Carving Turkey, The Darchinyan Way
By Rick Folstad
The big talker with the big ego is predicting he'll win the big fight.
He’s telling everyone how he’s going to “demolish, destroy and knock out” the guy he’s scheduled to fight Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
The big talker is not angry or crazy. He isn’t shouting or swearing and he seldom raises his voice. In fact, he sounds like a guy who is calmly telling you the best way to carve a turkey.
Some of what the big talker says is a little hard to understand, but that’s because he didn’t grow up in Dallas, Chicago or on the tough streets of Brooklyn. Now living in Sydney, Australia, he’s from Armenia, which is a long way from a southern drawl. He speaks English with kind of an Armenian twang. You have to listen closely.
But you don’t have to understand every word to know what he‘s saying. It‘s pretty basic stuff, dealing a lot with knockouts, pain and destroying things. Heavy punches.
Along with the big talk and the big ego, he’s a southpaw with a pretty big punch. And that’s what could decide this fight, the big punch and who lands it first. Or last.
“Knockouts are my style,” said Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs) on a recent conference call promoting his super-flyweight championship fight on SHOWTIME with Mexico
’s Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs). “I believe I can knock out anyone, and Saturday night, you will see a big knockout. No one can stay with me for 12 rounds. I punch too strong. If I catch him, it’s over.“
Darchinyan knows a thing or two about catching things. A few years ago, he caught a Nonito Donaire left hook and it was over. It’s his only loss.
“Everyone keeps bringing up Donaire, but who is Donaire?“ said Darchinyan, who apparently suffered some serious memory loss from the beating. “I want to fight him again in the future and I want to destroy him.“
That’s fine, but like Pinocchio’s nose, Darchinyan’s potential hit list is long, impressive and still growing. Maybe he can get a rematch with Donaire before he fights Manny Pacquiao (“I want to move up and fight Pacquiao, but I will take my time“) or right after he faces super-bantamweight contender Israel Vazquez (“he gave me great sparring but I‘m confident I will defeat him if we fight“). He’s also got his eye on WBO super-flyweight champ Fernando Montiel.
It’s smart to plan your future, to look ahead, but Darchinyan still has to deal with Arce on Saturday night, a guy he says he dislikes.
“I am going to slow him down and punish him every round,“ Darchinyan said. “I’m going to play20with him like a cat plays with a mouse and show him how dumb he is. I want to thank his management because they don’t want him any more. They just want to write him off after the loss.“
Asked if he might be underestimating Arce a little, Darchinyan said he never underestimates an opponent. He just never shows them any respect.
“I believe any opponent I fight, I will dominate and destroy,” he said. “I believe I will knock (Arce) out, but I won’t knock him out in one round. That would be too easy for him. I am going to demolish him, destroy him and knock him out. He’s going to remember me all his life.”
He’s probably right. You can be pretty sure Darchinyan is going to remember Donaire all his life.
“Arce is a good puncher,” Darchinyan said. “He’s had good knockouts. But I am going to play him like a baby.”
Darchinyan doesn’t do a lot of tiptoeing around. He stomps. And say what you want about the guy, you’d want him covering your back in a street fight.
And if he mouths off a little, maybe he’s earned the right to put a little swagger in his walk. In the biggest win of his career, he upset reigning super-flyweight champion Cristian Mijares, stopping him in nine rounds this past November to win the WBA and WBC belts.
Not many figured Darchinyan had a chance against Mijares, who has already beaten Arce. In a prediction poll, 25 out of 31 members of the media picked Mijares to win. The six who picked Darchinyan included Darius Ortiz of ESPN.com., who also picked the round.
“When I fought Mijares, I told him what I was going to do to him,” Darchinyan said. “I told him I was going to break him down, that I was going to smash him and destroy him and knock him out. And I did.”
A man of his word.
“Watch carefully from the first round,” Darchinyan said of his fight with Arce. “I don’t want you to miss any of my artwork and my punches.“
Should be a big night.

This fight is going to end early by KO, Darchinyan will knock Arce out cold in the 5th round. Arce only comes forward as does Vic also, the difference is that Vic has more power in his punches. If Arce changes his style and becomes patient he has a chance other than that he will lose if he becomes agg.

