Mayweather vs. Marquez Re-Set, To Sept. 19
FLOYD MAYWEATHER VS. JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ
RESCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 19
BOTH FIGHTERS AGREE TO COMPETE IN WELTERWEIGHT CONTEST
ON BOXING’S BIGGEST WEEKEND—
MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY
LOS ANGELES (June 26, 2009) – Sports fans around the world can breathe again as it was announced today that the highly anticipated 12-round welterweight showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez has been officially rescheduled for September 19, after Mayweather, who suffered a rib injury while training for the originally scheduled July 18 date, received clearance from his doctor to participate on the new date.
Mayweather vs. Marquez: “Number One/Numero Uno,” which will still take place at MGM Grand in Las Vegas and be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View®, will now take place on what on what is historically considered boxing’s biggest weekend, and falling on the time-honored tradition of Mexican Independence Day.
“I am relieved to be cleared to fight as I was already looking forward to getting back in the ring,” said Mayweather. “Trust me, September 19 is a great weekend for boxing, and all of my fans, of which there are many Mexicans too, can certainly hold on to their hats and sombreros when I get back in to the ring and show them what they have been missing these past 18 months. I will destroy Marquez and reclaim my rightful place as boxing’s pound-for-pound king all in one night. Don’t miss it.”
Marquez, who has also agreed to fight on the new date, is excited about appearing yet again on the time-honored tradition of El Grito de Independence.
“I am happy that Mayweather has been cleared to fight and we can get down to business on September 19,” said Marquez. “This weekend is not just an important weekend for boxing, but even more so for all of the Mexican and Mexican-American people I will be fighting for who will have a great reason to celebrate my win over Mayweather, which will be for all of the people and for the entire country of Mexico that night. I am sure of victory and si se puede- yes we can and yes we will!”
Mayweather vs. Marquez: “Number One/Numero Uno,” is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions in association with Marquez Promotions and is sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and Southwest Airlines.

Everyone with half a brain saw this coming from a mile away. This fight (Mismatch) sold ONLY 2300 tix in a month the first time around. So Fraud being Fraud.. he fakes an injury. Now they move it to Mexican Independence Day ( As predicted last week) so as to give it more Juice. The funny part is Floyd's up to his ass in debt. He owes millions to the IRS, Al Haymon, and few others. Not to mention that as the Promoter, his cut of the purse isn't guaranteed, but Marquez's $4 million is. Sad but True..LMAO!

well we know that FLOYD MAYWEATHER OWES IRS $6 MILLION!!!!!!!!!!!!! and his gangsta friends ripped off Floyd Mayweather- Robbed of $7 Million in Jewelry at Las Vegas Home. so hes 13 million less then what he was a year ago. dont get it twisted floyd needs more money to live his gangsta lifestyle. buying bottles and making it rain at tryst nightclub in vegas gets expensive.

Hum! I cannot say that I care about this jive-turkey bout. Money May is going to make Marquez do the dodo bird. Marquez will crash into the canvas. He will go from canvas kissing to canvas crashing. What a clown! I believe that PacMan gave him slight brain damage. @deepwater, don't believe the hype. Yup! Maybe "gangsta friends ripped off Floyd Mayweather," but Money May has/had gangsta insurance. Maybe Money May gave da gangsta friends his jewelry to collect on a insurance policy. Hey, it will help with his IRS debts. Holla!

It coulda been an insurance scam but why risk that? if he got caught he would be mud mayweather. no more money mayweather and a bunch of federal charges. that means no more dancing with stars or amex commerials. my guess it was an inside job ,one of his security guys/friends let someone in the back door.with floyd getting some insurance money back.I know he cut his crew down after that. it went from 20 deep to 10 deep

THIS IS GOOD, REAL GOOD... I just wish JMM knocks him out or win by decision. But if Floyd wins.. and Cotto wins... then he will not have an excuse to duck Cotto. I mean, the whole issue of not fighting Cotto "was the money", right??? Floyd can't escape. Either Pacquiao or Cotto will shut his mouth eventually. That's great news!!!!

