Shane Mosley's Roughing It With Middleweights

By David A. Avila

BIG BEAR LAKE, CA.-The 60-minute drive through the winding snowy mountainous roads of Big Bear Mountain can be a perilous journey, especially during the winter, as snow, black ice and falling rocks can end a journey as quickly as an invisible left hook to the chin.

Last week a female teenager took her eyes off the road for a split second and found herself plummeting down the steep mountain upside down in a Volkswagen. Somehow she escaped with minor cuts and a totaled vehicle.

Few are that lucky.

This was about my 15th drive in nearly 10 years up the mountain road for a visit to Sugar Shane Mosley (45-5, 38 KOs), who is less than two weeks away for his bid against WBA welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KOs) at the Staples Center on Saturday Jan. 24.

The Pomona native has been using the tourist resort of Big Bear for his training camp for more than nine years and now has a ritzy cabin of his own that harbors a boxing gym, numerous rooms and three floors. He also has the biggest, meanest dog you’ve ever seen. Though the dog took a chomp of me in my last visit, he still wants more. Not today buddy.

Photographer Paul Hernandez agreed to meet me in the mountain area beforehand so we hooked up a block away from the cabin. In front of Mosley’s cabin, I pumped on the horn a couple of times and someone opened the automatic gates for us to enter. Snow and ice are everywhere.

Those readers from the Midwest and East coast probably laugh about our concern over driving in winter conditions. But growing up in East L.A. where it almost never drops below freezing and snows once every 100 years, both of us are not accustomed to driving sideways on icy streets. Don’t even talk about chains.

Inside the cabin, three of Mosley’s sparring partners are wiping the morning sleep from their eyes and trying to force a smile at 10 a.m. They had been told that they were getting the day off from training. They’re ecstatic. We’re a little disappointed. We had made the mountain trek to watch them spar but somehow the p.r. people got their signals mixed up.

Oh well.

First to greet us is Enrique Ornelas, the middleweight from La Habra, California who has served as Mosley’s sparring partner for more than two years. He’s big, strong, hits hard and is a sincerely nice guy. He tells us that his brother Librado Andrade was sparring too a few weeks ago but has returned to Canada.

Andrade is the guy that knocked down IBF super middleweight titleholder Lucian Bute in the last round when they fought. The Canadian referee gave the fallen fighter 17 more seconds to recover by halting the action inappropriately and saying Andrade was not in the neutral corner. It was one of the worst robberies since Mando Muniz was denied the world title against Jose Napoles back in 1975, when “Mantequilla” could not fight after the 12th round due to cuts and a beating from the California based welterweight.

Also in Mosley’s camp is San Diego’s Eddie Sanchez, a tall and lean junior middleweight who made a name for himself several years ago when he took attended a pre-fight conference at a casino to get free grub and ended up taking a fight with two days notice. He lost nine pounds and fought and beat J.C. Candelo for the GBU Americas light middleweight title.

The final sparring partner for Mosley is Philadelphia’s Gabriel Rosado, another big middleweight fighter who looks like he could fight light heavyweight without a problem. Rosado recently handed Ireland’s James Moore his first defeat and now is going after another undefeated fighter in a few weeks.

All three boxers are sitting around, drinking juice and killing time around the pool table in the cabin. First to speak is Ornelas, who tells us what’s been happening in the sparring sessions. Usually when he spars with Mosley the blows sound like a bat hitting a big heavy bag. There’s almost a concussive feeling.

Mosley walks down the stairs and invites me and Hernandez up to go to the adjoining cabin where he has a nice warm loft that has a couple of couches and a sofa. That’s where we talked about his upcoming fight.

“I like sparring with bigger guys cause I don’t have to hold back,” said Mosley, who during sparring against the big guys likes to rear back with a slight smile like a youngster hitting off a batting tee. “They can take it.”

Mosley usually has to look up to his opponents, except in his last fight against Ricardo Mayorga. But in that fight, the tricky Nicaraguan prizefighter changed tactics and boxed and held successfully for nearly 12 rounds. It was the last minute change in his plans that led to his downfall.

“As soon as he tried to fight his old style that’s when I knocked him out,” says Mosley laughing. “He ran right into it.”

Fighting bigger guys is almost a ritual for Mosley. There were two battles with Vernon Forrest, two with Winky Wright and two with Fernando Vargas. Now it’s back to norm.

