Think Jones might be biting off a bit more than he can chew at 40, TSS U? Or could His Royness catch a career second wind, and carve out a niche in MMA?

Roy Jones Wants Anderson Silva In The Octagon

By Michael Woods

Last year, the top mixed martial artist the world over, Anderson Silva, put the word out that he’d like to test his boxing skill against Roy Jones. Jones was trying to secure a deal to fight Joe Calzaghe, so a Silva vs. Jones MMA vs. boxing crossover clash wasn’t at the top of the future Hall of Famer’s To Do list.

After the November Calzaghe fight, which didn’t go swimmingly for Jones (53-5; he lost a UD to the Welshman), he pondered quitting, but instead decided to soldier on. He’s been interested in a rematch with 49-5 Bernard Hopkins (Jones UD12 win over Hopkins in 1993), but the Jones of 2009 doesn’t jazz Hopkins all that much, as the 44-year-old part-time pugilist only wants to take on meaty challenges, for massive paydays.

Last week, the 40-year-old Jones told his manager McGee Wright that he’d be willing to meet Silva, a 34-year-old Brazilian who can finish foes off in a 101 different ways, in the cage, fighting UFC rules. So Wright reached out to Silva’s manager, Ed Soares. Soares was totally jazzed with the idea; he realized that a Silva/Jones match would draw interest and money, and presumably he knew that even if Jones trained MMA for two years, he would have a hard time with the jiu-jitsu/Muay Thai master Silva.

So Soares reached out to UFC president Dana White. Silva has four fights left on a UFC deal, and White would need to embrace the crossover clash. White told Soares he’d get in contact with Jones people; the ball was firmly in his court.

As of today, the ball stays in White’s court. He told me that Silva will not fight Jones, in any ring or cage or on Mars, as long as Silva is with the UFC.

“We don’t put on freak shows,” White told me. “You don’t have to be educated in MMA to know that Silva vs. Jones would be very one sided.”

Wright, when told off White’s concrete stance, was disappointed. But he holds out hope that perhaps Silva can convince White to change his mind. “I can’t blame Dana, he has done really well with his business,” Wright said.

Jones will probably take on Jeff Lacy in July, as of today. Silva is booked to fight Forrest Griffin in August, so all parties are staying busy. But most would agree that if nothing else, there would be a good bit of interest in a clash between RJJ, who ruled the sweet science in the 90s and early 2000s, and Silva, who has been dismissing challengers without drama recently.

“Roy would want a few months of training,” Wright told me. “I figured Dana would agree to the fight, and then, would we reach terms, that might be another story. I would’ve thought Dana would’ve been happy to do it.”

Soares thinks Jones still has athletic feats to unleash, and would like to see the crossover contest. “Roy’s still a great fighter,” he said. “He’s not quick as he was at one point, but I think he knows his body. He might beat Silva in boxing, Anderson might kill him in MMA, but a fight is a fight. Anything can happen. If a punch lands with four ounce gloves, it could do something. But we are concentrating on Forrest Griffin at UFC 101.”

The point is likely moot, at least for now. But once Silva’s deal gets closer to the end, might he use increased leverage to force White’s hand, and make the crossover happen? It’s not out of the realm of possibility, for sure. To this point, though, White has resisted the temptation to bring aboard fighters who could draw money (Kimbo Slice, exhibit A) but might not cast mixed martial arts in the most favorable light.

Soares has a suggestion that might put the tussle a step closer to reality. “How about a kickboxing match?” Soares said. “That might make it more fair.”

What about it, Dana? Is the window open, even a sliver?

“I don’t think so,” White said. “We saw this fight, Art Jimmerson against Royce Gracie at UFC 1 in 1993.” For the record, fight fans, Gracie choked out Jimmerson, wearing one boxing glove, as the pugilist didn’t throw a single blow in anger, or even slight dismay. With Gracie atop him, he grew frustrated, and quit.

“If you look at the UFC matchmaking, it’s the best fighting the best, everyone gets thrown to the wolves,” White said. “Silva vs. Jones is not what we do.”

ali:  I love Roy Jones but why! come on Roy do not do this just retire it make no sense at all.

1971-Goat:  Why is the Boxer always going into the Octagon. Is there any doubt that Silva would choke out Jones in the cage -- and Jones even at 40 would beat Silva up and play with him in a ring. This proves nothing. Boxers can't fight on their back with the arms bent behind their neck, and MMA fighters can't punch or take a punch, at least from an upper-tier pro. Neither Boxing/MMA is street fighting.

MisterLee:  I'm just shocked that this thought was even entertained. Glad Roy is now sticking to boxing.

Frank:  Roy, Please please please please don't do it. Love, Everybody who wants you to retain your dignity.

Eastar:  As a die hard RJJ fan, I'm embarrassed just reading this article...what the hell is Roy thinking? I'm out.

ali:  Roy none of your fans want to see this and im pretty sure even the fans that don't like you don't want to see this.

in touch :  It appears that certain old prizefighters just continue to think of ways to make another buck. Why can't these guys call it a career and give others a chance instead of trying to suck people into watching some stupid circus. Jones would get killed in this fight in the octagon. It doesn't make sense. He keeps looking for fights against lesser opponents. And now this. what a shame.

