Buying Saturday's PPV Or Giving It A Pass?
By Michael Woods
Sometimes it stinks to be a fight fan, doesn’t it?
We can handle loving an “outlaw” sport, the occasional snooty glances from disapproving relatives and acquaintances who wonder why we so enjoy a “barbaric” spectatcle. We are judged to be bloodthirsty voyeurs at worst, or simply anachronisms, relics from another less evolved era.
But we know what we like, we enjoy the spectacle, and skill, and showcases of strength and will and heart, and we can shrug off the judgments. But when that cable bill comes, that can be harder to shrug off, right?
It’s one thing to hear chops busting, but quite another to get that bill three weeks after you broke down, and ordered that pay per view, and see a bill that is 50% larger than it would be. Everything it seems, has gone up in cost, but unless you are in the fortunate minority, your salary or hourly wage hasn’t kept pace.
But if you want to be in the mix, and truly follow the sweet science, you are resigned to pony up that extra $50 a month, on top of the extra spiff you pay to subscribe to the premium channels, HBO and Showtime, which are the primary homes to the outlaw sport which advertisers are reluctant to touch. Or so we’ve been lead to believe, right?
So then how has Golden Boy been able to secure financing from advertisers which will allow those inclined to purchase Saturday’s Oscar De La Hoya/Manny Pacquiao pay per view for less than the $54.95 suggested retail price?
Coca-Cola and Tecate beer are offering mail-in rebate coupons worth $20 each toward the cost of the pay-per-view telecast, and Cazadores tequila will offer a $10 rebate. Do the math, then. If you get your stuff together, you can stock up on items for your guests on Saturday, and defray the expense. If you are frugal and deceitful, you could even not tell your guests about the coupons, charge them Saturday night, and MAKE A PROFIT. Not that TSS condones that sort of thing!
"We know these are tough times economically," Schaefer said about the coupons. "With the help of these rebates, which we think is unprecedented in pay per view, more fans will be able to afford to see this great event."
Rebate coupons can be found on six-packs of Coke's Full Throttle energy drink and 18-packs of Tecate beer.
Why aren’t other promoters able to pull off the same sort of promotional tie ins? Why do fight fans take it on the chin, and have to pony up $50 a month to effectively follow fightsports, or more if you also watch MMA? Will the economic downturn force promoters and programmers to…say it isn’t so?...actually leave a few dollars on the table, and back off the business model that hammers consumers? Will they finally finally finally get it that they aren’t growing new fans by putting the most attractive bouts on premium channels and on PPV? Further, do they care, or are they simply interested in squeezing every last ounce of blood from the turnip, and could care less about the longterm prospects of the industry?
We get accused of being terminal naysayers sometimes, but let it be clear that I applaud Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer’s effort and Golden Boy and Top Rank’s decision to put the January 24 Margarito-Mosley bout on regular HBO. That’s a sign of comprehension that the powerbrokers need to back off on the PPV pile on, and concede that the pockets of their diehards are bottomless pits. Now, when Schaefer or whoever has the foresight and wherewithal to place a premium fight on regular network TV, maybe on a Saturday night, where MMA has had success, then you’ll be able to hear the sounds of me clapping in Brooklyn all the way in California…
Schaefer and Top Rank boss Bob Arum hopped on a conference call on Monday afternoon to hype the Saturday match, which is either a cynical exercise in money gathering, or a genuinely fascinating match of styles that could result in a history-making upset of the larger man at the hands of the smaller man with the heart of a lion.
