The Froch/Pascal tiff could be the best bout taking place anywhere Saturday. But we hear there's another big bout that will hog the limelight, so Froch will have to wait a spell longer to break out.

It's Pronounced "FROTCH"

By Ronan Keenan

Buried beneath all the hype surrounding Saturday’s Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao extravaganza in Las Vegas, a fight thousands of miles away for a vacant 168-pound title might just be the most compelling contest of the night.

Carl Froch’s showdown with Jean Pascal for the World Boxing Council’s super-middleweight belt at the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham may not be the “Dream Match”, but among boxing purists it represents a clash of two flashy, unbeaten stylists.

Neither fighter has yet broken into the elite class of the division, but in the case of Froch it hasn’t been for a lack of trying.  Negotiations with the biggest names have proven futile, as Joe Calzaghe dismissed the Nottingham native’s challenge, while Jermain Taylor opted for a more lucrative fight with Jeff Lacy, with Taylor’s promoter Lou DiBella admitting that Froch would have posed a more difficult challenge for his fighter.

Moreover, a matchup with the undefeated Denis Inkin for the WBC belt failed to materialize on two occasions after injuries forced the Russian’s withdrawal.

In all, the lack of progress has seen Froch grow increasingly disillusioned with the business side of the professional game.

“It’s been difficult at times,” Froch, 23-0 (19 KOs), said last month. “Some big fights should have happened. I’ve had two so-called superstars flat-out run from me this year in Joe Calzaghe and Jermain Taylor. But on December 6 you’re going to have two undefeated fighters, in their prime, fighting for the world title.”

Froch, who is promoted by Mick Hennessy, has yet to encounter a stern test in his six-year pro career, and his only fight in 2008 was against the obscure Albert Rybacki, who was a late replacement for Inkin last May.

Froch’s most significant victory to date was a one-sided beat-down of a faded Robin Reid last year. Froch consistently pierced the former champ with sharp jabs and stinging right-hands, flooring Reid on three occasions before the fight was stopped at the end of the fifth round.

The 31-year-old fights with a relaxed style, carrying his left hand low while sizing up opponents for the swift right cross. But on occasions he has appeared lazy against overmatched foes, leading to the development of bad defensive habits that could be exploited by a boxer with Pascal’s speed.

Froch’s self-assured nature inside the ring carries through to life outside the ropes, as the former Loughborough University student has been unafraid to voice his opinions on British sporting demigods.

Commenting on soccer star David Beckham a few years ago Froch said: “I’m better at boxing than Beckham is at football. He’s great at corners and free kicks and passing, but he can’t tackle and is not an all-round talent.”

And on Joe Calzaghe: “Joe doesn’t pack a big punch and he’s past his best, which is why he hasn’t stopped anyone lately. I wasn’t surprised he didn’t knock [Roy] Jones out [last month] because he hasn’t got it in him.”

But Froch’s Canada-based opponent isn’t lacking confidence either, and the 26-year-old Pascal has no fears about fighting in front of an expected 7,000 partisan fans in Nottingham.

“I have good memories of England,” said Pascal, 21-0 (14 KOs), who was born in Haiti but moved to Canada at a young age and has fought most of his pro bouts in Montreal. “I won gold [at the Commonwealth Games in 2002] against a British guy in front of 15,000 people [in Manchester], so I don’t know why I won’t be able to repeat that. Right now, I can’t wait to be back in the UK because they’re good fans. I can’t wait to show them my skills.”

So far in his neophyte three-year paid career Pascal has stylistically resembled Roy Jones, skating around the ring with a languid guard and slippery defense.  He will prove to be a difficult target for Froch, but like the Brit, he is thus far untried in the pro ranks.

His most notable scalp was that of a rusty Kingsley Ikeke, with Pascal cruising to a relatively comfortable twelve rounds point win. Despite his large frame, the gangly Ikeke failed to test Pascal’s punch resistance, giving little indication of how the Canadian will react to Froch’s powerful right cross.

Yet Pascal’s apparent defensive prowess could frustrate Froch, possibly resulting in a taut, highly skilled contest.

But both fighters are preparing for an intensive battle and relocated to camps away from home, with Pascal based in Phoenix, Arizona, while Froch spent six weeks in Ireland, training alongside Junior Witter.

Froch will be hoping to fare better against North American opposition than Witter did last May, when the Bradford fighter lost his WBC 140-pound title to Timothy Bradley.  Adding to Pascal’s apparent omen advantage, his promoter Yvon Michel points out that Canadian fighters Donnie Lalonde, Dave Hilton and Eric Lucas have all captured the WBC 168-pound trinket.

Regardless, Froch and Pascal will need to put on a riveting show if they are to make headlines in the boxing world on Saturday. The fight will be available on free network TV in the UK, but will be running in competition with Amir Khan’s comeback fight with Oisin Fagan in London, which comprises the British De La Hoya-Pacquiao pay-per-view broadcast.

But don’t tell the brash Froch that he won’t be making the news. He believes it’s only a matter of time before his performances will attract mainstream publicity.

“I want to get the newspapers to take note of boxing and say [about me] ‘look we’ve got a talent here, someone who is going to dominate on a world level’,” he stated.

“As soon as I unify the world titles everybody will be onto me like a rash.”

Dave Rado:  Froch has not tried to get a fight with the number one super-middleweight, Kessler, presumably because he thinks Kessler would probably beat him, so it's hard to take seriously his claims that he's tried to get fights with the best fighters.

brownsugar:  what channel is this fight on anyway?? want to see what the hype is all about,... never saw Froch except for one recent mismatch,.. Pascal looks like a budget Roy Jones against limited opposition (and was almost stopped by a journeyman),.. can Pascal throw hard punches???,.. those arm punches won't help against Froch,.. it's going to be a long night for Pascal if he fights scared,.. he might as well let it all hang out if he hopes to win... should be entertaining.

