Calling All Klitschkos! Calling All Klitschkos!
By David A. Avila
SHERMAN OAKS, CA.-Ironically, a press conference for Riverside’s Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola was held 88 miles away from Riverside in the wonderful town of Sherman Oaks in the San Fernando Valley.
This writer too had to drive the 88 miles one-way to cover the press conference for Riverside’s Arreola. The ironic part is the Nightmare usually trains about 10 minutes from my house. I could literally walk to his gym if necessary. Well, maybe not now because the temperatures are cracking the 100-degree mark and will do so until October.
Inside Sisley’s Restaurant, a great Italian eatery, Dan Goossen, the president of Goossen-Tutor Promotions hosted the boxing press on Tuesday to talk about Arreola’s next step in the wonderful world of pro heavyweight boxing.
To quote a favorite line from the Russian character in the movie You Can’t Take It With You: “It stinks.”
Most of the talk centered on the Klitschko brothers, the scourge of the Eastern bloc who have captured all of the world title belts that count. Arreola wants one of them now.
“Why is Vitali fighting David Gay?” said Arreola poking fun at Britain’s David Haye. “He doesn’t deserve to fight the champion. He hasn’t done nothing as a heavyweight.”
Arreola and Goossen both pointed to Haye’s victory over Monte Barrett as a poor indicator of the former cruiserweight champion’s ability. Both are also upset that the British fighter may receive two cracks at the Klitschkos after pulling out of the first scheduled bout against Wladimir.
The Mexican-American heavyweight promises that more money could be made fighting him at Dodger stadium in front of 60,000 people, many of them rabid Mexican fans.
“I’m a Mexican type of fighter,” says Arreola. “I can fill up an arena.”
If either Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko were to accept a title fight with Arreola it would surely fill up the Staples Center. Dodger Stadium might cover at least 30,000 people depending on the cost of the tickets.
No one is truly blaming the Klitschkos for fighting Haye who has been stopped once and though endowed with hand speed and a semblance of power, has a greater gift of having great British boxing fans behind him.
That all equals a good payday for either Klitschko at minimal risk.
“Outside of Europe who has heard of this guy?” asks Goossen.
He has a good point.
Only hardcore boxing fans know Haye. But in the Southwest and some parts of the east coast, Arreola has built a growing fan base with the help of HBO.
Haye is really an easy mark for either Klitschko.
Though Arreola is currently ranked number one by the WBC, it doesn’t mean Vitali Klitschko must fight him next. His mandatory isn’t due until March 2010.
The more Arreola spoke the more ambitious his goals. If he can’t fight either Klitschko he stated that he wants to rid the heavyweight division of the “old heavyweights.” Among those he claimed he would fight are former world champions John Ruiz and James “Lights Out” Toney.
In my estimation both fighters are capable of upsetting Arreola’s dreams of a Klitschko showdown. Toney loves aggressive fighters. The more aggressive an opponent the better he fights. And Ruiz just knows how to hold. He was somewhat successful against giant Nicolai Valuev. Nobody looks good against Ruiz and nobody that likes action would pay to see Ruiz. He’s the Strangler Lewis of boxing.
Arreola should fight the Klitschkos or someone less dangerous than Toney or Ruiz. Fight Michael Grant who has the perfect height to prepare for the Ukrainian brothers.
Henry Ramirez, who trains Arreola, says the boxing world has never seen what the Mexican heavyweight is capable of. Mostly because he tears into opponents and leaves them in a heap.
“He can do so much more,” Ramirez said.
Arreola promises if he gets a match against either Klitschko it will be a death match. And that fans won’t be disappointed.
“I will fight to my last breath,” Arreola said. “I will go out on my shield.”
It all comes down to either Klitschko.

“I will fight to my last breath,” Arreola said. “I will go out on my shield.” Uh, I've heard that Gerald McClellan might have said the same thing. Anyway, I still like ASHANTI "THE BOSS" JORDAN as a futre champ. The guy is great to watch.

Arreola is right, and he's among the first to point out that Haye has done NOTHING to deserve a title shot (other than me). NOTHING.

