Holm doesn't grouse that female fighters haven't been getting much ink or as many gigs recently. She just concentrates on what she can control.

Holm=Female Boxing's Best

By Dan Horgan

Male boxing and female boxing are almost incomparable.

As men’s pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, now world-famous for his thumping of Oscar De La Hoya in December, continues to count the millions of dollars he made in 2008, female boxing’s best fighter, welterweight Holly Holm, is in the peak stages of preparation for her title showdown with France’s Myriam Lamare on January 23 – a fight that few people will see and even fewer will pay for.

But by talking with Holm (22-1-1, 6 KOs), you’d never know that female prize-fighting is a near-dead sport.  Despite performing in front of humble crowds and making pennies in comparison to most star male fighters, Holm is almost indifferent to the state of her craft.  She is instead focused on wiping out competition to satiate the appetite on her provincial fans.

“I’m from New Mexico, and we have great, loyal fans here in boxing and MMA,” said Holm, whose boyfriend is MMA middleweight and fellow New Mexico native Joey Villasenor.  “They’re very supportive, and when they talk about me, I want to live up to what they say.”

Holm’s fight with Lamare is her first since a draw with fellow star Mary Joe Sanders in October.  That bout was a rematch of a June showdown that saw Holm prevail via comfortable unanimous decision.

Considering the severe lack of depth in women’s boxing, some pundits have already been clamoring for Holm and Sanders to throw bones a third time.  But Holm, who has now been fighting for seven years, is in no rush to dance another ten rounds with the daughter of former Detroit Lions tight end Charlie Sanders.

“I don’t want to fight [Sanders] right now,” said Holm.  “I think [a third fight] would be too much like the first two, and I just wouldn’t be motivated for it.”

Against Sanders, Holm, who started her career at light welterweight, moved up to fight at the 154-pound limit which she has trouble hitting “even as a walking-around weight.”  So the southpaw will move back down to 147 pounds to fight Lamare, who has spent the bulk of her career at 140 pounds.

Holm said she won’t take Lamare lightly, meaning the holidays – and a visit to Villasenor and family in Farmington – didn’t get in the way of her training.

“I ran with him every day up there,” she said.  “The only bad thing was that there wasn’t any sparring, but we have plenty of that in my gym.”

“Lamare’s a tough opponent, a strong opponent,” continued Holm.  “We’ve fought some of the same opponents and she has a lot of KOs, so we have to be careful.”

Careful not to let down a New Mexico fan base that loves Holm, despite the poor state of her profession.

Radam G aka Humble PRG:  Wow! Time for CHANGE is in the HOUSE! Looking great writing about the ladies. It's time to start giving them props. Nice piece, Fightwriter Dan H. Holla!

Isaiah:  Yes, there are women that can fight and there really needs to be some around since Laila Ali is gone, but it doesn't matter. No matter how good they are in all aspects of the sport, their male counterparts will always be more popular and have a shot at higher paydays. This isn't the regular workforce where job performance is all that matters. It's a fact. The general public will pay much more attention and just plain pay much more, to watch men fight then women. I respect the women fighters, but I won't pay a dime to watch them fight. I can name all the current, legit male world boxing champions right now if I wanted to. I can't name one alphabet female title holder. I just don't care. Sorry.

SchoolOfHardKnocks:  Holly is a great looking girl, she is the face of female boxing in the U.S. But Susi Kentikian is the best P4P fighter...I'm a big supporter of female boxing and It's okay that some people don't care about female boxing. Just like a lot of men don't watch the WTA, WNBA and they still have there own thing. I don't think women should get as much money as men in the big fights because they can't draw the attention like the men. Take the Holm vs Sanders 2nd fight. The arena hold like 16,000 and the arena was almost empty. Take the Margarito vs Mosley fight. They aren't great ticket sellers but it will be packed in Staples. I was at the Vargas vs Mayorga fight and it was loaded in Staples. Women don't market themselves like the men either. There's a lot of things that they need to do to make it more popular. to watch. It can be done but they have to know what to do.

BoxingFan789:  Holly Holm and other hometown champions have no one but themselves to blame for the demise of women’s pro boxing in the US. Top athletes never meet in the ring because their promoters cannot control the outcomes. If Holm is standing at the end of an Albuquerque fight, she wins. Ask Ann Marie Saccurato. Holm’s draw with Sanders in Michigan was likely a win for Holm but it was Sanders’ promotion. What goes around, comes around. US female fighters avoid Albuquerque so Holm’s team is reaching out to France for Myriam Lamare. Lamare is not the fighter she was a few years ago. And Lamare will tire at the mile-high New Mexico contest. Another safe bout for Holm.