Pumkinescobar:  The fight is on ITV in the UK i will be watching its the only fight card worth watching on dec 6. Sky box office have the DLH/Pacman fight and the glass jawed Amir Khan fight also Enzo Mac against a fighter who has two days notice, Fruadley Harrison who must have been smoking crack recently as he still thinks he could take one of the world titles. Whould you pay £15 for that. Carl Froch is a quality fighter i am looking forward to him taking a 7 rnd ko i aint seen Pascal fight before so i dont really know what he brings to the table but i cant see Froch letting his chance of the WBC 168lb title slip through his fingers he has been waiting ages for this shot with fighters pulling out and fighters unwilling to take the risk of fighting him. Carl the cobra Froch is coming to clean up the supermiddle division and it all starts saturday dec 6th.

andy from newcastle:  Fighters today really have no imagination. There must be hundreds of species of snake, why chose Cobra? Unless he thinks he's the new Donald Curry or Tommy Hearns. He can't be the new Henry Armstrong. That's already taken. Twice. Toonoy (already in silly mode, in preparation for tomorrow's pantomime).

brownsugar:  thanks Pumkin,.. I'll try to catch it. then I'll be back to comment on Carls ability to potentially clean up the division.

rudy:  Pascal and Froch are both overrated. Froch should get by him but once he starts fighting the top guys at 168, its over
Friday Dec 5, 2008 09:28:20 AM
Davey:  rudy give the guys a chance lol I guess you said all this about Joe at one time, Froch`s got the power though his defence can be weak at times whearas Pascal has got the speed but can be a bit slack , so Pascal is gonna have to up his game. Im of the camp that says dont judge a boxer blindly out of ignorance otherwise your saying that the likes of Ali was no good either, Most great fighters lose 1 or 2 fights. Ive just watch Paul McCloskey win the British Welterweight belt , He`s some fighter to keep ones eyes on, could be McGuigans ghost.

Theboyb901:  I think Froch claims of wanting to fight the elite is untrue. He isn't ready and I don't think he wants to fight them....I'd rather watch Duddy or Lee.
Friday Dec 5, 2008 10:45:48 PM
Yuvie:  This is probably the best fight of the night. I'm looking forward to it. It's an interesting measuring stick with these two guys. I haven't seen much of Froch so can't comment. I'm hoping he puts on a performance though. Froch/Taylor would be a great fight if it happened. I'm hoping Froch will become the next big british fighter.

steadadelica:  For me, Froch is of the same demeanour as other sportsmen like Christiano Ronaldo and Kevin Pietersen; he has ultimate confidence in his ability. indeed, he posses some of the ability to back his swagger up - some time i wonder how his shots make the target as it looks like he's throwing them in super slow motion. I just hope, for his sake, this impression says more about his ability rather than the foes he has faced thus far. i hope pascal has the ability for him to prove himself adequately as he has the knock out power to be a true star. if not I hope this pascal put on a show as i cant be bothers to wait up for the freak show later on for my fix.

Davey:  Froch Wins! What A Fight! By bother Boxers! 1st 4 rounds it was 2 each both slugging it out had shades of Hagler Hearns! But Frochs Jab started to slowly win the fight but the punches kept coming from both, pascal had more spring in his step at the start whereas Froch was too stationary but that changed and Froch`s footwork improved. Pascal`s pace started to slow his speed too, Frochs jab was taking its toll on him.Froch left eye got cut and Pascal had blood dripping from his eyes with swelling over both eyes. Both boxers fought like warriors fighting to win, this Fight will cement Frochs credability for sure. This fight was like role reversal the boxer Pascal was the fighter try to get into a fight, whereas Froch the puncher turned into the boxer. Everyone youve got to watch this fight online! Froch vs Taylor next! if Taylor will acceptFroch will come over the pond for sure!

caesar:  Froch isnt worth anything, kessler would work him in a heartbeat. Instead of calling the best super middle weight out he thinks he can beat super joe? who is advising this guy
Saturday Dec 6, 2008 11:47:51 PM
Damian:  Huge congrats Carl Froch!!! A thoroughly deserved win, especially after having been ducked all these years ... Hope you learn to keep your hands up from now on though (despiute having a great chin, I really don't think Froch, unlike Calzaghe, has the speed to keep getting away with keeping his hands so low ...). ... Some great fights to be made in Super Middleweight division for 2009, that's for sure, with Kessler, Froch, Bute, Taylor, Inkin, and Andrade all in the mix ... Any match-up between Froch, Kessler, Bute and Taylor especially, would be fantastic ... Let's hope it happens, and that by this time next year someone will have unified these belts ... My money's on Kessler, but if Froch can learn to move his head and keep his hands up, you never know ... If a match can be made between Froch and Kessler in, say, Spring 2009, and Froch wins, I think that's the only chance Froch has of landing his dream fight with Calzaghe, so I think his best option is to forget Taylor for now and do whatever he can to make sure that a fight happens with Kessler SOON!! Good luck lads!!

Davey:  caesar at present i think Kessler would beat Froch by UD but Froch he can improve with a few more fights, I have admiration for Kessler he`s a Great!, but im not gonna be ignorant and say Froch isnt worth anything thats absurd judgement. Ok Froch`s confidence is a bit over the top and i think him wanting to fight Joe is a bit premature(Joes next move has to be Dawson with the aim of unifying the LHW division then call it a day) but confidence can jade ones view , dont forget all Boxer/Fighters need that confidence to become a Great!

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
