Bombs Away For Melissa Hernandez & Jeri Sitzes

By David A. Avila

It’s not often that a six round bout has the possibility of outshining a world title match but that’s what you have when Melissa “Hurricane” Hernandez meets Jeri “Fists of Fury” Sitzes in a featherweight contest in Las Vegas.

New York City’s Hernandez (9-1-2, 3 KOs) is a slick, pugnacious fiery boxer who meets a boxer of equally explosive quality in Missouri’s Sitzes (14-8-1, 6 KOs) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Saturday. Tickets are still available for the Gary Shaw Productions fight card.

Hernandez likes Las Vegas. Though she’s only fought there twice and both were hard fought battles against elite fighter Layla McCarter, the memory of those fights and the crowd’s cheers served as a motivator.

“I’m seeing Vegas as almost my home town,” said Hernandez whose only loss came against McCarter then won the rematch by decision. “I love the feel that Vegas brings. The fans just love boxing”

The Bronx fighter loves lacing up the gloves and has fought as a junior featherweight all the way to lightweight. All she cares about is participating in a good scrap.

“You either love me or hate me but I’ll get a---s in the seats to watch me fight,” says Hernandez who has won a featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight world title and not in that order. “I make everyone a fan.”

In the opposite corner is an equally entertaining fighter in Sitzes whose record may not be spotless but talent wise the Missouri prizefighter packs a wallop.

“I’ve got a take no crap attitude,” says Sitzes who is also no stranger to Las Vegas. “Right now is the time to show what I can do.”

The native of Springfield, Missouri began her career as a kickboxer when she realized that she preferred boxing to the martial art.

“I have no amateur background so it would have been good to learn the fundamentals,” said Sitzes. “But since I was a professional kickboxer I couldn’t go that route. I had to learn boxing the hard way.”

One thing that can’t be taught is her toughness.

In her first pro fight it was a fighter with seven wins and no losses that handed Sitzes her first defeat. Three fights later she lost again to Mary Ortega who had 21 wins and one loss. Then, three fights later, she flew to Japan and lost by majority decision to Fujin Raika. Three fights later she was face to face with Las Vegas legend Melinda Cooper. She lost again by decision.

“She’s a great boxer. I got the utmost respect for Melinda Cooper,” says Sitzes who won the NABF title in 2006 but had to vacate the title when her mother died. “I didn’t even know boxing and I was fighting someone like Melinda. She’s just great.”

In the following fight she lost to undefeated Lisa Brown by decision. Three of those fighters became world champions.

“People look at my record and think I’m not a good fighter,” says Sitzes, 30. “Some of those decisions were all about politics. The only politics you should have is your fists.”

Sitzes knows Hernandez is a talented boxer. She participated on the same card with the Puerto Rican boxer a year ago on an all-female fight card. That night Hernandez fought against super talented Chevelle Hallback. They fought to a draw.

“All I remember from their fight was Melissa telling Chevelle to lets go in the last round and they both just threw punches,” said Sitzes who lost a close decision in a rematch that night with Lisa Brown for the world title.

“Our fight should be a title fight, but that’s ok,” Sitzes says.

Hernandez knows all about Sitzes too.

“I think Jeri is a great fighter,” Hernandez says. “You beat Jeri by being Melissa “Huracan” Hernandez.”

Both expect to light up the arena with their brand of fighting not often seen on big fight cards like the Chad Dawson and Antonio Tarver title fight.

“I love playing to the crowd and most of all kicking someone’s a—without catching a case,” says Hernandez laughing.

Sitzes has her own plans too.

“If she gets defensive on me it’s gonna hurt,” Sitzes promises. “I’m going to be patient but still throwing bombs.”

Look out.

Peter Egley:  Very pleased to see these ladies get some press. I haven't a clue what's gonna happen. One of my favorite fighters of the '90s, Donovan "Razor" Ruddock, he was looking to simply blow out Lennox Lewis I think. But Lewis got to him first. I'm a Huracan fan but you never know what's gonna happen. Jeri Sitzes I believe is nobody's fool.

