Miranda is his usual confident self going into Saturday's clash with the local boy Ward. Will Ward's more refined technique carry him past the masher Miranda? (Photo by Jan Sanders)

Miranda: "I Will Knock Ward Out!"

EDISON MIRANDA: ‘Andre Ward has zero chance to win this fight. I will knock him out!”

Six Questions with the Colombian Knockout Artist who faces

Gold medal winner Saturday night on a Primetime Edition of

ShoBox: The New Generation  Live on SHOWTIME®, 9 p.m. ET/PT

NEW YORK (May 13, 2009) — Edison Miranda has not been shy about how he feels about Andre Ward, his opponent in Saturday’s colossal super middleweight battle in Ward’s hometown of Oakland, Calif.

“I can’t wait to get in the ring and to get into his face because I have no respect for Ward,” said Miranda (32-3, 28 KOs). “No, I wasn’t surprised when he called and wanted to fight me. I’ll fight anybody. I can’t wait for Saturday night to show the world who Edison Miranda is and that I’m going to be the champion.”

The 12-round fight at the Oracle Arena for Ward’s North American Boxing Organization (NABO) and North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super middleweight titles will be the featured bout on a special Saturday primetime edition of ShoBox: The New Generation, live on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

Miranda, who’s promoted by Seminole Warriors Boxing, answered six questions posed by SHOWTIME earlier this week about his thoughts on the unbeaten Ward (18-0, 12 KOs).

SHOWTIME: What is your prediction for Saturday night?

MIRANDA: “I have said it before: I have no respect for Andre Ward. Andre Ward has zero chance to win this fight. I will knock him out in the 10th round. In the 10th round, he will go down.”

SHOWTIME: You say you have no respect for Andre Ward? Do you respect any of your opponents?

MIRANDA: “I respect Ward as a person and as a man but the second we enter that ring that’s all gone. I respect no one in the ring. That’s how I feel for whoever I fight. Actually, the second they tell me I’m going to fight someone I lose all respect for them. Ward hasn’t accomplished anything besides a gold medal, and I’m very surprised he even got that. When you look at my career you see that in my first 21 fights I knocked every one of them out. So I don’t think Andre has what it takes to win. On Saturday he’s going to see what it’s like to be in the ring with a real man and what it’s like to get hit by a real man.”

SHOWTIME: Does constant questions about your early childhood—how you were raised on the streets of Colombia—bother you?

MIRANDA: “No, it doesn’t bother me at all. They can talk about it all they want but for me I don’t want to think about that. I want to think about the present and the future. The only thing I’m thinking about right now is Andre Ward.”

SHOWTIME: Is there anything that people would be shocked to know or do not know about you?

MIRANDA: “No, there is nothing that the public doesn’t know about me. I’ve never hidden anything and I don’t have any secrets. There are no surprises with me.”

SHOWTIME: You invited to fly Carl Froch from England to Oakland to watch Saturday’s fight. Has he responded to that?

MIRANDA: “I haven’t really thought about that. I’ve been so focused on training. Although I put the invitation out there I haven’t really followed up on it. I was serious to invite him and I really wanted him there but looking back maybe it was a mistake to invite him. Let’s just say he took me up on the invitation. Once he sees what I’m going to do to Ward he would never think of getting into the ring with me.”

SHOWTIME: Is there a sense of urgency with this fight? Do you feel like you have to win this fight to be recognized as one of the best in the 168-pound division?

MIRANDA: “I have no anticipation for this fight or urgency because if I did feel that I had something to prove then I would think I was going to lose. I’m not in that mentality. The fact is that I’m going to win.”

Saturday’s event will be being promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions in association with  Leonard Productions. The Ward-Miranda bout will be presented in association with Seminole Warriors Boxing. Tickets, starting at $25 are on sale at the Oracle Box Office and through Ticketmaster. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. PT. The first non-televised fight is at 5 p.m. PT.

RIVERSIDE:  this fight is good for boxing, congrats. to andre ward in stepping into the real show, miranda is no easy fight, id like to see other young fighter step up

Isaiah:  Miranda has been in there with real competion and although he lost to Arthur Abraham and Kelly Pavlik, Miranda can still throw down with any top 10 guy. That punching power can not be ignored. Andre Ward is a fake and he will be exsposed big time in this fight.

in touch :  Classic tough guy interview; reveals nothing intelligent. It's the same stuff repeated over and over: "I have no respect for him." "i'm gonna knock him out." "I respect no one in the ring." Blah, blah, blah. Hate these typical answers. That's why sugar ray leonard was so interesting and made the public want to watch him. and a guy name oscar. Intellect is somewhat recognized.

ali:  Miranda compared this fight to Trindad vs vs Vargas I don't know about all that but I do think Ward will have to be very focus though out the fight cause Miranda has one punch KO power

brownsugar:  It's all going according to script,.. saw the photos of the weigh-in,.. Miranda looks lean,.. but his face also looks like he's gained 5-10years in his last couple of years in the ring,..(or perhaps out of the ring,.. the Puerto Rican nite life can sapp a lot of strength out of a young man) also his trash talk is on auto pilot,.. and I get the impression of a guy that has "buyers-remorse",.. (how do I get out of this contract?),.. Ward promised to be right in front of Miranda,.. not giving an inch and has so much as said that he'll be the agressor,.. if Ward destroys him,.. I hope they don't start with that ...."Well you-know he was a shot fighter" ....routine...

Nate:  I love Miranda, he's the freakin man! Was mad and sad as crap when he lost to Abraham. His fight with Pavlik is actually my favorite of all time. I think and hope he does knock Ward the heck out. I got Miranda in 8. Then he'll go and knock Froch the fudge out and get some gold!