“The strongest guy was Winky Wright,” said Mosley, who lost big in their first encounter but a narrow defeat by split-decision in their rematch. “Winky walks around at 190. Vargas walks around at 220.”

Mention of Margarito causes a brief twinkle and smile in Mosley who is sitting back on a couch with ESPN running on a big screen TV as we talk about the upcoming fight.

Mountain preparation is engrained in Mosley. I remember back in October 2000 when he trained at a facility called Big Bear Training and Fitness for an upcoming world title defense against Antonio Diaz. It was the strangest thing because both he and Diaz used the same gym to prepare and would see each other every day. First Mosley’s team would work and would cross the little five-feet corridor as Team Diaz would walk in. Both guys would greet each other amicably and proceed peacefully. Their fight took place 2,500 miles away in New York City and where they bludgeoned each other for six rounds.

This is a different fight. Most boxing followers wonder how Mosley will survive against the murderous body punches of Margarito.

“I’m a pretty good body puncher too,” said Mosley, who dropped David Estrada with body blows in their encounter several years ago. “I may be older but I keep in pretty good shape. I work hard so I can take body blows.”

Ornelas, Rosado and Sanchez agree that Mosley can give Margarito problems he hasn’t encountered before.

“Shane can change up in the ring without hesitation,” says Ornelas, who has regularly sparred with Mosley during the past several years. “He’s very strong.”

Sanchez, who has a six-inch height advantage and an extremely long reach, says the smaller Mosley can fight in a variety of ways if he chooses.

“He’ll adapt to any fighting style,” says Sanchez, who also has served as a training partner in previous Mosley camps. “He can turn it on in a split-second.”

Can he adapt to the endless volume punching of Margarito who follows in the footsteps of many other great Mexican fighters?

“Since I was a kid I was facing tough Mexicans in the gym who fought the same style,” says Mosley with a slight chuckle. “Guys like Zack Padilla, Julio Cesar Chavez and Genaro Hernandez.”

Mosley said he realized as an amateur he would need to learn how to fight toe-to-toe against guys who cared less about jabs and more about punishing.

“I had to adapt to the Mexican style of fighting,” Mosley says laughing. “They’ll take a punch to give you two in return. They don’t care about getting hit. They want to hit you.”

Mosley explained how East Coast boxers differ drastically from West Coast fighters.

“In the East they don’t want to get hit at all,” Mosley says. “In the West they get insulted if they don’t get hit. They don’t care.”

Throughout his career he’s shown an aptitude for the Mexican fighting style, from fighting early on against roughnecks like Mauro Gutierrez in 1993, to fighting elite junior middleweights like Fernando Vargas and Winky Wright.

Mosley talked about his travels to East L.A. gyms early in his career when he battled against Padilla, who was much like Margarito a nonstop punching machine. There was also Genaro “Chicanito” Hernandez who though tall as Margarito, preferred to fight inside like the Tijuana Tornado. And there were also sessions with the real Chavez, not the sons.

“Those guys didn’t take it easy,” says Mosley with a chuckle. “I held my own.”

Now the question is not about his ability, but his age.

“I train hard so I can fight at this level against the best,” said Mosley. “I think I showed Margarito how to beat Miguel Cotto. Margarito probably saw the tape of my fight with Cotto.”

It’s another perilous road for Mosley. At age 37, the Pomona prizefighter wants to prove that like Bernard Hopkins, age is not a factor.

“I still got some tricks up my sleeve,” he laughs.

rudy:  Mosley is full of himself heading into this fight, he really doesnt know what's coming into the ring come 1/24. Margarito is going to punish him.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 07:38:14 AM
GOAT:  I like Shane to pull the upset! There is always at least 1 style that gives fighters a hard time and I think Shane has the style to give Marg trouble! Marg is very beatable, people keep saying he indestructable, well we we see him fall. Down goes Margarito, down goes Margarito!
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 08:20:37 AM
D:  I am pretty convinced that Shane Mosely is going to win this fight because i think both of these guys are good inside fighters and I think Shane's speed will win out. If Margarito is going to win then he is going to have to start fast because Mosely will not fall apart the Cotto did.

