Angelo Dundee Talks HBO Thrilla Doc, MargaCheato, Pacquaio
By Raymond Markarian
“But Ali always sucked it up…. He always did.” –Angelo Dundee
Timing is the most important thing for a trainer. They only get one minute to give instructions in between rounds. Yet by the time the fighter sits on his stool, takes a sip of water, and the cut man attempts to heal his wounds, who knows how much info resonates in the mind over the course of fewer than sixty frantic seconds?
Therefore Angelo Dundee sent short but concise messages to the combatants that he worked with. “Sit down, relax, I will take care of this,” Dundee told a young Cassius Clay after the fourth round of the first Liston fight. Clay was blinded by a burning substance that his opponent, Sonny Liston, allegedly had on his gloves.
Dundee spoke to TSS of Ali’s coming out party on that fateful evening in 1964 with an honest sincerity. Did Liston attempt to blind Clay in that fight? No one truly knows for sure. However, Liston at the time had a reputation of doing whatever it took to win, so one can only wonder.
“Muhammad felt like there was some dirty work going on. He came to the corner shouting at me to cut his gloves off. He wanted to stop the fight to tell everyone that Liston had something in his gloves,” Dundee said. “You see, Liston was so powerful in the ring and people would talk about him putting something in the gloves all of the time. I mean, they would talk about it openly. I checked Liston’s gloves before the fight. There was nothing wrong with them. But I could tell there was something wrong when he (Ali) came to the corner. So I put my pinkie in his eye. Then I put it in my eye and it burnt like hell. My eyes started burning!”
The bond between Angelo Dundee and Ali has been exhaustively examined. But TSS U never really gets tired of hearing about the interaction between The Greatest and his tutor.
Dundee was screaming in Ali’s ear during the third battle between the two titans, Ali and Frazier dubbed the Thrilla in Manila. The fight was the focus of an HBO documentary that debuted last Saturday. The Socrates of boxing trainers has a different perspective of what transpired in the waning moments of the epic bout than some of the analysts on the program.
“Let me tell you, the thing that they got wrong, Muhammad never said to cut the gloves off. I was there. They must have been thinking about the first Liston fight. When Muhammad got back to the corner after the 14th round, I knew we had Joe. I said ‘Loosen up kid, this is the last round, let’s get him.’ If you see, when we get in the corner, (between the 14th and 15th round) I am pumping my fist as I talk. I am really juiced, because it was amazing the way these two guys were fighting. And Muhammad has always sucked it up.”
So Muhammad never wanted to stop, I asked him.
“No, that’s baloney,” Dundee said. “Joe didn’t want to stop. Do you know what I mean? They are two warriors. No, and Muhammad never said anything about cutting the gloves off. That is nuts. That is not true. That is not real.”
Dundee thought there were more untruths in the documentary. Although he enjoyed the show, Dundee felt that those who had the strongest opinions on the program were nowhere to be seen in the Phillipines on fight night.
“Well, I am not a critic, they did the show the way they wanted to do it. But I saw a lot of faces on that show that I have never seen before. And they were the critical ones. You know, I didn’t see these people at the event. But they were the ones talking the most. It was dead wrong when they said that Muhammad wanted to cut the gloves off. And the other thing about saying that he collapsed after the fight is silly. The truth is, Muhammad laid down because those guys were jumping on him. So he just sat down and took it easy.”
Ali’s victory over a courageous Frazier in that Thrilla in Manila was the stuff fairy tales are made of. But to hear Dundee say it, it was not Hollywood movie dramatic. The HBO documentary depicted an image of Ali gasping for air, nearly fainting inside of the ring after the brutal fight against Joe Frazier. But Dundee, the closest man to Ali in proximity, saw it differently.
“That was baloney,” Dundee said. “And it has long been a misconception after the fight. Listen, he walked back to the corner by himself. He sat down by himself. He got up by himself. But you know, that is all said and done. I am so grateful for what HBO is doing for boxing. I enjoy everything that they do.”
Most of our conversation focused on the HBO documentary. During a critical point in the show, Dr. Freddie Pacheco stated that everyone in Ali’s camp, the Muslims, and Angelo Dundee included, urged Ali to continue fighting, except Pacheco himself. I asked Dundee about Pacheco’s comments but he refused to throw stones at his former colleague. Instead, Dundee gave his own idea about why Ali continued his boxing career after the third Frazier fight.
“I never played God with any fighter, and told him what to do with his life. Muhammad did with his life what he wanted to do. So did Joe Frazier. I think a fighter has the God-given right to call his own shots, especially with the type of life that they lead. I hinted it to him a number of times, but I am not in the position to tell a man what to do with his life. I will give you an example. Early in his career, Muhammad and I were watching a kid (young boxer) skipping rope.
“I told Muhammad ‘See that kid over there?’ He said ‘yeah.’ I said, ‘He’s stuttering.’ Now, near the end of Muhammad’s career, we were sitting in a limousine on the way to a press conference. During the middle of our conversation, I said ‘You know you are starting to stutter?’ He said, ‘What do you mean?’ The thing is the kid did what he wanted to do with his life. No one forced him to do it. That is who he is, Muhammad Ali.”
Dundee and I took a breath. We exchanged thoughts about why Muhammad Ali is still the greatest of all time. “Nobody could duplicate what this kid has done for boxing,” Dundee said calmly. “He just gave it a new level, a new time. People did not realize how much fun we were having until he stopped fighting.”
Frazier’s well documented resentment towards Ali is no secret. Dundee acknowledges Frazier’s frustration but sees little need for it. Dundee thinks it is time to move on for the Philly slugger.
“I think Muhammad is fond of Joe Frazier. Everything that we ever did, we were selling. If Joe took it the wrong way, there is nothing we could do about it. We just tried to sell tickets. We did not mean any harm to anybody. Someone came to Ali with the gorilla doll and he started taunting with the gorilla. You know that kind of stuff. But overall, Muhammad had a lot of respect for Joe Frazier. He was a great fighter.”
The history between Dundee and Ali holds truths only the two men know. It has been nearly thirty years since Angelo Dundee laced Muhammad Ali’s gloves for the last time. Yet, the two boxing icons hold a strong friendship.
“I see Muhammad every chance that I get. I just need an excuse. He asked me to talk at his foundation in Zaire. I got to know the guy that did the movie “When We Were Kings.” He was a real nice man. He and I both talked about our experience in Zaire. That foundation is something else you know. It is a six story building used strictly for teaching kids. It is not a boxing establishment. I assure you. It is a learning institution.”
Margarito Ban
After soaking us in Ali vs. Frazier tutelage, Dundee gave his thoughts on the Antonio Margarito scandal.
“Plaster of Paris, that’s brutal. I am glad they caught it. We don’t need that kind of stuff,” Dundee said about the substances that were detected in Antonio Margarito’s glove before his fight against Shane Mosley. “We had that Billy Collins situation, where they took the padding out of the glove. But this is just horrible. I think this act deserves a ban.”
Dundee continued by saying, “And if you really think about it, putting something that hard in the glove can break his hand very easily. Think about it. Bone on bone. It just did not make sense to do something like that. It takes the sport out of it. The best man will win, you know.”
Ricky Hatton’s Perfect Weapon
Dundee thinks Hatton has a great chance to dethrone the current Pound for Pound king on May 2nd. “If ever there is a fighter that could beat Manny Pacquiao it is Ricky Hatton,” Dundee said.
Why is that, I inquired?
“Aggressiveness, Hatton will take it to him,” Dundee said. “It takes the awkwardness out of the southpaw if you take it to him. And Hatton has the best punch to beat a southpaw, the left hook. Hatton said it himself, he is bigger, and stronger. Pacquiao is quicker. But I give Hatton a great shot to win. It is because of the style. You take it to the southpaw. I handled six southpaws, that is how I know. I handled the best southpaw in the world, Michael Nunn. But he got hit with that left hook from James Toney. You see, that is the punch. So they will make it a great fight. And I give Ricky a great shot to win.”
On May 8th, the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey is hosting a roast in celebration of Angelo Dundee’s 88th birthday. HAPPY B-DAY Ange!

