Money wowed the crowd in London, but Keenan wasn't buying all of it. The mal-treatment of a tech, hiding behind the iPod, Floyd showed that mix of sweet and salty that US fans have come to love and hate.

"Ray Leonard With A Dash Of Gangsta Style"

By Ronan Keenan

Three Mercedes and three SUVs, each heaving with burly, steely-eyed personnel make their way through the streets of London. This is not the cavalcade of a president, but a king.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., the returning pound-for-pound monarch of the fight game, adhered to the adage of safety in numbers as he travelled around London in a procession of luxury vehicles during his recent promotional trip to hype his ill-fated showdown with Juan Manuel Marquez.

A rib injury reportedly forced Mayweather to postpone the proposed July event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but some reports suggest demand for tickets was far below expectations, with Steve Kim of Maxboxing revealing that no more than 3,000 were sold.

Conversely, during his British sojourn Mayweather showed the ability to surround himself with a sizeable crowd that wasn’t on his payroll. Approximately 3,000 fans crammed into London’s Peacock Gym to witness a public workout and enthusiastically holler every move the unbeaten welterweight made during a sequence of routine exercises.

Such a turnout for Mayweather was unforeseen and despite boxing’s flirtation with mainstream status in the UK, few fighters have ever drawn such attention on a promotional visit. The feat is all the more remarkable given that the American was hyping a fight to be contested against a Mexican in Nevada.

Mayweather’s performances during his three-day visit matched his superstar billing. He mixed together a boyish charm with fleeting arrogance, producing a persona akin to Ray Leonard with a dash of gangsta style.

Mayweather’s former promoter Bob Arum once predicted that if marketed as an all-American wholesome athlete, his charge would become the most famous black boxing celebrity since Mike Tyson. And while the 32-year-old prizefighter has achieved such a standing, he has done so by diverging from Arum’s advice and embracing a flagrantly noxious attitude.

Such a persona has been on full display in recent weeks, most notably when Mayweather spitefully battled with ESPN’s Brian Kenny when the interviewer dared question the fighter’s credentials. But London presented Mayweather with a fresh set of potential admirers that were eager to anoint him as a prodigious entity.  Mayweather held his end of the bargain and routinely churned out the sort of toothless lines that win affection from the mainstream press.

“There are no fans like the London fans and the British fans,” he said before his public workout. “I used to talk a lot of trash and that made me as big as I am. But my mother said, ‘Why do you have to do that? Just go out be respectful and just be Floyd Mayweather.’”

While he was respectful in his words, “Money May” was less deferential to an interview appointment with Sky Sports News. As his cortège arrived at the broadcaster’s studios, a Sky camera crew was on hand to relay live pictures for the network. Yet as the flock of Mayweather acquaintances emerged from their vehicles, the fighter remained in his Mercedes, reportedly catching some shuteye despite the fact that he was delaying the Sky Sports show.

Mayweather surfaced some ten minutes later, decked out in a Union Jack sweater, and proceeded to engage in charming discourse with the Sky presenters.

“My advice to kids is this: If you have a goal that you want to accomplish, never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Once I got focused, said my prayers and really believed, I could do anything. I’d tell all the young kids out there to believe in themselves,” he said in a soft voice.

Mayweather also admitted that he had provided fans with some “duff fights”, vowed to make up for such occurrences, and spoke highly of British hero Ricky Hatton, a fighter he easily defeated in 2007.

The American has a habit of being more amiable with the British media.

“People misjudge me in lots of ways,” he once told Brian Doogan of the London Times. “‘Making it rain’ [throwing a quantity cash in the air] is something people see in the hip-hop world, and that’s why I pull out the money I have and flash it on TV. We don’t mean nothing bad. We don’t mean no harm and we don’t want to make it look like we’re better than anybody else. We feel we’re even.

“Everything I got, I got legally, so when I’m on TV and entertaining, I’m basically telling kids, ‘You come from the same background I come from, the urban community. You don’t have to sell drugs to become successful. Enjoy yourself and have fun’. When people come to talk to me, they can get a chance to know me, and what I’ve been through, what I fight for.”

But on occasions during the London tour Mayweather’s demeanour conveyed a contrasting persona. When his microphone unexpectedly cut out, Mayweather scowled at the nearby technician and sharply exclaimed “where's my mic man? Come here and sort this mic out, dammit”.