Radam G aka Humble PRG giving Mosley a small chance:  Wow! I believe this bout is going to surprise many people. Holla!

andy from newcastle:  Sugar Shane UD. No surprises, just a classic. Toonoy

riverside:  mosley has always been one of my favorites fighter, but i think he is going to get hurt this fight and stop in later rounds, it's like he wants to prove he still has it,he keeps on shrugging it off like margarito is not that big, margo is a beast, power punches nonstop with concrete chin
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 09:26:43 AM
punksailor:  i really do think that mosley will be a tough challenge his speed is great and his boxing abilities are great. he is a very tough opponent for margarito that being said i really do not think he will upset the tijuana tornado. just like with cotto he will use his agility and skill early on in the fight and because he doesn't have in my opinion enough power in his punch to even slightly hurt margarito he will be overwhelmed by margarito's onslaught of punches and either the fight will be stopped in the later rounds or margarito wins by unanimous decision.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 11:21:59 AM
Robert Curtis:  Margarito is not just a slugger. He throws excellent punches from all angles and they keep coming. They aren't Calzaghe slaps either. There are so many old goats still plugging today in bad fights that no one believes age can be a factor anymore. This isn't Evander fighting Shrek or B-Hop fighting some overblown white wonderboy. This is 37 yr old Shane fighting an authentic bad-ass Mexican. Grandpa Mosely won't quit on either his stool or his knee, but I'm thinking he'll lose by decision in bruising face-off.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 11:41:16 AM
punksailor :  i really like mosley he's a good solid reputable boxer. thats why i gave him the benefit of the doubt with this whole balco scandal. he's fast and mightily skillful. that being said an upset for the Tijuana tornado i don't think so as with cotto he will probably look to be landing some good punches in the early rounds but none of them will hurt margarito. eventually Mosley will succumb to Margaritos bombs and either Tko'd in the later rounds or unanimous decision for the mexican phenom. although if and this is a stretch (but as we all know the sweet science is very unpredictable perfect example Pacquiao's stunning upset of the golden boy) a defeat comes at the hands of Mosley it would not upset me nor should it upset anybody else because Mosley has proven himself enough times. a good match but i will be rooting for my fellow mexican brethren.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 12:04:42 PM
#1 Pacfan P4P "Express":  I also see an upset in this fight, Mosley by split-hair decision. Mosley will box Marg all over the ring like Williams did in their bout. Like Goat said there is always 1 style that gives a fighter difficulties.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 12:10:06 PM
Isaiah:  Shane Mosley will outbox Margarito in a close desicion. Margarito will press the action all 12 rounds, but "Sugar" comes out smelling sweet. Besides, Mosley should have been the one to give Cotto his first loss and I'd like to see that rematch before a Margartio/Cotto rematch.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 12:15:21 PM
#1 Pacfan P4P "Express":  Mosley is also much more well conditioned than most fighters these days. Cotto could not sustain his boxing plan in the later rounds, i feel Mosley can box Marg in all 12 rounds with no problem.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 12:23:28 PM
Radam G aka Humble PRG :  Nice masterpiece, fightwriter David-Double-A! You wrote it in a way that a reader could imagine the actual visual scene. I'll been watching a few tapes of Margarito and Mosley. And I am beginning to think that Mosley will win this. Cotto made the Tijuana Tornado look double sharp by doing all that styling, profiling, picture taking, jitterbugging -- excessively foot moving with no pugilistic purpose and histrionics -- exaggeratedly making Margarito miss with too much head movements, shoulder rolling, parrying posing and over stepping and turning and not burning with counter punches. What Cotto did was cute to the crowd, but turned Margarito in to a monsterous tornado. (The more exaggeratedly a fighter moves against TTT, the more excited TTT gets and storms that butt up. And the Sugarman is right about a lot of West Coast fighters -- "They appear to get seriously p*ssed if you missed them." The Sugarman is going fight in the "eye of the storm" in a loosey-goosy minimun foot moving way and RIDE and RIP, HIDE and HOOK, TURN and BURN. He will be pounding to the body and head, the arms and shoulders. TTT will not be able to fire umpteen punches. The Tijuana Tornardo is going to be meeting a tornado chaser. Ironically, sugarman will chase TTT and blast him with deadly Sugar. He got Shane in his game. Holla!
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 12:28:40 PM
rbk:  Too many are listening to B-Hop. Mosley can't run for 12 rounds and Margarito will goat him into a battle. Could get ugly for Mosley's retirement fight.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 12:41:24 PM
RIVERSIDE:  i'm suprise how so many people are giving shane a good chance, i like shane but you got to remember cotto beat him, cotto is one of the best in world, cotto outboxed mosley, i just can't believe mosley will outbox margo, mosley is going to trade with him, margo will eat mosley's punches to land his, mosley is talking about he has 38 knockouts and that he has power too, mosley is naive, most of his ko where at lightweight
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 12:41:52 PM
#1 Pacfan P4P "Express":  Remember Riverside Mosley is no brawler, Cotto beat Mosley in his own game. Cotto made Mosley chase him while it was supposed to be the other way around. Mosley needs to go back to the basics and fundamentals and remember how it got him to this status. Marg is great but i just don't think it will that easy of a fight for him..
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 12:56:35 PM
#1 Pacfan P4P "Express":  Can someone please tell Manny to take the d@mn 50/50 split and stop being greedy? There are some issues that we Filipinos need to work on..........
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 01:02:30 PM
