Is Pacman The Next Henry Armstrong?

By David A. Avila

Boxing experts say a good big man always beats a good little man when you get down to the root of analyzing a fight between champions. Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao are going to vigorously test that theory.

East L.A.’s De La Hoya (39-5, 30 KOs), a winner of world titles in six weight divisions meets lightweight champion Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KOs), a Filipino superstar, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday Dec. 6. The fight will be shown on HBO pay-per-view.

De La Hoya stands five inches taller and has fought in the 160-pound middleweight division. But Pacquiao has captured world titles in the flyweight, junior featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight divisions.

Can the smaller Pacquiao beat De La Hoya?

Since the Filipino prizefighter erupted into the American consciousness in 2001 with a one-sided beating of South Africa’s Lehlo Ledwaba in Las Vegas for the IBF junior featherweight title, he’s proven to be equal to any challenge so far.

Pacquiao, 29, has combined speed and power in his diminutive size to form a potent fighting machine that has only gotten better the past seven years.

But can he beat De La Hoya?

Since De La Hoya entered into pro boxing he’s captured the junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight titles with his own combination of polished fighting skills, speed and a deadly left hand.

At 35, the East Los Angeles prizefighter known as the Golden Boy has amassed more money from boxing than any other in the history of the sport, including Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.

He’s a money making machine and that’s why this fight is happening.

“It's not for the money,” argues Freddie Roach, who trains Pacquiao. “It’s because I think Manny can beat him.”

The Filipino star is poised to make near $20 million. That’s more than all of his previous fights combined. For De La Hoya, it’s just another $20 million dollar payday. But it’s also a welcome fight for the health of the boxing scene and both Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, who are promoting the fight.

Dollars

Experts say that Pacquiao is fighting De La Hoya because “if it makes dollars it makes sense.”

De La Hoya is in a class by himself when it comes to generating money. No other present day boxer commands that kind of box office appeal, whether it’s pro boxing or mixed martial arts. Against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007 that fight attracted a record 2.2 million pay-per-views.

“Everybody wants to fight my brother,” said Joel De La Hoya, older brother and assistant trainer to Oscar De La Hoya. “They know it means a big payday.”

Others theorize that Pacquiao’s trainer Roach saw that his protégé could easily lose to the other 135-pound lightweights such as WBA titleholder Nate Campbell, former champion Juan Diaz or Joan Guzman. All have the speed and boxing prowess to give anyone problems in the ring, including Pacquiao.

“Nate would have loved to fight Pacquiao,” said John David Jackson, who trains Campbell.

Floyd Mayweather Sr., who recently prepared Great Britain’s Ricky Hatton for his victory over Paul Malignaggi, said Guzman was the perfect fighter to dethrone Pacquiao.

“Guzman would give Pacquiao fits,” said Mayweather.

Still, in the last three years, it’s been Pacquiao who has succeeded in every challenge, including a whitewash over Mexico’s featherweight triumvirate of Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez.

It’s because of these victories and his last knockout win over Chicago’s David Diaz for the lightweight title that some are calling “Pacman” one of the greatest fighters of the current era and possibly capable of doing what no other fighter has accomplished in nearly 30 years.

Duran and Armstrong

Back in 1980, then lightweight Roberto “Hands of Stone” Duran moved up to the welterweight division and beat the seemingly unbeatable Sugar Ray Leonard to capture the welterweight world championship.

Perhaps the greatest feat of all time in pro boxing occurred in the 1930s when Henry Armstrong held the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight championships simultaneously in 1938.

Is Pacquiao another Armstrong?

“I saw a lot of fighters and Henry Armstrong was one of the best of all time, including Muhammad Ali,” said Sun City, California's Bennie Georgino, who saw Armstrong fight many times at the Olympic Auditorium. “He was a perpetual machine and would throw so many punches.”

Armstrong began as a rough and tumble featherweight who would fight anywhere regardless of the opponent. He fought in dozens of fights in the nearby Olympic Auditorium against unknown but extremely tough Mexican fighters.

Sound familiar?

Pacquiao is an aggressive pressure fighter who is making a jump in weight to prove his mettle against the bigger De La Hoya.

Roach attended De La Hoya’s fight against Steve Forbes and theorized Pacquiao could win a match with the East L.A. boxer.

Forbes, who fought De La Hoya several months ago in May, said that comparing himself to Pacquiao is unwise.

“I’m a slick defensive fighter. Manny Pacquiao is an aggressive fighter who jumps in and out,” said Forbes, who lost by unanimous decision after 10 rounds. “Oscar is too big for him.”

