TSS Universe, could this be the fight where Mosley gets old, and can't pull it out late?

Tony, Shane Only Thinking About Each Other

By Ralph Gonzalez

They tried to get it out of him but Shane Mosley wouldn’t bite. When pressed about the steroids issue that hangs over him, Mosley (45-5, 38 KOs), the highly regarded former welterweight champion deflected perfectly. “Everything is about the fight,” Mosley said regarding his upcoming encounter with WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KO’s) on January 24th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. “I don’t know anything about that. All I care about is Margarito.”

The inquiring writer never got the answer he was searching for and his phone line was cut off when he pushed the issue during the teleconference sponsored by the co-promoters of the event, Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank. (Editor Note: I do not support the act of cutting off the phone line. The steroid issue is a legitimate question, and to cut off the questioner smacks of censorship. –Ed) You can’t blame Mosley for dodging questions about his reported past use of performance enhancement drugs. That was then. The Pomona native has a huge task ahead of him in trying to derail the sizzling hot career of the Tijuana fighter aptly nicknamed “The Tijuana Tornado.”

Focus and a top rate preparation camp is a must. “You have to be in tremendous shape to beat him,” Mosley said. “When you fight someone like Margarito you have to work on everything. Boxing and moving, turning and dipping. Like I always do, I’m going to do my best to get my shots in.”

Trainer Nazim Richardson, who also trains the legendary Bernard Hopkins, feels that Mosley’s speed will make a huge difference against Margarito. “Speed is always going to be a factor when you face Shane Mosley,” said Richardson, who is working in place of Mosley’s dad, Jack, who has parted ways again with his son. “It’s not just about speed, it’s about using it correctly. It’s about finding Margarito’s vulnerable spots and attacking them.”

After witnessing Margarito’s crushing and emphatic victory over Puerto Rican idol, Miguel Cotto, Mosley is definitely the underdog among the so called “boxing experts.” Cotto’s undoing, Mosley feels, was that he didn’t know what he was up against in the fierce and determined 30 year old Mexican. “I think Cotto was fighting great for most of the fight but he didn’t know what Margarito brought to the table,” Mosley said. “I’ve fought a lot of Mexican fighters so I know what he’s bringing. I know that type of style. I know how to pace myself and I know how to throw body shots and Margarito gets bothered by body shots.”

Margarito’s resistance to punches has been remarkable during his career. Paul Williams and Cotto, two fearsome punchers, tried but couldn’t dent Margarito’s chin. “I think it’s something that people are born with,” Margarito said. “The preparation in the gym makes you even stronger and more durable. I don’t rely on my ability to take punches. If anything, I’m always looking to get hit less.”

Win or lose, it’s been rumored that Margarito will eventually face Cotto in a rematch. Some far fetched reports have even insinuated that #1 pound for pound king, Manny Pacquiao, might be next on the list. “I’ve heard about all those things but I don’t pay any attention to that. I have a mission and that’s to beat Shane Mosley. Nothing will take my focus from that,” he said. “If my promoter Bob Arum decides that those are good fights for me then he’ll make them happen. For now I’m just thinking about the 24th and nothing else.”

After Mosley’s less than spectacular performance against Ricardo Mayorga, many spectators felt that “Sugar Shane” lost some of his sweetness. Margarito isn’t buying it. “People say that he’s not the same as before but I’m not going to take much stock in that,” he said. “He’s got world class experience and he’s a great fighter. I’m at my peak and that’s the only thing I’m going to count on. I believe I’ll win. It’s all about the way I train, that’s what always wins me fights.”

There were press releases that came out from Mosley’s camp questioning Margarito’s eagerness to fight during the initial stages of negotiations. “When I heard about the reports, I just laughed. How’s it possible that I’m scared of Mosley since I’ve been the one looking to fight him for years. That was just ridiculous. Now that the opportunity is here I’m going to take full advantage of it.”

Thirty seven year old Mosley thinks he will again pull off the big surprise like he did before at the exact same venue against Oscar De La Hoya in June of 2000. “I feel more comfortable and confident right now than when I fought Oscar,” he said. “I’m confident that I’ll look spectacular and I’m confident that the fans watching around the world will be shocked and surprised.”

The event is on pace to sell out the 19,000 plus seat venue.

The undercard:

Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (22-1-1, 15 KOs) has been penciled in to meet Edel Ruiz (31-21-4, 22 KOs) as part of the supporting show. No disrespect, but Edel Ruiz against “The Ghost”? Really?

