenge over heavy handed Lamont Brewster, so what's this crap about guys with less power then Travis Walker knocking down a Klitschko? It never happended brownsugar, except maybe in your head! Not to mention Vitali has never once hit the canvas in the amatuers or pros and both brothers combined have beaten several top 10 contenders. Still, I would love to see Chris Arreola bring the title back to America, but the man could at least show up in decent shape and it wouldn't hurt to fight one top 10 guy first. David Haye is always in shape, but he's a loud mouth punk who's yet to fight a top 10 heavyweight himself. Still, I hope Arreola can pull off a miracle.

the Roast:  That was a very funny article, Borges. Remind me to never invite you to lunch.@ Big Daddy, nice Alex Garcia reference! Seemed like that dude was on USA Tuesday Night Fights every other week. If not him, James Thunder. I still miss that show. I pick Serena Williams by late TKO over Arreola.....
Thursday Jul 2, 2009 06:03:39 PM
Big Daddy @ the Roast:  My favorite "USA Tuesday Night Fight" memory is Larry Holmes fighting Trevor Berbick in the Parking Lot. One of the Craziest F'n things EVER!
Thursday Jul 2, 2009 08:49:08 PM
the Roast:  @Big Daddy, Yeah, that was awesome!! When he jumped off that car? They showed alot of old Duran/old Camacho/old Vinny Pazienza vs guys you never heard of from the midwest. Bowe vs Tillery was another wild moment on that show. They must have shown some good fights but I cant remember any right now!
Thursday Jul 2, 2009 09:42:55 PM
Big Daddy:  What about when viewers got to vote for Oba Carr's (an USA TNF regular) next opponent? And it was... Livingstone Bramble, a Colorful name for Colorful dude. Bramble dropped Oba early, but Carr rallied for a close decision.
Thursday Jul 2, 2009 11:25:34 PM
Peter Egley:  Bramble was always a show - I remember both Thunder and Garcia. Garcia looked to have the goods actually.
Friday Jul 3, 2009 07:49:22 AM
Rosel C. Hurley III:  Give Ray Austin another shot. He has been dominant his last four fights. It is not like the Klitschkos have not lost before, even knocked out. It is a travesty that the belts are being held in Europe. Americans are not even watching these two so called champions. Let Arreola fight Ray.
Friday Jul 3, 2009 09:19:43 AM
Nine0Nine:  Chris is one of our own here but he isn't ready for the big guys. I remember seeing him get rocked but fought back to stop some Somoan in Ontario many years ago. I thought this kid has a sack! But the big guys? that's too much too soon, I think we he would get stopped. I hope I am wrong but like Victor Ortiz, it wasn't just the step up in class, he was the main event. I think Chris should fight a couple of main events and then take on these guys cause he isn't going to get better! and he isn't going to be in any better shape either. Chris is what he is so at least lets get him mentally ready cause that's all this kid is, mentally tuff.
Friday Jul 3, 2009 10:18:15 AM
Big Daddy @Peter Egley:  That's just it Pete. Cris, like Alex Garcia, is a crude slugger that feast's on the Bottom Dwellers of the HW Division. And I don't see Cris doing very well against the Elite (What a joke) of the Division. Goosen knows that his guy is probably only good for one or two Big Paydays.
Friday Jul 3, 2009 12:52:55 PM
Pete Egley@Big Daddy (Bowe?)lol:  You like Howard Cosell, Big Daddy - you tell it like it is!!! Also: I just looked at the W. KlitschKO of Ray Austin. Ouch.

MisterLee @ anony Promotions:  "Ahem, who the hell are you? what are you doing here? You are talkin to Fraud Scareweather, do i look like i'm a stranger to you? I'm rich and i got all this money, and i'm a cash cow. you? you got 5 losses and 540 in assets. i gots a lot of money, and the irs ain't gonna touch SH(*#(*. I am not just a fighter, i'm a franchise, scareweahter and the scareweather family takes over boxing and the mainstream media. I fought all the best, chop chop corley, jesus chavez, king hernandez, they're the great boxers the sport has ever touched. I beat the best of the best. You you you... tr try trying to tell me, pacquiao is fighitng cotto with one loss? who beat mosley who beat margarito who beat golden johnson who beat nobody who eat a cheeseburger? you trying to tell me that? i'm FRAUD SCAREWEATHER, the sixth member of the Beatles, the extra member of G-unit, the extra fries with your coleslaw, i don't need this smaller guy business, he beat pacquiao. i'm fighting the p4p best fighter in the world, when i beat him on mexican independence day i will show all my scareweather-maniacs, and mexican fans that i'm am the best p4p fighter in the universe, or at least this galaxy, not just the world. the world is too small for Fraud Scareweather! I'm at least the best fighter in Earth, Saturn, Jupiter, and maybe Mars, even tho Mars got 3 losses. But hey, what can i say? I"m all about money. Counterfeit May out!!!" :)
Friday Jul 3, 2009 07:38:31 PM
Isaiah:  Just forgot to mention before that Vitlai also handed a beating to Corrie Sanders to avenge one of Wladmer's losses and that made Vitali heavyweight champion of the world. Now Wladmer is the champ and either Klitschko is being to be real tough to beat. Only the Spinks brothers are the only other set of brothers to both have been "The Man" and personally Leon Spinks would have been beaten down by either Klitschko. Can't say the same for Mike Spinks, he was at least a solid champ.

