Paul Williams: A Lot Like Thomas Hearns But Definitely Different
By Frank Lotierzo
Why isn't there more buzz surrounding former welterweight champion Paul Williams? Williams very well may be a once in a generation talent. Couple that with his willingness to fight the best of the best opposition available, he should be a future star. If what he says is true, that being he can still make the welterweight limit of 147 pounds, the possible fights out there for him between welterweight and middleweight are almost mind boggling.
The 27 year-old Williams is listed at 6'1" and possesses an 82-inch reach, which is longer than that of former all-time greats Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks and Thomas Hearns. Hearns is the fighter Williams has most often been compared to. The obvious reason for that is basically because of their freakish size and physical stature, and likeHearns he hasn't struggled trying to get down to the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. The boxing world witnessed Hearns win titles from welterweight through cruiserweight solidifying his greatness. On the other hand Williams is still in the infancy of a journey to greatness equaling that of the level of which Hearns reached.
The comparisons drawn between Williams and Hearns are legitimate. That said, their style and approach to fighting aren't similar. Williams is a southpaw and may actually be more versatile than Hearns was. Most think of Hearns as having been a terrific puncher who could really box. Which isn't wrong, but it's different than being the boxer-puncher that Williams is.Hearns approached every fight with his mindset and intent being to take off his opponents' head. Hearns was a certified life-taker as a puncher and carried his punch up to light heavyweight. It's a known fact that Hearns sought the early knockout every time he climbed into the ring, something he was capable of delivering with his right cross or his left hook.
However, once Hearns sensed he wasn't going to get the sensational knockout, he got up on his toes and boxed. Hearns' left jab was terrific at setting up his missile like right hand, but when he chose to box he fired it in multiples and looked to occupy his opponent and to score. Rarely did Tommy look to sit down on his punches once he made the transition from life-taker to "boxer."Hearns the boxer fought moving back and relied on volume more than power as the fight progressed. When boxing, Hearns seldom used his wicked left-hook to the body nor did he throw many uppercuts other than in an attempt to keep his opponent honest, limitations that led to him not being a very effective in-fighter. Thomas Hearns was a great puncher who could use the ring and box from the outside if he was fighting an overwhelmingly strong opponent that he couldn't stop or drop. His punch variation was basically limited to straight punches from the outside. What saved him and kept him from being exposed if forced to fight on the inside was, it was tough getting inside against him.
Paul Williams is nowhere near the puncher that Thomas Hearns was and that may ultimately be the reason he doesn't run through the divisions above welterweight like Hearns did. However, he is a more versatile fighter than Hearns was and makes up for his lack of power by averaging 100 punches per-round, which is astonishing for a fighter who isn't much of a jabber or slapper. Williams is a boxer-puncher and is more likely to score stoppage wins later in the fight than we sawHearns do. Williams fights pretty much the same every time out. He looks to use his reach to set up his power from bell-to-bell during every round.
The difference between Williams and Hearns is Williams is a much better and more dangerous fighter on the inside. Williams throws beautiful hooks and uppercuts while moving forward or backward. His punch variation is more diverse and sophisticated thanHearns ' was. He's also great at disguising his uppercut and hook. Sometimes when his motion appears to begin as a hook it becomes an uppercut and viceversa. In his last fight against the defensive minded Winky Wright, Williams fooled him continuously by feinting the hook and coming up between his tight guard with the uppercut, then feinting the uppercut and coming around the side and landing with a left-hook below Wright's right elbow. This was something that no fighter has ever had success doing versus Wright without getting picked apart in the process.
Hearns had faster hands than Williams, but Williams has exhibited better punch placement. They're both very accurate with the difference being Williams can get through and score with less of an opening. Instead of blasting through what isn't there a laHearns, Williams finesses his way through and scores where there didn't appear to be even a slight leak.
It's been discussed and some have referred to Williams as being Hearns with a better chin; this is a thought I'm not ready to endorse yet, for one simple and obvious reason. I haven't seen Williams in with and touched by a fighter who was as heavy-handed as Iran Barkley or Juan Roldan, nor has he faced a fighter with the accuracy and power of Sugar Ray Leonard, or the combination of strength and toughness of MarvinHagler.
However, there are plenty of opportunities awaiting Paul Williams to enable him to make his case as being the next Thomas Hearns, something Vernon Forrest never quite achieved. With strong middleweights like Kelly Pavlik and Arthur Abraham at the top of the division, Williams should get his chance to prove if he can approach the success Thomas Hearns realized making the jump from welterweight to middleweight.
Paul Williams and Thomas Hearns share the physical trait of being extraordinarily tall welterweights, but other than their great natural talent, arm reach and willingness to fight anyone, there's nothing to really connect them.
Actually, Williams isn't much like anyone else I can think of and Hearns wasn't either.