@ pacfan, I completely agree with you, Floyd isn't the biggest draw around. My point is that why should boxing fans care about that? The financial numbers a fighter can do should only matter to the boxing money men (PROMOTORS). The only things we should concern ourselves with are 1. Entertainment eg) good match ups and 2. Clarification as to who's best. I have no problem with people saying they don't like Floyd because of his safety first style but people shouldn't judge it on PPV numbers. Manny wasn't that big of a draw in the US until recently, that doesn't make him less of a fighter/talent and by the same token Oscar was (and probably still is) the biggest draw ever but he certainly isn't the greatest fighter ever. The fact of the matter is this, BOXERS/TECHNICIANS will never be as popular as FIGHTERS/BRAWLERS...

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!! Man, I LOVE when people hate on Floyd. It's in bad taste when people criticize Juan Manuel Marquez, but it's a plesure to read and see people insult Floyd Mayweather Jr (39-0). Floyd is the most hated, yet the most talented fighter in this era. I'll be MORE than happy to spend my money on my two favorites fighter in boxing, and I'll enjoy it to the FULLEST. While the Pacfans are gonna be sleeping on September 19, the True boxing fans are gonna enjoy the two best technically sounded fighters in boxing, not to mention the TRUE P4P bests, with no lunging forwards styles. As my prediction, for now I'll take Floyd Mayweather Jr to defeat Juan Manuel, and much more importantly, to defeat him CONVINCINGLY, something the today's so-called "P4P#1" could NEVER do, even having sending Marquez down 4 times, he could never get a UD, nor a KO VIctory. We all know Marquez outboxed him in the rematch. Anyways, Juan Manuel is just step one; Pacquiao, Mosley and the rest are gonna get it one by one. Floyd Mayweather Jr (39-0) is taking boxing back where it belongs today: IN HIS CRIP!!! Peace!

Your boy Cotto did good against Clottey, man. People here were attacking him, like Mister Lee, but Cotto did awesome, and with one eye; that cut changed everything, and there were some other things affecting him that night, but like the majority of times, he adjusted and did very well. He did great against Clottey. Anyways, Floyd's back and he's ready to go again HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I know you hate him, but there'll be no beef 'tween you and man, dude. Money May most definitely lost somethings outside of the ring....and I don't have to be his friend or a genius to list a few. To begin with, he lost money. Whether he lost it in Vegas or in the most conservative investments you can be sure he lost it. We all did. He left in a great economy and had returned in a recession. In that way, he's just like the rest of us. Secondly, he lost momentum. He left as the undisputed P4P king but, in his absence, he has been replaced.....by Manny. Worse yet, Manny is everything Floyd isn't. He's fierce, aggressive and offensive.... a fight fan's dream. And so that brings me to the last of lost valuables: LEVERAGE. He lost it. That's a fact. Manny and Arum have him by his oft-questioned balls. Now , as a fan of the game and no hater, I hope he hasn't lost the very things he needs to regain those he lost. Speed and Skills. If they're gone.....and I doubt it....this discussion is mute. If he hasn't and he returns triumphant then he can get it all back. And lastly, if he finds the balls to take on true Welters, Mosely and Cotto and/or Williams....then he can get what he wants most.....respect and legacy.

If floyd had picked a welterweight fighter, i would not have opened my mouth. However, i agree with you guys he's an expert technician. If the next fighter that he fights after marquez is a welterweight, and even a top ten welterweight I will shut my mouth for a little while (even if it's not cotto mosley). Salt lover! how you! I think of the recent fight not that i was "hating on cotto" but i was standing up for the man from Ghana, the heater, joshua clottey. I thought he fougth one helluva fight, he def. beat cotto up bad in rounds 7-10, and he showed the world he's not overrated, and plus that he can take anyone's sunday punch and nod his head as if he's got some reggae music in his head. Great post Fe'roz and MrLee, why is that if I'm not a Mayfan I'm considered a hater? Couldn't I just be called a criticizer instead? I've made it very clear that I'm a critic. Floyd is a great fighter but I just don't believe he stands a chance with guys like Mosley, Cotto, or Margarito. Expect this to be his last fight coming back because he don't want none of those guys. Heck, he's already ducking Pacquiao. Enjoy this moment because he will then call it quits once again and say he has nothing left to prove.