Big Ste:  Complete and utter horseshit. Jones would embarass boxing if he did this. He would be caught in a Muy Thai head clinch within 30secs and kneed unconscious by Silva. Anderson Silva is one of the best fighters I have ever seen on the planet. Even as a boxer he could hold his own. But he is a rare breed amongst MMA, he's relaxed and not muscle bound, fast and accurate with feet and hands and in his prime. Roy is none of those anymore. Boxing does not need MMA. I enjoy watching and even doing a bit of training in MMA gyms but Boxers would struggle to avoid the inevitable quick attempted takedowns in MMA and MMA guys would get really hurt over 12 rounds with a pro boxer. Lets keep the Sweet Science and its 150yrs of history as a seperate entity.

Christopher Padilla:  This is an embarassment to boxing.

Jo-Bu:  Roy Jones is an utter and absolute disgrace. It's amazing to think back to him in the mid-late 1990's, and how good he was. He's erased all of that these last few years. His lasting images are of brutal KO's to Tarver, Johnson, and a crushingly one-sided loss to Calzaghe. Not to mention a points loss in the 3rd fight to Tarver where he openly acknowledged that he was there for one purpose only: Survive 12 rounds. He epitomizes the boxer who wrecks his career by going on too long. He's still a Hall of Famer, but NOT first ballot, and he's NOT an all-time great in any way whatsoever.

rudy:  I am ashamed that Roy wants the glory back so much that he's willing to go to MMA, sucks to see him cuz you remember the 90's Roy. The most talented fighter seen at that time. And these MMA morons who think Silva beats Roy musta forgot!!! NO MMA fighter could take a flush shot from a TRUE PRO boxer. He gets floored in 2.
Wednesday May 6, 2009 10:20:48 AM
Perry Russo:  Jones is NOT a Hall of Fame fighter. Sorry. His biggest victory was against James Toney, who had already been exposed as being too light back then by Dave Tiberi. At that point, Toney should have been fighting at cruiserweight or even heavyweight. He ducked every signigicant fighter of his era. Never wanted Hopkins again, after eking out a decision against him in a lull of a fight, back when B-Hop was raw and barely out of the can. Out-dancing John Ruiz means zero. Losing to Tarver tells the tale, because Tarver is truly a bum and quite possibly the most overrated fighter in the last half century. Jones was a media creation and so-so fighter, at best. He hand picked all of his opponents.

Porkupine:  Roy Jones is ALL TALK. He said he wanted Dariusz. He said he wanted Klitschko. He said he wanted Bernard. Glen Johnson is ready to end his career for him if he won't do it himself.
Wednesday May 6, 2009 10:31:48 AM
R.I.G.:  Roy destroys Silva in the ring. Silva beats Roy in the Octogan barring Roy can catch Silva at the end of a good flurry before Silva can get his rythm going or take Roy to the ground.
Wednesday May 6, 2009 01:07:22 PM
MisterLee:  Let's not disgrace Roy's legacy b/c of this bad decision. Pc out!
Wednesday May 6, 2009 02:10:12 PM
ultimoshogun:  Bad idea for Jones... He would get wrecked for sure fighting Silva under MMA rules. RJJ should wait for Silva's contract to be up and meet him in the boxing ring since Silva's the one that called him out in the first place.
Wednesday May 6, 2009 03:23:21 PM
Fe'ROZ :  Say it ain't so, Roy
Wednesday May 6, 2009 08:22:35 PM
Henry:  Roy Jones is a disgrace. He should be fighting no more than Muhammad Ali or Joe Frazier or Jerry Quarry should still be fighting.
Thursday May 7, 2009 06:32:51 AM
andy from CROWcastle two more days of penance to go:  The only thing Brazilian Roy should have a go at, is Tele Novela. Toonoy
Thursday May 7, 2009 09:03:05 AM
punksailor:  i cant believe what im hearing roy jones is an incredible fighter and a true legend of the ring granted he's had some bad losses but it doesnt take away what he accomplished i dont think this is a good idea either but i wouldnt go as far as to say jones is a disgrace. i dont think its right to insult a world class champ like roy jones. you guys should be ashamed of yourselves.
Thursday May 7, 2009 11:58:35 AM
Big Ste:  punksailor they're not saying Roy Jones is a disgrace, they're saying Roy Jones' idea of taking on Silva in a cage is a disgrace to boxing.
Friday May 8, 2009 10:35:57 AM
Kenneth:  Sorry but all of u guys are wrong. Silva would own rjj in a boxing or mma fight. And for the dumbass that said silva would take down rjj u are stupid. Silva doesnt go for takedowns he is a stand up fighter, but he can make jones tap also. I see silva beating rjj by ko or any way he wants boxing is losing the fight against mma and boxing shouldnt hate mma. Boxing was killing boxing. Mma just hurried it up for you guys.

Is It Only Money That Matters?
"Who refuses to take a drug test worth $40 million?" For the American psyche, money is everything. It transcends what is right or what is wrong. For a certain amount of money, I'll do anything. Manny is Filipino, and he cannot fathom that kind of thinking. Is that what capitalism should be? I can't understand why $40 million should dictate your personality. Simply put, Pacquiao has his own dignity and refuses to be manipulated into taking $40M and giving his (butt) to anyone who wants it." ---TSS reader "Tony" informs readers of a possible cultural difference which causes certain peoples to interpret Pacquiao's refusal to cater to Mayweather's testing demands (photo by Chris Cozzone)
