The Rise And Possible Fall Of James Kirkland
By John Nguyen
With what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest boxing events fast approaching Saturday with Pacquiao-Hatton, fight fans are buzzing with anticipation. Such occasions stir excitement for up-and-coming fighters as well. For prospects who long to see their names in the bright lights of Vegas, the next best thing is to find their name on the undercard. A young fighter couldn’t ask for a better platform to use as a showcase for mainstream fans.
One fighter who won’t get such an opportunity, at least not this weekend, is junior middleweight contender, James Kirkland. It was revealed late last week that Kirkland will be scratched from the Pacquiao-Hatton undercard due to an arrest made on April 19. Kirkland, who has a spotted legal history, has since been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a charge which stems from a 2003 armed robbery conviction for which he was still on probation. He was formally arraigned Tuesday.
The 25-year old Kirkland, (25-0, 22 KOs), has emerged within the past year as one of the game’s most celebrated prospects. Kirkland’s exceedingly violent style has made him one of boxing’s most TV-friendly fighters. He wins not by wiliness or craft, but instead with raw, honest brutality that gains the attention of even the passing fan. Kirkland, who headlined an HBO Boxing After Dark card in February, was supposed to use Saturday night’s undercard appearance as a springboard to bigger and better things. Instead, it will be a painful missed opportunity for a young man whose career suddenly is in jeopardy.
Last week, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer issued a statement supporting the man who was supposed to be one of the company’s fastest rising stars.
“We support James and we want him to take care of his issues. We're not going to abandon him because he has a serious problem that he is facing," Schaefer said.
That’s probably one of the only bits of reassuring news that Kirkland has received in recent days. After more than a week in federal custody, Kirkland has certainly had ample time to reflect on the direction his life and career are headed. Given current circumstances, things don’t look good.
The feeling among fight fans and insiders alike is the cynical, knee-jerk reaction one might expect: Kirkland will prove to be another example of talent squandered. His past will dictate his present, forecasting a grim outlook for his future.
One does not need to look very far into the past to see careers derailed by personal demons and the swift, strong hand of the law. Boxing history is littered with tragic stories of promising careers cut short, and a lifetime to lament what could have been.
Take, for instance, the case of Jo-El Scott, the undefeated heavyweight prospect who, in the mid-nineties, appeared destined for an eventual shot at the heavyweight title. At 6’3” and 240 pounds, Scott had the size to compete in the changing landscape of the heavyweight division. Scott also had the amateur pedigree to compete at the elite level of the sport, winning the U.S. Amateurs in 1993, and claiming the bronze at the World Amateur Championships that same year. He began his career with eighteen consecutive knockouts, and even garnered a feature article in the October 1995 issue of Ring Magazine.
Things were coming up daisies for Scott, until poor decisions and a lack of self-control eclipsed his physical gifts. In 1996, Scott was convicted of rape and sentenced to four years in prison. Upon his release, he attempted a comeback that eventually saw him suffer two KO losses. Then, in 2004, Scott was convicted of a brutal rape and murder of an elderly woman in Albany, New York, for which he is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Also consider the well-known case of Tony Ayala, Jr., a fighter with whom Kirkland shares startling similarities in terms of style and circumstance. An undefeated junior middleweight prospect in the early 1980s, Ayala looked like a sure bet for stardom. Ayala destroyed his opponents with a brand of savagery rarely seen. After compiling a record of 22-0 with 19 knockouts, Ayala was on the verge of getting a title shot against WBA champion Davey Moore.
All of Ayala’s promise and meteoric success came to a screeching halt early in 1983, when a nineteen-year old Ayala burglarized the home of a neighbor, and then sexually assaulted her. For these crimes, he served sixteen years in prison, effectively ending his professional career. Upon his release from prison in 1999, Ayala attempted a disappointing comeback, which saw him lose twice by knockout.
Things continued to go south for Ayala, as several run-ins with the law followed, the last in 2004 resulting in a ten-year prison sentence for probation violation, driving without a license, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The stories of Scott and Ayala are illustrative of potential unrealized and lives ruined. Worst of all, their own mistakes left a trail of collateral damage, leaving the lives of numerous others unspeakably damaged. That such brave warriors in the ring could be so cowardly when facing their own fears, failures, and demons speaks to the duality of human nature.
That being said, it is evident James Kirkland’s current situation does differ from the downward spirals of Jo-el Scott and Tony Ayala. The gun charges faced by Kirkland, all would agree, are not nearly as ghastly as the worst acts perpetrated by Scott or Ayala.
And unlike Scott and Ayala, the James Kirkland story still has crucial chapters left to be written which will decide whether the story ends in triumph or bitter disappointment. After all, his current circumstances have yet to be resolved, and Kirkland is entitled to due process. Until all the facts are gathered and Kirkland has had his day in court, conclusions should not be drawn. Time will tell how the James Kirkland saga will play out.
However, it is impossible to look at Kirkland’s current situation without a pessimistic lens. From a boxing perspective, a prison term for James Kirkland would claim one of the sport’s brightest young stars. The old showbiz adage “Always leave them wanting more” rarely translates to boxing, a sport in which fans wish to see every ounce a fighter has to give. The feeling is we’ve only seen a fraction of what Kirkland has to offer in the ring.
But the greatest tragedy that could result from all this is not a fighter whose prime could be spent in a prison cell. Boxing is only a tiny fraction of the bigger picture. Should the worst-case scenario prevail for James Kirkland, the greatest sadness would be the image of a young man who lost himself while on the verge of discovering what he could be. For Kirkland, the best scenario would not be winning a world title, but instead putting his past life behind him and becoming a new man. Boxing was only the vehicle to get him there. All that could be rendered naught by one very costly, very foolish, decision.