I definitely believe when all is said and done the "Punisher" will have a hall of fame career. I know that styles make fights but the way he dominated a game Winky has to be foresight in things to come, and he's only 28. While we can speculate on future matchups for Paul, I am curious on how he takes a punch from a solid middleweight, say a Pavlik or Abraham, and I would love to see how he would react to their type of pressure. HIs only other test was from ole cinder block hands Marga-cheato, and he has vastly improved. In my opinion if he can turn those back-hands of his into jabs than the sky's the limit.

F-lo writa'! You keeping it fresh! Williams deserves some love! I think the reason he is not a star is b/c he ain't fighting with any other fighters that are stars (winky is coming from a lay off and he does not carry a huge fan base). If he can beat a cotto or mosley and in spectacular fashion, then he'll be an instant superstar. However, no fighter wants to give him that opportunity nor risk receiving a heavy loss. Clottey wants to fight him, but hey, they're each neither gonna benefit much as far as starpower from that fight but it'll be a really boxing fan's fight. Just like pavlik abraham. Thanks for the writing! :) TSS Rules! :) :)

Hearns is the better fighter. Williams is not yet proven. Hearns had strong inside punches. Williams punches a lot because he has not fought the competition Hearns did.

Nice piece super fightwriter Frank-Lo! Long Paul Sally is okay. But sooner -and not later- he will pay. He'll be spooked by the Ghost KP and the King. They are much too good. They will crack his fragile ribs and grill. Their 160 pound bodies have some crack, pop, bang chili bang, and straight-up kill! A lot of the whack jobs and quack jobs that live on Long Paul Sally's bandwagon also have a bus pass on Juan Manuel Marquez broken down rig. LPS is NO Tommy Hearns . No disrespect, as I'm always humble and let my actions speak and not my words, but the truth is something you can't 'scap fro'. And in the words of super fight-reader Donputo 69, "Nuff said. Holla back, ladies!" Holla!

I think what's affecting Paul is the Manny Effect. Although Manny's not the RainMaker that DLH was, he is when compared to everyone else at Welter (Except for Cotto). None of the other guys at Welter are ticket sellers ( Mayweather, Moseley, Williams, etc.), but they are excellent B-Sides. So instead of fighting each other in front of empty seats and dismal PPV buys, they wait for Manny ( or Cotto) to pick them. But now that Manny and Miguel are fighting each other, these guys are stuck.

I like PW as a fighter but he is very beatable! He lost to Quintana who is no Sugar ray leonard and the fight wasn't close. Before we compare current fighters to All Time Great fighters, we need to wait until their careers are over or at least close to being over. P.S. having a wide array of punches doesn't make a fighter good or great! Ali thew maybe four or five different punches and Aaron Pryoe thew about a dozen different punches but they are both All Time Greats.

Williams is nowhere near Hearns. I'll quote the movie "Tropic Thunder" and apply it here: Paul Williams went "full (mentally challenged (pc))" against Quintana, something Hearns would NEVER have done. You think that Williams would have Duran out face-first in the 2nd round? Or any round for that matter? Hearns' early loss to Leonard was a classic, and SRL, of course, a future Canastota inductee. Williams is good in today's shallow waters, but the comparison doesn't work. Hearns became vulnerable when he kept going up in weight, but he still was highly competitive. He lost his ability to take a shot from 160+. He was on rubbery legs during the ring entrance near the end. But Williams hasn't proven anything yet.

