Chad Dawson Wins Rematch, Who's Next?
By David A. Avila
Former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver brought his “A” game this time but it still was not enough against IBF and IBO light heavyweight titleholder Chad Dawson who took another decision on Saturday in the battle of southpaws.
The rematch between Dawson and Tarver (27-6, 19 KOs) saw the older fighter more aggressive and land more blows than in the first fight, but at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas it still wasn’t enough according to the judges.
In their first fight back in October, it was Dawson’s speed and youth that proved much too much for the older Tarver, 40, who seemed resigned to land one big punch and end the fight. Instead, Tarver was dropped toward the end of the fight and was blown out by his younger counter part.
The rematch saw Tarver throw more punches, move Dawson backward at times, and come better prepared.
But Dawson’s speed in the beginning and combination punching allowed him to find the openings in Tarvers gloved defense. Every time Dawson unloaded his flurries Tarver hid behind his gloves and seldom fired back until it was safe.
Around the third round, after Buddy McGirt bellowed in his ear to stand his ground,
Tarver finally began to understand that he was not going to win by covering up. The punches began rolling out and have Dawson something to think about. But not much.
“He pushed the fight,” said Dawson (28-0, 17 KOs).
In the seventh round Tarver landed some left hands that connected solidly. In the eighth round a roundhouse left found Dawson’s jaw, but all in all, it was Dawson whose punches seemed to snap more than Tarvers.
For most of the fight Dawson used his right jab like a snapping cobra that pierced Tarver’s guard repeatedly. It seemed he could land the punch whenever he desired. That jab was the champion’s primary weapon and he resorted to it whenever the outcome of a round was in doubt. For good measure, lefts and rights to the body also scored in abundance for Dawson.
Tarver had hoped he did enough to win the fight, he did more, but it wasn’t nearly enough. Dawson applauded Tarver’s effort.
“Antonio Tarver did a good job,” said Dawson who remains undefeated. “He took me out of my game plan.”
All three judges had Dawson winning comfortably 116-112, 117-111 twice.
“He fought a hell of a fight,” Dawson said of Tarver. “He pushed the fight.”
Who’s next for Dawson? Who can push the slender light heavyweight out of Hartford?
HBO’s Max Kellerman suggested Glen Johnson who nearly beat Dawson when they fought. But Johnson couldn’t sell out a YMCA gym.
Bernard Hopkins told ESPN this past Friday that he’s willing to fight Dawson but that money being offered is ridiculous.
Dawson may be the best light heavyweight in the world but needs a popular opponent to excite the fans.
Female bout
New York’s Melissa Hernandez out-slicked Missouri’s Jeri Sitzes who gave a good showing but wasn’t able to match the skill level according to the judges in the featherweight match.

That's great that Tarver, implored by Buddy McGirt, did so well. And it sounds like no matter what Glen Johnson deserves his own rematch with Dawson no matter his apparent anonymity. As for "Huracan," maybe Melissa Hernandez is Womyn's boxing as she is fond of declaring.

Big Ste. SMB look safe after their point on Saturday, and West Brom have made it a nail biting finish. You're right, Monday will make a difference to our survival. I'll be heading home early to catch the second half. Just a shame if we do go down we can't take the SMB with us. Toonoy
As to last night. Well, I am far from Tarver's biggest fan, but I have to say I was impressed with him last night. 116-112 would have been fair. I had it much closer at 115-113, but in retrospect, I was probably fooled by Tarver's work rate, rather than the effectiveness and accuracy of his shots. Dawson put on a performance, not unlike his one against Johnson (only I had him losing that one), and he shows willing to take one to land one. All in all, a surprisingly good fight, fair decision, and Tarver has shown me no reason to hang up the gloves yet. Dawson MUST fight Johnson again. It is the only match that makes real sense. Come on Road Warrior. Toonoy

A disappointment. Tarver is awful, so Dawson's inability to get him out of there was putrid. His stock plummeted last night like one of those bank stocks over the course of the last year. He's now a penny stock. The saddest part of it all is this means we'll have to get MORE Tarver, because he won't retire after this. I don't know why HBO continues to give him airtime. In my opinion, he doesn't belong even on the undercard of a Versus women's boxing event. Now we'll continue to get more Tarver. More Tarver is like Swine Flu. Can't we just get rid of it already? Contain it? Hopefully he goes to cruiserweight and is knocked out brutally and retires permanently.

Big Daddy Hates HBO Welfare:

Why is Chad Dawson fighting in Vegas? I bet there wasn't more than 500 paying fans , and the other 500 ppl. there were comps. Dawson is never going to have any leverage, until he builds a Fan Base. He needs to fight nearer to home. Waving an HBO Welfare Check at other great fighters isn't going to work, because they can probably get it on their own.