Bob Arum, whose company Top Rank promotes Pacquiao, said in his experience he’s never seen anyone as capable of beating a bigger man.

“I can see Pacquiao beating him to the punch and just punching him at will,” said Arum. “Speed kills and Manny is definitely the faster man.”

If you ask the boxing trainers and fighters, most disagree.

“Oscar is too big, too fast, and he’s just a better fighter,” said Forbes, who has never been knocked out and wasn't dropped by De La Hoya when they fought. “De La Hoya has one of the best jabs I’ve ever seen.”

Roach, who trained De La Hoya for his fight against Mayweather, thinks his former pupil has lost much of his fighting skills.

“He can’t pull the trigger,” said Roach. “Manny will knock out Oscar.”

Many boxing fans are split down the middle on who will win the fight. Las Vegas has De La Hoya tabbed as a slight 2-1 favorite.

Georgino, who has managed many world champions in the past, including Danny “Little Red” Lopez, Jaime Garza and Alberto Davila, said there are many factors to consider.

“There has never been a good small guy that could beat a good big man, but De La Hoya has been around a little bit. It’s pretty hard to say who,” Georgino said. “There is the weight situation. That will be a big difference. If this guy is smart enough to not stand in front, then he stands a chance. But if De La Hoya catches up to him he will be in trouble.”

Can Pacquiao be that good little man that can beat the good big man?

De La Hoya said it’s a motivating factor.

“I’m oozing with motivation, that’s for sure,” De La Hoya said.

andy from newcastle:  Hold on. Wasn't Paul Williams the new Henry Armstrong last week? Wouldn't that make Manny the new Paul Williams? This is all getting a bit confusing. I thought this was TSS, not Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Wasn't that Mike McCallum? Or the new Mike McCallum. Toonoy

andy from newcastle:  Sadly Bob Arum is right. Manny is definitely the faster man. Unfortunately on Saturday, that will only mean he'll be the first back to the changing rooms. DLH is such a d!ck for taking this fight. I hope Manny gets him with a sucker punch from Hell (won't happen though). Toonoy

mike:  David, Pacquiao will win.
Friday Dec 5, 2008 07:49:29 AM
steve p.:  i too will be oozing with motivation if i have that much combined height and reach advantage.
Friday Dec 5, 2008 08:04:38 AM
pete steward:  I can see why there's a comparison Manny is a pocket full of terror and so was Armstrong and putting it mildly. Both are around the same height 5'5 ft, build (muscular) and both are wrecking machines. But Homicide Hank was another level that manny or even Duran never reached. 149-21-101. He’s won all 3 titles and held at the same time! And he had 101 KO's only one of 10 men to have done that. Armstrong's the only one who experts and fans alike argue may have been greater than Sugar Ray Robinson in all P4P list. That says it all. We'll never see his kind again so Manny will have to do. He's going to Hammer Oscar late round KO.
Friday Dec 5, 2008 08:19:56 AM
Fan Man fan:  Is he the next Henry Armstrong? Well, if Henry got KNOCKED OUT inside of 3 rounds in a fight, then yes, he's the new Henry Armstrong. Oscar KO 2. Read it and come back to this prediction on Sunday and weep.
Friday Dec 5, 2008 08:41:37 AM
Sodamn Insane:  Pacman has nothing to loose but everything to gain and He understands this just when He fought Barrera nobody gave him a chance. Now its Oscars turn to retire for good and promote Pacman .
Friday Dec 5, 2008 08:57:42 AM
rudy:  I'm just going to echo Vernon Forrest's 'pick' for the fight: "De La Hoya by KO. If De La Hoya doesn't stop him he should quit boxing. The marketing was superb and they almost made me believe Pacquiao had a chance."

