Carl Froch, Come On Down, Jermain Taylor Says

By David A. Avila

Prizefighters need to have a bit of cockiness or confidence, whatever you want to call it, to step in between the ropes knowing that in the other corner a guy with gloves wants to take you apart.

Carl Froch and Jermain Taylor have loads of it.

Undefeated Froch (24-0, 19 KOs), the WBC super middleweight titleholder, intends to prove that he’s cocksure of beating Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs) on Saturday at the Foxwood Resort Casino in Connecticut. The title fight will be televised on Showtime.

The first time I saw Froch fight live was back in 2005 at the Avalon Theater near Hollywood and Vine. The British middleweight put a beating on poor Henry Porras, a Costa Rican called up by the promoter to test the Brit.

It was no test, it was just a pop quiz.

After eight rounds of pounding and pounding, Porras could take no more from the Englishman who hammered away like a blacksmith. It wasn’t a feat of artistry, or a one-punch destruction a la Tommy Hearns, but a blue-collar effort of consistent bludgeoning.

That night in 2005 Froch showed little discomfort being away from home fighting in the historic heart of celluloid magic and celebrity. The only difference he noticed were the accents of the reporters that April night.

Froch recently told reporters that anywhere inside the ring he is comfortable.

“For me it’s not a big deal,” said Froch (24-0, 19 KOs) during a telephone conference call. “I’ve fought in America before.”

Four years have passed but Froch still has that same confidence.

Maybe it comes from beating fighters like France’s Jean Pascal, an undefeated fighter when they met in December. Or maybe it’s mugging the rugged likes of Robin Reid and Brian Magee to capitulation?

“Of course he’s going to be confident, he don’t know how to lose yet,” said Taylor, 30, whose only losses were to current middleweight world champion Kelly Pavlik. “I’m going to have to teach him.”

The usually amiable Taylor, who managed to hand Bernard Hopkins his first defeat in 12 years and  repeated the feat  several months later, has little compassion for the Brit crossing the Atlantic Ocean. He’s almost rude about the confrontation.

“I’m just going to go in there and box the hell out of him,” said Taylor, who seems more anxious than usual to regain faith from boxing fans. “So he’s a strong fighter, so what?”

Though Taylor only has two losses, it seems the boxing world has relegated him to has-been status.

Taylor, a has-been?

The Arkansas Razorback fumes when reporters even consider that Froch is capable of handing a third defeat.

“I think he’s too slow,” Taylor says about Froch’s speed.

Froch has so much confidence that despite Taylor’s refusal to go to England, he simply shrugged at the option of coming to America where fans of Sanjaya are more prominent than fans of Froch.

“Initially when I found out Jermain Taylor didn’t want to come to England and had absolutely no intention of coming to England, I take that as he didn’t fancy a fight,” said Froch about the negotiations. “He would have probably earned more money.”

So here comes Froch ready to show America what blue-collar hardness truly means. He’s never been beaten, never been humbled and never doubted that he’s the best in the world. But he’s not the favorite.

“I am surprised,” said Froch who hails from Nottingham. “Because in my whole career I’ve always been a massive favorite.”

Taylor sees Froch as a means to reload his own career.

“It’s all about being a champion. All these other fights don’t mean nothing,” Taylor said. “He needs to come over here and establish himself.”

ali :  I hope Jt wins then I would like to see him fight Kelsser that would be a great fight. In about 2 years I think 168 is going to be the best division in boxing. With fighers like Ward, Jacobs, the Dirrell brothers, Pavlik, Kelsser, Taylor and mabe Williams thats alot of young great talent. But this is boxing so you never know but I hope they all live up to the hype and end up puting on great fights fighting each other.

Radam G aka Humble PRG:  JT has never convinced me that he is that good. I don't know the cat, who he's fighting. But if this dude is anything like the "Ghost" Pavlik, he is going to kayo JT. All the haters, fakers, posers, busters and lack of money makers call me a nut for picking Pavlik by knockout over JT in the first bout. But, it all good! They don't know Jack or Jill. And they couldn't even find a moehill! Holla!

Yuvie:  Well, most people think it's a typical case of the unknown brit coming over to fight in the US but I think this time, Froch has a chance. If I had to bet, I'd probably bet on Froch, it's a risky bet but I believe he has the tools to beat Taylor. Firstly, I think Taylor is under-estimating Froch big time. I think he sees Froch as another Lockett or Jennings type. I'm also not convinced that Taylor has regained his confidence if this goes deep, people seem to have forgotten the Pavlik fights. Taylor's ripe for the picking. Personally, I think Froch is faster than Pavlik with the same level of power as Pavlik and overall, Froch is better than Pavlik. Therefore, I think Froch might be shocked by Taylor's power, like Pavlik in their first fight but I think Froch will have the mental strength to carry on. He'll eventually get to Taylor in the later rounds and I think it'll be lights out for Taylor. I'm not sure if Taylor has the heart to actually fight a guy with the same level power as he has for 12 rounds. How often does he fade in the latter rounds. If Taylor don't take Froch out early, then he ain't winning, he might even quit on his stool.