That was only slightly less dull than I expected. Dawson HAS to fight Glen Johnson in his next bout. Dawson is a good fighter but he needs an aggressive opponent to bring out his best. Dawson vs Hopkins is a waste of time. Pose fest. Maybe they could faint each other to oblivion. Come on Chad, fight the Road Warrior before he gets any older.

I watched the fight twice and actually enjoyed it more the 2nd time around,.. Tarver has a spoiling style,.. that nitpicks his opponents with agression, movement and defense until he can land a hard left,.. or win a boring war of attrician,.. Tarver isn't much fun to watch but he is very crafty in the ring,..Dawson did very well to dominate Tarver without fallin into his traps,.. It's very hard to look good against him,.. Now with Tarver finally out of the way,.. it's time to defend or unify,.. I never saw or heard much of the other Three LH champs,.. except Diaconu,.. surely that would be meaningful bout,.. or he could fight the young upstart Travis Cloud who's been begging for a title shot for the last 18months,.. and then there's Glen,.. I thought Dawson survived some potentially very dangerous situations to overcome Glen... but the closeness of the fight absolutely warrants a mandatory rematch,.. besides Glen ain't gettin no younger,.. Dawson should be glad to rematch him,.. forget about the 2 dinosaurs,.. Calzaghe and Hopkins,.. they are the past and won't be fighting him in our lifetime,.. neither do I see any super middleweights stepping up,.. or cruisers stepping down,.. Dawsons' going to have to be creative to stand out in the crowded world of Boxing,.. in which new stars arrive continuously....rematching Glen would be a very good place to start... another win would at least make him the "Man" at 175....

Dawson is stuck where he began, to me, this fight made him take one step forward but two steps back. Dawson is a decent fighter and deserves his place in the p4p top 10 but a win over Johnson again isn't gonna do much except please us hardcore fans. It's pretty obvious that Dawson has nothing to lose by taking on Cloud. I'm sure HBO can build this up into something the casual fans might at least consider watching and great for us. Both guys are undefeated. Cloud is not proven at world level but hey he deserves his shot. Hopkins is quite happy trying to land fights in which he believes he is the more skilled, so Dawson/Hopkins will never happen. For Hopkins it'll be too reminiscent of Taylor.

Why the hate for Dawson? WE ALL KNEW THE OUTCOME of this fight when it was made, so what if he had a sub par performance against a guy who he already dominated?? He took the fight for the $. I would still take him over Hopkins, but against Calzaghe its a way tougher task.

I don't think that Dawson had a subpar performance as much as he faced a well prepared and determined Antonio Tarver,.. who looked as good as he's ever looked in the last 4 years,.. and How could Calzaghe be a harder fight than Hopkins??? when he barely edged Hopkins by the slimmest of margins,.. and was extended the full distance by shot Roy Jones???,.. no contest,.. ... I guarantee you won't hear a contradictory peep from Joe about fighting any prime boxer,.. even if he did decide to box again....Jim Lampley or was it Max Kellerman who kept saying "if Dawson has an impressivie showing,.. then maybe
Calzaghe could be lured out of retirement to prove his P4P supremacy at 175".. As if JC was watching the fight .., being the sole judge and jury of whether Dawson is worthy enough to return from retirement to retain some imaginary P4P crown,..a laughable sentiment at best...Partly because both Hopkins and Calzaghe both only had one solitary fight at LH before they were both rated #1 in the division,...(Hopkins beat a weight drained Tarver,.. and Joe beat a defensive minded Hopkins). This Tarver fight was a necessary evil because of the rematch clause,.. but Dawson must surely be seasoned enough by now for all comers including Glen, Cloud, and Diaconu..

It bothers the hell out of me that Lampley, Stewart and Kellerman always contradict themselves. One Johnson never knocked down Chad. Two Tarver is not a newlywed. Three when is being raised by both parents is bad thing. If he so dull then why give a contract with the network. Roy Jones went through the same thing with competition.

Looks like Hopkins is looking for a fight with Froch so hopefully Dawson will move on and fight again as soon as possible, Johnson would be the most suitable but I agree with BIG DADDY that Dawson needs to get busy with promo and big fights asap as he's currently gonna struggle to pay the bills on PPV. As for Froch fancying Hopkins, could be a money spinner but a bad move for our boy Froch though, I worry that Carl could be thoroughly embarassed and mugged of his title. Just don't think he has the speed and ring smarts to close the frustrating B-Hop down.