Later, as he left the conference he obliged approaching fans by signing autographs and posing for photos, but did so by avoiding eye contact while listening to his iPod.

Such a combination of empathetic words and condescending mannerisms seemingly appeals to the youthful demographic, as judged by the multitudes that descended on his public workout.

Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, which is staging July’s fight, described the atmosphere surrounding Mayweather’s British appearances as “Beatlemania”. And he was only slightly hyperbolic. “Floyd’s car could not get through the crowds. People were surrounding the car, taking pictures,” said Schaefer. Such were the masses that Mayweather was reportedly forced to make the final stage of his journey to the Peacock gym on foot.

“He was very endearing to the British public,” remarked London’s former three-weight world titlist Duke McKenzie. “He wanted to come here and sell a product. He’s doing a real PR job. [The public workout] was like a Ricky Hatton weigh in.”

A higher compliment cannot be paid to a fighter in Britain, and Mayweather achieved such eminence through his own 21st century model of image management.

Editor Mike:  Hey crew---I do not care for it when people try and bust on Floyd by calling him "Gayweather." I know it's an easy rhyme, but it's an uncool slam on gay people, and I won't have it on this site. Wanna bust his chops, find another way, OK? There have been a bunch of gay fighters who will kick all our butts from here to 2020, BTW...

rudy:  How about PBF = Pretty Broke Floyd? Maybe Fraud Ribfaker? Needs Money Mayweather? IRS Wants My Money May??
Friday Jun 19, 2009 11:54:04 AM
rudy:  And I'm calling BS on Schaefer, he's the promoter, just hyping this fool up. Ticket sales where HORRIBLE for his 'return.'
Friday Jun 19, 2009 11:55:13 AM
AFN@EdMike and Rudy:  Well Mike, you've started something now, and good ol' boy Rudy has made an excellent beginning. As to the article, what can you expect from Brits? I mean, we were the people that behaved as if Hamed was a boxing legend, and not just a sad chubby-to-be clown. Man, there's no hope for us. Toonoy

MisterLee @ Andy from newcastle:  that's hilarious! hahaha.... I don't know what Scareweather is talking about "Duff" fights. Scareweather henry brusseles fight was an instant hit! fight of the century! Floyd even had time to discuss his favorite NFL team and his favorite player with Jim Lampley DuRING the fight! How exciting! :)
Friday Jun 19, 2009 12:45:03 PM
Salt lover:  and here we go again, more and more criticism against Floyd Mayweather Jr. There's some things that can never change, and one of those things is the public's perception of this great, talented boxer. 'Pretty Boy' Floyd Mayweather Jr is a great boxer, and truly the most talented fighter in our era. Props to this great dude!........regardless, of the people's negative perception of him. Peace dudes (Including you Mayweather haters).

deepwater:  Floyd is no gangster. he is a clown who pays hoodlums to hang around him. his"friends" ripped off a few million of his bling.Floyd never had to work a job in his life. he is no gangster just a wannabe
Friday Jun 19, 2009 12:59:16 PM
deepwater:  no free speech at the sweet science. my post was removed.