punksailor:  i like Mosley he is a strong and reputable fighter. that is why i gave him the benefit of the doubt when i heard of the balco scandal. he is mightily skillful and fast. he will be a real test for Margarito. with that being said Mosley will be a test that Margarito in my opinion will overwhelmingly pass. Margarito is much more strong and has a steel chin. although Mosley is very fast his punches lack the power to do any harm to Margarito. i think Mosley will come out boxing from round one and on and will land some solid shots like cotto. then just like his old puerto rican foe Mosley will crack under the pressure of the Tijuana tornado. i predict if not a Tko in the later rounds a unanimous decision for the mexican phenom. and if and this is a great if (because we fight fans know how unpredictable the sweet science is let us not forget foreman-Moorer, douglas-Tyson,or more recently Pacquiaos recent spectacular upset of the golden boy.) but if mosley pulls out an upset i will not be disappointed nobody should b
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 01:13:09 PM
riverside:  pacfan your right, mosley chased cotto and it was supposed to be the other way around, mosley made adjustments in the fight and he ran out of time
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 01:27:13 PM
punksailor:  so did anybody manage to get tickets to go see the fight?
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 02:24:48 PM
Yuvie:  Mosley will win this. Cotto/Mosley was a close fight and you have to remember that Mosley was coming on stronger later in the fight. Margarito will start slow, as he normally does and probably lose the early rounds. I see Margarito coming on strong during the middle but Mosley will get his second wind as the fight progresses. Mosley to win by close but clear decision.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 02:32:08 PM
SICMENO:  mosley can box and run all he wants, sooner or later his legs are gonna go! no way around it. margarito is something else. he will apply too much pressure.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 02:40:47 PM
#1 Pacfan P4P "Express":  As we are anticipating this fight and make thought out predictions, hopes are that this will live up to it's expectations. There's no doubt these two will put on a show cause they come in the ring to fight! Who ever is the man raising his hand at the end will sure have a great ending or great fights ahead of him.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 03:30:56 PM
TOMMY R:  mosley is an all time great but he is no longer at his peak and certainly not inproving on the other hand rito is getting better w each fight and entering his prime, most people do not realize just how tough rito is, hes the man of steel and this fight is a no brainer, entertaining yes but rito stopps mosley late or gives him a horrific 12 rd beating- PERIODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 04:23:04 PM
Fistic Fury:  I've been saying from day one that Mosley is my pick in this fight, I just think he has the perfect style for Margarito and that style is good movement, a sharp jab and speedy combinations. My only concern is that it could take a similar course to Margarito vs Cotto with Margarito coming on strong to end his tiring opponent late and if Mosley is to win he needs to keep the movement up to the final bell. If he performs the way he did against Mayorga he will be beat. Also they fight at welter and Mosley has been campaigning at jr middle so that will be interesting. Taking everything in to account I like Mosley by UD. BE SMART SUGAR BECAUSE IF YOU AREN'T THINGS WILL GO SOUR!!!
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 06:02:49 PM
Real Talk:  The first 2 sentences in your post I agree with Fistic . Don't forget Mosley is a crafty vet and will tie up to slow down the action . He also is very very durable , and has fought bigger and better men than Tony . If he can limit Margos body shots, box smart and pick his spots to rumble he improves his odds a lot . I think too many people are putting too much stock in the last fight . This is a different opponent with a different style . We all know Mosley will put boxing on ice and fight , he needs to pick and choose in my humble opinion . He needs to use Tony's strength against . Tony throws a lot of shots and has a great chin . He likes to walk through punches . Get his eye and obstruct his vision , then the angles and distances will work even better . A page from the Hopkins /Pavlik fight will pay some dividends in this one . Poof , I'm Vapors
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 07:19:54 PM
in touch :  mosley certainly has what it takes to beat margarito. he has the hand speed, the boxing ability and ability to take a good shot. sugar's problem is he does get hit and that might cost him. 'cause margarito doesn't know when to stop punching. he will continue to throw until someone surrenders. when mosley lost it was to guys who were taller and good boxers (save for cotto, who is mosley's height). margarito is taller but not the boxer that winky was or forrest. this fight surely will be exciting, there is no doubt. it's one in which we will get our money's worth. a great matchup, between two tough cats who can dish it out and take it. this is what the sport needs. i'm excited.
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 07:21:05 PM
ben-ali:  i think mosley will win on this one and then mosley will fight the winner of hatton and pacquio
Wednesday Jan 14, 2009 11:03:12 PM
pete Steward:  People are forgetting that Margarito though tough as Hell is not unbeatable he's been beaten 5 times one because of a cut. The last three by boxers and Shane is a boxer. Mosley's also one the strongest toughest and most fearless warriors that has ever fought. He has a bulletproof chin, body and a heart to match. In the 1st Vernon Forrest fight Vernon almost Decapitated Shane in the 2nd round (only time he was knocked down) and almost disemboweled him in the 11th round and he refused to quit and went the 12. Cotto was back pedaling in the final rounds of their close fight. Shane hurt Cotto several times and took his Cottos best Left hook Hammers without folding once. Margarito is a beast and training like a machine but so is Shane and his gym wars are the stuff of Legend. Shane won't quit like cotto did he die first, he's Gatti with more talent and a better chin. B-hop a (AT 43!) did it with Pavlik and his trainer is now working with Mosley. If lighting can strike twice then Shane "SHAZAM!" Mosley can get the upset. I can’t wait to see this fight.
Thursday Jan 15, 2009 01:57:34 AM
jimmy:  mosley has a good training camp on his side eddie sanchez is a strong, tall and hard to hit skiny guy. he can take and give a punch like any middle weigth figther. if mosley sticks to his game plan he should come out of that figth with a big WIN...
Thursday Jan 15, 2009 02:26:58 AM
andy from newcastle:  It's interesting the way opinion has been swinging Mosley's way on this one over the last month. When it was first announced, there were only one or two of us who gave him the nod. now people are starting to think it through and putting the 'monster' Margarito in perspective, and reaching a more reasoned choice. as I've been saying since day one, SSSSssssuuuuuuggggggaaaaarrrrrrr Sssssshhhhaaaaannnnneeeeee Mmmmooooosssssllleeeeyyyy IS THE MAN. TOONOY