#1 Pacfan "KO's Hatton in 9":  Carl Froch has more of a chance at winning than most may think. I never believed in Taylor's power but he has good boxing skills. If his power has not improved i don't see him winning this one.

Yuvie:  I guess Taylor's power at super middleweight is still an unknown. I'm pretty sure he was probably holding back against Lacy but I'd be very surprised if he stopped Froch. If this was in the UK, I'd say 100% Froch wins this. In the US, Froch 60%, Taylor 40%.

Isaiah:  Tough fight to call. Jermain Taylor showed such promise before becoming Middleweight champ, but then it seems like he forgot how to punch! I can understand not being able to KO Bernard Hopkins or Winky Wright, but struggling so hard with the undersized Kassim Ouma and Cory Spinks is crazy. Those two guys were perfect fighters for the bigger champ to make a statement with! There's no exscuse with the beatdown he got from Kelly Pavlik twice. Simply one guy he can't beat. ( I know the second fight was close and no, I don't count Taylor's win against Pavlik in the olympics for anyone who wants to point that out...) I don't know anything about Carl Froch, but he seems to know how to punch a bit. Should be interesting, but I see Taylor regaining some old form and winning a close desicion.

brownsugar:  too tough to call,.. Froch may be better than he seems,.. I'll be watching with interest,.. if Taylor can avoid getting rocked too many times he'll win,..if not then you know the outcome,.. too many intangibles,.. but I'm rooting for the USA in this one.

MisterLee "The Caveman":  I'm rooting JT barely on this one. I think he's just hype by HBO to make a new champion in the new generation of middleweight champs and to sell tickets and PPV slots. I guess they tried to make him into a new and young middleweight Oscar De La Hoya, and all that failed when Pavlik beat the crap out of him. Also Ali, Arthur abraham and even Pavlik will eventually move up to suppermiddleweight. Even tho Ward is gonna retire Miranda like he was mayorga, I like how miranda fights. He shown a lot of heart and courage and punching power in his losses to abraham and pavlik. He was no slouch even agst pavlik! I thought he fought a way more competitive fight than jermaine taylor, and i woudl even have miranda as the favorite over taylor, as pavlik the power puncher walked thru taylor, so would miranda. However, ward is too skilled and strong to be hit by a one dimensional fighter. It'll be a quick night, 6 rounds baby. Pc out! :) Andre Ward 2009!

Big Si UK:  I feel sorry for Froch that no-one in the UK has picked up the TV rights to show it live. First defence, fighting away from home against a named opponent, and he can't get on the box!! Must be why he is always bitter about Calzaghe, who spent most of his career fighting bums at home and still getting the coverage. Good luck to you, Carl. Win or lose at least you are taking the chance

Lefty:  I watched Froch box several times and I am very disappointed in myself for wasting valuable time and money. Carla Frochy's mechanics are awful. JT is a skillful fighter, who has been on the biggest stage. Taylor has a nice looking resume, which includes 2 Pavlik fights,B-Hop twice, Spinks, Ouma, Lacy, William Joppy and "Winky", Who were all world champs. "the Cobra's" resume consists of : Spoopy, Pee-Wee Herman, His Grandma,Great grandma, Micky Mouse and Micheal Jackson. Jermaine will use his jab consistently through out this contest and "Bad Intentions" will control "the Corbra" AKA "the Grass Snake" by peppering his head and land a few over hand rights and that should take care of this 'tomato can". It's know secret, we true boxing fans know exactly why this fight was reduced to Showtime, but that's ok, cause Taylor will have a marque name when he fights Kessler. HBO PPV

pete steward:  Great Power, solid chin, heart and Supremely Confident. Carl has the style and personality that boxing is starving for. After he's crushed Taylor, a Star will be born. Froch is coming to America NOW with hungry lions waiting for him. Not like OLE SLAPPY Calzaghe who waited for R.J & B-HOP to get old enough so he had chance in HELL to beat them. Both 40 Plus Year olds & Future Hall of Famers DROPPED SLAPPY like a BAG of DIRT. He never beat B-HOP and he could not put Old Bones Jones away for the 10 count. Stay RETIRED SLAPPY! Carl "THE ROCK" FROCH Could be the peoples champion. Will know for sure after April 25 but I like what I see so far…… Froch ROCKS!

Theboyb901:  People keep mentioning these Pavlik fights. Realize-those are the only two fights Taylor lost. And when he was champion, decision or not, he fought good solid fighters for about 1 1/2 straight. And for Froch....he leaves himself open way more than Taylor and he's extremely slow. He should have power fighting against opponents who aren't in the top 15? Froch DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO KEEP HIS HANDS UP! Predicting a Froch KO is foolery. Pascal is not a world class fighter. And we will see the true Froch Saturday. Taylor KO 6.

John Dimech:  Hat's off to taylor, he fought well, but it's a 12 round contest and if you ko the other man you win. Froch laid a pasting on him in that last round, and won fair and square. Very astute pre-fight analysis by Yuvie (above), and I agree with whomever on this thread said that this is a very rich division at the moment. Should be some exciting fights coming up.