Peter Egley:  I'm glad this is on here but what happened to the Hayemaker article? lol

SchoolOfHardKnocks:  Melissa Hernandez is a good fighter, she can win the fight but if she doesn't do what she does best and that's moving and using her natural talents then she could lose to Sitzes.Jeri Sitzes could make this a easy fight if she uses her jab and right hand. If she catches Melissa with that right hand it could be bad news for Hernandez. It will be hard for Sitzes to win though because she has been doing mma and that doesn't help u in boxing it destroys ur boxing abilities

Peter Egley:  Hey Cool School, always interesting to read your insights. Would Jeri's mma really affect her boxing? And what do you think about David Haye? I'm not a boxer so I don't know how good he is but physically kinda makes me think of Holyfield. I've got nothing against the Klitschko bros., I'm just hoping someone can compete with them. Take care, man.

Sick:  I seen this girl Jeri and she can punch. She knows how to box too. That boricua can really box too. it shud be a good one. i like the white girl jeri in this fight. she hits hard.

SchoolOfHardKnocks:  Peter, Yes mma or any other form of martial arts basically takes away from what you do in boxing. It gives you bad technical skills and other things. Boxing is good for the other sports but the other sports are bad boxers. Sitzes is a good fighter and if someone does get knocked out in the fight it would be Hernandez because Sitzes is the bigger puncher. she has a good right hand. Hernandez has charisma and she has the better movement. I would definitely take Sitzes in this fight if she wasn't doing the mma stuff. It's going to go to the scorecards though. The Klitschko's are good fundamental fighters and I like them. I think David Haye is a blown up Cruiserweight. I don't think he can take Vladimir's punch.

Peter Egley:  Hey. It looks like Manny Pacquiao hasn't been mentioned yet on this page.

SchoolOfHardKnocks:  Peter, Melissa beat Jeri Sitzes. I stated before there's no way a person who is doing mma and trying to be a so called boxer can ever beat a person that only trains in boxing. A fighter has to be sharp. But mostly you lose when you are not dedicated and loyal to the sport

Peter Egley:  Hey thanks School. Did you get to see the match? I'm not sure it's gonna happen but what do you think if Melissa meets Layla McCarter again? I think Melissa is incredible accepting matchings with such experienced boxers. I know people probably get sick of it, but the McCarter camp have said that Melissa winning the rematch with McCarter was a fluke. I don't know, Melissa is something of an amateur star perhaps even a phenom, and writer Bernie McCoy thought it was a matter of Melissa fighting her fight in the rematch. Both the first two meetings were internet available at the time, and Melissa really put on a show in the rematch.

SchoolOfHardKnocks:  Welcome, I think Melissa beats Layla if they meet again. Not impressed with Layla. There are good fights out there and she don't participate in them. She can fight Chevelle Hallback which I feel that there's no way she can beat Chevelle. Then there's Ann Saccurato, I think Layla and Jessica Rakozcy are very over rated. Whatever happen to the GREAT Ana Julaton once she got beat, haven't heard a peep out of her. I would like to see Melissa Hernandez and Maureen Shea because I want to see if Maureen is a real fighter. The promoters can make money because both fighters are from New York and it would be like a rivalry fight. Right now Melissa wins by a landslide.

"Floyd may very well be the most talented boxer but that he does not understand that what the fans, who ultimately pay the bills, watch fights for is entertainment. At the moment, he not only ignores that reality but frankly doesn't seem to care. Neither about our wishes and/or our passion for to see great fights. Thus, there is little Go ... and even less Show. I am vaguely interested in the Business of Boxing. Frankly, it is a mess on a good day and worse on it's worst. I prefer reading the Business pages where brilliant men and women develop skills and strategies to create incredible value and wealth (for themselves and others) in ways far more effectively and meaningfully than those who Rule ...some might say Ruin...this beautiful Sport." --FE'ROZ, speaking for a majority of fight fans