What Ali did to Joe Frrazier during the turbuent times of the sixties and seventies is inexcusable. Not only did he degrade Joe, but anyone that looked like him, dark skinned blacks. Frazier came from nothing and made something, more so than Ali. But everybody has loved Ali and forgotten all about Joe Frazier. They needed each other and their fights didn't need any hype; they sold themselves..

OMG Angelo has surely gotten into his age; hahahaha!!!!! anyway maybe he doesn't want to see an ASIAN beat the hell out of a white GUY that's why he pick hatton to win. I thought he was a great trainer but after the ODLH fight and the comparison he just said I dont know maybe his just to old that he already forgot what the difference between a great boxer and an ordinary champion.
Or maybe he just cant accept that his fighter w/c he trained suddenly beaten by Pacquiao.

Angelo Dundee was in the camp of de la hoya during the pacquiao fight. He was the 2nd coach if Im not mistaken. If they claim him to be a very good coach, how come they let oscar loose his weight that much weeks before the fight. I would have guessed, after all the years of training great athletes, he have should known by then what oscar should have done to prepare him to fight pacman. After the fight, now they say, oscar was weak during the fight, they say he was not conditioned, all these excuses sum up to one thing.. Oscar's camp was a mess, and Angelo Dundee was big part of that camp.
He had a great run with The Greatest, but now that I see dundee talk, I think he's just no longer credible enough when it comes to predicting fights...