The economy, or lack thereof, was a popular reference point on the call. Schaefer particularly, being a banker in his former life, was impressive in his grasp of the national monetary mood, and in his ability to convey it to us keyboard tappers whose degrees make us more suited for watching sporting events and commenting on them than weighing in on matters like gross domestic product and collateralized debt obligations. Over a year ago, Schaefer reminded us, he sounded warning bells on the economy. But today, he said there were some encouraging signs, in the markets, gas prices, retail sales, and entertainment purchase trends. OK, so today actually the Dow tanked like Pavlik at middleweight, but he had us convinced there for the time being…
Back to that cable bill, and the price tag for Saturday’s presentation. Arum said that people should take a page from the Hispanics and Filipinos, who he said gather together groups of people to defray the cost of the event. “Four couples, bring beer, tacos, order Dominos pizza, it’s cheaper than going to the movies and getting a bite to eat after,” Arum said. “I’m very bullish on how this pay per view is going to do.”
In fact, in these leaner times, Arum is still hopeful that the numbers from PPV will surpass the numbers for Oscar/Floyd in 2007, and preliminary indications are that is the case, he said. Of reports that tickets sales aren’t as robust as he might like, he acknowledged that some tix are still available, but that they moved almost $15 million in an hour upon initial release, so he wouldn’t have lowered prices if he’d known four months ago that the economy would be in this state. Maybe, Arum said, he would’ve voted to lower the PPV cost five bucks. That would’ve been a nice gesture, at least, in TSS’ mind…He also refused to shed a tear for ticket brokers, who snapped up a lion’s share of the tickets, and will be stuck selling a big batch at face value.
The two men also touched on the history of bad blood between Top Rank and Golden Boy, which boiled over last year when Pacquiao signed with both companies before deciding to stick with Arum. Since then, they’ve co-promoted Barrera-Pacquiao, Mosley-Cotto, Hopkins-Pavlik and will do Mosley-Margarito next year, so clearly money has helped the principals get over their beef. Schaefer said that De La Hoya is still miffed at Manny for his dealings, and got in a shot at Pacquiao when he said, “Manny has the ability to attract chaos.” Oscar, Schaefer said, “has said more than once that he will make Manny pay.”
Arum contends that he feels strongly that PacMan could win this fight, as does his trainer, and Top Rank matchmakers. He would not put his man in an unwinnable bout, he said. So that spoke to fans and media who think this event is a mismatch. Arum and Schaefer both ascribe much of that negativism to jealousy from promoters and fighters, but didn’t address what would make a fan take this stance…
Schaefer also said that he and Oscar regularly discuss “the end,” and that one never knows, Dec. 6 could be Oscar’s last fight. I cannot guarantee that this will not be Oscar’s farewell, but the man is going to see a 14 foot statue of himself erected at the Staples Center, next to statues of Magic Johnson and Wayne Gretzky, so I can think we can agree his work is done if he so chooses…
Now, TSS Universe, I want to hear from you. Will you be buying the PPV, or taking a pass? Is that because you perceive it to be a mismatch? Is it too pricy? Have you cut back on your PPV purchases in recent months? Or do you simply accept that this is the business model for the sport, and are resigned to shell out premium money for premium product? Weigh in!

