Arum Comments On Arguello's Death

STATEMENT FROM BOB ARUM

ON THE PASSING OF ALEXIS ARGUELLO

LAS VEGAS, NEV. (July 1, 2009) – BOB ARUM, CEO of Top Rank, issued the following statement after hearing the news on the passing of three-division world champion and 1992 International Boxing Hall of Fame member ALEXIS ARGUELLO:

"We at Top Rank are very saddened to learn about the death of Alexis Arguello.  Alexis was one of the world's greatest fighters and champions. More importantly, he was a real man, a true gentleman and a loyal friend. He will be greatly missed."

From the International Boxing Hall of Fame: “A native of Managua, Nicaragua, Arguello held the featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight titles. Known as “The Explosive Thin Man,” Arguello was a brilliant offensive fighter and a master tactician. He compiled an 82-8 (65KOs) record that includes wins over Jose Legra, Art Hafey, Alfredo Escalera, Rafael Limon, Ruben Castillo, Cornelius Boza-Edwards, Jim Watt, Ruben Olivares, Ray Mancini and Bobby Chacon. In 1982 and 1983, he engaged in two pitched battles for fellow Hall of Famer Aaron Pryor’s junior welterweight championship, with Pryor registering kayo wins in the 14th and 10th round respectively.  He retired in 1986, but returned to the ring for two fights in 1994 and 1995 before hanging up the gloves. In 2008, Arguello was elected mayor of Managua.”

#1 Pacfan "KO's Cotto in 7":  R.I.P. Alexis Arguello, your spirit may no longer be with us but your name will always be here. Like many of the late legends of the sport, Arguello will never be forgotten. One of the greatest if not the best fighter to come out out Nicaragua and relates the story of a man who struggled but found boxing as a way out. He was not just a great champion in this sport but he was also committed to his country's freedom. He served in the military to better the lives of his people. He will always be remembered as a true champion with that warrior like mentality and the amount of respect he showed for his country.

Jose:  Arguello was a class act. He battered Mancini then was very complimentary of him and his father. He reportedly shot himself. A sad end to a great champion.

the Roast:  Alexis Arguello, the Explosive Thin Man dead at age 57. I feel like I have lost a relative. The man was class and dignity personified in the ring. I remember Alexis mostly from all those Saturday afternoon fights on CBS in the 80's.Ray Mancini of course. Others like Andy Ganigan, Bubba Buceme and Kevin Rooney. Always humble in victory, no excuses in defeat. The unforgettable fight with Aaron Pryor at the Orange Bowl. The man lived an incredible life, in and out of the ring. Rest in Peace, warrior, Champion. You will never be forgotten.

Anonymous user:  Who would have ever dreamed Aaron Pryor, with all his drug issues, would outlive Alexis Arguello? For boxing fans, this must be how it felt to the rest of the world when Michael Jackson died.

AFN:  Arguello will be remembered forever in boxing circles, and will grace the csreens of ESPN Classic for years and years. Respect my friend. Toonoy

brownsugar:  So humble he almost made Pacman look like a braggert by comparison,... rumors say he died of a gunshot wound to the chest,.. the police aren't ruling out murder,.. but some think it's suicide... although people rarely commit suicide by shooting themselves in the chest area,..Bob Arum said the former 3 time champ was the most intelligent boxer he's ever seen, Aaron Pryor said he couldn't believe what he was hearing and ,... "I never went into the fight knowing I could beat Alexis, I just went into the fight to beat Alexis." ... Arguello was the Mayor of Managua and had just returned from a baseball related event in Puerto Rico,... he will be missed.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