Margarito vs. Mosley will be televised live on HBO's World Championship Boxing beginning at 10pm ET / 7pm PT. Remaining tickets, priced at $150, $75, $50 and $25, are available at the STAPLES Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 213-480-3232 and online at www.ticketmaster.com

#1 Pacfan P4P "Express":  This fight is going to be a better turnout than the public expects. Fireworks with both guys and hundreds of punches thrown in each round. Mosley by a hair-split decision.
Monday Jan 19, 2009 01:50:23 PM
Fil Sanchez:  Shane has as good a chin as Margarito. Margarito is not as good a puncher as Shane. Winner by unanimous decision or KO will be Shane.
Monday Jan 19, 2009 02:05:01 PM
Jesus:  Im going for Margo Shane is great but Margo is in his prime and even tho shane is faster and has a good punch i see Margo breaking him down and winning the second half of the fight maybe getting a KO in the 12
Monday Jan 19, 2009 02:59:30 PM
Peter Egley:  I'd never heard any Sugar Shane steroid issue. He sounds like he's pulling some BS.
Monday Jan 19, 2009 03:17:47 PM
Arturo:  If Margarito is in the same shape and mentality as he was against Cotto, it can be a long night for Mosley.I hope that Sugar Shane doesn't pull off a DE LA Hoya on us.If things get rough
Monday Jan 19, 2009 04:14:46 PM
Gerald:  For whatever reason, Mosley gets a free pass on his steroids use, while other prominent athletes have become pariahs. Don't be fooled, he knew what he was doing. Anyway, I think that Margarito will punish SSM. Shane doesn't have the speed and legs anymore to escape from Margo's nonstop bombs. Also, a heavyweight couldn't hurt Tony M. He's got the best chin in the game, P4P. As for the Pacquiao comment, give me a break! Manny wwould have NO chance against Margarito. It seems that here the pro-PacMan people hate Margarito and give him no respect. If Margarito can get Pacquiao, he ought to take the fight for free. It will be easier than a sparring session.
Monday Jan 19, 2009 04:54:54 PM
Isaiah:  Exscuse me? I'm picking Mosley to win in this fight, but it's a fact that Margarito is defianitely the harder puncher. Mosley has plenty of pop, but the harder puncher is Margarito, no doubt about it. By the way, both men's chins are excellent and when has Mosley ever pulled a chicken De La Hoya move? Both men will not submit. This fight will go the distance, but I bet Sugar Shane will be feeling sweet when the UD is read in his favor. 115-113 Mosley. You heard it here first! Next up will be a Mosley/Cotto rematch for the Ring Welterweight championship of the world!
Monday Jan 19, 2009 05:06:47 PM
rudy:  Margarito to give Mosley a brutal beatdown, Stoppage in 10. Shame Mosley thinks he has faced a Mexican pressure fighter like Margarito before but he's fooling himself into thinking he has a chance. No one fights like the Tijuana Tornado. Brings power, size, and 100+ punches per round like him. No one on Mosley's resume even comes close to resembling Antonio's insane style of fighting. A shot and obese Vargas? Raul Marquez? Antonio Diaz? Manuel Gomez (who was destroyed in 1 rd w/Tony)?? David Estrada? Leija? LOL!! BS!! Nazim better have the towel on stand by.
Monday Jan 19, 2009 06:08:40 PM
DaveB:  These upcoming fights over the next few months have got me excited in a way I haven't been in a long time. Mosley's hand speed definitely rules. Can he take the relentless pressure that Margarito will bring all night? If he can and if he can pick his spots I see him winning quite easily. If he can't then he gets a beat down but not by knockout. I'll have to think about this one a little bit. Yes I believe Mosley knew about the steriods. They (the athletes) always deny it.
Monday Jan 19, 2009 06:18:54 PM
aldin:  For me, Margarito will win this encounter. He is younger than Shane. If there's any way Shane can win, it would be by decision. He has to fight smartly or he will get KOd by Margarito
Monday Jan 19, 2009 06:48:03 PM
Saul:  I'm gonna try and get tickets at the door of from a scalper if i have to. Is anyone else going to this one at Staples Center? How about Darchinyan-Arce at the Ponda Center?
Monday Jan 19, 2009 07:03:56 PM
frank jones:  I'll be there but from what I hear it's practically sold out so good luck getting tickets!
Monday Jan 19, 2009 07:46:34 PM
donputo69 in the toilet doing a #2:  This fight it's going to create a contreversy...cotto, mosley, margarito...it's like a love triangle...let's just say mosley wins...will cotto fight him again?...let's say margarito wins...the rematch with cotto will happen in June...so is very interesting to see what happens...holla back!!!!
Monday Jan 19, 2009 08:06:08 PM
kirk:  these both fighter are tremendous but i thin margarito will win again. KO on the entrance. haha
Monday Jan 19, 2009 09:25:19 PM
Radam G aka Humble PRG -- America is beautiful and "time 4 change" is n full effect:  The Sugarman will be in a safe place. The"eye of the storm." Because of this, he'll slow down The Tijuana Tornado monsterous pace. TS will suffer less, while causing TTT much harm. TS will be thunderbolting and thunderslapping TTT everywhere. On the shoulders, in the chest, on the ribs, in the liver, on the neck, in the face and on the arms. Every trick in the trade, TS will dare. Don't look at him as being old. Forget about his age. He's not at that stage. On a scale of one to 10, he is a shinning dime and will not fold. He's a unique kind. Reminiscent of his buddy B-Hop, we're in for a surprise again. Holla!
Monday Jan 19, 2009 11:36:50 PM
Real Talkadomus:  It's reaal simple class . Sugar Shane Mosley will beat Tony to the punch almost all night . The times he doesn't ...he can take the punches . Mosley has been known to eat straight rights but Tony's is so slow that shouldn't be a problem . Also Nazim Richardson in his corner is a definate upgrade ( no disrespect to Jack ) . If Mosley can take the body shots and nuetralize Tony's output he should take the strap . Dueces