It's too pricey, but still it's a compelling event. I would consider it a huge upset if Pacquiao were to win, I know that all the boxing people asked their opinion in The Ring, 20 in total I believe, Oscar is considered a huge favorite, 18 votes to 2.

Taking a pass on this one, just like I passed on Pavlik - Hopkins and Calzaghe - Jones. This fight just doesn't mean anything to me. No title is at stake. It has absolutely no bearing on the welterweight division. Or any division for that matter. If Manny wins, is he going to fight Margarito or Paul Williams next? No. If Oscar wins, will he fight either of those guys? No. It's a meaningless exhibition, a dead end fight. I like fights that matter, that are for the Ring Magazine belt or for a shot at the Ring Magazine champion (an old fashion eliminator). Oscar would get wiped out by either Margarito or Williams (and a number of other guys). The only intrigue in this fight is the weight issue, a big small-man against a small small-man. This fight is what's wrong with boxing. What's right with boxing is Paul Williams, and his current attitude. Or Margarito - Cotto. It's a fight like that that becomes a Legendary Nights episode. Two elite fighters, hungry, and atop their game. My $55 stays in my pocket, again. (on a side note, the coupon is a step in the right direction and Oscar will NOT retire -- please).

For Pacquiao and his supporters, this fight has legitimate merit. But for Oscar, it's about his ego. For the majority of fight fans, this fight is a curiosity. But this curiosity will make big money.

Something tells me this is going to be a war. Pacquiao is not afraid of any mean, least of all De La Hoya, who I respect but think is going to get torn up in spite of his naturally higher weight. Still don't know whether I'm going to pony up for the PPV though. They don't sell Tecate in my area and I'm sure not buying an "energy drink" (aka pop with enough sugar and caffeine to kill a small packhorse).

I don't think this will flop like Hopkins v. Pavlik and Jones v. Calzaghe, which COMBINED did less than 500,000 buys (indeed, closer to 400k for both PPV telecasts), but surpass Mayweather - De La Hoya?? That's promoter-speak. In the United States, I don't think it will do that great. Perhaps overseas it will be huge because of Manny, but I just don't feel the same anticipation for this that existed in May 2007 for Floyd - Oscar. In any event, the promoters are mindful of the recent busts, and are praying this doesn't suffer a similar fate. I think Oscar's shine is wearing off too. True boxing fans realize he's not relevant, and most mainstream fans in the U.S. won't shell out the $55 in this economy (and believe me, in the US, Pacquiao is not that well known as he doesn't speak English (NO offense, just stating a fact) and fights at featherweight). Mainstream America no longer follows boxing, let alone featherweight non-English speaking boxers. I think this is Oscar's last hurrah in terms of selling himself as a fighter. The shine has worn off.

I used to buy 4-6 PPV events per year, but haven't purchased one in 2008. My monetary situation is unchanged due to the economy, so that's not my beef. My problem is with the PPV model. The undercards STINK. I know many people could care less about this, but I like a good undercard. In the past, when I had friends over for these, a good supporting fight or two truly mattered and got everyone pumped for the main event. As I write this, I remember the Lawrence Clay Bey versus Clifford Etienne fight on the undercard of Lewis versus Tua. It was a heavyweight action brawl between two undefeated up and comers. They don't do that these days. In fact, I generally watch some other sporting event and then flip over for the main event. I REFUSE to support the current PPV model with my dollars.

No way! This is one of those fights I was hoping wouldn't happen. Even if it turns out to be exciting it is like going to the casino where you lose most of the time but you have the one that keeps you going. This is not good for boxing.

Time Warner billed me a $460 cable bill for Nov,.. partly due to fact that I like have a small group of family and friends over for PPV fight parties occasionally (including some MMA and Wrestling)... I informed my son today (another avid fight fan) that I'm tired of these huge cable bills and will be cancelling my subscription in Dec,.. But he and my fiance said they will buy the fight anyway (out of their own pockets),.. I'll watch the fight,.. but under the most Extreme Protest... (and I don't intend to enjoy it, not even a little bit) .... apparently these Pacman fans refuse to be denied.

paying for it, $55 its worth the laugh,i wish dlh get knock on his butt, it's a loose, loose for dlh, if he wins he was supposed to win if he looses, he lost to a fighter 4 weight classes smaller, what a bum, what's up with dlh and the mexican flag, mexicans don't embrace him, he has a hard time understanding that, he needs to fight fighters the people want to watch, not what opposition fighter bring in more money, there is talk about dlh/hatton in may, he needs to fight margarito, margarito will eat him up

I'm sure that energy drink costs $20 too, so it's a wash, only you're stuck with the garbage energy drink and have to wait 9 months to get the $20 refund (by design, those refunds take forever to process - they figure people will forget, etc. A big scam). You have to send in bar codes and receipts and it's a huge hassle.

Well! I'm coming right out of the Woods -- or is that out of my pocket -- and making sure that as many of my peeps who want to see the fight get the hook up. A host of we Pinoy businesspersons are giving the hook up of this bout as an early Christmas present for the U.S. American Pinoy communities. We are clinging as always for our treasure -- Manny. As for my viewing of the bout, my little pale yellow-brown a$$ will be sitting in a $2,500 ringside seat. I want to be an eye-witness to history, as the AGOAT knock out a Golden Oldie legend. Holla!