Mr. Dundee was one of those who gave advises to dela Hoya who has good left hook but what happened to dela Hoya? Mr. Dundee was also saying that dela Hoya has all the tools to beat the PacMan. I guess Nacho Beristain gave the best advise to dela Hoya to quit at round 8: "It's useless to continue. He's just too quick for you.." to paraphrase. Well let's see what will happen after May 2 bout.

Regarding the the comment of Mr. Dundee that Hatton had the the style to counter the southpaw style of Pacman is very sensible. His statement is based in his experience. It is true, based on my observation, Manny is quite awkward when pressed by an aggresive fighter.
I just want to hear comments from Mr. Roach regarding on Mr. Dundee's comments.

no way ricky will win on this one. pacquiao will dominate hatton, he may be the bigger guy (at 140) but he never had the experience of fighting an awkward southpaw with power on both hands and the fact that pacquiao is a lot quicker and the stamina to go full 12 rounds. Hatton admittedly said that he will retire after two more fights. why is he telling retirement already? is it because he knows he doesn't have it anymore? hatton showed some signs when he fought collazo and wasn't that impressive when he fought malignaggi...i see another pacquiao dominance at 140 and another shot at history! goodluck for both warriors!

The documentary of which we were promised a copy by the producers who came to Manila to interview former First Lady Imelda Marcos and myself, since I was the liaison officer assigned to Muhammad Ali, hasn't been received by us up to now. Poor reflection on the producers for sure.
We will take a look at it once we are able to acquire a copy possibly from our friends in HBO and make our comments. But we have no doubt that Angelo Dundee - a wonderful man - is telling it like it is. From all reports the producers used people who were never on the scene or had access to Ali to paint a negative picture of the greatest fighter of all-time and one of the finest human beings you could ever meet.
Shame on them.

I respect Dundee's opinion, but i dont get why is he's so anti-PACMAN? Didnt the Filipinos treat you very well while your in Manila in "Thrilla in Manila"? or just hated that your favorite boy Oscar just got a whipping from a little Filipino. I just dont get it. Almost all Boxing experts routing for PAC, except you. Then why did Oscar defeated while his favorite weapon is also the left hook? And he's more bigger and stronger than Hatton. Oscar never did compalin about his weight, never did, he was in shape, best.. He was fast that night, but PAC is much more faster, way more! Thats why ODLH looks slow. Why do People just say PAC has an awsome night than Oscar has a bad night.. P4P King nothing more, nothing less..

im sure most of you have seen hatton's fight with lazcano. hav u ever wondered even the average speed of lazcano cud slow hatton down? hatton was even hurt on some rounds. compare lazcano's style, speed, and power with that of pacquiao, poles apart yet hatton was battered. even with hatton's new hall of shamer poet coach mayweather sr.'s guidance, i bet i wouldnt expect that much of changes from him. what mayweather's doing trying to change old hatton's style could only spell easy defeat for him. improve but do not change. hatton may fire him for that and maybe regret of firing billy graham. Come May 2, Pacquiao won't be on top anymore. He is overrated, a product of the alphabet titles and network hype machine. The last credible fight he had was his first win over Barrera. And even in that one, Barrera was ripe for picking what with all the mileage he had. Pacquiao's last two over Morales were entertaining, nothing more, they were not worth half the credibility Pacquiao was bestowed. Morales was shot. So was Barrera in the 2nd fight. Marquez schooled him twice. If Marquez's style was as entertaining and if he was half as bankable as Pacquiao, the outcome would have been different. And don't mention his win over the geriatric Dela Hoya. Three fourths of the contenders from 137 to 147 could have flatted Oscar much quicker that night. Pacnuts are in for a shock on May 2. I can hardly wait.

Wonderful article! Like it said, we never get tired of listening to Angelo Dundee. I got to know Angelo a little over the Ali Years (who didn't? He always made time for everyone) and he was the nicest person you'd ever want to meet. I think this little story illustrates what kind of guy he is: the morning after the first Spinks fight I ran into Angelo and his wife at the Las Vegas Airport. We both were distraught over the fight the night before and started talking strategy for the rematch. We talked and talked until it was time to board his plane, but when his wife finally pulled him into the plane, I started to say goodbye. He goes, "No, no, no, no, I want to continue our conversation." So, he brings me into the plane with him and his wife so we can continue talking strategy for the rematch. He tells the stewardess that the plane cannot take off with me on it and she assures him that I will have time to get off before the close the hatch. So, we talk for another five minutes or so until I finally really have to leave. The point to my story is this - there was nothing I could tell Angelo Dundee about boxing that he didn't know a thousand times more than I did, yet he talked to me with the same respect as if I was Sugar Ray Robinson himself. What a great guy!

Dundee can only say right now that Ricky can beat Manny, because his guy Dela Hoya was beaten to pulp by Pacquiao. No disrespect to Dundee, but I think his comment is too emotional. Maybe he just couldn't accept the fact that Dela Hoya was beaten by PACMAN.