I have seen Kirkland fight a couple of times and I have to say I was less than impressed. He seems like just another hoodlum that is trying to use boxing to make money and not giving anything back.
The ONLY boxer I have seen lately that looks like he can save the sport is The Immortal Caesar. He's got the most talent and mot cross over appeal by far.

This is real sad, even tho I'm a critic of Kirkland's style, it sure is fun to watch, and to see if he'll ever get caught. Did any of you guys see the 15 minute documentary/news story on Ann Wolfe his trainer? It was real inspiring about how she grew up family problems and poverty and how boxing changed her life (she was the hardest hitting female boxer her time and succeeded in like 4 different weight classes). she was also talking about how a lot of her boxers disappoint her with their crime and bad habits, and the training methods she used with kirkland were interesting... like driving a truck around with a heavy bag attached on top in the middle of a field while he has to hit and move with it. I feel bad more for Anne Wolfe than kirkland. He let her down, and his fans. But then again, whos' to say , didn't Puff Daddy and Michael Vick to name a few all have carried handguns before in public places? Pc out!

I think it was another sexual assault type crime Roast. Anyway, the Kirkland case is more a situation of total thoughtlessness, than being evil. Sad stuff, as the guy could have been an exciting dude to watch. Let's hope he hasn't thrown it all away, and that he gets councelling and guidance, rather than punishment. There's no excuse for stupidity. Except being stupid, of course. Toonoy

Nice piece! I just hope that the stiff-butt Texan judge cut the crap and let the kid back in the game. This judge doesn't seem to realize that he is using taxpayers' money to hold JK. Let the dude out to make a living and fine him, mfJC! Didn't Texas learn anything with Muhammad Ali. Yup! That's right! Ali was charged with dodging the draft by a wacko judge in Texas. Free James Kirkland and sent the Texas Rangers to get the real criminals -- the drug cartel. Holla!

Gonna be good. Late may gonna be fantastic, ward beating pantera back to his habitat, then machida. Machida is way too good of a defensive fighter to get hit. I think his timing nullfies power and strength. first asian champ in UFC right? Even tho he's practically brazillian, but gots to throw love out to Sakuraba! Pc out! :)...