I have seen Arreola fight twice, and although I was impressed with his punching power , I was less than impressed with the shape he seemed to be in . It surprised me that this article states that Arreola is ranked number 1 by the WBC. The irony is that Arroela says, " Haye has done nothing as a heavyweight ", My first thought, is what has Arreola done?
I like Arreola , and I would be ecstatic if he eventually defeated both of the boring giants 'The Klitschko Brothers'. I think it would be great for boxing.
However, at this point, I think Arreola needs more seasoning. I believe he has a lot of natural talent, and can punch, and has made it this far on those two basics.Right now, I think he would have a puncher`s chance against the Klitschkos, but at this moment that would be all.
It always worries me to see a professional prize fighter appear for any match looking fat and out of shape. It says a lot about the fighter`s discipline (or lack thereof).
Anyone who fights the Klitschkos these days will have to be ready to fight a battle of attrition in order to overcome the Klitschkos robotic safety first movement and thunderous jabs. It will take an opponent in top physical shape to do that. Oh sure, Arreola could catch a Klitschko early with a one punch knockout, but that is unlikely. What is most likely, is that Arreola will have to take a few to land one, and ultimately wear ( which ever Klitschoko) down to the point where he (Arreola) can land his own bombs at will. That means being in supreme shape.
My point is, I don`t think Arreola is ready physically or mentally for either Klitschko at this time. I also agree with David Avila, that James Toney and John Ruiz are not who Arreola should be fighting in the interim, while preparing for a Klitschko!
I hope that about a year from now, after Arreola and his management team addresses the points I have made, that he gets his shot at the Klitschkos. Then I believe he will win.

Is it just me, or is it that every time one turns the tv on or pulls up the news, someone else is dead. The new life expectancy must be about 45-55. ARREOLA would have a better chance against Wladimir than Vitali, but my hunch is he'd lose to either.

Wow! Never will the legit "Nightmare" need to "fight to (his) last breath, (or) go out on (his) shield." But I dig the hype. He will knock out any of nowadays heavyweight champion in five rounds or less. That's RIGHT! He will be straight up whoop arse of these china chins and alphabet-soup tramps -- I mean champs! Somebody ought to get on the victory train for the Cali Crusher. I know it is just not me noticing on his forehead the words: "kickazz champion." YUP! It is invisible, lmfao! One of the title belt holders should get into the ring with him, so it can become visible. We are in a new century, so we will have a new kind of champion. All these 20th Century birddogs need to fade to black. We are in the eighth year of the 21th Century and it is CHRIS ARREOLA TIME! Y'all musta fo'got! Holla!

No shot at any of the big boys, conditioning coach or not. He doesn't bring anything to the table that all the other fallen guys haven't. Yes he is aggressive but everyone says they know how to fight the brothers but nobody can do it. And with the discipline of a 5 yr old he has no shot.
Ashanti Jordon is boring, he can join the Fat Six Jason Estrada or Boring Eddie Chambers as far as I am concerned and let them knock off each other to save us from hearing there garbage on why they should fight the next champ. Arreola -Vs- The King Pin now and let the winner get the media's attention. They will both fall at the top but lets get it over with.

Wow! My clone is wilding again, but he's right. Arreola will be the new man in the fatty heavys and giant china chins. I'm going on record to say that he will knock out Wlad, Vitali, and Valuev(less). The Latin "Nightmare" will reign supreme, unless I find a heavyweight Pinoy pugilist. Cristobal Arreola will always be hated for a discovery, just as Cristobal Columbo was. Suckas are showing hatred for the Cali-Mexican Crusher because of what destiny is going to serve him -- a heavyweight title belt. CA will discover how easily he will kayo the first heavyweight belt titleholder who has the cojones to give him a shot. Valuev and Doc Vitali "pee pee using" K should forget about ducking into one another by ducking CA. This Cali-Mexican Nightmare is fo' real! Holla!

