| Pascal is a nifty mover, and he has quick hands and decent pop. Who should he fight next, matchmakers? |

Your Move ESPN! The Gauntlet Has Been Thrown By Versus
By Michael Woods
A big, sloppy TSS kiss goes out to Versus, for buying the Adrian Diacanou/Jean Pascal main event from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, and to the fighters for putting on a top tier scrap for fight fans. Pardon the saliva, but I was seriously amped as I took in some heavy-duty back and forth action, and pondered the meaning of Versus’ entry into the Friday Night fight realm.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the gauntlet has been thrown down, and it is up to ESPN how they want to respond, as Versus sent a message that they are a player in pugilism broadcasting with this show; we the fight fans can only benefit, as this club fighter of a network elevated themselves into the mix with the big boys on Friday night. Jean Pascal did the same, as he boxed expertly, scored a knockdown in the fifth, and wrested the WBC light heavyweight title from Diaconu by scores of 115-112, 116-112, and 116-111 (same score as TSS).
Diaconu (age 31; 173.9 pounds; 26-0, 15 KOs entering; from Montreal) figured he’d grind down the faster-fisted mover Pascal eventually. Pascal (ranked No. 5 by WBC; age 26; 174.9 pounds; 22-1, with 15 KOs entering; born in Haiti, lives in Quebec) had only a December 2008 loss to Carl Froch as a blemish on his resume.
Pascal worked in retreat to start off. He landed a hammering right to the body 2/3 of the way through that hurt me, on my couch. He tagged the champ with a clipping right soon after, and looked to be super confident. He moved smartly, his hands down when he was safely out of range. He slipped with aplomb, but one wondered if his legs could stay fresh for 12. The two engaged in grappling and rabbit punches on several occasions.
The movement by Pascal did diminish some by the fourth, but that wasn’t necessarily to his advantage. The challenger clubbed Diac with a right behind the head, but the ref didn’t flag it, because he’d dipped his head down prior to the punch’s launch. Pascal dropped Diac in the fifth, with a left hook counter. He was up, with clear eyes, quickly. Pascal went in for the kill, but then backed off sensing the champ had his senses back. Indeed he did; he caught Pascal with a right, and wobbled him. Fab round.
In the sixth, Pascal’s legs weren’t like they were in the first. Could he step up the jab, keep the champ off him? He was still slipping effectively but could he keep that up? Maybe it wouldn’t matter, he scored with two left hooks and a right to close out the round. In the seventh, Pascal’s legs were back, and he was again making Diac miss badly. Both let off the gas some in round eight. Pascal maybe stole the round in the last five seconds. In the ninth, Diac threw more. In ten, Pascal danced. Would the judges look down on his displays of confidence, deeming them hubris? Pascal seemed sloppier, but did do some decent body work. Tight round. In the 11th, a jab made Pascal blink twice. Both men didn’t fight clinches all that hard. A long right hit Pascal, but he got right back in the champ’s face. Diac slammed Pascal, and nearly had him down in the last 20 seconds. In the 12th, the crowd stood the entire time. Pascal was busier, and we’d go to the cards.
Troy Ross (age 33; born in Guyana, resides in Toronto; 22-1, with 15 KOs) opened up the broadcast; he won the latest season of Contender, and is looking to parlay that into a title shot. Ross met up with Michael Simms (age 34; 20-11, 11 KOs), well known to TSS readers from the “Brute” series. Ross was the more aggressive of the two lefties. He often backed Simms up, clanged him with hooks to the head and body, while the Sac fighter held his guard high, and didn’t often enough answer back. Ross’ right eye puffed a bit in the fourth, but the enswell handled it. An accidental butt in the sixth opened a slice on Ross’ left eye, but he didn’t panic. He did get a bit more cautious, though, and Simms did move forward more. But our “Brute” man didn’t press the issue like he really, really wanted it. In the tenth, Simms needed a break from a low blow. Then he ate mad shots and needed a standing eight, as he was leaning on the ropes. But the round ended before Ross could finish the task. The judges called it 98-91, 99-90, 99-90.
Ross is a solid ‘B’ guy, who could get a title shot, but would be an underdog to win a crown. Simms came what he comes to do: give rounds, throw some shots intended to hurt, just enough to be invited back, and absorb punishment.
Barry Tompkins called the action with Wallace Matthews.
SPEEDBAG I called Kelly Pavlik’s manager, Cameron Dunkin, during the main event, wondering if he could see Pavlik tangling with Diaconu. Yes, I know there is a heavy weight disparity, but maybe Diac could be persuaded to drop down to 167 or so to make it happen, for big money one day. Yes, Dunkin said, he could see that pairing working well. He also told TSS that Felix Sturm is probably in the lead to meet WBC 160 pound champion Pavlik, on October 3, on HBO. Or maybe, was in the lead. Sturm is slated to take on Khoren Gover on July 11, in defense of his WBC 160 pound title, and he is saying he wants to take off two months after that. Do the math. He wouldn’t then be in fight mode for an October date. This is purely personal speculation, but is Sturm sending a signal that he thinks he can’t handle Pavlik? Would you not think he’d be chomping at the bit to show US fans, maybe in Atlantic City, that his showing against Oscar De la Hoya in 2004 was no fluke? Am I wrong?

@ Editor Mike, Nice writing man. I was wondering alot of the same stuff from my couch. We the fight fans get more boxing if Versus becomes a player. Always a good thing. Very good fight. Great crowd. I was afraid Pascal was gonna get the old eh eh eh on the decision. This makes Froch look good too. Alot going on tonight trying to go back and forth to the ESPN2 card. As far as the Pavlik-Sturm, 2004 was five long years ago. Sturm doesnt want any part of Pavlik.