Well, Fightwriter F-Lo, I not feeling you on Long Paul Sally. Gosh! This cat is far from being an accurate puncher. Man! You don't fire a 100-plus punches a round and mix 80, 81. The air-punching punisher is excellent in hitting and punishing air, but not noggins and torsos. Wow! This dude is nowhere near Hearns who hit noggins and torsos at a low 35 percent to a high 65 percent. Whenever Maul yo arse Paul run into a counterpunch, he will be exposed. Nobody can convince me that he is as good as the hype surrounding him. I don't believe for a sec that he could last with Pera Pac, Money May, Margarito in a second go around, Mosley, Clottey or Cotto. The Ghost Pavlik would stop him as my clone spits. Even lite-punching Cory Spinks would beat this guy. I'm not hating Long Paul Sally. After all, the guy is a lefty. And it's lefty time. Dude just hasn't made me a believer or seer in his poison. I see only his 1,001 flaws, thur far. Holla!

I knew someone would bring up the Quintanna fight. Hey, he avenged it with a first round KO. Fighters also improve. Sonny Liston lost to Marty Marshall. Williams is a different fighter now, he's improved his jab and throws a straight left, instead of slapping it. The guy blew Quintana away and shut out Wright. Trust me, I don't care if Wright is shot or not (that's debatable) but any version of Wrigth would have schooled the Willaims who lost to Quintana. It will be interesting if he can hit hard enough to keep Abraham or Pavlik off him, and if his body can hold up against middleweights

Paul Williams is a beast! Who ever he fights he has a good chance of beating. The last fighter to do what he does is Henry Armstrong and that been over 50 years ago. Pac is moving up wining but Williams is willing to go up and down from 147 to 168 against anyone thats old school stuff. I hope his next fight is against a big name cause he deserves it.

Hey, Shep! Just because a guy loses to a B-level fighter doesn't mean he couldn't bean an A-level fighter. Shane Mosley lost to Vernon Forest twice, yet Shane will go down in history as the better fighter. Jack Dempsey lost twice to nobody Willie Meehan before achieving greatness. You can't pigeon hole a fighter based on one fight. Boxers learn things, change their approaches and sometimes come back entirely different and better than before.

I wouldn't start comparing Williams to Hearns just yet.Hearns is an all time great.Williams says he has no trouble making welterweight, but what happened in his first fight with Quintana?Looked like shades of Oscar vs Manny to me.He did avenge that fight though.
He did beat Wright, but he is way past his prime.

unlike hearns williams has a concrettttttttte chin, willilams has never been down or close to it and been hit by muderous punchers like margarito and quintana with everything including the kitchen sink, he does not punch as hard as hearns as hearns had that deadddddddly right hand but williams can take his man out more often than not but the chin and STAMINA seperate these 2, paul can fight all night throwing 100 a round were hearns had serious stamina issues as well, he isnt heans status yet but he is approching

Great post! Paul Williams has the potential to become one of the best fighters of this generation, but to do so he needs quality opponents to step up and face him. In my opinion, fighters are dodging him becasue of his punch output. It's hard to beat a guy that will throw over 1,200 punches a fight. His activity, coupled with his freakish skill set make him scary for the top names. They don't want to lose unanimous decisions!