andy from newcastle:  As an aside, and possibly of interest to David Avila, it has been reported here, that Vernon forrest is trying to set up a defence of his title, here in Cayman, against our very own Charles Whittaker, april or May this year,. Radam G aka Humble PRG w/my peeps n National City, Cali:  Wow! Andy, there are rumors flowing around that the new "Tricky" Ricky Hatton is going to be visiting there in Cayman at the end of this month before starting his Las Vegas training camp in February with Pops Joy May. Holla!

andy from newcastle:  Hatton here? Now that will be well cool. As for MAB v The Sixty Second Man. If Barrera can even dig half way into his bag of skills, it will be Amir Khan't. Toonoy

andy from newcastle:  Anyway, Hatton may just come for a holiday if greedy little Pacman continues to try and be the new DLH (change from the new Hank Armstrong). Sorry Radam, but he's behaving like a spoilt tosser. Toonoy

Javier:  Margo will stop Mosley in 6.

Radam G aka Humble PRG gettin' ready 4 da U.S. Prez change:  No need for apology, Andy! I guess this is just a case of not understanding the humbleness of a Pinoy. As I have and will always say, people don't know the toughness of a Pinoy. Manny will not be ripped off in money or status. And too many people stereotype the humbleness of my peeps as being easy, gullible and vulnerable. Humble is a not a euphemistic word, or exchangable one, for easy, guillible or vulnerable. Holla!

AA:  After 1/24 mosley is going to be remembered as Sugar "SHAME" Mosley, i mean honestley he was alrite in his prime and even then he wasnt and never be as great as margarito. 2nd, ask yourself this who destroyed cotto.....MARGARITO, who got embaressedby cotto....mosley, and like margarito said, all his oponents say that his style for theres but all of that changes as soon as he hits them, and he NEVER takes one step back. There never has been and never been a boxer as great as a mexican boxer!!

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