Well written article. I live in Austin, Kirkland's hometown. Here's how it all went down as I understand it. James went to a gun show and purchased a gun at a table where there was an undercover cop lurking about. He either recognized James and knew he was on probation or profiled him as someone who, out of the masses there, shouldn't own a gun. So the dick followed James in his car and he is pulled over with his wife on a routine (BS) traffic stop. The vehicle is searched and James is arrested. Career on hold. Can't it be argued that with his wife in the vehicle he was not necessarily the one in possession? I don't know. I cannot account for James previous robbery charge. He may not even been given a fair chance in court. My own experience with the law and James ordeal makes clear for me that the majority of police are on patrol to simply make arrests. This is not a good thing. Tact or judgment is most often never employed. This creates a significant form of income for the city, police and actors employed in the legal arena. Once arrestedand in the system, you will pay heavily in personal freedom, fines, and the rights of citizenship regardless of whether you are guilty or not. I slapped a known drug dealer who insulted my pregnant wife and baited me into a confrontation. The scum called the police and showed them the red handprint left by my natural response. I was arrested in front of my sobbing, pregnant wife and lucky they even let me put my shoes on before hauling me off to jail. I was charged on assault with injury. At my bond hearing, I was chastised by the judge and had my freedom set at $5,000. After several months, legal fees and court time, I was left with an assault charge on my record and out $2,500. All for standing up for me and my wife like a man. James was likely seeking personal defense for his home and vehicles. How many young, black, successful men are targeted for robbery or carjacking? I had the pleasure of shaking hands with James and chatting with his trainer, Ann. He appeared to be mature and surrounded by a good team that were looking out for him. But they can't be there 24/7. Each man has the right and need to be able to protect their person, family and property. There used to be common respect and honor among men. Now, we live in a country consumed by greed and run by peevish, weak men orchestrating the demise of those they are envious and scared of.

Such a waste of talent. Talking of UFC, Machida/Evans = the most eagerly awaited UFC fight for me. Can't wait for this fight. I hope Machida does the business on Evans even though I'm a fan of Evans too. Machida will becomes the Anderson Silva of the light-heavyweight division, no one will touch him.

Thanks for the inside news, Master Snake. Hopefully the legal system will act with some sense on this occasion. YUVIE, shhh, you've uttered the unutterable (UFC). Mister Lee and myself were trying to be subtle. Personally I hope Silva steps it up, and moves to light heavy, and tries to become the Anderson Silva of the light heavies himself. Silva against either Evans or Machida would be the real proof of the pudding as to how untouchable he really is. I think Machida will edge this one by KO. After tomorrow, this is the one I can't wait for. Or was it Dawson Tarver 2 ? (drug test me now). Toonoy

What part of the system that some people don't understand..HE WAS ON PROBATION!! So why would he be ignorant enough and go and purchase a gun? If he wanted a gun that bad why didn't he have a friend go with his wife to show her what type of gun he wanted and let her purchase it. He doesn't even suppose to be around any kind of fire arm. He was in prison for armed robbery. Come on man get real! Stop blaming the system. Plus they say he went back and got more ammunition. What is your excuse when they pulled Ann Wolfe and the guy over and she was yelling at the police and she was riding in a stolen car. Something is wrong with that picture. Say what you want but idiots have to start holding themselves accountable. Him being black is not why they pulled him over.

As I said earlier, there is no excuse for stupidity, except being stupid. But banging Kirkland away again is not going to solve his problems. The man needs guidance and counselling, not a pointless custodial sentence. I appreciate he was on probation, he ain't the brightest cookie in the tin, but let's not hastily throw another young life down the pan, without at least trying to turn him around. Toonoy

The direction Kirkland's career WAS going, he oughta be able to afford a bodyguard, and a good alarm system. If the place is as ruthless as you say Master Snake, Kirkland oughta just move then, rather than be under such close scrutiny. I feel bad for Ann Wolfe still. I feel she just wants the best out of everybody Oh well. Angulo vs. Willaims anybody? El Perro vs. The Punisher, will the dog bite its owner? :)

Haha... Andy from Newcastle, I guess we said the "U" word, and then yuvie is like HOW'S THE MMA GUYS? WHAT I MEAN IS DANA WHITE'S UFC THAT HE BOUGHT IN THE LATE 90'S AND CONVERTED INTO A MARKETABLE FRANCHISE AND A LEGITIMATE SPORT. Haha... so yeah anderson silva moving up would be a jewel, b/c he would not just be up against lyoto machida, he'd have mauircio shogun rua (my old favorite fighter, and finally produces a decent showing agst liddelll), quinton jackson, rashad evans etc... my hope is after the tekken movie, cung le makes some sort of deal with strikeforce to fight some of the talents of UFC like anderson silva. I'm pretty upset that shamrock lost to the bum nick diaz, does strikeforce still have any selling power? No one's gonna go out and shell money to see nick diaz carry his own headline. despite what pple think, i feel cung le has a good chance of beating silva, but he better do it quick, the guys like 37 man! see ya! oh yeah, i water boyed for 1995 World Wushu Championships in Baltimore, MD, and I got to see Cung Le get his arse whooped by some russians and others in Sanda ( he was an amateur and not "undefeated" at the time). When he was tired he would do his scissor kick, miss , the opponent would just stare at him, and the ref would let him get up. One russian guy pushed a chinese fighter off the ropeless platform, and stepped on his foot on the way down. broke his ankle in half! okay see ya! tss rules!