If you don't watch it live - remember, "nothing can bring back the live hour of the December 6th splendor in Vegas". Just too exciting a fight to pass. For a few dollars or so a of every minute/second of joy is nothing. The flag-waving, the screams, the "Oscar, Oscar, Mexico, Mexico", "Manny, Manny" chants, the singing of the national anthems, the entrance songs, the pageantry, the celebrities are all more than enough to compensate for the PPV fee. Come on boys and girls, let's go.

This should be one for the ages. I've always been a fan of pacquiao and all of his fights have been exciting. I'm definetly going to buy this pay per view with the help of a couple of my buddies pitching in on the cost. I've got my money on pacquiao. Speed does kill and pacquiao will use this to his advantage. As for a prediction, I'm looking for pac to KO DLH in the 9th round. De la hoya will be too tired and PAC will dictate the whole match.

Here in the U.K we get most big fights free (well I say free but there is the monthly cable bill) but rarely on the night one off payments. This however will have a one off £15 price tag but I'll pay up because I refuse to miss big fights. I look at it this way, when I have a night out on the toon it's pretty expensive and I would honestly rather stay in and watch a fight or go watch one live at the Metro or down in London at the York hall Bethnall Green or O2. So I'll gladly miss a night out for boxing but try explaining this to a new girlfriend...

Just run a google search and believe me, you can find a live feed without shelling out the $55. It's certainly not as good as having it on the big screen at home in HDTV and surround sound, but it's serviceable. The cards are so bad these days that I can't remember the last time I purchased one and actually began watching at 9pm (EST). In the old days, the undercard was part of the attraction. Not anymore. I just pull it up at 11:00 or so and voila, there it is. Fistic Fury - That's always a tough sell in the early going.

When Pacquaio fought David Diaz, I was at this bar in queens and got F&*%*ing wasted. I got lost and my friends found me hanging on to a lampost some 40 blocks from their house. Reason why I'm telling you this, maybe you can learn a thing or two coz I never seem to learn. I will savor the fight while it lasts, coz I don't think it will go the full distance. No,
I have not purchased a PPV in at least a year, if not two years. I pay over $170 for cable, phone service, and Internet and shelling out $55-$60 more for a PPV is no longer worth it. If it was for cable only, I might consider it. But in recent years the undercards have sucked so bad, that consumers are paying money for one fight.
I have considered other alternatives. While on-line options and computer servers are far from reliable at least they are more economically feasible. With the state of the economy, people are packaging everything, not just boxing. Most families do not have an unlimited entertainment budget.

I'm a fan of DLH also and she always went against me until I watch Pac and Morales fight and i was like whoa. Like i said it's going to be a win by split for Pac.

I'm a big fan of Pacquiao but it ain't worth paying the £15 that it is over here. From the start this has been a stupid fight and no argument is gonna change my mind on that. The way I look at it is that this is Oscar, do you guys really think he will lose? There could be an absolute shock, if there is I'd love it, but not likely. This is a hand picked Oscar fight for him to carry on his now getting stupid career. Which little guy is he gonna fight next? That question sounds like a joke, like a bit of an insult. The funny thing is that it isn't because he'll probably go on to face Hatton, another little guy when compared to Oscar. Honestly though, their are plenty of chances to see this fight live for free but even that ain't gonna tempt me. As I've said, if Pac gets the upset win, I'll probably watch it afterwards but I certainly ain't giving Oscar or the channel that airs this my money.

Son of Sam peter said it best folks - this fight is exciting and I'll be watching on the black box but it's a lot like Mayorga vs. Vargas. It has ZERO significance in the welterweight division. Here's hoping Oscar gets a legitimate KO loss handed to him, so I can forget the embarrassing quit job against Hopkins.