Arreola has a point. He would be a big sell and at least he's fought his whole career at heavyweight. The "Nightmare" hasn't been beating down the elite yet, but he's more than capable of it and besides, the prospect of an American being heavyweight champion of the world again sounds awesome. He's right by the way, what's David Haye done at heavyweight, knock out Monte Barret? Please! David Gay better get in the back of the line! It's the " Nightmare's" time to shine! I'm looking straight at Wladmer and smell fear, let's get this party started! Quick note also, the "legit" heavyweight champion of the world being hispanic would be an interesting change of pace and no, John Ruiz nut huggin the WBA didn't make him the first legit hispanic heavyweight champ. Everyone knows the Ring Magazine is the true world title and if Arreola shows up in top shape against a Klistchko, well... it's going to be a nightmare for someone in that ring!

Chris Arreola has about a punchers chance at beating the Klitschkos. I give him credit for trying to hype up the division. He better be spot on with this confidence of his because if it's all talk it will be him who will have NIGHTMARES of the Klitschkos.

Arreola should be focusing on Valuev instead of Klitschko IMO. He could run through him, setting a stage for a mega unification event with Wladimir or Vitali. I think either brother destroys Arreola in 5, but he would make more money if he had an ABC title hang in front of the Klit's face.

I give Arreola a decent chance to win against Wladimir, but not against Vitali. If he can turn the fight into a brawl and lands a big shot I'm sure Wladimir will go, it just depends on who lands the big shot first cuz Arreola's chin ain't exactly solid either. Vitali on the other hand has a solid battle tested chin. He absorbed everthing Lewis and Sanders threw at him and never went down. Arreola should try to get a fight with Wladimir first and if successful go after big bro. RIP Alexis Arguello.

Last time I saw Arreola fighting it looked more like a wrestling match between two hairy-fatty-bears hugging all night long and wishing for a one punch knockout to end the agony of NOT BEING IN SHAPE for a full fight. And he wants to take on Wladimir Klitschko??? Wow... who will really bet on him???? Is the american media that desperate to find an all American Heavyweight?? I believe so.

I'm with Anony. Frankly, though anything can happen with one punch, I wouldn't even want to see Arreola beat the Klitschko's . It would send the wrong signal and be terrible for boxing. If he wins, every butterball with a punch ...and no apparent effort put into training and sacrificing to even look the part....will try to become a Heavyweight. As much as the K Bros bore me, at least they come to fight in shape and respect the sport.

nobody knows how to get inside better than Chris Areola,.. he defies logic,... it amazes me the way his 250lb plus body springs into action with the lithe agility of a leopard,.. don't know how he does it,.. absorbs powerpunches and comes back with a vengence,.. Big Chris can hold his own with anyone out there,.. Apparently the addition of the fitness coach is having some effect,. instead of his usual humble approach,..Chis is ready to kick down the door,.. Rumors are that Chris will fight Brewster in September...

Chris is just shaped the way Chris is shaped, ala Toney. James seems to have (eventually) lost a bit with age, I'd have it a pick em fight. Personally i would like to see Chris up the banter against David Haye (remember Ed Mike has rules guys), and push for a showdown with him, on his way to a clash with either Wlad or Vitali. At the moment, none of them have earned a shot, they are just clutching at straws. Povetkin and Valuev should be the Klits next opponents, to clear up the Russian scene. Toonoy

I don't think at this stage of Toney's career, he can hold off Arreola. Tony barly beat Danny Batchelder and had a gift decision over Quendo; he's on fumes. Huggybear might be tough, because he has a knack for throwing off people's timing. Plus Ruiz is in shape. Chris is dangerous for Wlad, because unlike everyone else, he can get inside. Arreola also throws combinations and is a finisher. If he can freeze Wlad, he could finish him. Then again, odds are Wlad will get to him fiorst, but I'd love to see the fight. Trouble is the Klitchkko's know better, so he'll fight Vitali first

Hopefully Arreola will get his chance. The best chance for anyone to beat the Klit bros would be to get inside and rough them up. From the outside they just pick a man apart. We've seen this many times over now. Chris should get in the best shape of his life and go for it. Imagine how much money he could make as the first Mexican-American to win a heavyweight belt. He deserves his chance more than Haye. One fight at heavy with Monte Barett?