Ali, Always good hearing your voice. Much respect. Given that we are talking prize-fighting, money must always be part of the equation. Floyd's finances, like our own, can influence his choices and decisions. If, and I emphasize if, he were in some distress financially, it may in fact have a significant bearing on which matchs he tries or does make. Assuming of course, he has the leverage. Alternatively or should I say hypothetically, if he was set for life....he may choose never to fight again.
The fact that he has tells me he wants to get and keep his moniker: "Money". As a man, I hope Floyd's finances are solid. As a fan, I'm glad he's back. pc

well this isn't about who is eating what who is kisssing who or what style is better. Maywether is a great boxer with great technical qualities and Marquez is too, if marquez is able to cut the ring and lands godd punches on maywethers body he has a chance. Marquez is campable of doing this, and will do it like Castillo and Jesus Chavez did it.the only question is if he can take a pounch from floyd and how well can he take it.and about the best 4p4 it have to say is someone between poul williams and shane moosly

Marquez is amazingly underated. He beat pacman (TWICE) if everyone is honest about it....and as pacman is clearly more dangerous than mayweather, its a no brainer.
i'm surprised mayweather hasn't completely ducked this one yet, but then, theres still a few months to go now.
my prediction: barring some unfair judging (which is likely when mayweathers involved) marquez will win unaminously on points- the only exception is mayweather gaining a win through cheating or from marquez ko-ing his ass late on

Even if Mayweather beats Marquez convincingly, it dont mean nothing, Pacquio would kill him at LWelter or Welter Weight, Pacquiao looks good in these weights, Marquez dont look like a guy who could do anything to a Pacquiao if you judge him on his last fight where he got beat up for the first six rounds, If he done that fight with Pacquioa or Mayweather he would have got knocked out long before he knocked out Diaz.
Mayweather aint that great hes a duck-a-fight slower less agressive and entertaining version of Pernall Whittiker, he should be a man and stop looking for easy fights for money, he cant go down as top ten of the greatest of all time for the same reason Joe Calzaghe cant he dodged too many people, if he wants to go down top five G.O.A.T he will have to beat Pac and Mosley although he will probably wait until mosley hits 40 to be sure he can get that one

Harsh Reality:
|
Fistic when are you going to realize that to make big money in boxing you have to get the "casual" boxing fan and not the hardcore boxing fan. Hardcore fans are few and far between but casual fans are out there in the millions. Casual fans want to see brutal knock outs, bloody toe to toe action. NOT running around and blocking punches. Thats why fighters like Tyson and Pacquiao are such huge PPV draws. DLH was a ppv draw in big part to his appeal to women as half the PPV subscribers were women. The bottom line is that boxing is a business and boxers are businessmen who box to make money.

this fight cannot be judged as anything more than a warm up fight for mayweather. not taking anything away from marquez but in trouble or not mayweather is using this fight as a stepping stone to pound for pound either cotto or pacman it doesnt matter either way, in cottos defence i think if you duck a fighter for 5 years then you either have one hell of a good reason or your scared of the guy that will take your crown, on the pacmans side well quite simply i think he is one of the very few fighters that can realy upset mayweather, as we know hes fast, elusive, durable and knows when to pull the trigger thats why i think this would the perfect fight the fans and for boxing true pound 4 pound king vs new pound 4 pound king!