I agree with Bigs....Daddy and Ste. Dawson has no fan base and Froch will get de-frocked by B-Hop. Regarding Chad, this guy no doubt talented....but man is he tentative. Was anybody other than theHBO team seriously worried that Tarver would counter Chad's jab with a serious Left. Tarver was so slow and his punches so unthreatening, no one needs to pay to see him again. He could barely tap Chad let alone hurt him. Chad should have attacked him to his aged body and taken him out. I was fast-forwarding the fight praying Chad would do something to make me want to see him again soon. Why did he need to hold onto Tarver after he launched his shots. Certainly not to protect himself from grave danger. And when he got inside, he didn't throw punches. He gave away his natural advantage and gained nothing. As for King Carl, with all of his flaws, B-Hop would school him all night long. And since we've seen that lesson before, I'd prefer not to have to see it again.

Great point about Hopkins barely losing to Calzaghe, I like Dawson over Hopkins so why not take him over Calzaghe since he's a crisp combination puncher with great speed. And people, dont forget Dawson is coming off a hand injury!!!! He still whooped a game Tarver.

This rematch proves nothing. It wasn't needed. Tarver was a lot more competive, but he still can't beat Dawson. I want the Dawson/Glen Johnson rematch as much as anyone but the most meanigful match to be made in this division is still Dawson/Hopkins for the Ring Magazine world lightheavyweight championship. If Dawson won the title, then it would be perfect timing to more solidly beat Johnson for an awesome first tile defense before the "old" guys retire.

Anyone know what is up with Mikkel Kessler? Hasn't fought in 6 months, no fights scheduled. Predict he would KTFO Allen Green and Lucian Bute. Beat Froch by decision or late round TKO and have him as slight favorite over Dawson at 168. Dawson should rematch with Johnson as i think he lost that first fight.

Chad Dawson is one of the best fighters in the business today. Unfortunately there are very few good bouts for him in the LW division. A fight with Johnson may be what most boxing fans want, but it is a high risk low reward match for Dawson. If he wins, he was suppose to win because he was the younger, more talented fighter; if he losses, he is a bust. It's a no win situation. I'm sure that Hopkins will make some ridiculous demands of money to negate a beating from Dawson. A fight with Hopkins will bring him a fat paycheck, but little boxing recognition as he will be beating a 44 yr old. Chad's best bet is to fight at 168 lb and get current MW Abraham, Pavlik or Sturm or SMW Kessler.

ECM,.. I think your right,.......the Light Heavy Weights division is actually worse than the HeavyWeights,.. if such a thing could ever be possible,.. it's a shame that Dawson's win only high-lites the abymal choices he has left within in the division(with Glen being the exception and possibly Diaconu and Cloud),.. But Dawson's too good and lacks the Marquee value needed to attract a lucrative bout with anyone in the supermiddleweights division,.. Dawson keeps calling out the next best thing (financially) to a Calzaghe bout by trying to lure the supposedly still active Hopkins into the ring,.. But Hopkins is too busy trying to "Pavlik" another supermiddleweight,.. Hopkins will not give the faster stronger, naturally bigger.. and defensively superior Dawson any opportunities to further damage his legacy on the verge of what has to be an emminent retirement party (against the right chump in a last big payday bout) ....Dawson HAS to take a fight with Glen or the muscular volume puncher who calls himself Travis Cloud,.. now that Diaconu and the other obscure and reclusive belt holders seem to be content just sitting on their titles with a ku-fu death-grip similar to that of aging veteran Vernon Forrest who also seems to duck title fights like everyone in my dr's offc is trying to duck the swine flu..

I really think that HBO will force Dawson into rematching Johnson,.. since they are obiligated to televise his next fight,.. Dawsons managment has declined Glen again but there may be little choice matter (unless Glen gets the Adamak fight).. Since I'm sure the won't be in a position to throw away another 3.2million on another fight nobody went to see.

Brownsugar, Am I the only one who thought that Dawson failed to both show the explosiveness and aggression necessary to win impressively against Tarver and thus expand his fan base. I thought Antonio was there for that taking....and that Chad neither attempted to press, or worse, he couldn't because he didn't have the conditioning to do so. pc

Vernon Forrest should have his belt stripped. He hasn't fought a quality opponent since Mosely, and he's clearly been putting off the Martinez fight. Vernon Forrest is boring and Chad Dawson is heading in the same direction.

A Blog in the Hartford Courant says that while police were responding to an out of control party thrown by Dawson in New Haven where a riot was going on, a police car crashed into a car. The kids in the car died. The "chump" was only worried about getting his Bentley out of the parking lot where the fight happened. Another jerk pro athlete......

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