Robert Curtis:  Manny doesn't belong with 147 pounders. The reason I believe he will win is because Oscar is a paper tiger. He is all hype and fumes now with no real heart left. Manny's defense gap is unhealthy in higher weight divisions. If his defense is good enough to evade Oscar's power tomorrow night, then maybe we can start making Duran comparisons. But if Manny lunges in and leaves himself open like he does against the best featherweights, it could be a short night. I'm sure Roach has corrected many of these things. But we've all seen Pacman make reckless moves in the ring as recently as 2007. Duran was complete fighter in my opinion. Manny has not put it all together yet like Roberto did. His career has been fast and fortunate. Armstrong had a much harder road to the top, from what I've read. If Pacman gets past Oscar tomorrow and maybe goes for Hatton or an unretired Mayweather next, then we can start making these lofty comparisons.
Friday Dec 5, 2008 10:26:45 AM
Viel Mervic:  Andy from newcastle, when Avila said that Manny could be the next Armstrong, it means because they have jumped from much higher weights, unlike Paul Williams who started his career at Welterweight and fought as high as middleweight: 3 divisions only! Manny started at Junior Flyweight and on Dec.6 will be fighting at welterweight: that's 10 divisions! if you're going be sarcastic, at least become reasonable, straighten up your facts. (or I might have misunderstood you: was it because Williams fought at three divisions also this year?)
Friday Dec 5, 2008 10:59:16 AM
SchoolOfHardKnocks:  Oscar will KO Manny!! Money fights don't make you a great fighter. Just because you fight a fighter that brings a lot of money to the table doesn't mean they are great fighters. I'm sick of people trying to compare this guy Pacquiao to the likes of Armstrong & Duran. Get Real! I will say it again, Manny has fought old fighters and got a reputation on that. He has not beaten any fighter like Juan Diaz, Joan Guzman, Humberto Soto or Nate Campbell. Even though Guzman and Campbell are not as young as Juan Diaz and Soto they would still beat Manny and Freddie knew that. That's why they are cashing out! They have fooled everyone to the point that most of you guys give Manny a chance. Shame on you!
Friday Dec 5, 2008 11:12:21 AM
Big Daddy:  I don't think anybody can Hate on Manny.. He's Amazing. But Oscar AND Manny are hurting Boxing with this Meaningless Money-Grab of a"Fight"..And now you got Oscar eyeing another Shorty.. Hatton.. who got worked by Luis" FREAKIN' !? " Collazo at welterweight.. It makes me Sick.
Friday Dec 5, 2008 11:16:09 AM
andy from newcastle:  @Viel. Apologies if I upset you or David. I wasn't trying to be sarcastic, just witty. I wasn't infering any questioning of facts, just using last week's comparison of PW to Henry Armstrong to make a joke. However, Manny will have to prove himself successful at lightweight (Diaz doesn't count), junior welter, and welter. Just adding the pounds doesn't make it. Though I wasn't trying to make that or any other point, in my original post. Hope that clears that up, coz I've got a Glee Club meeting in twenty minutes. Toonoy
Friday Dec 5, 2008 11:46:35 AM
andy from newcastle:  And while I'm at it... Arum may have sadly hit the nail on the head, in saying Manny is by far the faster man. He will unfortunately be the first to get back to the dressing room Saturday night. And DLH will have lost all respect because of it. Toonoy

Radam G aka Humble PRG -- the real one -- that's all you need to know:  Nice piece, Fighterwriter David-Double-A. Like one of the USA greatest amateur pugilist and a good pro -- Pete Steward -- said, Henry Armstrong cannot be matched. But my peeps PacMan is difinitely a Henry Armstrong lite. And Oscar said that this bout "will end in a KNOCKOUT. I'm taking him at his word. YOU HEARD! Oscar is going to do the CD -- THE CHRIS BYRDDD!!! The AGOAT PacMan, truthfully a Henry Armstrong lite, is going to knock out the LGOAT, skin and bones Oscar with the bad toes, in round seven or less. It's PACMAN TIME! Holla!
Friday Dec 5, 2008 02:24:36 PM
Radam G aka Humble PRG -- not feeling sorry rude haters:  Haters with that hoodlum, gutter behavior have been calling TNT -- Top Notch Trainer -- Freddie Roach a "cockroach." Okay! Go ahead, be cruel with that freedom of speech. Pinoys and Mexicans -- in the native countries -- love bird fighting. If this bout turns into one, Manny will be one fighting cock -- a winning rooster. Oscar will be one flightless, fightless punch-eater -- a losing rhea. Actually, a rhea has more meat on it than Oscar has. Skin and bones Big Money Oscar will -- like I said earlier -- do the Byrd -- the Chris Byrd. Holla!