Peter "Bad Axe" Egley:  I've never seen Myriam Lamare, but I hope she kicks Holm's rear end. lol Actually I'm a fan of Holly, but I was so pleased that MJ Sanders got a draw against her in their rematch. Sanders-Holm III in neutral Vegas would settle things. I also don't really know what the women earn in the USA as far as paydays, it seems like I'm always hearing a standard of 5 grand which is pathetic and peanuts. It's total bull. Was the Saccurato-Holm decision controversial? All I know is that if I were a boxer, I wouldn't care where I fought. If you put a whuppin' on your opponent, it shouldn't matter where the fight is. Sorry if this sounds PO'd, I watch too much TV/movies, and Dennis Hopper can play a really good ba**! "Choose life." LOL

Peter Egley:  I love the ladies, I mean the boxers. Boxing is boxing, no matter the gender. With Hasim Rahman apparently finally eliminating himself as a legitimate contender, Laura Serrano is retired, and I don't know who the HBO/SHO fighters are, I'm down to one veteran fighter whose career I've been following. For me boxing goes in cycles, I've followed Layla McCarter's career since I first caught her on a rare televised female match against Claudia Valenciana approx. 5 years ago. I don't even think Valenciana fights anymore, but she was a solid fighter, as of course mighty McCarter was/is, dropping the taller girl to the canvas twice in an exciting match. I'm kinda interested in seeing how Deontay Wilder's post-Olympics career goes, but beyond that, hey, life is good. Time to play some rock & roll.

SchoolOfHardKnocks:  Holly is a product of having a promoter in Albuquerque,New Mexico get her fights to make her look good. BOXINGFAN789 you are right, as long as these girls are standing on there feet at the end of fight they will get the victory. Holm, Sanders are basically the main women that I'm referring about. Also what has hurt female boxing are women like Laila Ali, she has made a lot of money boxing and she has never given back. She is a selfish person that didn't care about the sport. Her father gave her the opportunity and that made it a given to her but she never promoted female boxing because she would have been heard if she stood up.

BoxingFan789:  Laila Ali expressed interest in returning to boxing to fight the winner of Holm/Sanders. Ali’s out of work (she co-hosted the recently canceled American Gladiators) so she may return. But don’t expect a contest with Holm. Ali’s naturally bigger and Holm’s promotion won’t take the risk. What about Jaime Clampitt of Rhode Island? A Holm/Clampitt contest would be good. Clampitt has had several cards fall through and wants to fight again. The author of this article is a favorite of Clampitt’s promotion – maybe he could convince them to match Clampitt with Holm. Both are hometown champions so the challenge is great.
Friday Jan 16, 2009 12:15:22 PM
SchoolOfHardKnocks:  Jimmy Burchfield is Clampitts promoter. I don't see why she had fights fall out when all they could have done was get girls to keep her busy. Burchfield puts on shows every month. That would be a good fight Holm/Clampitt but Clampitt wants to box also so I don't see any excitement though. I would like to see Saccurato and Clampitt. That would be a very good fight. I also agree that Ali is just naturally too big for Holm so they won't take that risk. Well the author of this article if he is a fan of Clampitts promoter then he should ask him why he doesn't put on Clampitt more and other females. He also use to promote Missy Fiorentino and that was a great fight between Clampitt and Fiorentino.

FightFanWest:  The minute Holm faces someone who can really fight lets see how long she stays in boxing. I believe she likes boxing right now only because she wins. If she ever fights someone who is going to hit her to hurt her then she will quit and go and do aerobics.
Monday Jan 19, 2009 12:17:41 PM
BoxingFan789:  Watched the Holm/Lamare fight on WBAN. 98-92? 97-93? Not a chance. 96-94 was closer but I saw it even. 2400 in the audience? Is this all Holm draws? Holm’s promoter tried to lure retired fighter Lucia Rijker to fight Holm. He also sidestepped a rematch challenge in France, deferring to Holm’s trainer. French fights have over 10,000 attend so money’s good. Holm won’t go to France. No protection for her there. A big promoter would make this fight work.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