Robert Curtis fearing the hurt won't equal the hype:

The 24/7 business on this fight has left me disgusted. I feel like a bust-out schmuck just thinking of paying for this fight. I have faith in Manny and know he will show up to fight. But I'm afraid once Oscar starts eating Manny's leather, he will stiffen up and lay back and we'll end up with a boring fight just like the so-called big one with Mayweather. I'm not sure if Manny can knock Oscar out, but I believe Manny can win a convincing decision. But folks, if this turns out to be another lame split decision, I may just become a UFC fan after all(kidding!). The last thing on earth I want to see is a rematch of this money-hungry mismatch.

No way am I paying $54.95 for this farce in the midst of a dreadful recession. Out of 20 polled in "The Ring" only two have gone for Pacman. That about sums up how competitive this farce is.

It's amazing soooo many new names are popping up on this post and this post only following the topic of "will you pay for this fight or not". A lot of these "blog names" are made up and have to be employees of Top Rank or Golden Boy Prom. trying to wade you into the deep waters of paying for this meaningless, bull$hit a$$ fight. Who the hell keeps paying to see ODH? He hasn't been in anything meaningful since.................
Manny is the real draw here and people just want to see the little guy try to pull off "the little engine that could" stunt! I would watch on FREE HBO but not paying $.01 to see this mockery of the sweetest science known to man next to the periodic table of the elements. And that's REAL!

I hope this card loses money. If we all take a stand, then maybe someone will listen. I want:
- compelling, competitive matches
- great undercards
- more good matches on regular TV, not HBO or PPV
I've only ordered Margarito-Cotto this year. No way I'm paying for this show. If it was Pacquiao vs. Juan Diaz in the main event, with DLH on the undercard (yeah, the undercard) fighting Andre Berto, then I would buy it.

The answer? An emphatic NO! You watch, this fight will FLOP, at least by De La Hoya standards. I think they'll get about 550k buys. That's my prediction. The promoters think this will surpass De La Hoya - Mayweather. Now THAT is a joke! Remember WAY BACK WHEN, in 1997, the Holyfield - Tyson rematch? People were talking about that fight. There was a real buzz. Non-boxing fans were weighing in. The same for Tyson - Lewis. This fight? The average fan in the United States doesn't know a thing about Manny. Joe Six-Pack does not know what weight class he fights in, nor does he know how to spell his name - Pacquiao. This fight will be a BUST. Mark my words. De La Hoya is a has been and Manny is an unknown commodity in America. Now, maybe overseas PPV sales will be robust and cushion the blow. That's possible. But if the promoters are banking on PPV sales in the US to carry the day they're in for a rude awakening.

SchoolOfHardKnocks watching Shane Mosley inject himself with EPO:
|
Can't do it! I can't force myself to buy it..lol Oscar will KO Manny for several reasons, The steroids that Manny is taking won't help him. I know Manny seems humble and everything but so was Shane Mosley and you see that he testified in court that he injected himself with EPO. That's why he couldn't sleep and when Freddie said that his body had to adjust to the new supplements that they had just given him. OKKAY..SUUUURE! This is 100% a fact, Freddie Roach always knew James Toney was taking Steroids. Do you think he was going to say anything. Did you see on 24/7 Freddie said this fight is the biggest fight of his career. Like I said this fight is about Freddie not Manny. Manny didn't really want this fight. Freddie convinced Manny to take it. GREEDY FREDDIE MANIPULATED MANNY!

It’s a lose/lose situation for DLH, if you asked me. This fight reminds me of the fact that a while back a male boxer was scheduled to fight a woman fighter and the ball was @ the male’s court. It never happened as HE knew he would lose either way. I have not watched a second of the 24/7 HBO offers, why bother? I won’t watch the fight given I have a chance to watch if for free. If DLH had some cojones he would have faced the obvious opponent, Margarito. Next opponent for DLH should be the LOSER of Arce/Darchinyan….