SOHK...Amen Brother. I felt like I was taking crazy pills listening to everyone make excuses for "poor Kirkland". As you said, he's on probation for ARMED robbery, so he has given up his right to ever own a gun. He was already given a second chance by not being in prison now for his CONVICTION OF ARMED ROBBERY, and guess what, he screwed up that second chance.

Damn !!! I could say Kirkland shouldn't have been strapped but I don't know what made him feel like he needs security (pistol) . People start hating on you when you start to make something out of yourself and upgrade your quality of life . No telling if he got a death threat or felt as though someone was plotting to rob him or what . One things for certain , two things for sure ,I rather be judged by twelve than carried by six . Those who lived it know what I'm talking about . I got four kids , three siblings , a mother who loves me , and e few freinds . If I'm dead I'm gone , if I'm locked up for protecting myself at least they can talk to me or come see me . I think the law that says a convicted felon can't carry a firearm should be adjusted . People do change , I have . I think after 7 years the ban should be lifted , but that's a another discussion all in itself . I really like this guy Kirkland after I watched the 3 seven minute episodes about him and his camp on demand . He needs to hire armed gaurds . It's hard to trust another man with your life though . I hope JK , Anna Wolf and Pops come out all right . Dueces

Guy...Amen and I second what you said as well. RealTalk, it seems as though you are still trying to make an excuse for this man. I definitely believe in giving someone a 2nd chance. What if Kirkland had robbed your mother would you be saying this now. I thought your name was real talk..lol So lets keep it real. This is why society in a whole is so messed up. We are not holding any of these fools accountable. I grew up in a bad environment as well and seen a lot of crazy stuff. This man had a golden opportunity to make a better life for himself and his family. Why do we rob? because we have no money. He wasn't making small money. That's kind of a negative way to think when you say I would rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6. He wasn't protecting himself. Myself, I totally disagree with that. That's only because I respect people and real there's nothing macho about going to prison. When I see guys always going to prison It makes me think that they don't like women. I never want to be cooped up with a bunch of guys anywhere.

what's up with my comment being taken down ? I had a lot of vaid points in there . All I'm going to say is remember Shawn Taylor . Caught a charge and was told not to have firearms . A couple suckas(I spelled it that way on purpose) broke into his house while he was sleep with his wife and daughter . They cut the phone cord ,kicked in his bedroom door and shot him in the femur artery and killed him . Now his wife is a widow , and his daughter doesn't have a father . That's why I said I rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 . At least I'd be alive and my Mother can come see me . If he robbed my MOM's I would hope it was because he was hungry and had no other option . Whatever man I did a lot of things when I was younger that I shouldn't have . I've changed , but if my life is in danger I'm going to take steps to insure my survival or self preservation . Police don't care about nothing but collecting that check around here . When they shoot the police just ride past until 15- 20 minutes later then come when someones laid out . They sit out there talking while the victim is looong gone . My man Khalil got killed why the police sat in his car and did nada . The dude walked off , then ran back up and shot him in the head . The only one who can protect me better than me is God . Kirkland should hire armed guards . One of my worst fears is someone standing over top of me shooting me or a pitbull biting my jewels . I've had many nightmares about it and daydreams . Maybe James Kirkland does too . I used to be a criminal , now I'm a family man an a business man . Been straight for 7 years . I've got death threats from haters who are mad because I'm making something out of my life and they are stuck on stupid . Somebody bussed the windows on my truck last week . I've got kids to raise so if I feel it's getting to hot , then you fill in the blank . Chinese parable : to acheive peace you must prepare for war . I always pray for peace . Peace and Blessings

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
