RIP, Artie Curry
By Ron Borges
The world is a lesser, sadder place today. It has been ever since Artie Curry drew his last breath, alone in his home in Brooklyn three days ago.
Artie Curry was the kind of guy the world knows little about but should mourn loudly for he was about all of the things that are right in this world. He had every reason to complain about the cards he was dealt as a young boy but he didn’t. He had every excuse to fail but he didn’t. He had every reason to be bitter and angry but he wasn’t. Artie Curry was who and what I’d like to be if I ever fully grow up.
Curry died Wednesday of causes not yet known. The belief is it was a heart attack. It would be a cruel joke for someone with so big a heart to pass away because it failed him, because it seldom failed anyone else.
Born to a alcoholic father he met only once and a mother he once told the writer Tom Hauser was “just a lady I saw from time to time,’’ Artie Curry bounced from one foster home to another from the age of four to 16. It was then that a jazz singer named Edward Curry and his wife, Lise, adopted him and a new world of love, respect and a comforting hand to guide him opened up.
Artie responded and within a few years was working in the mailroom at Time-Life and greeting everyone he met with a smile. That smile and his competence and way with people would eventually lead him to then HBO Sports president Seth Abraham and a job in which he would become a boxing legend.
First hired as a production assistant, Artie’s kindness to everyone he met and his unique understanding of boxers and their needs ultimately led him to a job as Director of Boxing Talent Relations at HBO. In other words, he looked out for fighters in their most tense days, the days before they would step into their underwear and step under the hot television lights HBO would train on them.
In a world filled with backstabbers, double dealers, thieves, liars and brave men, Artie Curry made no enemies. He made only friends for himself and friends for HBO. Friends among some of the greatest boxers of his time, like Roy Jones, Jr. and Arturo Gatti, and among some of the biggest business men in the sport, like Abraham, HBO sports president Ross Greenburg and former vice-president for programming Lou DiBella, who is now a promoter but who remained close to Curry all his life.
“If ever there was a person who was a perfect fit for his job, it was Artie,” Greenburg said after learning of his passing. “He loved boxers, and they loved him back. Artie was in many ways our personal ambassador to the boxing community, and he will be sorely missed by all of the people that he touched.
“He will be missed by all of his friends and colleagues at HBO Sports, who looked forward to his friendly greeting every day. This is a big loss for everybody who knew Artie. I am grateful that for two decades he represented HBO Sports and distinguished himself every day.”
I am grateful too for all the times we clasped hands at ringside after that Barry White voice said, “What’s up, bro?’’ Artie really didn’t have to ask because no one knew more about what was up in boxing than he did. His life was the world but his business was boxers and boxing and he knew what time it was.
He understood a fighter’s whims and needs. He understood their moodiness and their madness. He saw them not simply as fighters but as men like him, human beings who could be hurt but would fight on.
They might be just fighters to the world but to him they were friends. Everyone he met seemed to be. If there is someone in this world who disliked Artie Curry, it says more about them than it does about him. That is not to say he was an angel because no man is an angel but where ever he is today, Artie Curry is among the angels.
Seven weeks after turning 49, still recovering from a knee replacement that had left him limping for some time yet still smiling, Artie Curry was taken away from his friends, which is to say from everyone who knew him. It is our loss and boxing’s loss. It is the trainer Jimmy Glenn’s loss because Artie used to sit on a stool at “Jimmy’s Corner,’’ a saloon not too far from the Garden in Manhattan, and hold court sometimes. When he was there, everybody was laughing.
Just six weeks ago, his sister passed away from cancer. Maybe he didn’t want her to go on her last trip alone. It would have been just like him.
Artie was a guy who visited both locker rooms before a fight just to check in and see what you needed. A lot of people do. He was also a guy who visited both locker rooms after a fight just to check things out and see what you needed. Not many people do.
That was Artie Curry, always in your corner, win or lose.

Ron, here is a copy of an email I sent to someone describing Artie Curry to someone who never met Artie:
Peter,
Peter you may have read about the recent death of Artie Curry of HBO Boxing. Artie was 49 when he passed away. I've known Artie for the last 20 years. We met at the old Mcburney Y on 23rd St. We were friends for the past 15 years.
Peter, Google up the Tom Hauser story on Artie Curry. What an atrocious beginning Artie Curry had in life. It is a miracle he overcame it. And yet he overcame it to become a wonderful beautiful human being. Peter. please read the story.
Peter, I could go for a few years without seeing Artie, and then when i saw him it's like we only spoke a few days earlier. By the time I moved to Las Vegas I had not seen Artie in about 4 years. I call him up in Las Vegas ask him how is he doing and, "oh by the way Artie do you have any extra tickets for the fight." Answer, "how many do you need Ray."
Peter, forget the ringside tickets to the big fights. Artie Curry never disappointed me in my life. Peter, sometimes my standards for friendship/character are set to high and it not reasonable to expect any human being to live up to them. Artie Curry always exceeded even my unreasonable standards for friendship/character. Peter, Artie Curry was one of the great ones.
God bless
Ray

I met Artie Curry when I came to HBO boxing as a production assistant in the mid 90's. Artie always offered me great advice. He was a example of what I wanted to be like in the entertainment business. Hard working, kind, and friendly to everyone. I would ask his advice on my future plans and he gave me his card and said to call him if I needed any help with anything. Artie Curry thank you for all your help and advice. And now that i know your whole life story I am even more appreciative to have met you.

I am a huge fan of the art of boxing and throughout the years I have seen many things happen in this sport. When Jim, Larry, and Emmanuel paid tribute to Mr. Curry they showed the world the love and respect they have for this man. More so, they showed the world that living life is important. No matter what your position or job title is, your attitude and approach to life affects everyone around you. We all have a responsibility to live the best we can. I never met Artie Curry, but I shed tears with the HBO commentators as I felt their genuine pain. Life can be as simple or complicated as we let it be. We CAN choose to simply treat each other good and most of all "Just be real". My thoughts and prayers are with the all the people who feel the hurt right now. God bless Mr. Arthur Curry's soul! Amen...

The amount of heart felt homage that was given to Mr. Curry on saturday night is a testiment to not only the boxing world but hbo and Mr. Curry. Artie was the best neighbor one can never have. Always smiling, always kind, walking me to the store at night for me not to walk alone. For the four years I lived in Brooklyn we were friends. He was ending his notes with the word "peace" which made me smile for a tough looking guy involved in the boxing world. In our building full of artists everybody loved him. 2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