Versus is looking good (ref. Freddie Prinze). I missed the latest card on Vs, but tonite's ESPN2 provided good interest. But again, no female bout...

I'm a little surprised,.. I'd always figured Pascal to be a glorified arm-punching-roy-jones-clone ( the budget version),.. but he's getting the work in and making progress,.. even becoming a recognized name,.. this may be asking for too much,.... but maybe,.. just maybe he could inject some fresh blood into the tired 175lb mix by trying to force a fight with Dawson (or even McCloud),.. if Dawson beats Glen again (which he should, Glen ain't gettin no younger),.. the light heavy weights are desperate for some recognizable faces,.. and the addition of Pascal is definetly a good thing,.. I was riding high atop the Pavlik Bandwagon until Bhop headed us off at the pass and we crashed in the gulley of inexperience,..living only 75 miles from Pavliks hometown you know I had to support the local hometown boy,.. I'm not sure what his management is waiting for but they need to take him out of mothballs and either move up to 168,.. take a defense at 160,.. or even square off against Paul Williams,.. Pavlik needs to stay active and learn his craft,..or he'll find himself getting upset by some novice,.. stop waiting for cherry picked fights and be the champ that he said he would be,.. by taking on all comers.... before the bhop fight he was the next big thing in boxing,.. they were about to name a new brand of bubble bum and breakfast cereal after him,.. now it's harder to find out his intinerary that it is to get David Haye in the ring against another heavyweight,..

Froch pascale was a winner. I just saw that today. It was just one step below gatti ward, but it was huge and froch can really box better than pple think, he just has a tendency to slug, but that's b/c he is a warrior and has a huge heart. He never fades, and he even works and pumps the jab well. And we got the andre's being ordered by the WBC in an elimination bout to fight froch (tho i think it's too early to pit both undefeated prospects agst each other), we got allan green, miranda gatekeepin', abraham might step up, bute, froch, ward, dirrell, dawson at light heavy, bhop, and pascal, pavlik might move up someday, and we got adamek at the top in cruiserweight. This is going to be the hottest set of divisions in like 2-3 years, they'll outshine the welterweights! Especially after Mosley retires. Pc out! Tss rules! :)

Mister Lee,..Froch does indeed have a few tricks up his sleeve,..but his performance against Taylor showed that his boxing skills are lacking a bit,.. but his conditioning, amazing strength and fortitude took over when all else failed,.. I can't believe the 2 Andre's are being pitted against each other so soon,.where did you see that at??? but I can't be too upset as it would be an incredible contest,.. and my credit to both men if they actually do the fight,...but I have feeling management would oppose it all the way....and throwing Pavlik and Abrahms into the mix would really ratchet up the 168 drama....just keeps getting better...Pascal has some natural gifts,.. (I saw the replay of Pascal vs Diaconu),.. but the guy is wild,.. he needs to get back to fundamentals possibly even change trainers,.. or he'll end up like Jones Jr,... when his athleticism fades,.. he won't have the boxing skills to win big fights...

@ brownsugar: june 4th, 2009, boxingscene had an article when I google news'd Andre Ward. I think it'd be too early, i'd rather see them both get a strap and a following before they face each other, both friends, and olympians. I think if it's too early, if one of them. probably dirrell, suffers a devastating loss, he will perhaps never be the same. I dunno, froch showed some stuff agst pascal that shows, when he's thinking about jabbing, moving his head, and combination punching, he can really do it, other times he's a sitting target and likes to slug, but he does have that skill, tho it's harder to see agst someone as skillful as jermiane, he still had it, and that probably surprised the faster, quicker, but fading tayor. Anyway, exciting times in the 168-175 divisions. pc out! :)

Just wanted to say I really enjoyed Barry Tompkins calling the fight last night. He was great back in the old HBO days with Larry Merchant. Some classic calls. " How do you like it! "

I guess this makes Froch look good. I think we might be looking into the Taylor performance too much. I hope we see a better product from Froch next time.

Pascal's footwork and foot movement reminds me a bit of a Ali ("Dance like a fly, bite like a mosquito!"), quite beautiful, and how he slips punches and throws the jab. I like him more each time i see him fight, and he has a ton of heart and guts! Another good fight, he'll make me a fan! :) He ain't no roy jones, but he is his own man, and i like that man!

thanks for the feedback Mister Lee,.....if Dawson gets past Johnson,.. and I'm personally picking him to win,.. Dawson / Pascal has to happen,... even he's not nearly a star yet,. but he's the closest one in the division with any measurable name recognition left after Glen and Diaconu,.. with his wild erratic swings from unconventional angles,.. I think it would be very entertaining,.. I hope HBO makes it happen..

Yo yo mr. brownsugar! Pascal is good, but i don't see him at dawson's level. dawson has more guts, faster, better ring iq, more power, more skill, and he's the naturally bigger guy. It would be an okay fight, but pascal may not be able to be anywhere close to beating dawson. He woud actually be a perfect opponent for Bhop.... pc out! :)

Fast Eddie Lands In Germany, Says He'll Land The Shots To Upset Wlad
"An upset is possible in this as I could see Chambers boxing his way to a UD or SD, but I expect the much more likely scenario of a TKO in favor of Wlad in the middle to late rounds, in fact, I'd probably go with TKO in the 8th." --TSS reader Isaiah give Chambers a chance to get the upset win (photo by Jan Sanders)