The Truth:
|
Angelo Dundee like his student Muhammad Ali however great they maybe are both people of the past now.. His training insights are way too primitive now as boxing has gone a long way than when he was still in it. He has been everything EXCEPT BEING RIGHT about his assessment about pacquiao vs delahoya and oscar's decision of bringing him inside his camp was his biggest mistake. Dundee picking on Hatton over Pacquiao is all about the old man's PRIDE, he can't accept that him joining delahoya for that fight didn't make any difference so he is looking for some kind of redemption in the form of a Pacquiao loss... Sadly Mister Dundee you must Accept your destiny the way Ali did. You were once the greatest trainer but this is a different era now.. Your shine has been long gone and therefore you should just continue to enjoy the sport you love NOT as a GURU but now reduced to just a plain old BOXING fan like the rest of us.. your continued FALSE insights about the present day boxing matches just repeatedly TAINTS your LEGACY it's doing you no good and just shows your DWINDLING mental capacity due to your AGE.. so just SIT BACK, RELAX AND MOST OF ALL BE QUIET AND LEAVE THE PRESENT DAY GURU'S DO THE ANALYSIS.

Angelo Dundee is a legend in boxing, but let's face it, the man is damn near 90 years old. I think his age has finally caught up with his infinite boxing knowledge. I think the old man is getting senile on us boxing fans, and plus, dont forget who Ricky "The HOLDMAN" Hatton is working for, good old OSCAR DE LA QUITTER, the last man to give little old angee his last paycheck. I think he is just sucking up to the golden loser hoping for another job so he can pay for his medical bills, i think it's time for dundee to start looking for a retirement home.

With all due respect to Angelo Dundee, im not about to bet on what a 90 year old man has to say, remember what he predicted about "The Dream Match" . He said the pacman was going to take a lickin, but it turned out to be the total opposite. Pay attention boxing fans because i am getting a premonition, that's right , i am making a prediction, ricky "the holdman" hatton will get knocked out somewhere in between the sixth and tenth round. And here is how it is going to happen, "the holdman" is going to lunge in with his usual predictable left hook to the body, but i feel that before it gets a chance to the land, the Pacman is going to throw a short, quick RIGHT hook right on hatton's chin which will drop the redcoat on his over-rated trunks. So there it is, remember where you read this, and remember who wrote it, because come sunday morning april 3rd, you will be in shock because what you read today will come to be that saturday night. A number of these posts that are badmouthing Angelo Dundee fail to recognize the FACT that he did develop, train and/or manage two of the greatest fighters of all time, and he has the right to voice an opinion on his beliefs, his opinion is not based on race, or on his having worked with other fighters, but on years of climbing the stairs to a ring corner and to a fighter waiting for his wisdom, have some respect for his accomplishments, and stop disrespecting someone that has forgotten more than most of these guys posting on this site will ever know.

dundee was hired for public relations for the oscar fight because nacho doesnt speak english if you watched the interview i believe with jim lampley it was clear his oppinion of the fight was influenced by the fact that oscar was his boss. i do believe ricky has a good shot a beating pacquio. to me it is more of a pickum fight than the way manny is shown to be the favorite now. the one thing that worries me as even though people keep mentioning hattons improvents he still does not move his head and thats what got him knock out against mayweather, the thing about that is manny is not a big as mayweather.

It is OK to disagree with Angelo Dundee's predictions, training methods, or whatever, but completely unnecessary to disrespect him. He has more knowledge and talent regarding the sport of boxing than everyone who has commented here combined. Show a little class and respect.
BTW, Dundee isn't predicting a Hatton victory, he is only saying he has a chance. If he didn't, then why would any of us pay to see it?

Dundee is a very knowledgeable man. He picked Oscar dela Hoya not knowing that Oscar will be severely dehydrated come fight night.
However, I' m very surprised this time that he is picking Hatton. A skillful boxer will beat a skillful slugger anytime. A skillful boxer like Ali proved this time and time again. Thus, I'm picking PacMan IF the fight goes past 5 rounds. The first 3 to 5 rounds with Hatton are the danger zones for Manny.

Well said Jim S, it's ok to disagree with Dundee but the man doesn't deserve the insults. However, the only chance Hatton has in this fight is if he tries to mug Pacman the same way when he fought Kostya Tszyu. If he tries to match Pacman's speed and explosive power it will be a short night for him.

Is it me or is the 24/7 series getting me all hyped up for the fight. What i like about that is they show more training than anything else. Like some other ones' they show more of their personal life than training footage. Hatton looks fast there but can he maintain that speed when he rehydrates back to 150-160? I don't think so i believe that's too much weight gain from training to 140. He will lose his speed while Manny at 147 will still have the speed. SPEED KILLS. payce.