boxing genius :  Mr Ron Borgs the worlds number 1 biased writer you just committed an epic fail your quote [ Cristobal Arreola was on the floor with the less than formidable Travis Walker standing over him. To be fair, Arreola got up from this indignity and dropped Walker three times before stopping him in the third round but it is difficult to come up with a scenario where Travis Walker is standing over the brothers Klitschko unless he’s delivering lunch to their table] WOW MR RON DO YOUR FREAKING BOXING RESEARCH 2004 I RECALL TRAVIS WALKER FLOORING VITALI KLITSCKO IN SPARRING WHILE HE WAS TRAINING FOR THE CANCELLED RAHMAN BOUT!!!so next time do your research before a 24 year old genius corrects you again

Ad G:  “David Haye hasn’t fought anyone,’’ he said. “I don‘t think David Haye has done anything to deserve a shot at that title.’’ (Ahem) - except unify the division below in about 5 less fights than it has taken Arreola to get a top ranking in HW? I think those banging The Mexican Meatball's drum are doing so in hope more than anything else - were he not from that side of the Atlantic he`d be largely ignored. He doesn`t have the mobility to get past the Klit jab, he simply won`t get close enought to Klitschko to utilise his strengths.

MisterLee:  Wow, Borges or F-lo write an "opinionated" article, and pple are up in arms about "biased" boxing articles. Since when are they objective or since when do experts and judges all agree on a single commonality? However, when they write a great memoir (which usually aren't "objective") or history piece they're finally a "genius, I never saw the talent coming!" Why can't ya respectfully disagree without coming off as a real _____ (you can fill in the blank!), or do geniuses not like respect, especially for someon of borges' experience, stature, and boxing knowledge?
Monday Jul 6, 2009 04:05:35 PM
boxing genius :  mister lee get a life i dont care if a writer does a biased peice but at least get the facts straight im a newcomer on this site and i appreciate any site that shows love to boxing but mr borges clearly said he cant see a scenerio where walker would drop vitali or wladamir but every hardcore fan or at least i think knows that walker floored vitali in 2004 at the time articles were being written about walker being the next american champ and how he floored vitali rumors were going at one point regarding walker as one of the hardest punchers in the division and unlike arreola vitali elected not to continue the sparring session was immediately stopped after vitali went down and no bad intentions toward mr borges but when you commit such a error in your segment one loses trust and cannot consider you a reliable writer !!!!
Monday Jul 6, 2009 07:40:24 PM
MisterLee:  *hands you an asthma inhaler* good luck with that! enjoy continuing to "swim without getting wet", "throwing insults without disrespecting", "hating while showing love." Have a nice day! holla!
Monday Jul 6, 2009 08:52:16 PM
Ringside:  boxing genius, you bring up a good point. I didn't think of that before. I'll use that to defend Arreola next time people bash him.

Suits, Stop Squabbling, And Posturing, AND MAKE FIGHTS!
"Floyd may very well be the most talented boxer but that he does not understand that what the fans, who ultimately pay the bills, watch fights for is entertainment. At the moment, he not only ignores that reality but frankly doesn't seem to care. Neither about our wishes and/or our passion for to see great fights. Thus, there is little Go ... and even less Show. I am vaguely interested in the Business of Boxing. Frankly, it is a mess on a good day and worse on it's worst. I prefer reading the Business pages where brilliant men and women develop skills and strategies to create incredible value and wealth (for themselves and others) in ways far more effectively and meaningfully than those who Rule ...some might say Ruin...this beautiful Sport." --FE'ROZ, speaking for a majority of fight fans