Tommy Hearns was an all-time great. His numerous first-time accomplishments by a boxer are incredible; granted there are more belts and bean counters now than in the golden era of boxing. Regardless, the Hitman had one of the most vicious left hooks to the body ever seen, not to mention his right cross. How about this for a fantasy match up: Hearns vs. Sugar Ray Robinson. The look on the face of both of these men in the heat of battle evinced that of a real killer. Their eyes smoked with destruction. Paul Williams has a lot of potential. He has already tasted real success. But I believe he will do a lot more in the next five years. His people just need to get him good fights. The money will follow. Acclaimed champions out there can't keep hiding from him. But I'm not sure whether he can develop enough power for big wins in the middleweight division. I could be wrong. Look at vintage Hearns in that weight class. The man started lifting weights and turned a wiry frame into that of a stallion. I bet the guy could push some unbelievable weight in the gym. Williams should let his body naturally fill up and lift weights in 3 - 4 years before taking on any real tests in the middleweight division. For now, I would love to see Williams vs. Mosely, Cotto, or Pacman. I think he could beat all of those guys. Hell, I would even love to see him destroy that imposter, Kermit Cintron.

Top fighers step up and fought Hearns, (Duran, Sugar Ray, Hagler) ect.the top guys have not with Williams he can't put a gun to there head and make them. How is he very beatable the guy he lost to he killed in the rematch he just had a off night. P.S having a wide array of punches can make you a all-time great also having a 82 inch reach throwing 100 punches per round and a soild chin. Stop bring up the first Quintana fight its pointless he beat him so easy the 2 time around that you can't believe he lost to him the first time around.

Paul Williams is all but hype to me. He is just a big tree waiting to be cut down. I want to point out that Williams will not be able to make the Welterweight limit any longer believe me on that. It will be his defeat certificate if he were to try. Too bad because I would have love to seen him with Cotto or Mosley which is still possible at 154. Mosley would put him to sleep If you ask me. I'm not yet convinced on Williams.

There is no reason to compare PW with any past fighter yet....when he can't get any present fighter to even call his name. Shame on them all. This is the man to beat. With weapons and natural advantages like no other. Let's see what happens when one of the so-called champions above 154 ask to fight him. They better be ready to work.....all night long.

I like Paul,.. but I have serious doubt he could compete effectively at 147 again,..not with someone who could take him deep,.. dispite what he and his managers say about his ability to cut weight,.. ... and he was nearly busted up by Verno Philips,.. althought he dominated,.. he did it with all the efficiency of a face fighting Jake La Motta,.. a pure boxer like Hearns,.. Hagler,.. or even a blown up Duran would leave him needing a plastic surgeon,.. But he is one of my favorites,.. and he's the only fighter who can hit you with a kidney punch while standing 2 feet away ,....standing right in front of you,... I feel he's still a work in progress,.. be he seems to be improving and filling out well,.. with careful managment,.. I'd pick him over Pavlik and Abrahms at 160 a year or 2 from now,.... if they stayed in the division long enough to make the fight,... 2-5 years from now we'll find out what he's really made of when he moves up to the talent heavy super middle divison,...

SHANE MOSLEY VS. PAUL WILLIAMS is the most exciting fight that could take place before the year's end. Both like to say "nobody want to fight me (crying)" SO WHY THE HECK THEY DON'T JOIN FORCES AND GIVE US A SHOW???... They are made for each other. Mosley is as fast as Quintana and like to come forward and Williams believe he can impose himself to any fighter so that makes AN EXPLOSIVE FIGHT. I'm even willing to pay PPV for that fight if it has a decent undercard. Let's say, Quintana vs. Sergio Martínez (two technical southpaws). That would be an awesome show and I'm sure it will sell well if they do the right marketing, something like "THE MOST FEARED FIGHTERS SHOWDOWN" . Include Deontay Wilder against another building constructor and you have a more marketable show. For those who followed the Olympics, I mean. Oh man, let me call Golden Boy, I'm going to sell them the idea before Shane reaches 40 years old and still waiting for Pacquiao. hehehehe.

Not Hip To The Hype
"Haye has said that without the hype, boxing is boring. This tells you something about him as a fighter and as a man. And maybe something about his low expectations of his own value as a fighter. Why isn't his skill good enough? Which audience is he trying to impress? When I watch fights, I watch the contest, the skill, the drama, the match-up. Screw the circus hype."---TSS reader Mortcola, giving thumbs down on David Haye and his pre-fight antics