Im not claiming to know more than a hall of fame trainer, im simply trying to say that the man is old, and age does not always benefit the brain. Again, i am not claiming to know more about boxing than dundee does, but mark my words, Ricky "the holdman" Hatton will get caught with a short right hook when he lunges in with that left hook to the body and his glass jaw will not recover. It is hard for me to say it but before Oscar there was the Díaz fight and neither of them represented danger. Ricky is dangerous and I truly believe Floyd Sr. has corrected the defense aspect. Ricky by split decision. Pacquiao will be knockdown during the fight.

If you
can all remember in all PACQUIAO FIGHTS BELOW 135POUNDS,Manny wasn't happy before everyfights why ?Because he was not that strong. He was not eating much.starve himself while on training, and yet he managed to beat his opponents.knock them out/down one by one. Then he moved up to 135lbs.you see how fast he was beating Diaz.then with DelaHoya fight Manny was even smiling while approaching the ring why? because he felt good.not starved he felt stronger. At 140 lbs. is Manny's Ideal weight He's much much stronger in this weight ,He have developed his muscles and speed.in one of the recent articles it stated that some guys saw Manny in training and they can't even see his hands because of the speed. And you might have read it too he injured his sparring partners one by one in which we boxing fans never heard it before. Some said that Hatton is stronger in this weight,I think that is the opposite. You will see and MARK MY WORD this is LT.RED, HATTON WILL BE KNOCK DOWN on THE 1ST ROUNDTHEN KNOCK OUT ON THE LATE SECOND ROUND. Dundees prediction is wrong again!!! Everybody will have a shock of a lifetime. You will see!!

Full disclosure, I almost always back Manny and Always wait for Hatton to get stopped. The two are incomparable. Hatton's style is one of the most annoying i can recall in a celebrated fighter. His mugging may be effective..........in fact it had been earlier and still is on occasion against naturally smaller opponents......but it is a half step the other side of MMA; not the sweet science. I'm sorry that Kostya Tzuyu decided to quit. I think he got frustrated by the style (not quite like Duran and Hagler after fighting Leonard but not altogether different) and was at the end of his career so he said WTF. I think he lost both of his first two Welterweight fights and loved when Floyd slipped him and clocked him with a left hook into the turnbuckle. It made me laugh like Zab's chicken-walk. All that said, I think his chances against a maturing but still growing Manny are better than some would like to believe. Not because of skills. Because of his size and style. Manny, on the other hand, has become a truly great star not simply by fighting in some of the most spectacular battles and winning but because he has become a much more skilled boxer. That admiration alone would have me watching and pulling for him. Hatton does not stay in shape between fights and consequently has not improved. But Radam and #1 Pacfan, I still think Hatton has a shot. pc

I think the doctor missed the difference between heavyweight and smaller fighters. While heavyweights should depend on power and strategy, smaller fighters depend on speed, stamina then strategy. That is why JMM hardly find Pacquiao, he is full of strategy, while Pacman hardly found to solve his atrtegy. Other traits follows only the three.

too many people are saying Dundee's opinion of Pac vs Hatton is racially motivated,..How can that be when Dundee has worked with them all??. (some of the most physically talented boxers to ever lace pair) Like Carmin Basilo, Sugar Ramos,. Sugar Ray Leonard, and Muhammed Ali?? Woking with the most highly controversial boxer in American History during the Politically turbulent 60's and 70's must haved been a challenge in itself... So I don't think Dundee is picking Hatton because they share the same pigmentation (more likely his old skool boxing logic),... And when have Dundee's predictions every been better than 50%,.. he was always good at picking talent,.. but Dundee sucks at calling fights,.. always has,.. he picks underdogs and frequently picks "Both" fighters in some instances,.. because he's that careful about hurting the other guys feelings,... Personally I wish neither of the guys had to lose,.. both Hatton and Pacman have the type of personnas' that draw people to the sport,.. but someones going down on May 2nd,.. at least the loser will be well compensated for his effort. ....Personally I think Hatton is an extremely dangerous fight for Manny,.. but Manny seems to progress and grow after every fight,.. I give Manny the edge by the slimmest of margins and wouldn't be surprised to see an upset and a rematch....

@Fe'roz....I would only comment on your post truly because you come with facts and that's respectable. I speak for myself so i'm not saying Hatton has no shot at winning. Once you step in that ring no matter how much an underdog you come in you will always have a chance at winning. If i didn't think Hatton had a shot i would be saying first round knockout or a shutout decision. But it only takes one shot and the tables can turn dramatically and that's what i love about this sport. It will come down to gameplan execution, ability to take a punch, and the one who can avoid the punches. Manny's defense will be key for him while Hatton's conditioning will be a factor. Who's chin will hold up? All these questions will be answered come May 2nd and the waiting is too much torture. But good luck to both cause i know these two will not disappoint us.