Vic is the most exciting boxer today. He is very good for the sport that is loosing fans to MMA and UFC. In real life he is actually a very nice guy. They all need to sell tickets, so does Vic.
His style and his confidance makes everything so entertaining to watch. GO VIC BEST OF LUCK. Please destroy the Mexican cawboy

Well, it's another one of those fights again. Fighter a beat Fighter b, but fighter a lost to fighter c, so that means fighter c wins against fighter b. You know, I'm starting to think Arce has an off-chance. It all depends. Darchinyan showed skills in beating Mijares but who knows how he'll react with Arce. This is gonna be a great brawl while it lasts but yeah, Darch has the bigger punch. Unless Arce catches him with something lucky, I don't see him winning the fight. It'll be a test of wills and Darch will come out the victor in the middle rounds. With that said, I think Donaire will always be Darchinyan's boogeyman. People forget that Donaire took some decent shots as well. I reckon Darch would last longer next time but the counter-punching skills of Donaire will crumble the bull later on in the fight. Still one of my favorite moments in boxing, Donaire taking out Darchinyan in one of the best stoppages (or most enjoyable) I've ever seen. The post-interview afterwards was hilarious.

The squeamish, those with heart defects, and pregnant women, should look away. Seriously, I think I'm looking forward to the weigh in almost as much as the fight. Evil Vic is starting to make Mayorga seem like a quiet retiring type. This prefight hype is living up to expectations, let's hope once the lollipops, stetsons, and Dark Lord cloak entrances are over, we get five or six rounds of SHOCK AND AWE. It truly doesn't get any better than this, Toonoy

i think darchinyan is over rated, he is been KO by a filipino boxer "nonito donaire" in 2007, and he ran away and move up in weight so that it will not a rematch, man he talked big. and then later fight a filipino boxer again "Z Gorres" and it was a controversial draw because that bout could have been a win by the filipino box er "Z Gorres"....

FightFanWest sounds like a bitter, old man. Steroids? Base your arguments on facts, buddy. You act as if Pac has been knocked out 6 times, he's only been knocked out twice (and also a third time when he goes in the ring with Hatton), so Darchinyan is not far off being level with him. Darchinyan is definately exciting, I guess in some ways it's a breath of fresh air to have a fighter talking such smack before the fight. I'm not sure how much further up the weights he can go, but if Pac can do it then I guess he can too.

Yuvie, why do I have to sound bitter when I don't agree with you. I do have facts buddy..so what are you really talking about? Manny has been knocked out 2 to many times. I don't think he can go up that high but I do think he might be able to fight as far as 122 max. I love boxing and its what I do so why am I bitter.

Yuvie..My name is not RadamG. I'm not going to make accusations about someone that I know nothing about. I know he's on steroids, like I said before that I knew Shane, Toney, Briggs, Vargas and Roy Jones was on it. I personally know the person that was giving it to him. You have to be a flat out idiot if you don't think Manny is on it. Why do you think I'm bitter because I know the truth. If you think 40 is old then I'm old then...lol I told you before, Roach knows it also, just like he knew Toney was.

If both fighters are good, the end results of a bout will always be with the fighter who is mentally prepared to win. These two are fabulous P4P fighters but I will give JArce the advantage here. Vic talks too much to cover up his fear of losing while JArce talks less to show his confidence that he can unmask the real VD. JArce is more calculating and smartly tactical while VD is more on aggression, might and intimidation. VD prefers his knuckles to do the talking while JArce thinks to isolate, tie, slap and hammer. At 29 JArce can only be hammered to UD/SD and but VD can be KayOd. JArce's brain, strength and skill will bring the anaerobic VD to dreamland. JArce by KO inside 10 rounds.

This guy has always rubbed me the wrong way, almost like Madam G. I watched him and his smug little expression in the interview after being KTFO by Donaire and he was just an arrogant little pug. Hope Arce knocks him out in Mercer v Morrison fashion.

This one is hard to predict because Arce is a hittable opponent and Vic got power. If Arce can have more speed like Nonito it's obvious but sometimes power overwhelms boxer that's why this fight is very interesting. Arce is much of a boxer than Vic so I’ll go for Arce I just wish his chin won’t give in like Margo.

I'm surprised how many people think Arce is gonna win this. I just think at this stage, Darchinyan is on another level to Arce. I agree with Hakim in some ways. You gotta appreciate what Darchinyan brings to the table but even after the fight he still acts like a jerk. To me, he was a real bully during the whole pre-donaire/darch fight and even after the fight, I think Donaire was still a little uncomfortable, you could see how awkward it was for him being interviewed with Darchinyan next to him actin like that.

I think it is not correct to refer Donair knock out of Darchi as a representative event showing how Darchi's level. To prove this, just see a bout Nonito Donaire vs. Kahren Harutyunyan (decision) on youtube.
To those who are doubtful on armenian fighters' quality, please check this armenian guy from MMA - Gegard Mousasi (original Movsesian). Hopefully Vic is made out of the same stuff!
Still I am agree - too much boasting words from Vic although that might be due to business reasons.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