MisterLee:  youtube: "Floyd mayweather talks to jim lampley during a fight". It's hilarious! :)
Friday Jun 19, 2009 01:31:01 PM
Real Talk @ deepwater:  He aint saying Floyd is a gangster or gaNGSTA . Woops ...caps , he's saying his persona has a splash of gangsta . How we say keepin it gangsta with you . It's a sayin that has more than one meaning like forget about it or how we say in D.C. (bammas) . Dueces
Friday Jun 19, 2009 01:33:50 PM
MisterLee @ deepwater:  Dude, EM just told everyone to not use that term. How would you know how it makes a Gay person feels? You have no idea if there are Gay boxers or readers signing in, or if some of the fight writers are gay etc. Words can be condescending and immature. It's like back in the early 90's when the term "politically correct" was created to basically protect the rights of blacks and minorities, and then conservative white politicians complained so much about how "everything has to be so politically correct" now as if they were some kind of victims. Why can't these white pple scream the "n" word out in the streets, or call italians "whops" or asians "slants" like the good ole' days. Same thing here man, you're not being culturally sensitive to a certain population in the US. Muslims have had it rough recently, and gays still a little bit, but I guess ain't never gonna be perfect. And if nothing else, EM going to lay the smackdown on your comment b/c as the editor he already said that comment is off limits. Pc out!
Friday Jun 19, 2009 02:29:48 PM
MisterLee:  In the words of 50 cent after he got in a small scrap with Floyd: "He has a small body, but in his head he's like King Kong."
Friday Jun 19, 2009 02:31:29 PM
deepwater:  Well im straight , i live in greenwich village in nyc.My girlfriend has a bunch of gay friends they come over all the time. you should hear what they say. they use the word gay more than anyone. they like calling each other queens. They are open and honest about being gay.I guess if your in the closet or ashamed it would bother you. my point is that I dont think its hateful or mean to use the word g#$weather and the gay people i know wouldnt mind it. im sorry if i offended anyone.
Friday Jun 19, 2009 02:40:06 PM
deepwater:  i will just call him fraud mayweather then.
Friday Jun 19, 2009 02:40:50 PM
EM:  Free speech yes, "hate" speech no.
Friday Jun 19, 2009 02:53:31 PM
MisterLee:  Ha, thanks for confirming your sexual orientation, i'm sure we were all dying to know. African Americans use the "n" word amongst each other all the time, a Chinese guy can call another "chink" or "gook" in a playful way, but if you are out of the group and you say it, you gonna get a beatdown. I have gay friends too, and that is why I am standing up for their rights or dignity. Anyway, on to boxing.... WBC orders a title elimination match between Andre Dirrell and Andre Ward.. I wonder if this ruins ward's pursuit of the belt by that Karoly Kyostoiok (exaggerated spelling) guy, who was the weak link of the supermiddleweight belt holders. Them facing each other would make it harder for both of them to get a belt earlier on and later set up a big title fight agst each other. However, without doubt, Ward would 60-40 whoops his A*(@$ and take advantage of all his shortcomings. Ward is a far better and more complete fighter. I don't care who the Fatrix is. Pc out, tss rules!
Friday Jun 19, 2009 03:20:54 PM
Scott:  Hey: I enjoy this site better than most and also like to read the comments that everyone posts. So let's adhere to a few easly rules that Editor Mike is suggesting and keep the site viable because we've all seen where these things go, you know, if we try to play the free speech card which for some means they can insult anyone they please. Peace!
Friday Jun 19, 2009 04:19:12 PM
ali @ Editor Mike:  I don't see what's wrong with saying Gayweather now if someone said fagweather or queerweather I would understand why you don't want those words used on TSS. But out respect for anyone on TSS who may be offended by it I won't use it.
Friday Jun 19, 2009 05:03:07 PM
MisterLee:  Froch Pascal is a winner! one of the most exciting fights i ever seen! Froch is hugely underrated, underrated heart, chin, and boxing ability. I guess taylor didn't see this fighting coming in . froch has great endurance too. Too bad ward is gonna end his career man, oh well. froch is really good tho, so we go allan green in the mix, dirrell the "fatrix" , miranda is still gate keeper, abraham thinking of moving up, maybe pavlik eventually, bute, froch, pascal, Dawson who can always stay where he is or move down.... the supermiddleweight division is really shaping up! :)
Friday Jun 19, 2009 05:05:01 PM
EM:  Thanks. Maybe some don't intend it to be hurtful but they are using it to denigrate, and if someone is born gay (just as they are born black, or Hispanic or whatever), then why are we hating on them? Why imply that he is gay, and imply that makes him lesser human being...Now, if someone acts in a way u don't find agreeable, and they do so out of their own free will, then it is fair game to bust on them. So if you or someone else thinks Floyd's a "fraud" because he avoids the best at 147, then I think Fraudweather is fair game. I am not a fan of political correctness, but I am also not a fan of people slamming certain groups out of ignorance, and unfounded hatred. And I don't really care for groups who use words considered vile in some circles, and claiming them as their own, and throwing them around indiscriminately, either. Anyway--thanks for complying with the rules and regs in here that helps keep this forum on track!!!
Friday Jun 19, 2009 05:45:10 PM
MisterLee:  Scareweather it is! Free the don! Fraud Scareweather Punier! :) Don will be out before pacquiao or scareweather's next fight fo' sho! :)