Radam G aka Humble PRG on the Pinoy Money Train betting heavily on AGOAT KOing LGOAT:
|
Wow! SchoolOFHardKnocks, a very frighten Oscar will get pugged as he tries to hold and hug. Dude face is already soften and busted up from sparring in 16oz gloves. Manny is going to touch and rip Oscar face apart with those 8oz mitten. Oscar will start hallucinating that this "Dream Match" switched up and turned loose a heavy, giant NIGHTMARE on him. Oscar will be thinking that Big Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola is banging him, instead of "a midget" Manny "PacMan" Paciquiao. It will be the effect of coconut juice and good, pure Asian food, not the ROIDS. Holla!

I won't buy the PPV; I'll catch it on HBO next week. I expect it to be thrilling for the first several round, but ultimately De La Hoya's size will wear out Pac-Man. I think Pac's corner will stop the fight when their guy begins to tire and starts taking a pounding. Don't expect the corner to wait for De La Hoya to knock out their man. That would be stupid. Given the weight difference, few people expect Pac-Man to win anyway. They'll intervene so their fighter can fight another day in a more suitable weight class.

I'm with Marco A. Barrera..He said the fight is a disgrace and nothing more than a circus act to line the pockets of the two fighters involved. He also said "What battle? This is not battle. This doesn't give any respect to the people - it's a circus. It is something that will make us lose a lot of credibility as boxers with these kind of things," "Why didn't De La Hoya challenge Antonio Margarito or one of the Klitschkos" "I believe Oscar should win in two rounds. The fight is a circus. Jose Sulaiman [WBC president] said the same thing, that the fight was a circus. Their pockets are the ones that are going to win. They are the ones who going to leave full and satisfied because the boxing family will not get a lot from this farce."

I 'd have a lot of respect for Junior Sulaiman, but not WBC president Jose Sulaiman. Dude is corrupted. I don't have enough time to scribble about some of the most notrious "circus"-like bouts that he sanctioned. Like the GOAT Muhammad Ali did twice, the AGOAT Manny "PacMan" Paciquiao is going to "shock the world" when he knocks out LGOAT Oscar "No longer can pull the trigger" Dela Hoya. Holla!

But if some people want to Buy It or Cheerlead it on.. Let Them. As P.T. Barnum put it .. "There's a Sucker Born Every Minute!".. and this is a Circus Freakshow Event.

Me personally....I don't think this one is gonna out do Mayweather vs. De La Hoya ....and Pacquiao is one of my favorites . Mayweather created a lot of contraversy and hype for the fight ....with the smack talking and flash . Good job on his part . Oscar is kinda vanilla and Pacman is quiet . We' ll see , I say Oscar should've payed Floyd and got a part 2 going . But then again the first fight came up a little short campared to the hype . I got a feeling this fight is going to live up to the hype and then some . A lot of people who think Pacman is gonna come out head hunting will be surprised to see a patient Manny like the one in the second Barrera fight . That is until he gets hit with something to make him errupt like a wasp nest . I hope it last at least nine rds. I think it can go either way ,Oscar don't like it to the body . Dueces

I don't think this fight has anything to do with the welterweight division but as long as De La Hoya fights Margarito in his next fight I can forgive this one, don't wanna see him fight Hatton. Pacquiao deserves the big pay day for being #1 P4P. I really just want to see him get KTFO by De La Hoya for getting that (robbery)decision over Marquez and for not giving him the rematch right away and telling him he's not going to give it to him unless Marquez comes up to welterweight for it?! I mean WTF is all that about man! All and all I'll be watching the fight De La Hoya doesn't have to get the KO to me I'd be happy just seeing a beat down through the entire fight. Then Pacman can go back down in weight so Marquez or Guzman can finish him.

desparate for the game I ordered Pavlik Hopkins and Jones vs Slappy. When I got the bill I was dissapointed yes. But I love boxing so much I couldnt help myself. The Golden Boy Pac Man fight I think is what looks like the new trend for boxing. Styles make fights but this fight does not make since at all. Did Roy Jones retire yet? God I pray that he does, if anybody who knows Ali ends up reading this. Ask Ali to call Roy and tell that brotha to quit. As far as De La Hoya goes....KNOCK THAT PILL-A-PINO out mayne!

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