Didn't we just get a warning about calling a certain welterweight gay because his name rhymes with it? Now Chris Arreola comes out and does the same thing. You know that's funny. Anyway I think it depends upon what kind of shape Arreola can get his fat butt into. If he comes in too heavy he'll get taken into deep waters and squander his chance of being heavyweight champion. The Klitchsko's are no joke.

Ruiz has been challenging Areola for months,.. saying that he should beat the Original Latino Heavyweight champ,.. Ruiz is willing to put his mandatory WBA against Areola's mandatory WBC,... might not be a fight that a lot of people want to see,.. but he'd be retiring Ruiz and gaining near Universal #1 status if he took the fight,... I think Areola would take him out in 5

It amazes me that people who actually follow boxing could think Arreola has a chance with either Klitschko. And it's not the out of shape thing I'm talking about. Yeah, arreola could come in a little leaner. But some guys just don't cut up. There have been fighters who train their asses off but still look flabby. I think Arreola is one of those guys. And he's a good fighter. He can punch and he can take it. He's got skills. I also think he's right about the Mexican crowd getting behind him in huge numbers in LA or Vegas. But as far as him beating Wlad or Vitali, no chance. Not even the so-called puncher's chance. One of these days the haters`are gonna wake up and realize the KO brothers are the real deal. Both brothers are all time great heavies. Period. No one notices in America because we're too used to our guys dominating. I had doubts about the Klitschkos at first too. But all that's changed. Not only does Wlad have one of the best jabs ever, the dude has become a great defensive fighter as well. I've watched his last 9 fights, and he doesn't get hit. People keep saying he's boring, but I don't see hat either. I've been betting on him. Vitali too. And I gotta say it's been exciting and fun to watch. Why? Because my cash is safe. Their opponents talk a ton of smack. Sam Peter even had the balls to take Vitali's belt off him at a press conference and leave the room with it. Talk about disrespect. Then in the ring: BEAT DOWN. Complete and utter beatdown. He couldn't get inside, and any time he tried he got hit. Then there was Wlad against Chagaev, and it wasn't close. Now people say Chagaev sucks. He doesn't. Good fighter. Up until that point he was undefdeated. He actually beat Cuban great Felix Savon in the amatuers. And he's the only guy who ever beat Valuev. and he was giving up a foot in height. Now he gets in there with Wlad, and he gets crushed. That's what happens against the Klitschko brothers. David Haye talked more smack than any fighter in history - Ali included. Then what does he do? He pulls out of the fight. Yeah, yeah, I heard about the bad back. But I think his brain talked his back into getting tweaked. The closer the fight got, the more nervous he looked. And he knew what was gonna happen to him. Nuff said! Arreola is`a good fighter, but not in the K bros. league. Not close. He'll get smoked. Holla!

One more thing about Arreola - and I like the guy. I don't wanna dis him. But the fight they should make for him is with Valuev. That's the money fight. And unless there's a major contractual snag, that's the fight I think his people are gonna make. Valuev actually seems to want a fight with Vitali Klitschko. But Don King won't let it happen. Cause once it does, that's the end of Valuev. And the only one who doesn't realize that is Valuev himself. But Valuev-Arreola is competetive. And given the styles it could be a war. Even a rematch if it's close. That would be the pay day Don King has been waiting for with Valuev. It's a fight he can sell. Valuev has the mystique. He could be the Ivan Drago Americans would root against. Arreola would be David against Goliath. And Valuev's got a belt. So it's legit. Plus, Arreola would be the home town dude in LA. They'd sell a lot of tickets for that one. And if arreola won, he'd have a belt. They could really milk that with the public. By the time he actually got in the ring with a Klitschko, it could be hyped into a PPV match. Arreola would get crushed. But so what. The dog would have his day.

See.. that's a good fight right there. ARREOLA vs. RUIZ. Same level guys and Ruíz is right, he is the original Latino Heavyweight Champion. But don't be surprise if Ruiz beats him by decision. Arreola will not like to go the distance. He becomes slow and looks tiring as the fight progresses. Ruíz has better stamina in my opinion and knows how to block punches well. He is kind of boring but has kind of Wladimir's style so it could be a good preparatory fight if he (Arreola) became winner.