Radam G, a humble PacManite trekking and twittering from Luzon, PI:  This will be a very easy night for SOG. He is going to kayo Miranda in grand fashion. This cocky big mouth of the Caribbean is going to get a couple of fat lips. He will probably be eating soup for a bit. Andre Ward has a couple of fists with a map to Miranda's jawbones. They will be broken bones. SOG win by kayo in the third or fourth round. In the words of the DON, "You heard it here, first! Holla back, Ladies. Holla!

Anony @ brownsugar:  SHOT FIGHTER??? If Ward wins this one it will only mean that he is ready for Pavlik or Abraham and he belongs up there. For Miranda it will mean the harsh reality that he is more of a "gate keeper" as one author said recently.. it means, that everybody who wants to be big needs to past the "Miranda test". I really can't wait, Miranda is all heart and power. Why do you think he got KO by Abraham and Pavlik??? He is so confident on his power that he forgets about his defense. At this point of his career maybe he fixed this flaw. PANTERA 8 ROUND KO!!!!!!! Does anyone remember what Abraham brother did to him when he got KO??? That was truly a sad day for boxing....

MisterLee:  Miranda can only walk down and beat up B fighters or C fighters. He's dependent on his chin and his firepower. If he can't walk you down and blow you away, he's helpless. He's got crazy power, but that means nothing agst a multi-faceted fighter like Ward. Ward will dance circles around Miranda and it'l be target practice. Miranda's got guts and heart, but he doesn't have enough skills to keep off an A fighter. Should be a good fight. Pc out! :)

MisterLee:  what happened to miranda and abraham's brother? Oh yeah, and to me, miranda lost twice, the first fight with abraham was just horrible, miranda broke that mofo's jaw, or ya'll musta forgot! That made me look at abraham differently, he's only a B+ fighter in my book, the guy only has the peek-a-boo defense and his big roundhouse punches. He's a two-dimensional fighter and overrated. Pavlik needs a new trainer. Pc out!
Thursday May 14, 2009 01:51:44 PM
Anony @ Mister Lee:  That's exactly what we will find out... if Ward is an "A" fighter or not. In the meantime I'll stay with the more experienced "demolition man".... Nobody knows who is going to win but I'm sensing this one will be JUST A GREAT FIGHT!!!!! I'm hyped up and everything, Tomorrow I'll have my six pack in the freezer and... cough! cough! cough!!! a little during the fight... hehehehe... nothing like the tropics!!!!! hehehehe
Thursday May 14, 2009 02:58:29 PM
MisterLee:  Yo yo.. TSS unofficial fan scorecard by Mister Lee will read: 10-9 Ward, 10-9 Ward, 10-9 ward, 10-9 ward, 10-8 ward, 10-7 ward, winner by TKO rd 6. Pc out :)...
Thursday May 14, 2009 06:45:18 PM
brownsugar:  Anony,.. I hear you,.. and your right,. Ward must traverse the early "danger zone",.. rounds 1-5, when Miranda will be at his most Lethal,.. if he hopes to win,.. but there is a misconception that Ward is fragile and must avoid the right hand at all costs,.. personally I think Ward can soak up his share of punishment,.. and I'm sure he hasn't been sparring with butter-punching welterweights in preparation for this fight,.. We should see Ward at his precise best tommorrow,.. I wouldn't even rule out Ward shocking Miranda early,.. I'm sure Mister Lee will be serving up an excellent cuisine of "Crow under Glass" in abundant quanities if Ward can pass this test,.. which I believe he will....

Ron:  Miranda is just a glorified journey man who can spit a good game. He got many boxing fans thinking he's the biggest threat in the division. His best weapon is his mouth.he has very limited skills. His so called power won't be a factor at 168lbs. He's too slow to set and throw punches and he will certainly get picked apart by the more polished ward. Miranda has a very questionnable chin as well. Ward will use his superior hand speed and movement to confuse the hell out of Miranda.I won't be surprise if ward knocks him out . Miranda has very poor defense, terrible leg work ,stiff and robotic and can't box.tomorrow night, Andre will confirm that. Watch for ward to outboxing him on his way to a unanimous dec or ko win. Miranda is garbage
Friday May 15, 2009 08:17:53 PM
Anony @ Ron:  First time I see you around here and you call a boxer "garbage" when he has won 90% of his fights via knockout??? You surely have done a great introduction of yourself... I'll be checking you up after the fight. Miranda by KO - 10th round.
Saturday May 16, 2009 07:25:26 AM
brownsugar:  Ron your call was on the money
Saturday May 16, 2009 09:02:02 PM
Ron:  I'm sorry Anony. Let me formally introduce myself to you. I'm Ron, a boxing analyst. Miranda confirmed exactly what i thought of him. Mechanical, clumsy, one-dimensional fighter. My intent was never to diss Miranda, it was simply to point out his flaws. His punches dont mean nothing if he can't launch them within range. He has poor balance and it was obvious to me that Ward would capitalize by giving himself angles and using his superior speed. His 90% KO ratio that you are referring to were in most part against smaller foes. But against a more complete fighter like Ward, it was not evident. Re-read what I wrote and watch the fight again and when you get over the defeat of Pantera, come back here and give me my props! I love boxing. Next stop, Angulo vs Cintron. Glad to meet you Anony. No hard feelings.

Ron:  As anyone seen anony anywhere?! I think he was looking for me.LOL Thanks for the acknowledgment brownsugar, respect to you.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