Radam G aka Humble PRG -- stop the propaganda:  Team DLH and boxing greatest guru, Angie Dundee, are mistaken! From the jump! It ain't so. PacMan doesn't have that rumored commonality with former heavyweight champ Michael Moorer and the great Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Truth! PacMan write with his right hand and uses it more in every day's life with the left one. But he is not a natural rightie as Moorer and Hagler were. PacMan is a cultural rightie. In Mindinao (and just about all the Southern Philippines) -- and even in the great ole U.S.A. -- left handedless is frowned upon by many. So societies right hand you as much as possible. The late U.S. President Ronald Reagan was a natural leftie, but a cultural rightie. Like Manny, he wrote with his right hand, ate and shook with it, but would knock you silly with the left. And jailed NFL QB Michael Vick writes and eat with his right, but throw that Kano football with the left. So it is of no avail that Big Money O got the great Angie Dundee to study Manny, thinking that he sees a weakness in the Pac. YUP! Angie was involved in the two greatest upsets of all times -- Hagler and Moorer -- of southpaws. The two step and slide that Angie has taught Oscar will be a great mistake that Oscar makes. Manny is going to hurt Oscar with both hands. And forget about that Manny-locks-his-right-knee-to-throw-that-hard-left $hit. Maybe Oscar -- a natural left hander -- locks his left knee to throw a right. Give me a break! Oh! That is what Manny is going to do to Oscar. Break his ribs, his eye sockets and his heart. Well, at least Oscar won't worry about one break -- his bank account! Holla!
Friday Dec 5, 2008 04:20:46 PM
paulbo:  Let's hold off on the Henry Armstrong comparison until PacMan's career is over. I don't know how many times we've said such-and-such a fighter is the new such-and-such, only to eat our words later. Remember Donald Curry? He was supposed to be the next Sugar Ray Robinson. Everybody thought that idea was proven correct when he crushed Milton McCrory. Guess what? He got exposed and today is considered just another footnote in boxing. When Tyson was anihilating everyone, some called him the second best heavyweight ever, after Muhammad Ali. Guess what? Tyson got exposed in a way that showed the world he was overhyped and benefitted from a weak era.

darcan:  With all this hype i don't know what will happen next... to say the least. Oscar has the big advantage (I know all of you or most of you will agree), weight, height, reach. Pacman's best advantage will be his speed and power (but let's not forget, Oscar has it too, although not the same level as the PAC). But 1 thing i know for sure and that i'm sure as hell, this fight happens and will happen because of money and nothing else, $$$$ is addictive, doesn't it??? Both fighters were greed, period. Both fighters talked about honor, respect and recognition but will they fight if the purse is less, lets say 10% of what will they originally get. Will this be happening??? NO and that's a BIG BIG NO. I just hope this fight proves to be of best quality and not some of those lop-sided fight as they've already ensure of their money for the viewers were the real loser if it turn out to be 1. Let's hope and keep our fingers cross.

Real Talk just saw the weigh in:  Teddy Atlas picked Pacman to win tommorow . I hope he knows something most people don't . I'm shaking my head . Pacman better stick and move ......or move stick and move . I wonder if Oscar does a Cris Byrd and look good at weigh in...only to have noodle legs on fight night . Pacman is gonna have to step his game up fo this one . One thing is workng in his favor is Oscar is talking KO. That's not always a good thing . He may be loading up too much and burning a lot of gas. We;ll see . I'm rooting for my lil peoples but it's looking like KO Oscar. Dueces

kim:  Its a BIG NO! NO! NO! there's no way Oscar can beat Manny! Manny has tremendous power and speed which i think out box Oscar "the fake smile" de la hoya!! Manny can disrupt Oscar game plan because of his style which jump in and out towards his opponent!! Oscar should train hard and improve his footwork otherwise in a blink of an eye, Oscar is lying in tne canvas! asking help for his mother! hahahahahah! i love to see de la hoya with bloody face and broken nose so that he cant breathe and uses only his mouth to get air!!

Victor Michael Maniego:  For People against the pacman: I'll give you an analogy about pacman's faith in boxing, Pacman is like a cancer patient that was predicted to die by the doctor on a certain day. Every doctor has their technical analysis regarding the patient and no doubt that he dies. You know what happened? The patient Manny walk out the hospital brething and kicking! This is always been the case for pacman eversince! You never learned on his past fights! Pacman is always full of surprises and miracles. Faith to God is the reason behind pacmans victory! not his power or speed those things were given by God for him to win, even if you try to read the bible a man of God always succeed against adversaries. Manny has a mission for his Nation "a statement that Filipinos can unite as one". Have you seen the streets of the Philippines even the bussiest Financial district? You will think that these streets were deserted places. The country has zero crime rates during the fight, political rivals smiles and hugs with each other these are the few things that manny can do when he fights. Manny is no ordinary boxer he is a phenomenon on boxing history. Paquiao helps his fellow Filipino with his winnings, he never put his money in his pocket unlike politicians do. Pacman haters you are only seeing the side of Manny as a boxing fighter, you should look further.
Saturday Dec 6, 2008 01:16:28 PM
SchoolOfHardKnocks:  Oscar has way more power then Manny, he is not that much slower then Manny, he's bigger and stronger then Manny, has better boxing tools then Manny, has a longer reach then Manny and has a better chin then Manny. RealTalk..the sight is RightCrossEntertainment dot com I can tell Oscar will be very strong and Freddie Roach is very nervous.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