Wow, nice input guys . Well I dislike the fact that Mayweather and Marquez are going to fight during the Independence day of Mexico. Does Mayweather hate Mexican's? Going back to the fight between DeLaHoya &Mayweather, Maywether walked in wearing a charo sombrero, and red, green and white trunks, as if taunting DeLaHoya not only that, in my opinion Mayweather is a dirty fighter, he does have a few good fights; un-deniable . But going back to his fight with DeLaHoya, it seemed as if he bought the fight , as if he bought the judges . So now he's promoting this fight . Is he trying to be the next Ali ? Why does he smile when they are punching him in the face ? Sorry fellas, I just dislike him because he has so much pride, and people are making him seem a boxing God. I hope and pray Maquez wins, I'm not a big fan of Marquez, but I hope this is the straw that brakes the camels back. Correct me if you wish.
And Pacman, his a good fighter, I'd love to see Mayweather and Pacman fighting in the ring . May the best man win September 19 *

Mayweather will win, he is clearly the better fighter, he out skills jmm in every way. Im tired of hearing that Mayweather picks the easy fights, when every fight is easy when your the best, he has fought the top guys in every weight class he has went to, He Destroyed THE UNDEFEATED Hatton, Pacman man just finished off the remains. Floyd deserves His respect, boxing has too make him a bad guys because he's the best, It gives people a hope that he will loose, So they keep buying the ppv's the make excuses to try and take away from the fact the he is THE GREATEST FIGHTER WHO EVER LIVED. Not because of his strength, Speed, Size, Its because he Thinks about everyone of your moves before you can even make them, He knows his opponents better than they know themselves, He out thinks them, Forces them to make a mistake and them he attacks it until the make another mistake and he attacks that until he picks them apart part by part. JMM is a front round fighter a floyd knows it sit back and let him tired himself out counter him until he gets tired and them slowly take control , until he dominates the fight. FLOYD MAYWEATHER Wins

Rika: Ali is a Horrible example of boxing, Floyd is much more skilled, Ali's hands were down and got hit alot, Joe luis Brought out the sloppy style of Ali, Ali can barely talk now, because he had NO DEFENSE, Floyd mayweather prides himself on defense and It shows in his fights. Floyd is a new generation of Boxing, Its called Brains, & DEFENSE.

Juan Manuel Marquez is clearly not the same man he was in his prime and at the age of 37 he is clealry past his prime. He is no longer at a level to compete with top oppoition as he was 7-10 years ago, therefore I don't think he can beat Mayweather. Mayweather is a good fighter but just like Pacquiao, they both have poor resumes. Both have defeated good fighters, period. The top class fighters they both have defeated hs been when these opponents were pretty much done with their careers. The only fighter Mayweather defeated who was a good fighter in his prime was Corrales (RIP), the rest like Judah, Gatti, etc where way past their prime. Pacquaio on the other hand has only defeated one elite fighter who was still at a good stage in his career which was Barrera....aside from Barrera...Morales was clearly at the end of his career coming from a loss to some unknown fighter before facing Pacquiao (and still managed to give him a boxing lesson). Anyone who truly understands the art of boxing knows that Marquez defeated Pacquio in both fights even though he was knock down several times. Now, if you are new to the sport like many of you are and started following boxing just 5 years ago, then you will automatically think Pacquiao won just because he knock down Marquez. I've been watching Boxing since the 80's when Chavez defeated Mayweather(Floyd's uncle, for al of you new to the sport), and have watched TRUE battles which you cannot see today. Golden Boy offered a guaranteed $6 million to Pacquiao for a third fight with Marquez and guess what.....Arum said no....he said "I'm not saying that a third fight won't happen, but we just have to let it bake for a while".....translation, let's wait until Marquez skills decline with time and then we can face him and maybe this time we can defeat him. The point is Mrquez has always faced the best at their best and has come up on top, but at 37 years of age, I doubt he can defeat Mayweather.

How much much did the fight pay? How much was the purse? What percentage did the winner get and the loser get? what was the gross amount that HBO made for the fight. How much did the fight make----same questions for the fight with cotto and packman?

You Have To Take The Test To Be Called The Best