@ #1Pacfan, The only fight that bothers/worries me....and should many other Pacfans....is the Castillo fight. That left hook to the body. Now I am aware of Castillo's weight problems. His level of commitment is nowhere near what it was at Castillo One; in fact, I don't know which Castillo is going to show up in his fights anymore. But when a man who earned a living with his left hook ....and took the monster shots from Corrales and others....goes down on a liver punch, I have to pay attention. I know, maybe he was the Castillo who cut weight too late....or maybe it was a different "worn and torn' version of the fighter who beat PBF and battled Diego....but he did go down on one fast left hook. I still think Manny's speed will trump Hatton's BS.... but Manny needs to be where that punch isn't.

@Fe'roz, good point on the Castillo fight but i am not too worried about that. That Castillo went through all the wars he could handle and Hatton just faced a gasless fighter in my opinion. It was all but end of the road for him after the he faced Mayweather. That punch Hatton landed on Castillo was unfortunate for Luis, Hatton was trying to land a punch to ribs but was fortunate to land on the liver. As Castillo was trying to avoid the shot he anle himself where he was open for the liver shot. Anyone can go down on a liver punch and i agree Manny must avoid those punches. But what i wonder the most is who will come in as the aggressor because Hatton has mentioned that he is willing to box Manny. I think it will be Hook vs Hook, a lunging left hook from Hatton and a step back right hook(Manila Ice) from Pac. Whoever lands the first hook will be tested on the chin. Who's chin will hold up i don't know. We'll find out May 2nd.

Excellent peek inside the camps. It's size and strength vs speed and skill. Speed does kill. Maybe it will be a test of wills. I think whoever is able to impose his will on the other man will win. No way will Hatton will be able to box backing up. If Ricky can't come forward and do his thing, He's gonna get smoked. I feel the two styles are going to mesh and we are going to get a great fight.

Let's all be clear that this fight will be about more than Pride; pride of the fighters and their loyalists. The stakes here are huge. This is a true Prize fight. the financial ooportunities are boundless. Lucrative purses are all but assured the wnner...and the loser....if the fight is as close as it is exciting. But for the winner, fuggetaboutit. I can't remember the stakes this high. Hatton must win or lose by a small margin to be able to claim with any respectibity that he is capable of competing against either Marquez (down) and/or PBF (up). He may get those fights regardless given his power at the gate but a bad loss will make him think mostly about picking a fight that he can win to seal his diminished legacy around. MP, well, the sky is the limit. Everyone wants him. Not only does he have the true PFP title, it would remain his to defend. BTW, Hatton has no right to claim anything more that the Jr.Welterweight king (certainly not the P4P title) even if he wins. He is/was a bust at any other weight. He's a one weight fighter. Lest we forget, Manny started at 106!!! 106!!! this is a true phenom, win or lose. Now unless I hear something in training camp to make me change my position, I am looking for Manny to stop Hatton on Cuts and Points. Late in the fight. pc

@ Fe'Roz... This is what makes me wonder about Pacquiao, the start at 106. When does he reach his limit? No fighter can just rise up and up and up without it catching up to him. I know that Pacman has been naturaly getting heavier as his career has progressed, but it has to end at some point. This is why I think Hatton will win. This will be the biggest, strongest, most aggresive fighter that he has faced. I know that Hatton was out boxed and knocked out buy Floyd but, Floyd is a saftey first type boxer. He caught Hatton while moving away. Manny does'nt fight like that. He is always right there, like a warrior, trying to fight and do damage. Hatton is gonna hit him. I dont know if he can take it.

oh dundee... hav u ever tried visiting pacquiao camp? or ever seen him training and knocking his sparmates to the canvass? because if u haven't this might hav caused your bad predictions. you should visit pacquiao and watch how he prepares for each fight he has and maybe you will agree with us that you made a mistake betting on the golden boy last december. maybe, just maybe, f uv gone to both of the fighters camp, u wouldnt be that bias on predictions. may 2 is still 2 weeks away, why dont u go to hatton's as well as pacquiao's camp and make predictions from there. maybe try training pacquiao for a littlle while and see what he's got. after all, SEEING is BELIEVING right?

You Pacquaio fans are really starting to be a pain in the ass.
The man gave his own opinion on the upcoming fight. This is a man who knows vastly more about boxing than all of you put together, he is allowed his opinion and deserves your respect.
A left hook is a great punch against a southpaw.
Hatton has a great left hook and he is aggressive in a similar way to Mrales in the Pacquaio-Morales first fight.
So Angelo says that Hatton has a great chance to beat Manny.
If you don't want to hear a dissenting opinion then go to Pacquaio forums and discuss how he is the greatest that ever lived and would easily have beat up Tyson.