brownsugar:  I bought what I thought was a fight dvd a couple years ago call.... "Ring of Fire",.. thinking it was going to full of hot blazing boxing action and the featured some well known boxers burning desire to be the best,... But it was about the "other" burning desire,.. the secret burning,.. flaming desire of former Middle Weight Champ Emile Griffith,.. The guy that Emile killed in the ring knew about Emile's secret rendevouz and unspoken passions so before they fought,... either on the same day or relatively close to the same day his opponent told Emile that he knew his secret and called him a queer among other things,.. he gave Emile a first class ridiculing on the subject,.. In those days (the 60's, I think),.. Emiles opponent couldn't have made a more wreckless comment,.. Emile never "considered" or "acknowleged" himself as being gay publically,.. as history records Emile put the guy in comma during their fight as the ref watched him unload nearly 40 punches against the guy who was being held up by the ring post... after his opponent died,..BOXING, which was one of the most popular and televised sports on network TV,..suddenly died and was forced into the closet along with Emile Griffith,..It's a good history piece,.. I'd recommend anybody to watch it,.. and don't worry,.. it's nothing like BrokeBack Mountain...
Friday Jun 19, 2009 06:14:19 PM
brownsugar:  I can see why Mayweather felt like he could let his guard down in London,... the British are great folks to be around,.. The British aren't perfect and they skeletons enough in their own closets,.. but they aren't scarred with the taint of racial bias and prejudice like many of their trans-Atlantic American brethren(at least not against american blacks),.. A black person to the British is just another person,.. There is not space enought for me to descibe the fun and freedom we enjoyed thruout the "British Empire" in our Navy days,... British Port.. like England,.. Austrailia,.. and all the others in between were some of the most hospitable and accomodating places we ever visited,.. those blokes know who to party and have a good time,.. they won't let you spend a dime of your own money,.. and after your well fed and drunk they'll try to take you home to meet their daughters and sisters,... I kid you not,.. I can see why Money May showed a more pleasant side over there,.. he couldn't help it,.. I tip my hat to Brittan every time I tip my mug of Pilsner Ale....and after the 15 years or so since I visited,... they've finally learned how to box...and appreciate American Boxers,.. (all due respect to Marvelous Marvin)
Friday Jun 19, 2009 07:56:13 PM
ultimoshogun:  Yeah brownsugar, "Ring of Fire" is a great documentary. Benny "Kid" Paret is the fighter Griffith killed in the ring sadly. The ending is probably the saddest thing I've ever seen.
Friday Jun 19, 2009 07:59:28 PM
brownsugar:  Ultimoshogun,.. your so right,.. that fight ruined Emile because he lost his instinct to finish off guys he had hurt,.. and would sometimes hold back after getting guys stunned... (thanks for posting Parret's name, I was feeling too lazy to google it)
Friday Jun 19, 2009 10:15:40 PM
Fe'Roz :  The word Paret never got to say again was "maricon". The intent, no matter how it's used, is to malign. Props to EM on this one. As for Floyd, he will never be loved by all...but if he would challenge and defeat two or three top Welters, he would earn the respect he....and others...believe he deserves.
Friday Jun 19, 2009 10:24:23 PM
the Roast:  About the article, if the Roast can steer the car back to the road, Floyd is like Sugar Ray without the guts and pure will to win. What would Leonard have been if he didnt dare to be great, taking on Benitez, Duran, Hearns, and Hagler? Floyd has the same chance now with Pacman, Cotto, Mosley, Williams, and Margarito. Will he go for it? Come on Floyd, lay it on the line!
Friday Jun 19, 2009 10:38:30 PM
brownsugar:  Floyds also been posing in pictures with the US ARMY(posted around the net),.. I think he was holding a flag,.. hugging a soldier with a big grin on his face,.. If he doesn't stop and go back to his villianous ways,.. I think I'll puke...
Saturday Jun 20, 2009 05:13:58 AM
Fe'Roz :  There is a incredible collection of contradictory quotes by Floyd over the years on the BoxingInsider site. Floyd is having an identity problem right now. He is shifting his PR tactics without a strategy. That's as bad for business......as it is in a fight. He's all over the place. nice guy one day, obnoxious villan the next. confident he's the best....but only f he can put down everyone else. The most telliing recent quote of note was him refusing Shane because of 5 losses when he foughtBaldomir with 9. Floyd needs to do what Manny and Cotto do. Fight the best in his division or above now.........or move on.
Saturday Jun 20, 2009 10:22:17 AM
MisterLee:  Where before I saw floyd as a nice guy in person, and a "bad guy" in promoting fights, I really think this guy is pretty insecure with himself, wants public recognition and to be the best, but he's scare of looking bad or putting himself out there. Scared of taking chances. And he's finaly hit the wall where his perception of himself and the public/reality meet, and he's not liking what he sees. The guy really thrives in the ring, outside of it he's a mess. That's all I"m gonna say for now. Pc out! :)
Saturday Jun 20, 2009 01:41:10 PM
Real Talk:  Hate em or love em , that's one of the sharpest dudes to lace up a pair . I agree that he should fight the best and the cash will come . If he doesn't he will always regret it and wonder what if ??? That's one of the reasons Ray came back to fight Hagler . May is like a cross between Ray and Sweat Pea . I think Ray let Hagler get the bigger purse for fight concessions , and still made more money because of endorsements an other promotional stuff . It's 2 sides to every human being , a good side an a dark side . All of of are capable of doing heroic good deeds or committing acts of atrocity . That's the complex nature of man . No one is exempt ! I feel like enough talk , like the great ref Mills Lane says ........LET'S GET IT ON !!!!!! Dueces
Saturday Jun 20, 2009 02:14:34 PM
MisterLee @ Real Talk:  Great post.
Saturday Jun 20, 2009 03:13:17 PM
AFisherGBlue:  Let's look at the journalistic uncovering of the ticket sales...Did the investigative reporter do any more than going thru the ticket agent's buying process and not check out or put the $3k worh of tickets in his basket? Anyone can go online to ticket outlets and do that...only people very privy to that promotion would know true sales digits...I'm just wonderin'....
Saturday Jun 20, 2009 04:11:13 PM
AFN putting it straight-so to speak:  I think we are all missing the point here. I'm sure Mike is just saying that gay people will be offended if they are compared to WussWeather. He's have failed auditions for the Village People cos he's such a girl (no offence meant to females there, Mike. Anyway, nice that Duke McKenzie got a call out, though the McKenzie brothers were never the same after that intercity express train ended up in their back garden. British Rail, man, what they like? And finally, nice to see Mackem Ross Pierson, win a contract to the UFC last night. Well done SMB Ross. Toonoy