andy from newcastle:  Radam, good to see you back to the poetry man. Mosley UD. And if he doesn't win, there's always next year's Mr.Universe competition, though he'd look silly in the microbriefs. Toonoy
Tuesday Jan 20, 2009 06:42:45 AM
Fistic Fury:  Really excited by this fight, I hope it is similar in quality to the Collazo vs Berto fight. Mosley by close but UD, he has to fight smart though and hope the gas tank doesn't empty towards the end...
Tuesday Jan 20, 2009 09:08:43 AM
Looney:  Please....Margarito by brutal KO in 10
Tuesday Jan 20, 2009 09:13:36 AM
riverside:  i know shane, i grew up in pomona, shane is going to go toe to toe with margarito, richardson in his corner is not going to help, the boxing stragedy will be thrown out the window, shane want to shut up the theory that margo is so strong and unbeateable at his own game, fighting him, take this to the bank, it's going to be a slugfest, margo will ko mosley in 10 rounds, i'm already excited
Tuesday Jan 20, 2009 09:47:12 AM
Real Talk:  If Mosley boxes more than he brawls he wins , if not he loses . When he boxed Cotto later in the fight he turned it around , just a little too late . Nazim will have him boxing . Dueces
Tuesday Jan 20, 2009 01:49:07 PM
topssantino:  margarito will win by tko in between rounds 7-11. Margarito is younger and stronger than Mosley at this point. Marge will beat Mosley up so much that mosley probably retires after thsi fght, unless Mosley will use the banned substances again...
Tuesday Jan 20, 2009 11:47:54 PM
Anony:  :::: MARGARITO BY SPLIT DECISION ::::: Mayorga is less competition than Margo and he gave Shane big trouble so the logical outcome is Margarito winning. It could be by UD but I prefer to keep it safe. AGAIN... LET'S DO A BIG WELCOME TO THE YEAR OF THE SLUG FESTS!!!!!!! TWO SATURDAYS IN A ROW!!!! FREE HBO IS THE WAY TO BE!!!! AT LAST THEY ARE HEARING US!!!!!!!
Wednesday Jan 21, 2009 02:24:23 PM
Real Talk:  The Mayorga fight has absolutely no bearing on this fight at all . Mayorga is akward and hit's hard as a mule and is faster than Tony . Much more unpredictable and equally as dangerous as Tony . Mosley has got his work cut out for his but if he sticks to the game plan 70% of the fight he's a very live dog in this one . Tony can be beat to the punch . Watch the Cotto fight , when Cotto connected first Tony missed almost everytime . I say again too much stock has been put into the Cotto fight . I'm taking Mosley by UD . Dueces

MisterLee:  nice article. Keep them coming. I read the Ring magazine issue recently, and not a single meaningful article about Mosley vs. Marg and so much information about De La Hoya. What a waste of $9. Keep up the quality TSS! :)
Thursday Jan 22, 2009 07:54:39 PM
Money Mike :  Ok I dont understand alot of you's guys theories that shane could emerge victorious. First of all I give credit 2 sugar 4 being a great boxer but he cant dance for the entire fight. Margarito just throws to many punches from to many angles relentlessley round after round. He could go 15 rounds or more at that pace if it was necessary. I just picture mosley breaking down just like cotto in the later rounds. I dont think he can withstand the punishment. Margarito in the 10th. Period
Saturday Jan 24, 2009 10:08:45 AM
future tony margarito:  Does anyone know how i can contact antonio margarito??i want to talk to him i want him to come to my house so i can see him face to face...i want him to train me..

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