If only some of you dumbarses actually had any respect. What exactly is your legacy, what have you done for this great sport? Dundee was NOT just a lucky white guy that happened to coach Ali. He has decades of success with dozens of champions prior and after Ai.
Most of these above comments are disrespectful and igorant to pugilism. In respect of Pac v Hatton read the article again. He didn't say that Hatton would win. He said that it would be a competitive fight as "Hatton has a great shot at winning."
Dundee is a legend and an intregral part of boxing history, unlike half of the racist morons on here, trying to take some personal success for a boxer they've never met. Don't believe the hype.

@the Roast, that is something I think does and should worry all Pacfans. He is not a big man. It is as much a matter of when... not if...he hits his weight/growth limit. Add to that the wear and tear from the battles that he has been in and it is a matter of time before he meets his match. I just hope it's not this time. Roach's confidence tells me that he is seeing speed that he believes is unstoppable. We'll see what happens when these two meet each others power.

First of all.....Manny did not win against JMM (not once) & all who have seen their fights can either believe or refuse to see the TRUTH!!! JMM was straight up robbed & Manny got lucky...twice! Let's have one more battle between JMM & MP so we can all see what a TRUE WARRIOR looks like. (Baby Bull Juan Diaz, JCC jr. & Valero would all wipe the floor clean with Manny's blood & that is a FACT!) Come on now....WE all saw what JMM did to Baby Bull...now didn't we? Or did you have your Manny glasses on that evening & just failed to see it....again? LMAO!
2nd: Erik Morales kicked Pookies ass as well. So what if Manny came back to win the 2nd fight. Don't mean nothing when you lost the first one. Everyone knows Roach Coach had to re-asses his gameplan for that one. Ok....I'll be nice & let's call it a draw.
With that said, most of ya'll better get off the MannyWagon before you lose ALL your $$$ & start lookin like a bunch of FOOLS!
Laugh now, so what! You'll be crying by the end of their fight on May2nd cuz HITMAN is gonna bring it & he's gonna bust em up like never before.
We'll see what happens come fight night & to be honest - I wish I was at your house to see the look on your sorry faces! :-(
Oh yeah, one more comment b4 I go - lay off of Dundee (old or not, his ass knows more about fighters & the Hurt biz than all of you think you know & has acheived well above his or anyone else's expectations in life)! As for ODLH well let's just put it this way....Manny isn't a 10 time WORLD CHAMPION in 6 different weight classes now is he? & the last time I checked ODLH is Manny's idol....not the other way around.
Best of luck to both fighters come May2nd cuz it's ON!! However Ricky won't be needing any, but Manny's glass jaw will!

Yo #1 Pacfan, I see... so not every manny fan can be a hardcore boxing fan too! I got it! :) haha... u the man! Some of you guys are right: Ricky Hatton IS the stronger fighter... physically stronger, if they hold and wrestle Ricky might body slam manny or throw him around, BUT, as far as Punching Power, they may be about equals.. manny's speed and natural punching power maybe be similar or equal to ricky's, whereas ricky's body punches might be a little more telling. I just think Manny's footwork and hands up defense will make all the difference in the fight. Ricky won' catch him! Your hands can't hit what your eyes can't see, float like a buttafly' sting like Radam G! :) Holla! :)

@Fe'Roz, spot on in the post before your last. Winner of this bout would prolly take on May and the loser would take Marquez. I really don't want to see Hatton and May go at it again but then again what if Hatton has really improved. Imagine that, May Sr. against his brother Roger who trains May Jr. what story that would be. This is to your last post, speed can be stopped depends on the fighter who can time and cut off the ring. I believe Floyd is Pacquiao's match, they have reached their peak in skills and speed. Floyd does have a slight advantage in speed and boxing abilities. If Pac does not get passed Hatton, there's no point of making the "Fight of the Century" happen. If Pacquiao wants his legacy to be amongst the greatest fighters of all time he needs to get the PBF.

Pacfan! that docu was like poetry! i thought the champions forever, the heavyweights was just a ali fest. I saw no new footage, and i got bored after 15 mins. so when i saw latin legends i was unsure, but i was hooked. I wish they spend more time on julio caesar chavez, but i guess it was made earlier in the 90's, and they focused more on older generation latin fighters. Btw- how can kid Gavilan be so dangerous if he had 130 fights and only 30 Ko's Pc! :)

Kid Gavilan only had 30 ko's because almost every fighter those days was fighting for survival and were fighting differing styles many times a year. KO's on today's records are a joke, so many poor fighters around with no grit and desire. Gavilan wasn't a perfect fighter but if he fought today he's be a multiple (alphabet) weightc hampion with a stunning ko record. Its just a sign of the times. (and hyperbole of today's alleged "greats" when they have a handful of fights and maybe 5 or 6 tough fightsthroughout their career. And some of the rubbish posts on here are a disgrace to Dundee. What have these posters offered in the way of a legacy? What have they donefor this great sport? Dundee had world class boxers before Ali and after. Disagree with his prediction by all means but at least show some respect for a man who has contributed more in his lifetime to Boxing that you fickle mouthpieces ever will.