#1 Pacfan "P4P Legend":  I've always liked Chickenfeather, like you many say he is sharp as hell but afraid to face the best. One of the most technical fighters ever but lacks power to finish the job. I'm a power puncher type of guy so don't hate. Payce out.
Sunday Jun 21, 2009 04:53:25 PM
brownsugar:  the rumors of poor ticket sales and covert negotiations to secure a fight with Pacman is just a product of internet speculation,.. the Las Vegas Times reported that Schaffaer said over $$5.5Million in tiks have been committed already and the fight is still scheduled to resume when Mayweather is better,.. While I personally won't debate the statement,.. One thing I know for sure,.. deep down in my "knower",.. is,.. when (and if) the fights take place,.. Latinos will pack the house,..In addition to the Avid Vegas fight crowd,..(expect to see the usual Celebrities at ring side from Jack Nicholson to the regular roster of NFL and NBA stars who frequent these events),.. Marquez has also said that his camp is just waiting for when the doctor say the fight can resume... Marquez is not even seeking another fight... and is treating the situation as a delay only...

Anony:  I OFFICIALY WANT TO SAY THAT I HATE FADEWEATHER AND HIS PERSONA. HE IS THE WORST EXAMPLE A BOY FROM THE HOOD CAN GET. PERIOD. BESIDES, HE STILL IS (WAS?) THE MOST CHICKEN WELTERWEIGHT IN THE DIVISION. THAT'S HIS LEGACY.
Monday Jun 22, 2009 08:28:33 PM
EM:  Thanks guys for being cool with my plea not to use that offensive term for Floyd. I appreciate it!

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