OMG people, we are all going to get old. Remember someone will be talking about you one day. So what if Dundee says Hatton will beat Pacquaio, or that Pacquaio will beat Hatton. It is only an opinion or a guess. Both guys have a chance otherwise we wouldn't be so interested in it. It just seems like everyone here is running scared. He didn't put down the people of the Philippines, so relax. Just stick with your guy and root for and give your arguments. It is just like on other boards, thank goodness not this one, if someone gives a contrary opinion, they start making racist comments, name-calling, and attacking the person on a personal level. Give your opinion, be respectful, and we'll see what happens on May 2.

It's fair enough for all these keyboard warriors to slag off an all-time great trainer but what's wrong with him giving Hatton a great chance against Manny? So do I.
The truth is Hatton may or may not win its pick'em to me but there is no reason to think it's a walkover - this isn't David Diaz or a weight-drained ODLH.!
I hope all of you in the list above will be willing to apologise to Mr Dundee if Hatton wins, because it may well happen! If it's even competitive you should apologise because many of you are suggesting Hatton has NO CHANCE, which is absolute rubbish.

THAT'S DUNDEE'S OWN POINT OF VIEW BUT HATTON & MAYWEATHER AREN'T GONNA RISK RUNNING PAC OVER FOR THEY KNOW THE RISK OF GETTING A FLAT TIRE. They know how sharp are the nails ahead and would rather take precaution. However this precaution is gonna slow down Ricky but he got no choice. Whether he slows down or carelessly force his way in, he pays the price. Manny is one of a kind. HE DEFIES THE NATURE OF PHYSICS as Jordan, Tiger Woods and Kobe do. When Manny attacks great trainers and big size, or small size opponents get lost in limbo.

Hey hey, let's not be cultural -centric... in some parts of the may 2 is 2/5/09, other parts is 5/2/09... i assume more ppe in the world do it 2/5 right? Even tho not where i live. I know that much. But who am i to judge and stuff, Cher and "do you Believe in love" was a hit in most parts of the world except the US, europe... what were you thinking? :) Nah man, we all boxing fans, and we excited. Even tho I"m still rooting for a 5th round Manny tko, i have this strange premonition ricky will have a massive knockdown of manny early before he rallies back and wins. That'll be dramatic! We'll see. Teh way i see it,RIckys imrpoved defense MIGHT save him some wear and tear during the fight and might get him close enough to tear some at manny. However, 24/7's little backstep, and follow up with cross hook definitely looks dangerous, b/c when he stuns hatton, then he can follow up with some combinations and get outta. there. oh well. see ya! :) Andre Ward 2009! :)...

MisterLee The Caveman, waiting for his own Legendary Nights...:

Angelo is best p4p trainer in my opinion, or one of them. Does anyone know of Willie Pastrono? I have a friend who followed him in the old days who says that the guy could not be hit. That he would just lean on the ropes and slide around as opponents missed, and he liked to outpoint pple without hurting them gravely. I heard he was a stable mate of Ali, and maybe taught ali the rope a dope? He says that willie is fat and in NYC selling sandwiches at a store. Yep, so Angelo, freddie roach, I would put both mayweathers up there, maybe more so Floyd, b/c I'm yet to see other fighters Roger has developed, Nazim "The Darn Genie" Richardson, emmanuel steward.... how come teddy atlas has not had more world champions under his reign? He strikes me as down to earth and very knowledgeable, but i can only think of michael moorer (don't lean on the counter!). Also, it strikes me that Emmanuel steward is the trainer of boxers who win world titles that have greatness just fall short on their lap. What do i mean? Tommy Hearns (vs. a Leonard or Hagler legacy), Jermaine Taylor, Kermit Cintron... I see him as a technician but not as a coach that inspires me. am i wrong here? Pc out!

Willie Pastrano has been dead for some time now but I never heard of him selling sandwiches in NY or anywhere else. He was known as Willie The Wisp and trained in the same Miami Beach gym as a young Cassius Clay with Angelo Dundee as trainer for both fighters. Willie was incredibly elusive and fast.He had no punch but he had everything else. Pastrano originally campaigned as a heavyweight and was a top ten contender but then moved down to light heavyweight and won a close decision over the great Harold Johnson. At that time Angelo Dundee also trained Luis Rodriguez and Ralph Dupas who were also world champions. Angelo was in Eddie Machen's corner for the Doug Jones fight which Eddie won. Later on Dundee had Jimmy Ellis under his wing. Finally if Angelo is wrong more than once on picking winners in contemporary fights well he has earned the right to be wrong. No one is perfect.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
